  • Deep in the darkness of a mythical cave feared by ancient cultures, there is no light to guide us. Instead, we'll use a LIDAR scanner to paint impressions of the chambers around us as an alternative to sight. However, the device isn't perfect, and sometimes, it shows us things that are hard to explain.

    Spoilers below!
    If you're thorough enough with scanning the area around the tent in the beginning, you can actually find the corpse of your character. It's only a really subtle silhuette, but what's really brilliant is that you can start a new game with all the upgrades for your LIDAR and then switch to "material mode" in order to make it really obvious.

    This idea is so cool: after you've scanned a large amount of space, you can see it. You know what was there but it's actually wrong, you know what WAS there, not what is currently there. You get this perfect sense of security that's not true. Such a good concept.

      Same here, i'm not sure why people are complaining so much about the story. • @TimSlee1
      @TimSlee1 Рік тому +6

      Yeah, those elements show the true scale, depth and history of the place while leaving a bit to the imagination. How it was re-discovered by miners and how those sacrificed by the ancient cult became stuck down there like your character. • @TheOneGuy1111
      @TheOneGuy1111 Рік тому +7

      @@TimSlee1 Of course it's not too convoluted, it's the opposite problem: It's too bare bones. Take the cult, for instance: All we learn is that there's a cult that did sacrifices, nothing more. You can say that this is to leave the rest up to your imagination, but there's barely anything there to base any theories off of; "a cult performing sacrifices" is about as generic as worldbuilding can get.
      Now don't gt me wrong, I don't think it's a bad game because of this, I'm just pointing out that there is legitimate reason to be critical.

    There was a story about the uneffable, presumably by Lovecraft but it may have been by someone else, where a man goes on an exploration into a structure in the desert that goes far underground. He had nothing with him but a torch and at some point early on it goes out. This leaves him to grope around in the dark but rather than turning back he continued on into what is assumed to be an ancient temple of some sort. At some point he gained some strange ability to see what was around him but not with his eyes (it's weird). This reminds me of that.

    • @BananaWisp
      @BananaWisp 2 роки тому +84

      I figure the thing in the water was probably another trapped soul like the protagonist, likely from one or many of the drowned/tortured witch trial victims. There's a lot of suffering in the cave and at the end the screech just points to them being the same, tormented sort of spirit. Older souls or ones that experienced great pain might be a little more vengeful/territorial than others, I suppose? Lashing out at anything they can perceive.
      Near the start of the game with the tent if explored carefully, you can find a body- probably the player's. No obvious clues to what happened but could be a ton of thing. Heart attack, slip and hit their head on a rock, etc. Like the protagonist muses, they do not remember How they died, and we never get an answer to that.

    Hey Librarian, if you ever go deep through your comments and read through this.
    1 - Hi :]
    2 - You're really a turn to the content I see, I have to thank you for that. Though it may be weird to thank someone for their common nature. You're still a definite difference compared to every other creator on UA-cam. You know how to describe everything, you take your time when you know to take your time but you always seem to have a genuine reaction to things.
    Even when it's something that scares you the same way the same times, this game is also different just as you said. It gives you a genuine fear of what you can't see till something that only gives you an object without definition scares you. But without the knowledge of it having a mind, where it's conscience is, and what it wants to do to you.
    All in all, it's strange, and you take to your channel and your mind so much different than to what every other creator does. Thank You for being an amazing creator Librarian.

    I think one of the scariest things about this game is when you think about the fact that the main character is in complete darkness at all times and can only see what is scanned by the lidar it makes you wonder if theres been any light around you from someone possibly following you or someone near you and you would never know or be able to see it.

    well that's one hell of an emotional rollercoaster. the excitement of lidar followed by terror, but quickly overshadowed by pure awe with an ending making it one of the saddest stories to have ever been put in an indie game.

    I also really love this game because it is a great example for good pacing in games.
    [SPOILERS]
    You have the creepy experiences, then moments to breathe and relax, bits of dialog to assuage your fear with the first talk of "glitches" then the water areas with the witch ghosts, followed by the calm, beautiful boat ride to put you at ease again before things get weird again or creepy.
    I do have to wonder how he got the boat down from the mine area though, since he had to have been the one to put it there, just like he was the one who set up the laser tripods as well. That's a lot of gear to bring with you.

    I went into this thinking it was a pure exploration game with a new style, found it through the Lidar mod which honestly got more attention than it deserved compared to this piece of art. The ending will echo inside me for a while, it is really haunting.
    This game is beautful in its own way, a hidden gem, i cannot comprehend why it didn't get any more attention than it did, the only reason i can see is overpricing.

      @danse en rouge Apparently it has to do with the difference in what he sees, versus how it records. From his perspective in 4K is appeared as nothing more than terrain, and he only noticed them in editing. (By the way, I know this because of a reply the Librarian himself made to another commenter.)

In-game it looked no different from the regular terrain gaps I was seeing everywhere, and I wasn't able to see them until the edit. You can see this effect in games with low-res text as well, where I'm not able to read it, but it looks clear on the video."

  • @Yveldi
    @Yveldi 2 роки тому +8

    Spoilers below.
    I think the story could not have been better for the mechanics. At the start, you know very little, and your tools also don't let you understand your surroundings much. By the end of it, your scanner is much stronger but you still have to scan your surroundings to understand them. Similarly, a lot is revealed, but some critical information is still left for you to realize (such as the fact that we have been going backwards this entire time). One thing this game also does amazingly is foreshadowing: There was pieces of it literally everywhere. Your character initially stated that he was the first to come this deep, yet he didn't seem to have any comments on other LIDAR equipment scattered all over the place. He also stated that some poor souls who died down there were left to relive their deaths over and over again. With hindsight, there were so many instances of foreshadowing, yet it was all executed so perfectly that most players wouldn't be able to predict it until the very end, and those who do would not be sure until the end either.
    This might be one of the best examples of game mechanics being used to enhance how the story lands by affecting the subconscious. It is so good.

I want to see so much more of this but I know my computer couldn't possibly handle it. It's just so gorgeous you could stay completely silent and the game would still completely enthrall me. This might be the first and only time that has happened in one of your videos, a true credit to the game design than an indictment of your stellar commentary.

    Interesting how we take the sounds a little differently: you said the burst scan recharging made you think of the sound indicator the scanner might have for low battery, but I was actually thinking of it as a reassuring little reminder that everything’s working. I really like how beepy the scanner is, it adds something to the experience of using it: at the same time the lasers pierce the darkness, the beeps break up the deafening silence.

    It's a beautiful metaphor, when you leave this life behind, you're the only person who can see the journey you travelled, the choices you made and the thoughts you had. All that is left is tiny dots that make up peoples' perception of you.
    I truly hope everyone that reads this will have someone make an effort to see as much of their life as possible, to share all that you are with, that at the end, someone can look into that pool and see a glimpse of that journey and those hardships and the perils you faced and overcame at every turn, that it all means something in the end
