"Probably the most difficult car in iRacing to drive fast." And my genius here bought it as the second car on iRacing... With little competitive racing experience before. As I said: genius!
Lol, I just made same mistake as you xDDDD
I bought it as soon as I possibly could also lol. I was not too happy after trying to drive it an realizing it refuses to turn if you don't brake exactly right into the corner. Just forces me to try an perfect my technique though
Long Beach, this past week, was a perfect track to learn aggressive braking, and trail breaking in the Porsche. You cannot get around that track without trail braking. Plus with the bumps it really is a good place to learn on. It can get frustrating if you are new to iRacing, or the Porsche, but the rewards for getting it right make you feel like you have accomplished something, imo.
Long Beach in the Porsche was glorious. So much fun, so rewarding...
@@fermillo65 Too many idiots for me to enjoy the races I ran sadly.
after copying your awesome attitude towards racing and maxing out my A license (oh yes A4.99), i am now trying to get some pace into my game. thanks dave for making us better drivers!
Well done buddy, no mean feat getting to 4.99! 😁
I absolutely LOVE the idea of using drills to hone fine skills like this. I do it in almost every other activity and especially games.
Trying to learn this while hot lapping is really difficult. Breaking it down into an activity where you can repetitively apply the technique is awesome.
I did some similar stuff in the MX-5 when I first started but this shows how useful it can be for learning new cars.
First time I have ever seen anyone connected with Sim racing providing drills for a technique. Excellent
I have purchased this car but have not driven it yet, so I’m glad I saw this before I take it out on track. Probably saved me from scrapping it
I'm still in the MX5 in Rookies, but this was super useful. Highly recommend.
I’m a C class noob mate I feel the same way XD
Oh baby some training offered by the man himself! I can already feel the seconds I’m shaving from my time! Can this be applied into other cars/series’ by chance?
Absolutely. Exactly the same principles for all cars 👍
Trail braking really does help in the Porsche. I started using it and noticed right away how much more settled the car felt and how much tighter I could turn. And it was easier to hold a steady line through longer turns. Great video, Dave. Thanks and Cheers!
Love the Cup Car. I committed to learning how to drive it a couple seasons ago. Started the season with a 1440 iRating. Ended with an 809. LOL I really do love the car, just wish it wasn't always trying to kill me
Love this type of video Dave. You should do more! Always watch your videos and try and learn how you take corners so fast, or dodge oncoming incidents, when to push etc. Nice to have the explainer.
Feeling pretty dizzy after that first trail braking drill lol
Long Beach this week has been a disaster. Last night I didn't make it across the start line due to what could only be described as wreckfest carnage
Thank you for the video Dave. I've been iRacing for about 6 months, and never understood the Porsches. I tried driving them and couldn't make half a lap. Sure, I've heard of trail braking, but after a few months I have enough experience to start understanding what folks are talking about.
I practiced your drills for a few minutes then took the Porsche cup car out on the nurb grand prix circuit. What do you know, I could control it, and managed to even complete a lap without an off after a few times around! Then I decided to press my luck and take the 718 Cayman for a spin around mid-ohio (not my favorite track either). Whoa brother... Now I get it. I managed a 1:31.4 after about a dozen laps. Nothing impressive really, but not super embarassing either (1200iR). AND I started anticipating where the limit was and caught the car a few times. There is a lot more to learn, but now I can start the journey. Keep putting out the great videos.
Awesome mate, you got it now. Just keep practicing and you'll be fine 😁
I'll have to try these drills for some of the other cars I own. Simple instructions to follow for the drills, shows how the car will handle, and easily replicable which I really like.
Nice tutorial and good explanation. Maybe this could turn into a series on driving techniques for the month.
Nice one thanks Dave! Using the skid pad is a great way of showing how trail braking works
Brilliant, I made the decision on Sunday to buy the car and start doing the 911 Cup.......and this comes out!!! Awesome content, thanks, can’t wait to start practicing tonight! Cheers
Interesting and informative. You make a good teacher Dave.
Thank you, Dave
Thanks, Dave! I’d love to see more tips and tricks videos!
Some say there is nothing he does not know or teach
Yet another great video to help us non Aliens to do our best, Thanks Dave👍🏻
I needed this video so badly. I’ve just started in the porsche. My DD1 is coming this week I can’t wait. I used your link too!
Scott Moakes referenced this video in his latest Porsche tips video, the two work well together thank you both 🙏
very nice Dave , everyone should practise this no matter the car !
Hands up for who got dizzy after watching this video 🤣✋🏽
Thanks Dave! This is going to the useful simracing videos list!
I just started driving the Cayman GT4, I think I'll apply these drills in the same manner; tricky car for me to figure out. Thanks Dave!
You can learn trail braking in a simulator by braking later and later and engaging your survival instinct, pumping the brakes to make the apex, eventually you'll smooth it out and just release the brakes in a few little steps or twitches off and on. Ultimately your braking plot should look about like the lower leg of a sine curve.
Aha!
Makes a lot of sense when you watch the video.
Keep them coming Dave I'm like a dry sponge ready to soak up the knowledge. ;-)
Dave honestly your are the best, your explanations are spot on and your pointers are truly working once I try them, Unlike lots of other racing guides. Cheers!
More videos like this please Dave.
i just recently got this car and its a blast, im not great in it yet but its lots of fun , real driver car :)
This doesn’t come at a better time! Trying to qualify for the Porsche Canada series and trying to cut the fat off my overall lap time. Thanks Dave!
Great video Dave I love the Porsche 911 great video on the Porsche thank you
Brilliant Dave!!....and just what I asked for...Thanks Dude!!
Thanks for posting this! Great information! Has anyone ever told you that you sound a bit like John Watson? Good stuff, thanks again!
Who's John Watson? 😁
@@davecamyt The F1 presenter from back in the early 1990's, he used to do commentary for ESPN2 F1 broadcasts here in the US, also former F1 driver from the late '70's through the mid' 80's...
13:54 - 'in the real world...' :D
Thanks Dave!! This really helps!!
Tips for the cup, instalike! Thx!
Great demonstration Dave!
Awesome! I'm on it Dave!
Great video! Would like to see more like this with other cars
Slip Angles !
What genius suggested that 🧐
Super interesting video and very helpful :) Thanks a lot for that Dave.
But in the first few minutes on the circular track I felt really sick from watching :D
Always love the content Dave. I am still early in my iRacing journey and eager to learn. I was wondering why neither you nor @MattMalone or @DanSuzuki ever compete in open wheels
I'm just not a fan of them tbh.
I like cars that move around a little. Maybe my old reactions are not good enough for all that down force 😁
Dave, I was surprised you weren't part of the PESC All Stars series this year. Any reason why? I think you'd have done very well give Dan and Emree a run for their money.
Just time. Unfortunately a lot of the dates clashed with work ☹️
@@davecamyt I thought this was what you did for a job! I don't honestly know how you create all the content with a regular job as well.
@@stbrown3rd haha, no I work full time. Don't get much down time 😁
Super useful video, and great idea to test it in the skid pad! I have been waiting to see a good brake bias video and you DID IT in my favorite car! THANKS!
A follow-up question (or video), what's your thoughts about adjusting break bias in lap during races, depending on the turn, traffic, car weight, tire wear, etc?
Great idea Dave could you do this for other classes please and thanks :)
Thanks Dave, good video, makes you start thinking about how your driving!! w.
Really informative Dave 👍🚗
So your Coach Dave I see all over ACC billboards? Nice 👍
Good video mate! top
Thanks Bruno 👍
I've been avoiding racing this car for too long. This is the push I needed to practice with it and perfectly timed as there's no other races of interest this week :) Thanks Dave
Nice video, thank you for taking the tima and effort to make it while keeping things simple. SInce this season, i'm starting to love this car, i even dare to do a race, wich endend up pretty awesome (long beach), if only i hadn't lost it twice at the airpin... Problem is, i run baseline setup and i love it, but i fel it lacks competitivity. I used to have PDS but i cancelled it, not worth the money as the setups are weird at least. People all lost it and ended up destroying and retiring their cars, so i did gain irating :D . Well, i might try to find an advance setup and stick to it...
Try Virtual Racing School. The tutorial videos and the telemetry tools are miles ahead of PDS.
Trail in, Slip out :D
i hear with the porche you use power in the corner to prevent the back end from coming around
Can you do this with other cars like VRS cars? Always good stuff to learn or even remember. Keep the good content Dave!
Yes, absolutely you can in the VRS cars. If you really want to see how much difference trail braking makes, try it out with the Mazda MX5, it is very rewarding when you get it right.
@@marcusdutton1808 I'm sorry, i expressed myself in the wrong way. I wanted to say other videos with each car and it's own flaws and goods. Especially the VRS cars because i few like each one has especific caracteristics and would be good to know them, being driver or the guy behind it
“The most difficult car to drive fast on iRacing”
SRF: Hold My Beer
Shelby Cobra in Project Cars and Assetto Corsa is quite the experience.
@@eversharpaudio8757 they are not iracing
@@TheDjOfChoice yes I know, it's just a crazy car to drive. I guess my comment was a little unnecessary just it came to mind.
@@eversharpaudio8757 I liked it haha. The cobra is mental, spins in pretty much every gear
Where can I get that pedal/steering input display with the line plot that's next to Dave's camera view? I've been looking all over but I guess I just can't figure out what's it called to find it.
It's part of the Racelabs overlay 👍
@@davecamyt Thank you Dave!
thanks Dave. very helpful. have learnt lots from your vids.. a question. is there an optimal tyre temp. ?
I can confirm that using these 3 weird tricks, although I did not improve on the Porsche, I did shave my head and adopt a northern accent. Which is the next best thing.
Honing your skills or turning yourself into a god like creature.....either is good 😁
Enjoyed the video, nicely explained and demonstrated. :D
what `s this course called in the beginning...need that too
It's a bit like counter steering with the motorcycle 😄
Yep. Think of the brake as the inside bar 😁
Where is this skid pad
OK WHERE is this test track? Is it gone now?
It's the Centripetal Circuit and still there 😁
This is a track in iRacing? Did not know there was a skid pad
Yes. It's called Centripetal circuit 👍
Awesome video Dave. Just curious how far you seat from you monitors? I’m starting to think I’m to far and I should probably move my monitor closer to me .
My eyes are around 63cm from the screen 👍
The closer your screen is, the more FoV you can have (if youre setting it right) :)
@@davecamyt ah ok i was I 86cm went to 60cm and is way better. Thank you so much. Should be 1sec faster now we’ll I hope 🤣
Skidpad? This is news to me. Where is it?
Centripedal Circuit.
Hi Dave ..i like your Videos! Can you give me a Link to the gloves you use? Thank you. Regards René from Germany
Hey buddy. I got them from IMB Racewear here in the UK 👍
13:06 : Just apply the accelerator a little bit more aggressively
*Floors it
Did you make this video for Jimmy? Lol
Just started out with IRacing... where is this track as I cant find it?
Centripedal Circuit. One of the free ones.
Why didn’t you do the all stars race?
Work clashed with quite a few of the dates. A one off is ok, but couldn't commit to so many rounds. Same reason I've never done any league racing ☹️
What would you recommend to be the best gt3 car?
Hi Dave, appears you have your brake limit maxed out around 80%. is there a way to manipulate that in iracing or is it pedal software?
I don't use any 'hacks' at all. The only thing that controls the pressure is my foot 😁
@@davecamyt Thanks Dave, unbelievable foot pressure control. Wish I could accomplish the same. I struggle being consistent with my pressure lap after lap.
The really stiff Heusinkveld Ultimates helps. I'd really have to push super hard to get 100% 👍
If Dave thinks the Porsche is the hardest to drive in Iracing, he has obviously forgotten about the V8 Supercars.
Yep, the V8 is tricky, but not as tricky as the cup car 😁
That was fun though at Le Mans 👍🏻
@@davecamyt The cup car has far more traction than the V8. The like of Emily Jones has said the V8s are harder.
I guess it’s all preference. I’d love for you to join us on an official v8 supercar race on a Monday night (9:15pm AEST time) It’s a SOF night for us so all the big boys come out to play so be interesting to see how tricky you will find the V8 against 4-5K Irating.
what's the name of the track? thx
This is the Centripetal circuit on iRacing 👍
is the Porsche cup a good series to do to improve your road course racing
It certainly improved overall car control without doubt 👍
I see you weren't impressed by the latest all-star race !
Yeah, the whole toxic chat wars made me pleased I'm not in it 😳
So what you're doing here in the first tip in race sitation will be, smash brakes then hold them a bit while entering the corner? I still not get the concept of trail braking, being a formula based driver
No. You apply the brakes progressively to threshold, not smash them, then as the front loads up and you are turning in, ease off the brakes progressively to your target speed (trail them off - hence the name) and to keep the weight balance forward right up to the apex and allow the front to be able to steer/grip. You can also coast the last bit after trailbraking if you don't want/need to lose more speed. After the apex you apply throttle to induce slip and rotate further into the exit, where you straighten up and increase throttle progressively to dig the rears in with that engine weight too and power out of the corner.
With little downforce in this type of car, it's all about weight balance throughout the corners to keep the grip where it's needed, unlike a downforce car where its about keeping that airflow up and driving to the limit of the grip/downforce. You also need incredibly smooth inputs.
You also have to be cautious with the Porsche not to induce “ lift off oversteer “. This occurs when you aggressively lift off the accelerator and the car oversteers. A way to help remedy this, is to keep applying gentle amounts of throttle before the apex of the corner, and utilizing the skills that Dave just showed us. The Porsche really requires 2 footed driving all the time! And as someone else mentioned, as fuel loads decrease during a race, the front end of the car becomes even lighter (front fuel tank) which can cause even more pronounced loss of steering inputs. I tend to over-fuel the Porsche for Sprint races in ACC, and I’d imagine iRacing would be exactly the same. This allows you to maintain using similar brake biases throughout the race, and more predictable handling as well.
Hi Dave are you using the sprints or ultimates he pedals?....which are making u faster?
I use Ultimates. I've had them for almost 3 years and love them 👍
Probaly?! there's no probaly🤣
im runnning stock g29 pedals im struggling to get the braking right how much difference would load cell pedals make as im in 2 minds to upgrade my wheel or pedals first
Pedals first every time 👍
Is this applicable with the 911 RSR? Trying to get a handle on the car especially as its in 2 series unlike the BMW M8
The principles are the same for every car 👍
@@davecamyt Cheers. Practice needed plus pedal upgrade lol
Truly the Dark Souls of iRacing
Keep in mind that when doing long races the weight of the car changes because you use fuel, brake bias 46% might be good in the beginning but maybe needs adjustment on the last few laps for example.
Yep, good point but didn't want to muddy the waters 👍
@@davecamyt I was wondering on this... do you increase BB as you burn fuel or decrease it?
@@robcawood You'll want to decrease it. The fuel tank is just ahead of the windscreen so, as the fuel is depleted, the front of the car gets lighter and it will have less grip as a result. You should shift the bias rearward to prevent the front brakes from locking with the lesser grip on the tyres during cornering from the lightened front end.
You only need to do a click or two once you notice that threshold braking is lower to bring that back to a normal response. Too much and you can lock the rears and cause the engine weight to rotate round on you.
@@Deadmode Thanks heaps!
@@Deadmode but do they really model these sims to that level? I'm curious
Load cell braking helps tremendously with trail braking.
If you are using a load cell brake pedal set the 'Brake Force Factor' to zero!
Thanks for the tip I will try that tomorrow 👍🏻🏎
Another of Dave’s videos covers this, and a few other things. It’s titled “6 things all those NEW to iRacing should do! | All FREE!”
very cool video and this is my favorite car in the iracing, but, it has been very difficult to improve my performance in my T500, some tracks are torture with it
Great work again Dave. Really helped my understanding. Especially on my problems on corner exit. I wish you would do more of these. I benefited a lot from you instruction video from Spa about using all of the track.
I know this is old, but blipping the throttle is required for downshifting this car? Idk why I thought it had a dog box and auto blipped for me lol you have taught me so well, Dave! I have my first IRL road rally with my WRX this Saturday and most things I’ve learned have been from you! Cheers, Dave! 👊🏽
In other words in whith the brake ,out with the gaz
Awesome help for porsche 911. Have you ever driven the Ruf gt3 car? If so, could you please give me some help with how to drive that car? I spin out almost every corner. Thanx in advance. Greetz Walter
I put a little deadzone in my paddle to be able to rest the foot on the break. But struggle trailbreaking having the last few % on the break. I think I still apply too much break pressure and overrotate the car.
Now I wonder if I calibrate the brake paddle in a way that resting foot on it is like the 5% brake pressure or do you want to have applied when getting to the apex before getting in the power.
So basically the “positive” deazone.
So I don’t have to overthink but only rest my foot on the paddle.
Does that make sense ?
Super helpful Dave! Thanks so much for these drills. Hope you're well mate.
I should be brilliant at these drills. I go round and round in circles with my wife every day!!!
Do the car becames more reactive because it loads the tire or because you increase the braking coficient therefore giving grip back the to the tire?
What FFB settings will make the steering feel more smooth and weighty? DD1 user. I struggle mostly on bumpy or tighter tracks. Currently wheel feels very lumpy, even with irffb. Or is there a set up change that will help?
If you message me on discord I'll gladly send you a screenshot of my fanalabs settings for you to try 👍
Dave I'm no nube to racing games but find project cars 2 really frustrating as I struggle to keep up with other same class cars as they pull away from me very quick I manage me setup to the max of my ability which is quite good and even if they spin of they catch me up very easily. Tried to ask advise in games many times and no one is willing to give any pointers out this is the only game I really struggle with. I know there are fast people on here but I catch people through tricky parts but they just take on on the slightest straights
I'm playing on xbox one on the g920 wheel and a solid rig setup
Have you any community races planned?
Nothing planned, but I'll sort some soon 👍
