I lost my mind when Basil started yelling "that's so mean." It's a painful reminder of how young both of them are and how young they were when they lost their innocence.
@@thesoupiestsoupster9019 and going off with what you said, children who have experienced trauma or have PTSD can act either too old for their age or too young for their age. I kind of see basil as acting too young for his age because he was so young when he saw Mari’s death, and maybe he is stuck in that time. Another thing with child PTSD is that there is no sense of time
I really like the difference between Sunny's and Basil's something. Sunny's something is like his guilt following him everywhere he goes and into his headspace while Basil's something is like his guilt slowly overtaking and spreading around him. It's cool that you can tell how their guilt is affecting them. Edit: A lot of people are telling me that Sunny's something's form is based on Mari hanging and Basil's something's form is based on Mari's black hair. I knew that, I just was talking about how cool OMOCAT represented how their guilt of Mari's death were affecting them throughout their lives. OMOCAT and the Omori Team really did a great job conveying that by creating the Somethings.
Sunny's something isn't a part of him because he detached himself from his guilt and reality. Basil's something is a part of him because he internalised his guilt, causing it to slowly eat away at him.
This is legit a bone chilling moment. You finally figure out the reason why Sunny and Basil are so messed up, and for the good ending you have to go and fight Basil because you both don’t know how to handle the truth. It’s soul crushing really
"They deserve better" yeah it's not like because of Basil and Sunny everyone drifted away and Mari died. They are definitly the good guys and should get a happy ending.
Let me rephrase that, they all deserve better. Also Sunny and Basil were even younger kids at the time, and dealing with a situation that no kid should have to endure. They're kids, and kids do stupid things.
It's interesting that even in WHITE SPACE the moment of Sunny and Basil being hospitalized is constantly being foreshadowed when you are on low HP, as a heart monitor can be heard while you are close to a Game Over, this game has so many details people might be able to find stuff +5 years after release.

Now, you think Sunny's abilities are gonna work at frist, that he'll use then, clam both of them down, and they'll talk it though. But then the game says no, welcome to pain town, and things just get much worse.

When Basil said: « No... You wouldn’t leave me. That’s not like you, SUNNY! » It SHOCKED me like even when he is having an anxiety attack after 4 years without Sunny coming to school because of a traumatic experience, being bullied because ‘something’ (or Sunny, or not really) ruined his photos and after Sunny is literally trying to run away he STILL believes in him! That’s really one kind of a best friend Edit (one year later): It’s crazy how much I didn’t understand Basil and Sunny in that part of the game! I thought he was gentle and just pleading Sunny to stay near him longer, but the more I watch the ending, the more I understand his character. He was probably actually violently yelling at him, after all, he tried to kill himself and Sunny too in a way of “saving him” from “Something”. And not just that, but Sunny tried to run away because his best friend was actually becoming dangerous and was in direct correlation to the event he tried to forget for 4 years. So instead of two best friends panicking and trying to kill each other’s “Something” (like I thought the first time), it’s more of Sunny trying to defend himself when his best friend tries to kill his “Something” (which is actually just him and the trauma), because he’s in too much denial to realise good people can do bad things. That explains in a much better way why Basil asked Sunny to “stop struggling”, if “there wasn’t any other way around this” and if he hated him. Wow… That’s so interesting. I’m sure I let out other things I’ve noticed, but now that I really realise the scene better, I wouldn’t say he’s a “good kind of best friend”, but for sure one of the most interesting characters in the game.

Sunny and Basil both exhibit symptoms of depression, but different symptoms. Sunny withdraws from life and into a dream world of his own creation. He sleeps for a majority of the day, doesn't eat very often, has trouble focusing under stress, and, most notably, has suicidal ideation. He carries around a knife that he repeatedly contemplates stabbing himself with. I'm no doctor, but it's fair to describe Omori's behavior as having major depressive disorder, triggered by the events surrounding Mari's death. Basil, on the other hand, seems to behave quite a bit differently. He keeps a very brave, happy-looking face in public, but when he's alone or with particular company, he starts to see things, lies to himself about Mari's death, and becomes a threat to himself and others as a result of these things. Basil shows symptoms of psychotic/manic depression, triggered by Mari's death and potentially by the bullying he receives at school. I find these two characters so interesting. They really show how people are affected by grief/loss in drastically different ways.
(I'm not a mental health expert so take this with a grain of salt) but I noticed that they also both display a lot of different symptoms/types of anxiety and PTSD; Basil is constantly worried that everyone will leave him, and he frequently has anxiety attacks. Sunny has 3 phobias and is always afraid of Something following/chasing him, as well as to an extent being afraid of Basil, they both have hallucinations ("Something all around us", Hellmari when you open the door, Something in the mirror, and just their individual Somethings in general), often becoming worse when they're near each other. (Spoiler warning for right after this fight) Another detail that I wasn't the first to notice, but did think was very clever; Omori is a textbook emotionally exploitative person. Mock, Trick, and Shun are all emotion-based skills, affecting enemies based on their emotions, or in other words, exploiting their emotions. During the final fight against Omori, he exploits Sunny's guilt, telling him things like "People like you don't deserve to live", "Kel/Hero/Aubrey/ Basil/You loved her and you killed her", etc... It really shows how exploitative and manipulative Omori really is. (Also, fun detail, Omori is immune to the emotion "Afraid")
That phrase is everything wrong with their situation. It can be a really awful way to bottle things up and too much positive emotions can get incredibly toxic.

@@TempestRex_ i think theyre actually supposed to be sunnys trigger words. right after mari died basil tried to comfort him with those words and such as they were framing her death as a suicide, and just before the fight he says the same thing. the words on the heartbeat monitor appear after the mental breakdown cutscene so i think those words remind sunny of that day, especially because the "something" thats always following him was created when sunny saw maris corpse staring back at them. im not entirely sure about it though

@@T-74 It's hard to see in the fight itself, but if you look at Basil's sprite during this fight, you see he has garden shears. It's also what he uses to kill himself in other routes.
sorry if this is kinda messed up but after rewatching this scene, I realized a few things and created some predictions So if Sunny didn't actually check up on Basil during this period and choose to sleep. You would later wake up to find that Basil has ended his life. So by Basil saying "something behind you, I'll get rid of it once and for all" and "don't be scared, I'm scared too but this is for the better." My theory is that Basil was trying to commit a double suicide with Sunny. He didn't want to be alone and he thought ending his life was the only solution to get rid of the trauma and pain. It was an interesting detail into Basil's mind, I don't know if it's true or not but would be fun to look into. edit : This theory is also supported by the lines Basil says during the fight itself. Basil was trying to kill Sunny but after that, he intends on ending his own life as well. - "Sunny, there's nowhere out of this, is there?" - "Tell me Sunny, am I selfish for doing this?" - "Sunny.... do you hate me?" But this is all just a theory heheh
i think that actually basil just wants to kill himself, but sunny entering his room stops him from doing it. we fight basil so he doesn't commit suicide

To my understanding Basil was going through psychosis and cound't really tell his delusions from reality any more he was probably trying to kill "Something" but since it isn't real he ended up injuring sunny

From the moment he disappeared. I speculated Mari (which I already knew is Sunny's sister after the interaction at the picnic) and Basil already dead. My pessimism is... Nigh dark? Or shining brightly here?
Another thing to note, in the real world "Fight" has "..." while in the dreamworld the option that has ... is "Run" perhaps pointing out that the dreamworld is used by Sunny to be able to do something he normally doesnt want to do in the real world?

I coped by realizing that if it wasn't for Basil maybe Sunny would have went to his parents and explained what happened which while regrettable is way better than the alternative of Basil convincing Sunny to hang his sister to frame it as a suicide. He made a already tragic situation 20x worse so ya I don't care about him anymore.

In the photo descriptions we know that Sunny was trying to convince himself that it was all a dream while basil did all the dirty work. I don’t think sunny could’ve just told that to his parents
@@bagle24601 no they carried his sister's body together and we don't know what Sunny would have done if basil wasn't there but we do know, he came up with the idea, he provided the rope, and he did it all because of his one sided love for sunny. I'm pretty sure that his parents would have came home eventually and then Sunny would have had to explain himself. All basil did was put Sunny in a almost irredeemable position. Even for a kid, there has to be something seriously wrong with you for you to come up with the idea to fake a suicide.

this scene is hard for me to understand, but i assume that happens because basil is trying to restraint sunny, just based off the "stop struggling, sunny" dialogue. but obviously that just makes him more desperate to get away. the way its portrayed is really striking.

Basil doesnt actually attack Sunny, he simply reaches inside, between this and the particle effects on Sunny's and Basil's attacks, its like their collective grief is tearing eachother apart, and it escalates and escalates until Basil finally stabs Sunny in the eye, man this game is amazing.
How do you explain Sunny and Basil's other injuries during the final hospital scenes though? Clearly they must have done something more to eachother, other I don't see why Basil, at the very least, would be hospitalized in the first place.
@@DLxxx After Sunny starts becoming stressed out is when the fight really starts becoming physical. I’m assuming Sunny realizes that there’s no other way out other than to fight, since calming down wasn’t working. The red flashes on the screen after the cutscene show that Sunny and Basil are literally hitting each other until it culminates in Basil severely injuring Sunny’s right eye with the garden shears. Well, that’s how I interpreted it. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
@@Void-un3lp adding onto that before sunny gets stressed out it could be just Basil trying to grab sunny aka “reaches inside”, hold onto him to grab something, sunny avoiding and trying to run away. When Sunny gets STRESSED OUT he begins actually hurting Basil in order to get away (like a prey animal cornered tends to lash out), Basil retaliating with the garden shears to gouge the something out of sunny by force
One of my favorite details in the game is that in a lot of the cutscenes, including this one, Sunny and Basil wear the same outfit. The outfit contrasts the casual wear of the other friends, and is similar to Mari's formal uniform in Headspace. I guess it symbolizes the fact that the incident involved all three of them and the others don't know yet. The outfit is also presumably what both Sunny and Basil would've worn to the recital, and it wouldn't be surprising to assume that both of the outfits from 4 years ago would still fit, considering that Sunny (and likely Basil as well) has had his growth stunted from lack of nutrition during his time of self-isolation

this is the one thing, including the events leading up to it, is the only instance in a game or media in general where i started having an anxiety attack for a game to grip me on such an emotional level like nothing before it had is so insane and i absolutely love this game for it, so for what its worth, im glad it gave me an anxiety attack lmao
That’s how I was during the Omori fight, to me during those moments, heck, even here during Basils fight, it felt like I was really in Sunny’s shoes and I felt genuinely guilty. Especially when Omori starts telling you things like “you loved her and you killed her”, that’s when my anxiety really began to spiked up.

With sunny being all quiet, a depressed teen isolating himself and trying to escape the harsh reality, it's easy for anyone to relate, making those final battles even more anxiety inducing
at this point in the game i was so in shock from the mari reveal that i couldn't comprehend what was going on,,, i dont think i even read the dialogue properly
tbh I loved how this game portrayed mental breakdowns/panic attacks how some of them even though you do things you are supposed to do it doesn’t help and you have to find new ways to overcome it and how for the really bad ones like *cough cough* this one nothing helps and you just have to hope you gets through it because most shows/games just when portraying panic attacks/breakdowns a character takes deep breaths and all of sudden they are all ok!! even though that’s not true half of the time
This was when I started to cry for real I loved Basil and didn't want to hurt him. So I reloaded the map and went to sleep....i should have fought him. (Spoilers) Seeing him dead was worse then fighting him. Had to stop playing for a while because I was traumatized.

Spoilers for an ending below I was honestly so scared of getting a bad end that I went back to sleep right before this fight and got the ending where basil killed himself and where something haunts sunny forever. The police sirens in the end credits really broke me.
Basil just reallllllllllly wanted to protect sunny. That’s some dedication. Basil’s action inadvertently made sunny’s sins even worse and caused both of them so much anguish, but they were kids who didn’t know better so the regret and guilt they felt as they grew older mustve been worse
I interpreted that as Basil literally stabbing sunny with his gardening shears and *reaching inside through his skin*. It's a less morbid description of what is happening and I think draws attention to how at that moment everything isn't in focus. Or it could even be how Sunny's Something was an inner demon of his, hence Basil trying to kill/reach for Sunny's Something
What I learned from this fight personally, is that on this true route, you are not fighting Basil, you are fighting with him. To save him from suicide, to save him from his Something from doing such horrid things. While on the hikikomori route, you actually fight him in your dreams instead of actually helping him, by simply repressing the truth in which Dream Basil desperately wanted you to see and accept.
From the sounds of the sirens, I though one of them had killed the other, and I was stressed out through the entire rest of the game until I found out both of them are still alive
Maybe it's nothing but I like the detail about how much damage they do to each other. Sunny does more damage to Basil than he does to him. I think it's either a representation that Basil doesn't actually want to hurt him and/or he's weaker than him and/or he's so distraught that it's hard to him to seriously hurt him on his own. Sunny does more damage likely cause he's scared and trying to defend himself since he wants to run so badly. Maybe he feels a bit less remorse hurting Basil due to maybe distancing himself so much and defending himself? How much violence he's used to in his head. Like how he cut Aubrey with a knife when they first fought
also, it's implied basil tried physically restraining him at one point so it's likely sunny's adrenaline kicked in, and that's why basil got beat the fuck up. i can imagine him punching, kicking, biting, scratching, etc. in an attempt to get away, since the second basil tries to keep him still, he knows what's about to happen.
Kind of off-topic but I’m wearing headphones and hearing the noise of the dialogue when they’re talking, I realize there’s some echo in it, like Basil really is talking to you, his voice echoing off the walls. Dunno how to describe it, but damn, helps immerse the viewer into the game even more
What I get from this is before the freak out Sunny is mostly trying to keep himself from really hurting Basil in a major way but after his freak out the red splotches to me indicate the fight has gotten bad and neither are holding back now. Sunny I think mainly out of self preservation.
Bro this scene makes me cry every single time I see it, especially the part when Sunny devolves when afraid to stressed out. There’s very few other times when I’ve seen a work of fiction so accurately depict a mental breakdown.
He’s not necessarily obsessed with sunny, and it’s not exactly creepy, his lines are very understandable. He’s afraid of being abandoned by Sunny again, after helping him cover up his murder, Sunny locked himself up leaving basil to suffer with not only a loss but a cover up that he had nothing to do with. He’s not unhealthily obsessed with Sunny, he’s just unhealthy in general and seeing Sunny return to him as if nothing happened with the news that he’s going to leave obviously struck something in him. They’re both teenagers in unfortunate positions

He's unhealthy in general, that's true - that doesn't erase that the epicenter of his unhealthiness is Sunny and the secret they share. I fully interpret this scene as the culmination of Basil's obsession, an ultimatum to this attachment to Sunny and to the suffering it brought him, where he comes to realize Sunny's "betrayal" and it breaks him. We know through the storytelling that Basil was a lonely child who was often forgotten and left behind - that being why he latched so strongly onto the first people to show him kindness. And even though they were all Basil's friends, Basil had a special affection towards Sunny, regarding him as his "best friend" (completely one-sided) and idolizing him to a completely unhealthy extent. All of Basil's actions in the game stemmed from Basil's twisted affection for Sunny, as it's stated multiple times in Basil's dialogue. Basil covered up the murder out of a need to "protect Sunny", he even mentions it in this very fight with those very words. The opening sequence is a scene where Basil forces Sunny (Very Strongly Begs Him To, since Sunny was never shown promising anything) to promise him that they will be *together forever.* Basil spent 4 years *waiting for Sunny to return to him,* and decided to end it all because Sunny was about to leave him again. Basil's dialogue all throughout this scene clearly shows that Basil doesn't view Sunny as a person much more than an idea. Basil IDOLIZES Sunny as someone who is "perfect" (Basil's description of Sunny while assigning him the white tulips) and ultimately "good" (his refusal to blame Sunny for the incident because he is a "good person"). I think the weight of the VS BASIL fight is severely undermined by most of the audience, you know. I want you to understand that the context of this fight is that Basil is trying to murder Sunny to "protect him" from the monsters he hallucinates about, so he can then end his own life and they will both be free from Something, together. He monologues a good while about his suicidal ideation while becoming increasingly more aggressive, violent and unstable because Sunny won't let him kill him. I think it's pretty fair to say Basil is obsessed with Sunny. His unhealthy attachment is pretty much the entire point of his character, even.
@@bloomy2121 The argument here is that Basil isn't driven by a pathologic obsession with Sunny and more driven by losing the one person who loved and understood him the most after you faced a trauma together. He would have killed himself and Sunny long before the events of the game, when Sunny left him for the first time. Claiming that "his entire character is about being unhealthily obsessed with Sunny and being creepy" is reductive and not even wholly true. Basil was clear that he wanted to destroy something and not Sunny and you hear in the beginning no real sound of any dangerous weapon, only attack sounds from Sunny pushing Basil away while he tries to get closer and reaching inside Sunny. Only once both get stressed, does Basil really start to hurt Sunny, before he tried to simply reach into him to get rid of something. That is how the scene looks like and strangling can't also be, because we hear no sound of strangling but stab wounds, which is what caused Sunny and Basil wounds and the punching, as you can hear attack sounds from it. You also see in their attacks black auras as these are their delusion of something and while Basil sees Sunny preventing him from getting rid of something, he also like Sunny sees something around them grabbing them. Basil wants Sunny to stop struggling and that he is tired, because Sunny won't let something(Sunny) be killed and he has enough of living with it, just like Sunny. Basil stabbed him there where the Something eye is in terms of position, which shows that Something was the target and Sunny. Basil would never want to hurt his friend, but the trauma makes him not see that he hurts him and is ultimately too deluded to see anything. As we have seen of Basil from both Sunny's and Basil's own perspective, he was always a good friend to him and deep down, Sunny feels response for Basil, which is something he would not do, if all Basil was is an unhealthy and obsessed boy. Basil also isn't delusional due to idolising Sunny, he wants to ignore all negatives thing in period, due to being toxic positive all the time. He knows Sunny has faults, but he is ignoring negativity because he fears it.
I noticed how the attacking sound effects change halfway into the fight from weird sound effects to loud smack noises of them actually beating the shit out of each other.
This is the single darkest, saddest scene in the game. Two teenagers hurting each other in a mental breakdown over their shared failure to handle reality.
Can we talk about the specific design with Basil's Something real quick? Yes, both Sunny's and Basil's represents looming thoughts of guilt and anxiety, yet... We know why Sunny's Something looks the way it does. May I ask why Basil's looks the way it does? I personally feel both Something's have multiple meanings, and when we look at Sunny's, we know why it takes such a form. But Basil's? Basil's hurts me. I want to ask what could have made Basil's Something take the form it has. Here's the thing; whatever made it take the form it has is not because of something Basil saw or did, but it's something he's considered doing that he hasn't yet. In one of the neutral endings, we see what this was. Notice how Sunny's Something is always floating behind him, while Basil's is always spreading out from him. This being said, the fatal wound in Basil? It looks like his Something doesn't it? The dark spot in the abdomen, with blood spreading out on the sides. Please take note of the sharp teeth lining his Something's center. What really hurts, at least to me, is the fact that SUNNY can see it. Basil can see Sunny's due to him being involved in the incident with Mari. Sunny can see Basil's, because I assume, he knows. He knows that Basil is in a bad place to the point where he may take his own life. The two know each other well, were best friends, and share their darkest secret with one another. It wouldn't surprise me if this is why Sunny can tell, as when viewing Basil's room after he's gone, doesn't even get surprised, but mentally hides his room away. Considering Sunny also has thoughts of suicide via knife could be a whole other reason why he can see it too. If you look at it this way, it makes the confrontation all the more stressful. Sorry for the text wall but that's my theory on it's shape. I love this game because people can get different interpretations off of different things in this game, and it allows these thoughts in a very well way.
Basil was literally my favourite character from the moment I met him. I didn’t even recognise him as the person at the star who was with Omori and I thought he was a girl lmao but seeing this fight hurts me so much
They both wanted to kill each other. Not because one hated the other, and not because to hide what happened to Mari. Both are afraid of full acceptance of reality, as well as the consequences of what happened. SOMETHING, is their embodiment of the feeling that haunted them and slowly killed them, all these years. They couldn't take it any longer. Despite the lies, that BASIL says, he doesn't want to be alone, and SUNNY silently tries to achieve his truth in what happened. in the end, both understand what's what. They realize the horror of what happened, as well as the fact that both are to blame. Both do not want to live with it, and take decisive action; after numerous beatings, SUNNY strikes the fatal blow to the chest, and BASIL pierces a friend's eye (almost to the brain) with a sharp object. Both fall.
Sunny's Something is the thoughts in the back of his head, the guilt following him, the ever-present anxiety just around the corner when he looks at the wrong thing. For Sunny, Something represents his denial. Basil's Something is all enveloping, it is devouring him, it stretches to every aspect of his life, growing, spreading, drawing others in. For Basil, he couldn't deny what he did. It reaches out towards everything, representing his need to offload his guilt, the secret behind it, but he can't.
True! I'm honestly astonished I hadn't considered that, lol. But on the flip side, even if Basil doesn't attack you with everyone present, he also won't be able to honest with you about his pain when Mari died. If he felt like he was backed into a corner, or heard them coming ahead of time, he might've just killed himself to begin with.
not...necessarily. if basil really was going to kill himself, then bringing more people mightve made the situation worse. unfortunately, there isnt much of a right or wrong when it comes to stuff like this. because no matter what sunny did, things could always end horribly. when youre in that mindset...its very hard to think logically. it makes you impulsive. and if youve got a weapon in hand it makes things all the more dangerous.
Basil's Something does look like FMAB's Pride's shadow and does resemble most of Basil's clothing. But Basil himself kinda reminds me Chihiro from Danganronpa.
I really couldn’t fight Basil, I mean of how young Sunny and Basil really were just absolutely hurt me. It’s so traumatic but that’s what the game is mostly about I guess- but either way they both deserved better, and based off what my ending was, I truly think things got better. Even if it wasn’t that way, I know it would’ve gotten better sometime. it was really painful to see Sunny and Basil in the hospital like that. Man this game was so good though. Like 9/10. I genuinely think this game is amazing and that the way it was not only trauma but humorous in some ways, like the pet rocks and Kel’s emotions. It shows a good part of the game, even though all of it is good, as in quality. I’m so glad this was a thing and I’m really happy they actually updated it after so long! I’m so happy for OMOCAT and the Omori team, they do such great jobs!
You know what? (SPOILER ALERT) When Sunny and Basil looked back at Mari's hanged corpse (which caused the "birth" of Something), it looked like her right eye bulged out. Then in this battle, Sunny's right eye is stabbed.

@@linaherbst5482 at some point when you pick up a photo, a hyper realistic hand appears in the bottom right corner and a finger is chopped off of it, after four more photos and all the fingers being chopped off, a circle of hands appear all pointing to the center of the circle. The circle chases sunny until it catches him with all the hands pointing straight at him and then you warp to the next area
This is by far one of the most disturbing scenes in the game. This is true psychological horror. It does a great job of showing what it’s like to deal with psychosis- Basil doesn’t mean to hurt Sunny, he’s trying to kill SOMETHING but doesn’t realize that it’s not real. And obviously Sunny doesn’t want to hurt his friend either but when someone is attacking you, you need to defend yourself. Also the fact that they’re just kids makes it way more upsetting. God this game is a depressing masterpiece.
you're one of the few people that i feel got the point. basil's behavior and dialogue really reads like a psycotic break to me, and that makes me endlessly sad for both of them. they're far too young to go through something so awful.

I really like the difference between Sunny's and Basil's something. Sunny's something is like his guilt following him everywhere he goes and into his headspace while Basil's something is like his guilt slowly overtaking and spreading around him. It's cool that you can tell how their guilt is affecting them.
Edit: A lot of people are telling me that Sunny's something's form is based on Mari hanging and Basil's something's form is based on Mari's black hair. I knew that, I just was talking about how cool OMOCAT represented how their guilt of Mari's death were affecting them throughout their lives. OMOCAT and the Omori Team really did a great job conveying that by creating the Somethings.

Let me rephrase that, they all deserve better. Also Sunny and Basil were even younger kids at the time, and dealing with a situation that no kid should have to endure. They're kids, and kids do stupid things.
It's interesting that even in WHITE SPACE the moment of Sunny and Basil being hospitalized is constantly being foreshadowed when you are on low HP, as a heart monitor can be heard while you are close to a Game Over, this game has so many details people might be able to find stuff +5 years after release.

That’s not like you, SUNNY! » It SHOCKED me like even when he is having an anxiety attack after 4 years without Sunny coming to school because of a traumatic experience, being bullied because ‘something’ (or Sunny, or not really) ruined his photos and after Sunny is literally trying to run away he STILL believes in him! That’s really one kind of a best friend
Edit (one year later): It’s crazy how much I didn’t understand Basil and Sunny in that part of the game! I thought he was gentle and just pleading Sunny to stay near him longer, but the more I watch the ending, the more I understand his character. He was probably actually violently yelling at him, after all, he tried to kill himself and Sunny too in a way of “saving him” from “Something”. And not just that, but Sunny tried to run away because his best friend was actually becoming dangerous and was in direct correlation to the event he tried to forget for 4 years. So instead of two best friends panicking and trying to kill each other’s “Something” (like I thought the first time), it’s more of Sunny trying to defend himself when his best friend tries to kill his “Something” (which is actually just him and the trauma), because he’s in too much denial to realise good people can do bad things. That explains in a much better way why Basil asked Sunny to “stop struggling”, if “there wasn’t any other way around this” and if he hated him.
Wow… That’s so interesting. I’m sure I let out other things I’ve noticed, but now that I really realise the scene better, I wouldn’t say he’s a “good kind of best friend”, but for sure one of the most interesting characters in the game.

Sunny and Basil both exhibit symptoms of depression, but different symptoms.
Sunny withdraws from life and into a dream world of his own creation. He sleeps for a majority of the day, doesn't eat very often, has trouble focusing under stress, and, most notably, has suicidal ideation. He carries around a knife that he repeatedly contemplates stabbing himself with. I'm no doctor, but it's fair to describe Omori's behavior as having major depressive disorder, triggered by the events surrounding Mari's death.
Basil, on the other hand, seems to behave quite a bit differently. He keeps a very brave, happy-looking face in public, but when he's alone or with particular company, he starts to see things, lies to himself about Mari's death, and becomes a threat to himself and others as a result of these things. Basil shows symptoms of psychotic/manic depression, triggered by Mari's death and potentially by the bullying he receives at school.
I find these two characters so interesting. They really show how people are affected by grief/loss in drastically different ways.

(I'm not a mental health expert so take this with a grain of salt) but I noticed that they also both display a lot of different symptoms/types of anxiety and PTSD; Basil is constantly worried that everyone will leave him, and he frequently has anxiety attacks. Sunny has 3 phobias and is always afraid of Something following/chasing him, as well as to an extent being afraid of Basil, they both have hallucinations ("Something all around us", Hellmari when you open the door, Something in the mirror, and just their individual Somethings in general), often becoming worse when they're near each other.
(Spoiler warning for right after this fight) Another detail that I wasn't the first to notice, but did think was very clever; Omori is a textbook emotionally exploitative person. Mock, Trick, and Shun are all emotion-based skills, affecting enemies based on their emotions, or in other words, exploiting their emotions. During the final fight against Omori, he exploits Sunny's guilt, telling him things like "People like you don't deserve to live", "Kel/Hero/Aubrey/ Basil/You loved her and you killed her", etc... It really shows how exploitative and manipulative Omori really is. (Also, fun detail, Omori is immune to the emotion "Afraid")
I like how the heart beat monitor at the bottom says "everything is going to be okay" at 4:27.
That phrase is everything wrong with their situation. It can be a really awful way to bottle things up and too much positive emotions can get incredibly toxic.

sorry if this is kinda messed up but after rewatching this scene, I realized a few things and created some predictions
So if Sunny didn't actually check up on Basil during this period and choose to sleep. You would later wake up to find that Basil has ended his life.
So by Basil saying "something behind you, I'll get rid of it once and for all" and "don't be scared, I'm scared too but this is for the better."
My theory is that Basil was trying to commit a double suicide with Sunny. He didn't want to be alone and he thought ending his life was the only solution to get rid of the trauma and pain.
It was an interesting detail into Basil's mind, I don't know if it's true or not but would be fun to look into.

This theory is also supported by the lines Basil says during the fight itself. Basil was trying to kill Sunny but after that, he intends on ending his own life as well.

This was honest to god one of the hardest parts to get through, i couldn't bear being forced to hurt Basil it really made me cry
I coped by realizing that if it wasn't for Basil maybe Sunny would have went to his parents and explained what happened which while regrettable is way better than the alternative of Basil convincing Sunny to hang his sister to frame it as a suicide. He made a already tragic situation 20x worse so ya I don't care about him anymore.

I'm pretty sure that his parents would have came home eventually and then Sunny would have had to explain himself. All basil did was put Sunny in a almost irredeemable position. Even for a kid, there has to be something seriously wrong with you for you to come up with the idea to fake a suicide.

Basil doesnt actually attack Sunny, he simply reaches inside, between this and the particle effects on Sunny's and Basil's attacks, its like their collective grief is tearing eachother apart, and it escalates and escalates until Basil finally stabs Sunny in the eye, man this game is amazing.
How do you explain Sunny and Basil's other injuries during the final hospital scenes though? Clearly they must have done something more to eachother, other I don't see why Basil, at the very least, would be hospitalized in the first place.

I’m assuming Sunny realizes that there’s no other way out other than to fight, since calming down wasn’t working. The red flashes on the screen after the cutscene show that Sunny and Basil are literally hitting each other until it culminates in Basil severely injuring Sunny’s right eye with the garden shears. Well, that’s how I interpreted it. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

One of my favorite details in the game is that in a lot of the cutscenes, including this one, Sunny and Basil wear the same outfit. The outfit contrasts the casual wear of the other friends, and is similar to Mari's formal uniform in Headspace. I guess it symbolizes the fact that the incident involved all three of them and the others don't know yet. The outfit is also presumably what both Sunny and Basil would've worn to the recital, and it wouldn't be surprising to assume that both of the outfits from 4 years ago would still fit, considering that Sunny (and likely Basil as well) has had his growth stunted from lack of nutrition during his time of self-isolation

Despite this abandonment by the person you gave up your innocence and sanity to protect, you keep his secret. You keep it even after he ruins your photo album. You keep it even after you get blamed for the photo album. Even after you get bullied over it. Even as your grandmother's health slowly deteriorates. Even as you slowly lose your sanity, bit by bit, day after day, bowing under the weight of the overwhelming guilt.
And then after four years of this hell, the friend that you walked into this hell for in the first place _finally_ comes back into your life…
…only for you to find out he's moving away in three days, and didn't even tell you.

this is the one thing, including the events leading up to it, is the only instance in a game or media in general where i started having an anxiety attack
for a game to grip me on such an emotional level like nothing before it had is so insane and i absolutely love this game for it, so for what its worth, im glad it gave me an anxiety attack lmao
That’s how I was during the Omori fight, to me during those moments, heck, even here during Basils fight, it felt like I was really in Sunny’s shoes and I felt genuinely guilty. Especially when Omori starts telling you things like “you loved her and you killed her”, that’s when my anxiety really began to spiked up.

With sunny being all quiet, a depressed teen isolating himself and trying to escape the harsh reality, it's easy for anyone to relate, making those final battles even more anxiety inducing

at this point in the game i was so in shock from the mari reveal that i couldn't comprehend what was going on,,, i dont think i even read the dialogue properly

tbh I loved how this game portrayed mental breakdowns/panic attacks how some of them even though you do things you are supposed to do it doesn’t help and you have to find new ways to overcome it and how for the really bad ones like *cough cough* this one nothing helps and you just have to hope you gets through it because most shows/games just when portraying panic attacks/breakdowns a character takes deep breaths and all of sudden they are all ok!! even though that’s not true half of the time
This was when I started to cry for real I loved Basil and didn't want to hurt him. So I reloaded the map and went to sleep....i should have fought him.

Everyone talks about how devastating the fight with Aubrey in the church is. As emotional as that fight is this one really twists my stomach.

I was honestly so scared of getting a bad end that I went back to sleep right before this fight and got the ending where basil killed himself and where something haunts sunny forever. The police sirens in the end credits really broke me.

Basil just reallllllllllly wanted to protect sunny. That’s some dedication. Basil’s action inadvertently made sunny’s sins even worse and caused both of them so much anguish, but they were kids who didn’t know better so the regret and guilt they felt as they grew older mustve been worse

I interpreted that as Basil literally stabbing sunny with his gardening shears and *reaching inside through his skin*. It's a less morbid description of what is happening and I think draws attention to how at that moment everything isn't in focus. Or it could even be how Sunny's Something was an inner demon of his, hence Basil trying to kill/reach for Sunny's Something

What I learned from this fight personally, is that on this true route, you are not fighting Basil, you are fighting with him. To save him from suicide, to save him from his Something from doing such horrid things. While on the hikikomori route, you actually fight him in your dreams instead of actually helping him, by simply repressing the truth in which Dream Basil desperately wanted you to see and accept.

From the sounds of the sirens, I though one of them had killed the other, and I was stressed out through the entire rest of the game until I found out both of them are still alive

I just noticed that the heartbeats when the battle ended are saying "Everything is going to be okay."
Maybe it's nothing but I like the detail about how much damage they do to each other. Sunny does more damage to Basil than he does to him. I think it's either a representation that Basil doesn't actually want to hurt him and/or he's weaker than him and/or he's so distraught that it's hard to him to seriously hurt him on his own. Sunny does more damage likely cause he's scared and trying to defend himself since he wants to run so badly. Maybe he feels a bit less remorse hurting Basil due to maybe distancing himself so much and defending himself? How much violence he's used to in his head. Like how he cut Aubrey with a knife when they first fought
also, it's implied basil tried physically restraining him at one point so it's likely sunny's adrenaline kicked in, and that's why basil got beat the fuck up. i can imagine him punching, kicking, biting, scratching, etc. in an attempt to get away, since the second basil tries to keep him still, he knows what's about to happen.
I feel bad for everyone in this game, more for sunny, basil and aubrey.

What I get from this is before the freak out Sunny is mostly trying to keep himself from really hurting Basil in a major way but after his freak out the red splotches to me indicate the fight has gotten bad and neither are holding back now. Sunny I think mainly out of self preservation.
Bro this scene makes me cry every single time I see it, especially the part when Sunny devolves when afraid to stressed out. There’s very few other times when I’ve seen a work of fiction so accurately depict a mental breakdown.

He’s not necessarily obsessed with sunny, and it’s not exactly creepy, his lines are very understandable. He’s afraid of being abandoned by Sunny again, after helping him cover up his murder, Sunny locked himself up leaving basil to suffer with not only a loss but a cover up that he had nothing to do with. He’s not unhealthily obsessed with Sunny, he’s just unhealthy in general and seeing Sunny return to him as if nothing happened with the news that he’s going to leave obviously struck something in him. They’re both teenagers in unfortunate positions

@@fml4751 I... completely disagree. I fully interpret this scene as the culmination of Basil's obsession, an ultimatum to this attachment to Sunny and to the suffering it brought him, where he comes to realize Sunny's "betrayal" and it breaks him.
We know through the storytelling that Basil was a lonely child who was often forgotten and left behind - that being why he latched so strongly onto the first people to show him kindness. And even though they were all Basil's friends, Basil had a special affection towards Sunny, regarding him as his "best friend" (completely one-sided) and idolizing him to a completely unhealthy extent.
All of Basil's actions in the game stemmed from Basil's twisted affection for Sunny, as it's stated multiple times in Basil's dialogue. Basil covered up the murder out of a need to "protect Sunny", he even mentions it in this very fight with those very words. The opening sequence is a scene where Basil forces Sunny (Very Strongly Begs Him To, since Sunny was never shown promising anything) to promise him that they will be *together forever.* Basil spent 4 years *waiting for Sunny to return to him,* and decided to end it all because Sunny was about to leave him again.
Basil's dialogue all throughout this scene clearly shows that Basil doesn't view Sunny as a person much more than an idea. Basil IDOLIZES Sunny as someone who is "perfect" (Basil's description of Sunny while assigning him the white tulips) and ultimately "good" (his refusal to blame Sunny for the incident because he is a "good person").
I think the weight of the VS BASIL fight is severely undermined by most of the audience, you know. I want you to understand that the context of this fight is that Basil is trying to murder Sunny to "protect him" from the monsters he hallucinates about, so he can then end his own life and they will both be free from Something, together. He monologues a good while about his suicidal ideation while becoming increasingly more aggressive, violent and unstable because Sunny won't let him kill him.
I think it's pretty fair to say Basil is obsessed with Sunny. His unhealthy attachment is pretty much the entire point of his character, even.
@@bloomy2121 The argument here is that Basil isn't driven by a pathologic obsession with Sunny and more driven by losing the one person who loved and understood him the most after you faced a trauma together. He would have killed himself and Sunny long before the events of the game, when Sunny left him for the first time. Claiming that "his entire character is about being unhealthily obsessed with Sunny and being creepy" is reductive and not even wholly true. Basil was clear that he wanted to destroy something and not Sunny and you hear in the beginning no real sound of any dangerous weapon, only attack sounds from Sunny pushing Basil away while he tries to get closer and reaching inside Sunny. Only once both get stressed, does Basil really start to hurt Sunny, before he tried to simply reach into him to get rid of something. That is how the scene looks like and strangling can't also be, because we hear no sound of strangling but stab wounds, which is what caused Sunny and Basil wounds and the punching, as you can hear attack sounds from it. You also see in their attacks black auras as these are their delusion of something and while Basil sees Sunny preventing him from getting rid of something, he also like Sunny sees something around them grabbing them. Basil wants Sunny to stop struggling and that he is tired, because Sunny won't let something(Sunny) be killed and he has enough of living with it, just like Sunny. Basil stabbed him there where the Something eye is in terms of position, which shows that Something was the target and Sunny.
Basil would never want to hurt his friend, but the trauma makes him not see that he hurts him and is ultimately too deluded to see anything. As we have seen of Basil from both Sunny's and Basil's own perspective, he was always a good friend to him and deep down, Sunny feels response for Basil, which is something he would not do, if all Basil was is an unhealthy and obsessed boy. Basil also isn't delusional due to idolising Sunny, he wants to ignore all negatives thing in period, due to being toxic positive all the time. He knows Sunny has faults, but he is ignoring negativity because he fears it.
This games details are just insane.. The fact half of the screen goes black, becauss Basil stabbed Sunny's right eye.. Ugh, this game is amazing!

I noticed how the attacking sound effects change halfway into the fight from weird sound effects to loud smack noises of them actually beating the shit out of each other.
It's the emotion "Stressed Out" coupled with the music alongside it that makes me question what the third tier of the "Afraid" emotion is.

Can we talk about the specific design with Basil's Something real quick? Yes, both Sunny's and Basil's represents looming thoughts of guilt and anxiety, yet...
We know why Sunny's Something looks the way it does. May I ask why Basil's looks the way it does? I personally feel both Something's have multiple meanings, and when we look at Sunny's, we know why it takes such a form. But Basil's? Basil's hurts me.
I want to ask what could have made Basil's Something take the form it has. Here's the thing; whatever made it take the form it has is not because of something Basil saw or did, but it's something he's considered doing that he hasn't yet. In one of the neutral endings, we see what this was.
Notice how Sunny's Something is always floating behind him, while Basil's is always spreading out from him. This being said, the fatal wound in Basil? It looks like his Something doesn't it? The dark spot in the abdomen, with blood spreading out on the sides. Please take note of the sharp teeth lining his Something's center.
What really hurts, at least to me, is the fact that SUNNY can see it. Basil can see Sunny's due to him being involved in the incident with Mari. Sunny can see Basil's, because I assume, he knows. He knows that Basil is in a bad place to the point where he may take his own life. The two know each other well, were best friends, and share their darkest secret with one another. It wouldn't surprise me if this is why Sunny can tell, as when viewing Basil's room after he's gone, doesn't even get surprised, but mentally hides his room away. Considering Sunny also has thoughts of suicide via knife could be a whole other reason why he can see it too.
If you look at it this way, it makes the confrontation all the more stressful.
Sorry for the text wall but that's my theory on it's shape. I love this game because people can get different interpretations off of different things in this game, and it allows these thoughts in a very well way.
Basil's something is also surronding him, making basil completely overwhelmed by what basil's SOMETHING represents, guilt(?)

Basil was literally my favourite character from the moment I met him. I didn’t even recognise him as the person at the star who was with Omori and I thought he was a girl lmao but seeing this fight hurts me so much
on the first day when i heard about omori i saw basil and i was like: "HE'S SO DAMN ADORABLE"
until i watched the playthrough
They both wanted to kill each other. Not because one hated the other, and not because to hide what happened to Mari. Both are afraid of full acceptance of reality, as well as the consequences of what happened. SOMETHING, is their embodiment of the feeling that haunted them and slowly killed them, all these years. They couldn't take it any longer. Despite the lies, that BASIL says, he doesn't want to be alone, and SUNNY silently tries to achieve his truth in what happened. in the end, both understand what's what. They realize the horror of what happened, as well as the fact that both are to blame. Both do not want to live with it, and take decisive action; after numerous beatings, SUNNY strikes the fatal blow to the chest, and BASIL pierces a friend's eye (almost to the brain) with a sharp object. Both fall.

Sunny's Something is the thoughts in the back of his head, the guilt following him, the ever-present anxiety just around the corner when he looks at the wrong thing. For Sunny, Something represents his denial.
Basil's Something is all enveloping, it is devouring him, it stretches to every aspect of his life, growing, spreading, drawing others in.
For Basil, he couldn't deny what he did. It reaches out towards everything, representing his need to offload his guilt, the secret behind it, but he can't.
This was well worth it, so powerful, so intense, and I got to see basil
This situation would have gone a lot better if Sunny woke up his friends and brought them to Basil’s room instead of going alone.
True! I'm honestly astonished I hadn't considered that, lol. But on the flip side, even if Basil doesn't attack you with everyone present, he also won't be able to honest with you about his pain when Mari died. If he felt like he was backed into a corner, or heard them coming ahead of time, he might've just killed himself to begin with.
not...necessarily. if basil really was going to kill himself, then bringing more people mightve made the situation worse. unfortunately, there isnt much of a right or wrong when it comes to stuff like this. because no matter what sunny did, things could always end horribly. when youre in that mindset...its very hard to think logically. it makes you impulsive. and if youve got a weapon in hand it makes things all the more dangerous.

Basil's Something does look like FMAB's Pride's shadow and does resemble most of Basil's clothing.

I really couldn’t fight Basil, I mean of how young Sunny and Basil really were just absolutely hurt me. It’s so traumatic but that’s what the game is mostly about I guess- but either way they both deserved better, and based off what my ending was, I truly think things got better. Even if it wasn’t that way, I know it would’ve gotten better sometime. it was really painful to see Sunny and Basil in the hospital like that. Man this game was so good though. Like 9/10. I genuinely think this game is amazing and that the way it was not only trauma but humorous in some ways, like the pet rocks and Kel’s emotions. It shows a good part of the game, even though all of it is good, as in quality. I’m so glad this was a thing and I’m really happy they actually updated it after so long! I’m so happy for OMOCAT and the Omori team, they do such great jobs!

When Sunny and Basil looked back at Mari's hanged corpse (which caused the "birth" of Something), it looked like her right eye bulged out.
Then in this battle, Sunny's right eye is stabbed.

@@linaherbst5482 at some point when you pick up a photo, a hyper realistic hand appears in the bottom right corner and a finger is chopped off of it, after four more photos and all the fingers being chopped off, a circle of hands appear all pointing to the center of the circle. The circle chases sunny until it catches him with all the hands pointing straight at him and then you warp to the next area

This is by far one of the most disturbing scenes in the game. This is true psychological horror. It does a great job of showing what it’s like to deal with psychosis- Basil doesn’t mean to hurt Sunny, he’s trying to kill SOMETHING but doesn’t realize that it’s not real. And obviously Sunny doesn’t want to hurt his friend either but when someone is attacking you, you need to defend yourself. Also the fact that they’re just kids makes it way more upsetting. God this game is a depressing masterpiece.
you're one of the few people that i feel got the point. basil's behavior and dialogue really reads like a psycotic break to me, and that makes me endlessly sad for both of them. they're far too young to go through something so awful.
When you think about it, sad as this is, they basically beat some sense into each other
