Replace a Broken Deadbolt Lock and Keep Using the Original Key

  • Replace a broken double-cylinder deadbolt lock with a new one. Use smartkey technology to match the lock to your existing housekey.
    Double deadbolts have a keyhole on both sides and are intended for use in doors with a glass window, so that a burglar cannot break the window, reach in, and unlock the deadbolt on the inside. But I put them in all my exterior doors with the thought that a burglar may come in through a broken window, but he is going to have to go back out that window, too, because he can't get any of the doors open.
    I installed the original deadbolt in this video 14 years ago. According to Kwikset's webpage, their products have a lifetime warranty. I'm pursuing that and will see how far I get in obtaining a replacement or refund. The result will be reported here.
    www.kwikset.com...
    UPDATE: I spoke with customer support at Kwikset (1-800-327-LOCK (5625) ). I wish I remembered the name of the representative I spoke with; he was both pleasant and professional. I described the situation. He said he would need a picture of the old deadbolt, the new one, and the bottom of the box. I showed him this video and asked if it would do, and he said of course. So a replacement lock is on its way to me. They don't do refunds, but I can take it to Home Depot and see if they will.

    All I can say is, keep making videos. You are good at this. You have a way of explaining things thoroughly but quickly enough to hold our attention. This morning I discovered my deadbolt just spinning and although it's locked, in unable to unlock it. I believe I'll be replacing it today but want to keep the old keys. Appreciate your help!

      @@Woodtoolsworkshop Smartkey is a good technology but you should rather go to a locksmith and get a high security lock like a a Medeco deadbolt. Smartkey is not a high security lock because the cylinder is made out of all plastic parts and can be opened with a flathead screwdriver and force.

    Great video instilled confidence in DIY for me. I had to replace a Schlage double cylinder deadbolt that is not made anymore. Hole in the door was too small. Home Depot has a kit for about $21 that you can use to enlarge an existing hole using a special drill bit that cut out exactly the size you need for standard deadbolts. Really easy to do. Then installing the Schlage deadbolt was super easy as in this video. Only difference is that Schlage does not have a Smart Key option. That was OK with me.

    Current instructions (2020-2021) for SmartKey lock installation differs a bit from this video:
    1. Perform the re-keying with the door open, or with an alternate way of getting into the secured space if something should go wrong.
    2. After inserting the target key ("house key") into the lock, turn it 180° (not 90°) counter-clockwise, then return it to the vertical position and withdraw the key to complete re-keying.

  • @mikegalligano2544
    @mikegalligano2544 7 років тому +15

    That was quite an easy fix. No need to replace if the c-clip just popped off. Smart key also sucks.

    • @Weslag1
      @Weslag1 6 років тому +4

      I've had two Smartkey deadbolts seize up on me and keep me out of the house in the last 3 years, and no amount of squirt-in lubricants made any difference. Currently in the process of replacing all of my door locks with standard entry sets, and re-keying them myself; much harder than changing a Smartkey lock, but not rocket science either if you just have the kit for it.
      Agree, Smartkey locks suck, in addition to being very quick and simple to force with a screwdriver and a pair of vice grips, with no indication afterwards that it's been done, unless you decide to re-key the Smartkey lock, which will no longer be possible.

    • @williamguzman2663
      @williamguzman2663 3 роки тому +1

      The old deadbolt's interior Smartkey cylinder actually broke on one side where the c-clip would fit. Look at the gray piece that the tip of the tail piece is facing toward at 4:47. That gray piece with a little slot is the part that broke off. Also, this shows how poor the construction of the Kwikset Smartkey deadbolts is, and why people need to think twice before buying a Kwikset Smartkey.

  • @Chris153758
    @Chris153758 Рік тому

    The funny thing about this video is that he didn't actually need to buy a new deadbolt. The clip that holds the cylinder in the housing had fallen off. It just needed to be put back together & tightened up. Oh well. 😂

    • @davidmcglumphy2240
      @davidmcglumphy2240 5 місяців тому +1

      I had a similar problem, but the reason the clip came off was because part of the cylinder was broken (and thus had to be replaced). Maybe that was the case here but just not evident.

    I saved myself a locksmith bill. The double deadbolt on my front door
    has been very hard to turn to unlock,but operated smoothly
    when locking. It was so stiff I could have bent the key,and when it did turn,it released with a loud clack.I took it
    apart,and lubed and worked the bolt back and forth,and it suddenly
    started to slide in and out normally. The only thing I don't know
    is why it was sticking in the first place-it was definitely binding inside the bolt carriage. Corrosion inside the
    bolt housing? Anyway,she works smoothly again for both locking and
    unlocking.

    I just installed one of these, with help from the video - thanks! Instructions that came with the lock were just a little hard to follow, what is to prevent somebody using the smart key technology to re key the door to their key and gaining entry?

    • @Woodtoolsworkshop
      @Woodtoolsworkshop  7 років тому +2

      To rekey the door lock, they have to have the current key. Before you can use the new key, you have to turn the cylinder 1/4 turn with the current one. So if they have the current key, then they already have entry without having to rekey. The only bad situation I can think of is if you and your spouse have a fight, and one of you rekeys while the other is gone, locking you out of the house. :)

With the smart-key, surely you would have done the same on both sides, but you just showed the re-keying process for the outer lock cylinder. Perhaps you should have mentioned this as to not confuse the newbies and/or idiots.

      Correct. People that buy these Kwikset & Weiser Smart Key locks should watch Mr Locksmith's video on how to open a Smart Key lock in less than 10 seconds without using the key.
      These Smart Key locks also have a bad reputation for spontaneously resetting themselves so that the key no longer works, especially on exterior doors that get direct sunlight on them.

      Exactly. I had a vacant rent house burglarized some time back, and all my hand tools were carried out of the window they broke in through, but when they got ready to make off with the table saw and ladders, they found double-cylinder deadbolts in their way. So that stuff stayed.
      I wish I could have seen their faces when they got inside and discovered they were locked in. But at home, when the house is occupied, each double cylinder deadbolt has a key in the lock.
