      My dad bought shares in the Channel Tunnel when they were originally sold, so as a young kid I was fortunate to be among the first to travel on the Eurostar. Before our trip he told me the fish story 🐠 my jaw dropped, and I was like ‘wow’ 😲. To this day finding out the truth counts as one the most bitterly disappointing moments of my life 😂😂😂

    I think that Amsterdam is fast becoming one of the most important cities in Europe behind London and Paris as much for its handy location and that it's one of the most important hubs in Europe.
    On top of that it has an extremely beautiful city, very friendly people and a great airport and a brilliant airline.
    The Dutch people are so easygoing and helpful too.

      Amsterdam has the great mix of the old and new. Everyone thinks the entire city is just canals, bikes and old tall buildings.
      The suburbs and outskirts are bleeding edge modern and look like everywhere else. Huge retail parks, everyone in cars, big housing estates with 1970s flats, gleaming glass office blocks, etc.

    The Eurostar can not stop at Schiphol Airport because the platforms are not long enough (and some other issues) to serve the train. We are working on a solution for that.

    • @alexmcwhirter6602
      @alexmcwhirter6602 4 роки тому +1

      Is that correct ? When Eurostar said it would launch Amsterdam services several years ago there were stops planned at Antwerp, Rotterdam and Schiphol. Isn't the main issue the situation with Customs/Immigration/Security clearance which is why the current terminals (specially built for Eurostar) at Rotterdam and Amsterdam still *cannot be used.

    • @JBS319
      @JBS319 4 роки тому +2

      @@alexmcwhirter6602 the train can run TO Amsterdam. coming back FROM Amsterdam the Eurostar train operates as a Thalys serving stations as far as Brussels as there aren't border checks set up at the other stations. Passengers for London cannot take this train they would not be able to get through passport checks in time to reboard. So an earlier Intercity Direct or Thalys service makes the easy connection at Brussels to Eurostar services. Schiphol is a problem because the train is double the length of most other trains that service the station, and would not fit on the platform and possibly even block the points for other platforms.

    I visited Amsterdam on Friday and returned Monday, (slightly bad timing with Corona), I flew from Leeds Bradford with KLM and the flight only took 50 minutes! Amazing how you can be in Yorkshire one moment and then in Amsterdam before you can even finish an hour long TV episode...although of course then there is the hour trip to the airport on top! Schiphol was a good destination for me as I booked one of the IBIS hotels around there for £50 a night which was fantastic value (again I suspect Corona had influence in pricing!) which had a regular free shuttle bus to/from the airport, so I could just return to the airport and jump on the train into central Amsterdam...the flight back was fun too due to the 1 hour timezone change, which essentially means it takes you 0 minutes to get back to the UK! ;)

    the Eurostar and then the Benelux train.I didnt mind the extra day or so extra ,because for getting their was part of the experience.I last went their 2 years ago after a gap of 8 years and

ECSTASY!'' like it was a market selling fish and cheese, with guys posted on corners as lookouts (especially down to Beursstraat copshop) to whistle a code if scowtoe (police) were on the way (showing off my Surinamese language skills there lol). It's definitely lost it's mojo in the centre and unlike before, the tourists are cocky and not slightly in awe and a bit scared like they were earlier, they now make up more than 90% of the people you see in the centre, to such an extent that nowadays most Amsterdammers avoid the red light and the centre of Amsterdam like it's the plague.

    A real pity that the proposed regional hubs for Eurostar didn't take shape, I took a train from Glasgow Central in September and finding a through ticket via Eurostar was impossible. It would include your Virgin train ticket to London but and the pricing didn't reflect what it could cost separately and most annoyingly many trains you can take are not available. For example, it shows no trains available on Sunday but I, of course, did get a train to London and onwards to Glasgow by booking separately. I wrote afterwards to my local MSP who secured a response from Eurostar which basically tried to explain the omission of some tickets but noted no plans to improve the availability and reach into Scotland.

    It's marginally more convenient than a flight. Flight is 1 hr, but you'd spend some time and money going to/from the airport. Eurostar is somewhat more expensive (than non-budget airlines, it's much more expensive than budget airlines) and takes 3 hrs, but it takes you downtown to downtown + you have internet the whole time. So... for a short distance like that, train barely wins. But for anything over 400 miles, flying makes a lot more sense.

My street in London is now home to multiple HMO's full of Polish men who drink and fight all nigh then seemingly spend the day flytipping anything they can lay their hands on. The family butcher became a polish supermarket and the one decent pub became a sports bar showing foreign channels and providing space for impromptu punch ups. The local school is devoid of white British children and one by one neighbours are selling and moving to the country. Hope I never get ill because it's now impossible to see a doctor given the population boom- ten to each house in some cases. I work with a lovely Romanian guy, who proudly tells me how much he sends back to his Romanian family each month and how he has been able to buy land over there by spending nothing in the UK. His elderly mother moved over to be with him and syphon thousands off the NHS. Yeah, modern Europe is great, if you're a formerly impoverished Eastern European.

Before the open borders you literally couldn't cross the market square in town (a strange thing to know if you're standing there). Nowadays the fact that both sides of the market are in different countries is invisible to people who don't know it. There are more borders like this that people cross regularly without realising it wasn't once this easy. Nowadays Europe has loads of highways there are still customs offices you can drive by in about 5 seconds instead of the sometimes hour long queues that were there once. Furthermore closed borders does not necessarily stop immigration. You don't "have to live with the consequences of open borders", you're just racist.

    Noel - Glad you reported on this Eurostar service and I noted you took the new (third) daily service. I feel the main advantage of standard premier is its use of first class seating. Business premier, which uses the same seating, is simply too expensive. If you found the Siemens trains to be more spacious (than the older Alsotom sets) it's because they are built for the mainland European gauge. It means that, unlike the Alstom sets which can run on most UK mainlines, the Siemens trains are restricted to HS2. I noticed that as you arrived into Brussels Midi you could see one of the ex-Alstom Eurostar sets (green and white livery) which is on loan to IZY (Thalys' budget Paris-Brussels service). Thanks for a most interesting report.

    Hi Noel, you should have gone off at Rotterdam and take the train to Schiphol Airport from there: it is faster (and maybe even cheaper). The connecting train leaves just a couple of minutes after the Eurostar from the same platform and it runs every 15 minutes (except for Sunday I think).
    The reason Eurostar doesn't call at Schiphol Airport is because there is no space for a special platform which can be locked off and where passengers are only allowed access after going through customs. Amsterdam (platform 15) and Rotterdam (platform 1) do have such facilities.

    Hi Noel, the Eurostar that I took on 22nd June 2019 between London and Brussels Midl, did touch 319 kmph or around 199/200 mph after it crossed to France, but I remember it travelling at 199/200 kmph or around 124/125 mph within England till (probably) Dover and its speed does increase even when it is under the Chunnel, I think it is allowed to cross or touch 320 kmph only during its run within France and also probably in Belgium and the Netherlands. I thought you mentioned that Eurostar does 186 mph in England (too!), which I think is not the case. Later, on 25th June I came back by flight from Zurich to London and the next day, I took the Virgin from London (Euston-??) to Liverpool (the station near Albert Docks, yes, it's the) Lime St. railway station, to visit Anfield and buy LFC merchandise and came back the same day. Those Virgins did 199/200 kmph, which I reckon is the max. speed at which fast Inter-city/country trains are allowed to travel in England, including the Eurostar and SNCFs. Am I right?
