- "Tell me about a difficult situation or challenge you faced in a workplace"
By asking this question, employers are trying to see how you (A) take charge in handling a challenging situation, or (B) collaborate with your coworkers as a team to solve a conflict. They want to know if you have critical thinking and problem solving skill, how you approach the problem and the level of responsibility you take in challenging situations.
It is very important to make sure that you use an example that demonstrates your ability to handle difficult situation. So do not mention about when you elevated the responsibility. Rather, talk about times when you stepped up and took a leadership position by collaborating with your coworkers.
In order to construct effective story, use PAR model and follow the 3 steps.
1 Problem: Identify the problem. What was the issue?
2 Action: How did you and your coworkers analyzed the problem and took actions to solve the issue?
3 Result: What was the positive outcome in result of the action?
By following PAR model, you can frame your story well.

I hate this question I always make some shit up as I go, I don't believe you can prepare for an interview because you really don't know what they are going to ask you, you just have to answer your questions fast and they have to make sense
I hate this question so much sometimes you have to lie because it’s not even relavant to your work experience
Sean Brown sometimes you just got wing it, I do that too and usually works out 😂
@cindy song ... "usually works out" ... damn girl, how many jobs have you been through?
Pointless question. The only 2 things the interviewer really needs to know is a) can this person do the job I am looking to fill, and b) Will this person fit in to the current team/will I be able to work with them. I swear sometimes they just ask these to make themselves look clever.
@@chrishill44 not really pointless though. Part of the test of answering questions is, can you actually talk to the interviewer in a way that makes sense?
Waooo!!!
I was unable to think of a situation where I performed as a problem solver but while watching this video all of a sudden I remembered a situation where I solved a problem and played as an integral part of my team!
Thank you so much for this informative video!
1:09 Some jobs teach you that if a customer gives you a hard time, you notify the supervisor or manager to handle the situation.
exactly. where are these places that allow free thought?
Thats true; however, he is suggesting that you use a different example if you want to offer a strong response to this question :)
@@harrysmith747 whenever you are the face of the company/ business and there is no superior at hand to come and solve the conflict for you. Following instructions is correct!, but in the context of this scenario what do you know do when the script you have memorize can be follow to the nice outcome? how do you response under pressure, the answer needs to be sincere. This allow the other person to know that if you get hired, you may need a little couching on the aspect. In some jobs, people prefer to invest in people that may not be technically very skillful, if they can keep their cool in front of difficult patrons. other would select someone that is in the middle in both aspects because it fits better with the current environment in the workplace.
I think that would be the normal solution in a normal world.
State the Problem you were facing, how you took action, and the explain how you grew as a person and worker after the positive outcome.
All of these situations in these videos have never happened to me. Who are all these people doing proposals for clients and trying to be under budget? Most of us have just worked in call centers or fast food ..lol.. :(
I had this kind of competency based interview for a call center. This kind of interview is so stupid
Right?! I was asked this question for a Cashier position at Target, lol. We don't exactly have the type of job where we wine and dine clients, haha
I work in this area. It applies to business development and its nice to finally see one.
@@OCDTraci You don't see how this can apply to a cashier? Isn't it kind of obvious? Say there's a problem with the price of a product, and a customer gets angry, and you have to work it out. I mean, these conflicts happen in any workplace
My answer: I like to work on teams where I'm in charge and there are no other team members.
😂 😂 😆 🤣
But what if you never had to deal with any difficult situation at work involving other employees or at least just can not remember a time that you ever did; could you an incident out side of a previous job like at home with family members, or at least make up a fake up example then say what you would do if the situation ever came true at all?
AntiqueAngel44 you can say the situation never arose and then talk about if it did how you would handle it
You can create your own situation and then solve it by yourself
thank you so much for this informartion this is very useful specially for the ones who are not english native speaker and need to get ready to answer the questions, all the job speaker videos give great advises when it comes to get a job, I had an interview today and that was exactly the asked me

No one really invites their coworkers out to lunch this is a rarity
This comment makes me really sad. I love having lunch with my fellow staff!!
I see that you should ask questions to resolve the problem
I don't really like the answer. It should focus more on her achievement. Th only thing she did was brining them both in same room? Why wasn't it done before?
Also looks like a fake situation.
lol. You're an idiot Christian.
it has been very helpful!!

Hey would you help me in english learning????
THESE VIDEOS ARE GREAT! BUT THE ENTERVIEWER LOOKS HIGH AS A KITE.
How do you manage with your more experience coworker as there might to be possibility of ego crash
They should be aware about where they stand and where you stand, if he is older and much experienced than you, but their position is under yours, you just have to let them know who's the boss in a proper manner lol. I've been handling staffs older than me even have longer years of experience, yet I am the Manager, so theu jusy have to follow the rules.
very good
One time a band camp!
