Toscanini conducted very little of Stravinsky's music, not because he didn't like it but reportedly because he found it too difficult. He clearly admired Stravinsky and his work. I don't know if they ever met. He also conducted some excerpts from "The Firebird," which I've never heard. Amazingly, this recording was approved by Toscanini, who was very fussy about what RCA could release. The fidelity in this recording is quite good for 1940.
It's true, he would have found it a little alien and crucially not known exactly how it should be done. For a similar reason he stayed away from conducting Bach, despite admiring the music very much. It was from before his time and the subtle dynamics and feel was not clear from the score alone.
Stravinsky and Toscanini did know each other but were not friends. Toscanini conducted as well the Infernal Dance from The Firebird and Fireworks. He did not conduct Le Sacre.The La Scala Rossignol was not cancelled; Stravinsky himself conducted it after Toscanini withdraw "due to exhaustion" (or a lack of interest in performing it, just maybe.)This is the fastest Petrushka I have ever heard.
@MrTimber101 Toscani also conduct some parts of the Firebird. and they worked together at La Scala for the Rossignol (but Toscanini then became ill and the performance was canceled) Stravinsky recalled the episode in his autobiography.
Bellissimo ! Vera perla rara ! +++++
quelle précision cela sonne tout autrement qu'à l'habitude

Quite exciting.
Grazie!
he did Rites of Spring for RCA around '29, I've got the 78s - some sections sound like early free jazz
can you upload this recording? thanks.
He Stravinsky, of course, not Toscanini.
si, può darsi lo farò, è una registrazione dal vivo
Che cosa?
Non immaginavo che Toscanini apprezzasse la musica del russo

Apprezzava un po’ meno l’uomo e sopratutto il suo modo di dirigere.
