This is a 1945 Singer 15K treadle. The bobbin has to be loaded into the bobbin case and then inserted underneath the machine. It has the central bobbin mechanism for forming the stitch, making it suitable for free motion quilting.
The Singer 15 class of machines was widely copied in Japan and the Far East after world War 2. They are known as Japanese 15 clones and are threaded in exactly the same way.

Thank you so much for this! My grandma taught me how to use this exact model, only slightly older (1934 made) when I was 10 years old. I grew up with the sound of this machine as soundtrack of my chilhood afternoons, i used to make dresses for my dolls on it and 21 years later...i have it in my house now and I am desperately trying to remember what she taught me so many years ago.:) Thank you! So glad this video is still available. I have a recently purchased 1921 15K and a Japanese clone - now they are both threaded.

Hi Freycob, this tutorial has brought me back so many memories of my darling mum. Like your machine, mine too looks a little worst for wear. Mum used to make all our clothes, her little legs going for gold like an olympic runner! Alas I can't use it but I keep it still in memoriam.

Thank you so much Lizzie. I have a 1947 model, made in Clydebank - an area I know very well. Sadly the site of the former Singer factory is now an area filled with call centres, although the train station, Singer, still exists. I also have a beautiful 1874 treadle machine which needs a bit of resoration although it still works. These machines are things of beauty and I intend to make use of both of them. My lovely Mum-in-Law has her own Mum-in-Law's 1929 model. Engineering like this needs to be preserved and Scotland is still so very proud of them. :-) x

Thnak you so much Lizzy, your explanations are so clear and easy to understand and thanks to you, I've been able to fit my SINGER sewing machine a model from the 1936 years, renewed, I acquired it yesterday at a second hand shop without any manual. It works now as a clock with such a beautiful sound. I'm so happy to have at least such a good machine. My grandmother had one too, she was a dressmaker !

Thank you so much for this tutorial. My old Singer sewing machine is similar to yours!! It used to belong to my late grandmother and after 25 years since her passing, for the first time, I'm learning how to use it from you. Your tutorial really helped me a lot to understand how to use it. Love it! Appreciate it so much. :)

Thanks for the clear to follow instruction. My wife sews on her 1951 Singer 15J (Canadian) and I have never thought of the sound as noise. Cell phones are noise, trucks are noise, air compressors are noise. That 15J sounds like a choir of angles.
    Really, thanks again.

I didn't realized that I was threading my Mercury Dial-O-Matic sewing machine(which is designed the same way as yours) wrong until I looked at your video. Oh! Thanks to you and UA-cam for making this communication possible.
I was on the verge of giving my sewing machine away because I couldn't understand why it wasn't sewing right. But, now after watching your video...the problem is solved. THANKS AGAIN!!!

Thank you very much. In recent corona virus outbreak it helped me to operate my Singer 15K from 1912! Test stitches are looking good and tomorrow I'll get to making some face masks.
Even with the low quality of video there are the static pics and usage of red thread is genial. Thank you a lot :-)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I have been trying to thread my "new" vintage Japanese clone (very similar to Singer model 15) but the manuals are very difficult to see. My problem was with how to wind the thread around the tensioner. Now, after watching this I am going to go give it another try!

Hi Lizzie, I just want to thank you so much for this video. My late grandaunt passed on without handing down any knowledge about sewing with her machine and ever since she passed, nobody has used it. Now with your video I managed to get it working again. Hi Lizzie,
This is an excellent video. Very clear and easy to follow, and the still pictures make the thread path even more evident. Owners of mid-century Japanese-made class 15 machines can use this video, as well, as they thread exactly the same way.

Thanks for this. I got an old Dressmaker at Goodwill ($13)--very sound machine--but it threads on the end of the head instead of on the side facing the user. I'd never encountered this before and it took me awhile to figure it out. Was able to verify I'd finally gotten it right thanks to your video, as the configuration is exactly the same. Wish I'd seen this earlier. Would have saved a lot of trial and error.

I'm not able to use it for lack of leg strenghth but will one day have it restored to it's former glory. I live 3 miles from the Singer family Mansion which is now a museum and local council building. Sadly it is in the pipeline to convert it into a hotel, albeit retaining all it's historical features. Many thanks again.

    Lizzie,
Your Singer 15K produced in the the Kilbowie, Clydebank, Scotland plant must be different from my Singer 15-91 produced in the Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA plant.
My Singer 15-91 threads exactly as you have described and depicted except on the Singer 15-91 the flat of the needle is on the left and the eye of the needle is threaded from right to left as you are facing the front of the machine (sewing position). The instruction manual with my machine and posted on ISMACS website confirm this needle eye threading on the Singer 15-91.
I am surprised that there is a difference between the UK and the USA Singer 15 models.
    Mark.

Nice video. Interesting however is our 1947 and 1951 Singer manuals clearly shows our model 15 to thread the needle from right to left, and the bobbin to rotate counter clockwise in the bobbin case, just the opposite to your video. Also, though not shown in your video, the needle flat goes to the left.

This is a beautiful sewing machine. My neighbor so happen to give me a sewing machine because I told her back in the day I use to love sewing. I use to make EVERYTHING for me and my mom and I loved it. I love sewing, so I decided to see if it works..and truly it works....I love it and find out that I have a 1948 Singer 15-91 Sewing Machine..and to see this video is simply AWESOME!!! The only thing that puzzled me was where to put the thread and I see from your video, it sits on the top...and as I look at it...there is a hole on top of the machine, but nothing int he hole to hold the thread, so where can I go to get something to hold the thread? Please respond. I appreciate you showing this video, you have given me so much info on this vintage sewing machine and I just love it. I can't wait to get back to sewing. Please help me out on how to put something on the top, so the thread will stand steadily. Awesome demonstration, I was wondering how to thread the machine...lol..and with your demonstration, I now know...thank you so much....appreciate it so much. Thank you!..:-)
