Is it possible to do a port forwarding in my core router & open some ports not from the Starlink router ?
Also my public IP given by Starlink is timed - out making it difficult to do a port forwarding
You covered the thing missing in every other instruction I've seen, how to get back into the app to set up bypass! Thx so much for that step, very helpful
Something to note, Starlink makes it very clear in their documentation that their hardware may not play nice with other routers. I had quite a bit of problems with Netgear routers, requiring me to reboot them several times a month to keep the connection up and stable. I have since switched to an AmpliFi (Ubiquiti) setup, and so far it's been A LOT better. I checked out your list, and I was using the nighthawk routers, and they were nothing but problematic with Starlink. I would steer clear of them IMO.
Thanks for the info. I have heard a lot of people recommend Ubiquiti, I will have to check them out.
@@DISHY_tech I order my STARLINK like 19 days ago
I live in OHIO USA east coast how long you think it will take me get my STARLINK ?
@@Lonnie_Smith Did you pre-order or place a full order?
@@DISHY_techgot my starlink but whenever I split 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ. My devices never detect the 5GHZ. I’ve an iPhone 13 Pro Max and Oneplus 10T. And also my pC they all support 5GHZ but they can never detect the starlink one. If I turn the split nehwork off, only my iPhone connects to the 5GHZ automatically but the other devices connects to 2.4GHZ. Any help?
My Starlink works well, but I have set to failover on my ASUS AC3400. Unfortunately using dual WAN balanced with Spectrum has made my Disney plus freak out... and my UA-cam. They kept thinking I was someone else as it load balanced. I guess they are not getting a lot of dual ISP customers yet.
I still can't believe they didn't put Ethernet ports on the starlink router. It's ridiculous.
I've got the same thing myself, only had it setup for a few days. Was testing downloads and ping and thankfully a friend at work had the ethernet port insert that I could borrow. Using it, ping issues were almost immediately fixed and downloads got about 5 times faster than using wifi. Far better internet than what I had before, so I'm ordering the ethernet port cable, but I'm still dumbfounded that it didn't just have an ethernet port on the modem to begin with.
WHY?
The main reason they dont put any lan ports is so that you can't resale the internet such as using it in piso wifi...it must be use as residential only not for business
@@ArielTulidRemix If that's their thinking it's pretty naive when you consider you could just buy a WiFi repeater that will take the WiFi signal, and from that create an ethernet network.
Plus i found out they have available adapter in there store that is costs so maybe another business strategy to add more income at 3k+ budget for that adapter
I split the bands but only my iPhone 13 Pro Max gets the 5GHZ and it struggles. Sometimes it does sometimes it doesn’t until I reboot my phone. Shockingly my Ps5 gets it all the time. Also when I use the default mode without splitting. My iPhone and ps5 always connects to 5GHZ BUT My gaming pC and my Oneplus 10T connect to 2.4ghz they never detect the 5GHZ. This isn’t the device issues Because I’ve connected 5GHZ Wi-Fi on both before.
Will an external router fix this issue? It’s very annoying
Simple, to the point, and covered everything I needed to know. Thanks.
I didn’t read through all comments but my advice is to bypass SL router first (after verifying your SL system is working properly) before plugging in your 3rd party router to the Ethernet adapter. This isn’t mentioned in this video. I followed the video instructions verbatim and after plugging in my router I could not access the SL router settings (in the app) in order to “enable bypass”. Got a message that it was “unreachable “. It was still broadcasting the SSID and still functioning as a access point and router but I could not drill into settings. SL support was able to do something on their end to allow me to finally access router the SL settings. From there I bypassed, plugged in my netgear router, rebooted the NG router and everything worked perfectly.
Thanks for the tip. Recap, bypass SL with app then plug in aftermarket router. Got it.
Checking back in because my TP Link router arrived today. I did what you said and bypassed SL first. No error messages everything went well. Thanks for people like you lending good info. Right on!
Do I have to have a direct straight line from the house to the barn to get wifi at the barn?
I just gave up. Resetted SL router to delete the bypass.
I don't have the Starlink kit yet, but I'm quite positive this would come in handy someday. Thanks for the quick education which was straight to the point. Cheers
You're welcome, thanks for the feedback!

I live in OHIO USA east coast how long you think it will take me get my STARLINK ?
@@Lonnie_SmithTook me 2 years to get mine, also US east but we ordered when it was backed up
I've been using starlink for about 6 months now. i had a few issues at first with a dodgy ethernet adapter, but fair play to starlink they sent out a complete new setup straightaway even though i only needed the ethernet adapter.
Im using a mercusys wifi6 mesh system and its performed brilliantly, i have had to reboot my starlink router a few times as it starts to drop speeds after being in bypass for a while
As has been explained more than once here:
Anything about PoE injectors is ALSO about using a Starlink Internet system where mains power is NOT available.
Where mains power IS AVAILABLE but another router is more suitable, it is far easier to simply buy the Starlink Ethernet adapter
THEN bypass the Starlink router and use your own router OR do NOT bypass the Starlink router and USE BOTH.
how would you use both?
@@jsnx9067 - Connect a second router to your Starlink via WiFi bridge mode without the need for an ethernet adapter, which lets you use both a the same time or just the second router depending on your needs.
@@jsnx9067or to use both with ethernet adapter (not wifi bridge mode) just configure two different subnets.
I have a question please , why would you want to use a different router other than Starlink’s provided router?
Because I have a very long cable running to an outbuilding.
It's got a very short range in between walls
Around 6 metres
Because some people want more range but that starlink router does not provide it
Adding a wireless router lets you add multiple items that require an Ethernet port
because some of us are sensitive to RF radiation and want to ONLY use Ethernet cables in out home.
Great content. And probably the only router config guide we need.
...So in 1993 I unplugged my Sega Genesis 6 times and can you guess what happened?? Aside from that marketing exec's bad call to save money everything is great including this video! Very helpful!
I'm sorry, what?
bro got an inside joke only he knows about
Waiting for the point to point tutorial 😊
"Unplug and replug 6 times in a row".... GM and Ford definitely had some ideas that SpaceX used. "Turn to aux and press start/stop button 35 times in a row, press brake then accelerator in sequence 4 times, press start/stop once, wait 15 seconds, press once again. You are now in service mode." lol
I follow this set up and for two months it works well, but now my TP Link slow down and internet connection is not stable. All wired gadgets that connected from TP Link Router are totally zero internet. So I decided to reset starlink router and not bypassing anymore. Now it works great. I also connect my tp link router to the ethernet adapter and all gadgets connected works well.
Same bro, my problem is, all my tp link router is have no internet when the ethernet cable from Starlink and connect to tp link router and connect to hub that connected to other tp link router, should i remove the bypass to have a stable internet?
@@keithdecena4478 you should. I already remove by pass and it works well.
Thx, I asked you last time for a stand alone system, with solar and battery for the Starlink. Where we stay we don't usually have electric power. What's the best-recommended solar and battery spec?
It would depend more on what else you are using on the electrical system. Starlink, when heating is off, will use around 20-50 watts. There are solar and battery calculators out there that will allow you to estimate power usage from all your devices, and then calculate the battery and solar size you would need.
@@DISHY_tech thanks for your reply. My concern is only to power the Starlink with the solar system.
Do you have a set up for it?
Successfully connected Starlink (Bypass Mode) to EERO Pro 6E Mesh Network with 12 AP's supporting 16 Ring Cameras, Ring Pro Alarm, 8 Motion Sensors and 36 Ecobee thermostats. Using this setup to monitor a office location that remains empty since the pandemic. Had to limit the number of T-stats, originally had 78 connected and they were flooding the network. Discovered that Ecobee's act as a repeater looking for sensors, tripling data broadcasting and knocking the AP's down. Long story short, current config works great on the Starlink Network (Priority 1TB Plan).
how was the speed after you bypass?
Do you have a video for creating a mesh system with starlink .. specifically to boost range to out buildings like a garage or outdoor entertainment space?
I can only speak for myself when I ordered mine. I bought two extra routers from Starlink end it extends for my whole property which is very remote, but they are all from Starlink.
Best way imo would be to use your own router with Starlink bypass mode and create your own mesh network with repeaters.
Thanks for the great video. I have just ordered my adapter in Canada for 50 dollars Canadian which includes taxes and shipping. Amazon wants 90 dollars for it.
The ones on Amazon are just 3rd party scalpers charging people more. It's cheaper from Starlink directly. Starlink.com is the only place Starlink sells their accessories.
on a side note: I found that I didn't have to enable bypass mode, after getting all connected on an older router that was already configured I could connect to the wifi on the old router and also on the wifi on the starlink router. I thought it was odd and wondered why everyone is bypassing the starlink router.
You can do that, but you are double NAT'ed with two routers running on the same network. People enable bypass so that their own router takes over DHCP and Wifi completely.
Can someone explain to me why I would not want to use the star link router and why I would want to use a different one? Thanks.
The starlink router is run purely on wifi so if your gaming and planning on using a hardwire for your pc, primarily concerns desktop pc, you would need a different router
So you can get faster internet, so you can add smart home devices like Philips hue, you can use better VPNs, so you don’t have to redo all your networking & passwords, and on & on & on & on… 😊
Will this get rid of the double nat
Curious as to what benefit that would be?
Hey Hi, it is recommended to do that? a mean, Is it possible to have better internet speeds or better coverage
with an external router?
Depends on the router you get, but a big reason would be to actually hard wire to it
2:40 to turn off bypass mode as per Starlink instructions that i have used many times you need to power cycle "unplug/plug" the SL gateway 3 times not 6.
According to Starlink instructions, it's 6 times, but they probably just say that to make sure there are enough cycles to reset it. I believe they used to say 3 in their instructions, so it probably still works with just 3 cycles.
the older modem was 3 the new one is 6
@Demetrios Christopher well, we are talking about the same man that when shown his first rocket, he said. " make the next one more pointier"
@@DISHY_tech - Imagine an intermittent power outage/brownout which cycles SL 3 or more times. Factory reset... oops. lol I think having a recessed reset button would have been a better solution. imo
very nice video. I went to your page talking about routers. So Im still learning. I live on an island in alaska. Love Starlink. Right now Im getting download speeds of mid 200' to 300. We only use the Apple TV which Im hardwired directly too. So am I to understand that an upgraded router will give me faster speeds? I do have a 2 story house with bedrooms below the room with the router. We have family come and visit. Would you recommend a mesh or will a powerful router suffice? of course I know that depends what the walls are made of, distance etc. any extra tips would be appreciated
No, a router won't necessarily give you faster internet speeds. An aftermarket router or mesh system is really only necessary if you have coverage weak spots. With the Starlink app, when you do a speed test, it gives you a "Wifi Speed" result. This is the speed between your phone and the router. If your Wifi coverage is weak, you'll notice this Wifi speed is very low, limiting the speed test. But if you are getting 200-300 mbps, that is very fast for Starlink, so coverage doesn't seem to be an issue.
Personally, I have a 1.5 story house and have no issues getting good Wifi coverage with just one router. Even the standard Starlink router did fine in that regard before going aftermarket.
The main reason to go aftermarket would be for the additional network configuration and security features that advanced users may want/need. The included router is great for 90% of people.
Hope that helps!
@@DISHY_tech very clear thank you!
You do know that only 5-10 Mbps is required to stream 1080p content smoothly, right? So with 200-300mpbs you could theoretically watch 40 to 60 1080p channels at once.
Clear instructions. Thank you!
Thank you for the feedback!
First, thank you for your clear and concise explanations visa/vi Starlink. What do U do for just plain wifi extenders? I have two tp-link RE300 that have been setup directly with the Starlink router. But I get no internet from them just great wi-fi signals! Should I used a router and setup the extenders with the router?
thanks! greetings from Ukraine
wow, i did not realise it was going to be that easy
Just what I was looking for. Only one question, will the port forwarding work after doing this procedure?
You typically need a public IPV4 address to forward ports, which Starlink Residential doesn't provide. You can upgrade to their Priority service plan to get a public IPV4 address, or use IPV6 instead.
Can you control all devices connected to your starlink?
secondly, can you use access point for wider range of internet connection and how to do the wiring?
Hi, thx for your video. Is it required to set the SL router to bypass mode? How can I set the dish to stow when I tavel with the RV? Because the app is no longer running without SL router, right?
If i enable bypass mode will the port forward rules work? Thanks
Very useful video. Thank you
Is it best to disable the Starlink Router or to put a mesh system in Access point mode? I assume this makes it easier for Starlink support but would appreciate feedback. Thanks.
I’m wondering the exact same thing, unsure which is the better option when it comes to internet speed and overall connection stability
Hi and thanks for your helpful SL videos. I am about to undertake your 12v conversion for using SL in our caravan travels and I note in this video that the replacement router is plugged into SL's ethernet adapter without changing the end fitting of the routers cable, that being so it seems likely that my dilemma of configuring the router has been solved. It is my intention to NOT USE the adapter and to modify the cable in the caravan for the 12v mod and I was unsure of how to configure the new router. A short comment most welcome.
This video covers bypassing the router in a traditional AC power scenario. For the 12V conversion, you'll need to do everything covered in that video, just with the cable directly and not with the Ethernet Adapter. Your aftermarket router will plug into the data port on the PoE injector. One end of the router Ethernet cable will need to be converted.
Message me asap I can help with your issue look up SpaceTek 12v-24v dishy
@@DISHY_tech Thanks for your very prompt reply, my main concern was how I might configure settings in a new router and I now understand that I could connect via the traditional 240V method, connect the new router to the SL ethernet adapter and adjust any settings before carrying out the router cable and power lead modifications for the 12v system and it will then be ready for connection in the modified power set up. I have two cables, one for domestic use plus a second for our caravan use. We are in Australia and are able to have a domestic system with portability unless Elon decides to make changes in the future!
Important question. Can you use both routers at the same time with no issues?
Also can mesh points be hooked up to it
You can, although it’s not ideal to have 2 routers on the same network. Mesh nodes can be hooked up in a wired configuration on the newest Gen 3 Starlink router (most aftermarket mesh systems as well) but not Gen 2.
There's something missing here. I keep seeing videos that suggest that the ethernet adapter just provides a plug and play connection to a device or another router. In my case, there is no internet being delivered thru the ethernet port. Can't even get internet to a computer connected via the ethernet cable. Does that mean I have a bad adapter? Or is there something else that has to be configured?
Have you removed the starlink router and plugged directly into your own router? If so it won't work because you need the original router to power the dish. Alternatively modify the cable to connect to a 48v poe injector!
Please include the same set up with the first GEN
What cable is the most recomended to use between de ethernet adapter and the router an UTP 5e or an UTP 6 ? is any difference using an UTP 6?

So now which router among the two data will be using
Has anyone noticed any difference on speeds when hooking it up this way? Does it still work properly and smooth?
Also I always owned netgear routers and being 2025 are their new router compatible for this particular set up. Would like to know before going out to buy one.

And please can I ask, I live in the UK but I want to buy the starlink in UK to be taken to Nigeria for use permanently.
Will it work directly in Nigeria considering that I bought and shipped it to my address in London?
No it won't work, unless you buy the Global Roam version. It's always best to buy it where you are going to use it.
there's an adapter that you can use to send the internet directly to your own router, so if anybody needs help, i also work mikrotik routers to manage Starlink services, so you can check all details about your traffic and more.
Can you help me with a question? Hopefully u see this. I work from home & have to log into my work VPN on my work issued Desktop. I also have to be hard wired to the modem by Ethernet. I just ordered the Ethernet adapter. I figured I just had to plug it all in & that’s it. I’ve heard Starlink doesn’t do VPNs tho. Is this true? Do I have to put it in bypass mode & if so, will the WiFi go out & wont be able to be used while in Bypass? I just want to be able to work & everyone else be able to watch TV or do whatever with the WiFi! What needs to be done if anything? TY!!
Great video thank you. Looking to get Wi-Fi in my metal shop that’s about 100 feet from my home. Was thinking of integrating the deco mesh system you recommend by bypassing the Starlink router. What I plan to do is put one of the mesh routers in the garage, run an Ethernet from that mesh, buried underground, to another mesh inside the shop. Think that would work? Thanks!
That would be the ideal solution. Hardwiring the nodes together will give you the best Wi-Fi performance.
Can I using for internet office. Around 25 unit pc?
I have been trying to use the ethernet adapter, I go to settings and when I go to bypass mode it has the message You must be online and logged in with the account associated with this Starlink to update settings. I have tried everything and can not get this cleared to let me access the by pass mode. Does anyone have any ideas as I have reset the starlink many times and still this nag comes up, Just got the dish on 8-22-23 after waithing 2 years.
Will you be able to use the Starlink App with the new router wlan? There are some functions that are vital for me like snow melting..
Did you get any response?
Thanks for the video! I already have my adapter adapter and plugged in my old mesh network connected to the Starlink router. I haven't set bypass yet, as I want to know how to access the starlink app after that... will it still work?
Yes, the Starlink app should still be accessible even in bypass mode. Some 3rd party routers may require a static route to be set back to the dish IP if you can't connect to the app. The blog post (link in description) has instructions for that.
Thank you for your input , just purchased Starlink roam for our RV. I have no light on the bottom of the router, I checked the plug and outlet for power. Plug is secured and confirmed outlet is hot , still no light. In your opinion do you think the new router is defective? TYIA.
I know it’s a year later but I now have this same problem.
Can I use Intermet switch in order to connect 2 PCs instead of another Wi-Fi?
Can you leave the Starlink router connected and also hook up an external router system?
Does the Starlink still does the UTP routing, in case I plug in the utp cable into a hub 1st?
Starlink utp --> hub -->hub utp ---> Router
Would the same scenario be possible without disabling the Starlink router? Having both Starlink and Tplink routers working?
Hello, could I use an wifi extender? I am asking this because I just found this video and not sure what it is suppose to do. Thanks.
Wifi extenders are an option, but most require a WPS button to get the network information from Starlink. The Starlink router doesn't have a the WPS feature to use with extenders. Make sure to get one with the ability to configure it from an app, so you can connect it to the Starlink Wifi that way.

Hi, is it possible to connect a Fritz Repeater (1160) to a Starlink Router (V2) so that the Range a bit better is?
Please i have a question, does it mean after the bypass the SL router won't work only the extended router?
This is great - thank you very much. I have a couple questions. I am working remotely in Mexico and I want/need to set-up a VPN as some sites I need access to do not like my Mexican IP address. The only way I can think of doing this is purchasing a router which will allow VPN's and do the starlink passthrough. I have bought 2 additional Starlink mesh routers to extend the signal in my concrete home - they work okay not great but I do have signal throughout my home. If I put the main starlink router in bypass will that disable the mesh routers from picking up signal and distributing throughout my home? Will the TP-Link 1750 work in Mexico? Thank you!
Yes, if you put the main Starlink router in bypass mode, the Starlink mesh nodes will no longer work. The easiest way to do a VPN would be to install the VPN client on each device that you want to connect with. For example, I use Private Internet Access on my laptop and phone. They have apps you download, and you just turn the VPN on and off on the device without having to mess with the router.
So I have to put it in Bypass mode (which turns off wifi) to use a second router? My current set up is a router from my ISP and a second one that has VPN on the router (run slower obviously). I'd like them both to work at the same time. Is this possible?
You havent mentioned if we still need to config the ip address of the tplink router using the starlink ip address
Thank you for the video and a chance to discuss this.
Can I manage user data limit on a 3rd party router? I need a setup that gives me for example 1GB for one users or generate codes to connect to my network with a known data limit
I will be adding my Google nest to the SL system; what do i need to know?
Exactly what I was looking for. Just added a 5G Router (FritzBox 6850 5G) in a US 5th wheel here in europe but experienced today that the 5G connection is quite bad where I‘m planning to set up my rig. So I thought I still can switch over to Starlink but don’t wanna loose the functionality on my FritzBox Router like SIP telephony with all the comfort functions, WireGuard VPN, strong WiFi6 and DECT base station. The only question I‘m still trying to get answered is if I get an external IP that’s reachable from the internet with starlink.
Only Business accounts get a publicly reachable IP from Starlink.
WireGuard is the shznit compared to regular VPN. Much faster and more reliable in my experience. ;)

Hi, openvpn TPLink works with starlink to access remotely?
Hi, with this set and by-pass mode, can I access my office VPN?
I understand the new StarLink router only has USB. Is there a way to run USB to the router or get a USB to Ethernet out adaptor?
could you please tell me why I would want to add an after market router?
I would like to know this also
What happens to the 2nd node I purchased from Starlink when I turn off the the primary router? Do you have any recommendations for WiFi boosters that you plug in .?
Hey thanks! I have a question. Once you enable bypass mode and your phone is connected to the 3rd party router, the starlink app functions still works? (speed test, etc)
Yes, you will still be able to access any dish functions and options via the app. Some of the router settings and pages will not be available because the router is in bypass.
@@DISHY_tech great, thanks!
Can I hook up through the ethernet cable AND still keep wifi in my home for other users?
Hi! will i be able to use LAN cables from my existing network once i connect the adapter?
Yes, you can plug any existing cables into either the adapter itself, or into the LAN ports on a 3rd party router.
does this mean we can use internet plans outside the starlink plan?
No
Can you use both of the router at the same time? Or just don't have it on Bypass Mode or wont work that way as well?
You can use both if you want. It's best to set the additional router in "access point" mode so that they both aren't acting as routers on the same network.
@@DISHY_tech Got it! Thank you!
Hello, I heard that if we connect the Starlink Internet to the router, the speed will decrease drastically. Is there a solution to increase the speed? Help me please
The bypass option does not show up any more in the menu!
how about mikrotik devices? it seems DHCP client right?
After that,Can we Add another Lan network on remaining 4 lan Ports?
Can I run BOTH WiFi's active?
Currently, our ISP is connected to my own Netgear Nighthawk. I have both the ISP's WiFi and Netgear WiFi. Will it be the same with Starlink, or MUST I disable the Starlink WiFi?
I have a range of Wyze Cams, Google Dot, etc., which I channel through the far-reaching Netgear WiFi.
Do you configure it as a PPPoE or dynamic DHCP connection to the new router?
I didn't do anything special, it's the base setup on the TP-Link router, and the only thing changed on the Starlink side is enabling bypass mode.
Hi Colby, how do you do this with the starlink business kit, where you have the option not to have the Starlinks wifi router connected at all? As on the business kit you can plug the Starlink PSU directly to a 3rd party router. Unsure how you can then use your Starlink app to go through all the settings
The Starlink app can still connect to the dish to access all relevant dish settings. With the business kit, you don't need bypass mode, just use your 3rd party router without the Starlink router plugged in at all. Once your phone is connected to the same network that your Starlink dish is on, the app will be able to connect and talk to the dish.
Planning on using the ethernet adapter to plug into a powercord device and generate a second, power outlet WiFi a few floors up. Will this require bypass mode as well?
No, you only need bypass if you want to disable the Starlink router. You won’t need to do that in your situation.
@@DISHY_tech Thanks, not only for answering so quickly, but also for having the best possible answer! 😁
What happens if I don't bypass will I essentially have a wifi repeater using the TP link like a extension to my network.
Will that work?
can i change the dhcp network?
Maybe a stupid question but asking anyway! So, when I add my new router can I keep the same SSID name and password that I already have set up for Starlink? That way I don't have to go and change all my devices already hooked up to the Starlink wifi.
should be able to
Without bypassing, both of them will be broadcasting wifi?
Am going to give this a try today. I have an Asus DSL-AC55U plus an Asus repeater going to a seperate tiny house. I believe any issues will be with the setup of the Asus router, which isn't straightforward. I've tried once before, and the issue I had is when I switch to the Asus router, I lose connectivity with Starlink and the app doesn't let me in to switch to bypass mode, so I had to switch to bypass mode before disconnecting Starlink. Any way around this? Thanks for the vid!
You might be auto-joining the Asus router. Connect up the Asus router, go into your phone settings, and make sure you are still connected to the Starlink Wifi in order to turn it on bypass mode. Once in bypass mode, go back and connect to the Asus Wifi network. If you still can't connect via the app or dishy.starlink.com, try going into the Asus settings and creating a static route to the dish IP address:
Network destination: 192.168.100.0
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.100.1
Interface: WAN
Can I go from ethernet adapter to switch and then 2 different routers/mashes because I have 2 houses one next to another.. is this possible?
Is there a way to just disable Wi-Fi on Starlink’s router and use Ethernet only to connect to devices you want internet on?
