PO Box vs Virtual Mailbox - Why you might want one and how to get one!

- If you’re watching this video, you’re probably thinking about creating some privacy boundaries between your household and your small business.
Recently I signed up for a virtual mailbox for privacy and security purposes and today I wanted to talk to you all about the benefits of getting a virtual mailbox over a more traditional PO box or even using your home address for your online shop, which is something I’ve done for many years, but as I’ll explain in a little bit, I wish I had been using a virtual mailbox sooner.
So what exactly is a virtual mailbox? It’s a service that offers a real permanent street address, different from your personal home address, that you do not have to physically go to retrieve mail. The service digitizes all the mail going to that address and provides it to you virtually, so you can access it no matter where you are.

is the virtual mailbox just for letters or also items like clothes?
I just wanted to let you know that PO Boxes (most, anyway) come with physical street addresses now ("Street Addressing"). You use the post office's address, and add your PO Box number as a #xxxx or Unit xxxx, kinda like you'd do for an apartment address. So, that's another option if you still want the physical PO Box, but want a street address.

Do you register to the city of the virtual business address? My home would be workplace but virtual mailbox is 30 min. Away , so do I sue that asters to register with the city.
I’ve actually had a PO Box the whole time I transitioned from hobby to biz, but it’s a pain to get to and can’t be used in many circumstances, as you mentioned. I’m actually thinking about an alternative since moving and this video was timely, as I had no idea this was even a thing. Thanks!

Sounds like some strong privacy concerns in this day and age to have someone else going through your mail to digitize it. And even if they're up to snuff on strong privacy policies(with employees following them), there's also the concern of possible hacks and stolen data.
There's still always the possibility that's why we always need to be careful. Conduct research thoroughly before choosing a platform/app/software to work with.

You can have them throw away all obvious junk mail, and forward the remainder unopened. This way they don’t see any of your info, and you only have to have one business with your home address, or have them relay it to another mail service like a PO Box, so not even they have your home address.

Virtual Mail Box isn't all that private if someone is going to open up your mail and scan the documents. But it beats the heck out sending any documents to your home addressed if you want your privacy.

When I started my business I automatically got a PO box. I use UPS and get the yearly price. It's good because its a physical address and I just use unit number.
I don't need my customers knowing where I live lol.

You can use the post office's physical address when addressing your box. Never had an issue getting packages.

So with Virtuall Mailbox what happens when someone sends back a Physical Product? Like a return?
Hi! You will get a list of items that come to your virtual mailbox and you will be asked if you want them forwarded to your actual address. You can also double check/verify the process on returns with your chosen Virtual Mailbox provider's Customer Support. Hope this helps! 😊

Could you use this option for care registrations, or other legal things like insurance requiring a physical address for people that are car, van, rv dwellers?

My main reason for wanting a PO box is to have it as a return address on my etsy items. Can virtual mailboxes have physical items returned to them?
Hi Shawna! You can also use a Virtual Mailbox address as a return address and once they receive an item, you may request to have it forwarded to your preferred forwarding address. Just make sure to choose one with package forwarding.
What about if you wanted to pick up the mail, would you be able to do that? Also would you able to receive actual packages if they were scanned?
You tell the service what you want them to forward to your actual address, but you don't actually go to the location.

Hi Ehren! If you aren't comfortable giving your home address, then a vitrual mailbox is the perfect service! Just make sure the one you choose has package forwarding.

Yes, the virtual mailbox is like a staffed office where the mail goes. They contact you when mail comes in and asks you if you want it forwarded on to you, trashed, etc. But you do not go there to mail things out.

I'm moving but 3 hours away from but it it only temporary for 6 months because i don't want to give businesses yet my real address because I have to transfer stuff but it's just temporary so it doesn't make sense to transfer all my information when I will move again. Also, I did research and I heard virtual mail can have hidden fees for scanning mail and shredding and I want to know which one is less costly because.i know with po box it's one time payment until your date end depends on which months u choose and virtual is a monthly fee verse PO Box.

Do you use your virtual address for anything other than for widely visible places (bottom of emails, website for returns, etc), and opt for your personal address for more "official" things? For instance, I set up a bank account for my business, and it asked for the business address. I don't have a virtual address set up yet so I used my personal - is this something I'll need to change later or is it okay to leave?
That decision is up to you. Typically a virtual mailbox address is used in pubic places where you don't want your actual mailing address to be seen. For bank paperwork, you probably want that to be mailed to your home.

Yes. It would be sent to the virtual mailbox and then you could decide to have the package forwarded back to you or not.

It can be. You mail would go to an office and someone would email what's in it for you and then you can tell them if you want them to trash it or forward it on to you.

You can use your Etsy shop name if you wish.

Great vid! say I want to ship packages with virtual address, but I want to use pick up services from a ups carrier, that virtual address could be used on my shipping label even though I want the package to be picked up from my personal home address? Or would I have to send it to the virtual address location first and have them ship it out for me?
The virtual address doesn't send out packages (though they will send them to YOU as part of the service), but you can use whatever return address you want on your labels and schedule your pickup for your home address.

No. A virtual mailbox is typically used for online address purposes, like putting on your webpage so that an actual address isn't showing. But this is not for accepting deliveries, especially large ones.

Very unfortunately all home business soap and cosmetic makers (also cottage food people) must by law use their home address. It’s very unsafe and scary. It’s one reason I’ve been hesitant to open my online store. Why the government demands this I’ll never understand.

If someone wants to send you fresh flowers can you provide them with the digital address?
This doesn't really work for something like that. It's simply an office building where they take in mail and then you decide if you want them to destroy it or send it on to you. They wouldn't have the capacity for getting fresh flowers to you.

Hi Alex! Are you asking if someone wants to send something to you? If so, aside from PO box, if you don't want to provide them with your address, you can also use a virtual mailbox to receive the items. Just make sure to choose one with package forwarding.

I’ve been trying to do some exploring as far as a virtual address corporation that also works with building business credit. I’ve heard Ipostal1 is not business oriented anymore and I’ve tried anytime mailbox and also another company called earth mailbox. So my question is, if I"m shipping my product to a customer, would I go to usps to ship to the virtual mailbox FIRST and then from there have the virtual mailbox forward the item to the customer?

The virtual mailbox is for you to receive mail. To send mail internationally you would still need to send through your local post office.

A: All of our addresses can be used for personal or business use. Online business listings will accept our street addresses but might not accept post office boxes.

How safe is a virtual mailbox?
As safe as using any other business service. Always check reviews, but virtual mailboxes are becoming THE thing.
Sure your credit cards, bank, social security numbers would be read by people who virtualmail could use your credit cards. I check the price of virtualbox is not cheap. It gives you 10 mail for basic price. If you get more mail, then you pay more. WHy don't you talk about it?
Hi Somjai! Thank you for your comment. With Virtual Mailboxes, mails are not opened, etc. without your permission. For bank, personal and other important stuffs, you probably want that to be mailed to your home.
Anyone recommend an online post box, I see a few online and I don’t want to get a fake one.

Hi! Yes. With a virtual mailbox, there's a person that will open your mail for you but not without your permission. Mail items will not be opened and there will be no actions performed for them unless you have sent an action request. 😊

You can use the virtual mailbox address in your return address if you want to. If the package is returned it will go to the VM instead of your house, and then the VM service will process it for you. But you can't physically go to the VM to mail packages.
Tbh this isn’t necessary, if you use squarepace, it already comes with domain privacy at no extra charge !! :)
This is if you have someone sending you a physical product, and if you have an email newsletter you have to put a physical address on your mailings.
