- Whenever you’re giving someone a gift, do you take the time to really think about what they want? Turns out, that might not be ideal.

I'm giving my father a water boiler (the one he has is literally melting), my mother an electric iron (her curent one is a fire hazard) and my aunt a desk lamp (she likes to read at night but has no lamp). These are not what they want but what they need!
I hate anything that involves a gift. Christmas is by far my least favorite time of year because of the stress of gift giving. I just give each family member money. What annoys me is that is looked at as i didn't put much effort into the gift. I'd rather have an experience rather than something i really won't use.
So you admit you'd rather have an experience and a material gift, but instead of leading by example you just take the lazy route and give them money?
Do you see that problem here?
Travis Frazier your comment confuses me to be honest. What do you mean by my money? All i pretty much said was i'd rather have an experience over a gift. I'm not a materialistic person. I don't like buying gifts for people because it may not always be something they want or could use. I just give money because then they can buy what they want.
"stress of gift giving" sure soo much stress about that...
♥ I give the Homeless, and everyone what they really really want...♥
Christmas Decanters of Wild Turkey!!!!!
Man, you should see the hot tears of joy rolling down their dirty cheeks.
extreme1is1me
typo. It should have been "them"
And if you don't want them to think you are lazy then why don't you buy them an experience?
I don't really care much for gifts at all, I mean... I am grateful if someone have taken their time to actually buy a gift for me. But when it comes to stuff I want, I buy that myself, no matter what it is. Heck, I'm happy if someone gives me a card or a bar of chocolate for Christmas, doesn't have to be anything special.
Besides, I prefer NYE over Christmas ;)
And here I was giving away PS4's, Xbox Ones, Nikon/Canon Cameras, Wii U's, Nintendo 3D XL's, iPhones and Ipads to family members. Guess I'll have to rethink my gift-giving strategy. Thanks DNews. Personally, I love giving to my family and close friends than receive. I don't expect anything in return. Just enjoy seeing their faces lit up. Yeah, it's not about the amount spent or gifts themselves, I just enjoy this time of the year to reflect back on having my family and friends still healthy and with me.
Am I the only one that would rather get money, or tell the person exactly what I want?
*The best Christmas gifts I've received are; The Holy Bible (2013), and my pendant (2009). They were necessities in life, and they both meant something special to me for personal reasons. I guess if you wanna give someone a good gift, you have to figure out how it would benefit their lives.*
For a "material gift" that's also an "experiential gift" that "focuses on a person's current needs" and that "doesn't have to be shared with the gift-giver" - try chocolate.
"Experience" gifts are great! I have given theme park tickets, dance class tickets, and also homemade coupons for things like a trip to the zoo or museum ((to be redeemed at an undetermined date in the future). These gifts always go over well. The important part about these kinds of things is to pick something you know they will like. A shy person might not want free dance classes. An art class might not be a fun experience for a person who dislikes painting. Be open-ended, if possible. Using the dance studio as an example, it might be best to buy class tickets that can be used for any class at the studio, instead of the tickets being specifically for ballroom or hip hop classes.
My dad listened to music in the 60s and 70s, so I give him new albums from those bands today.
I gave my friend a gift before the school break began and when she received it she freaked out. She was amazed and happy. She actually showed it off to everyone. She got DIY sushi candy, a lollipop and cake earrings
there's something about his eyes... I cant figure it out though. I'm spooked.
His head is too small for his eyes, not that there's anything wrong with that.
He has non-classic facial ratios. Superficial people (IE people with lower intelligence) traditionally find this troubling as they have a hard time distinguishing between aesthetics and content.
Hope this helps.
ThePoptartster I'm actually intelligent. I'm just joking. Something about his eyes just seem off, gives me the heebie jeebies and also screw off.
Did you notice that he is wearing glasses?
Its his glasses he has bad eyes.
It's funny, because a few months ago my partner asked me what I would like for my Birthday and Christmas, and because I couldn't think of anything and I feel bad when people give me gifts, I actually told him he should pay for us to go somewhere nice for a day so we can have an exciting experience together.
Meh, I just ask them what they want. This way I don't have to figure out what they want/already have, and they get something they actually can enjoy. It's win/win. And big shocker, it's usually cash everyone wants.
I make things. My next item will be a cheap knife. Like, grinding, drilling, fitting wooden scales, sanding the edges, finishing, and sharpening. Some IRL crafting.
It's not always something you need, but that "wow, you made this?!" factor always helps.
My perfect gift? Give me money, Its that simple. I know what i want, so by giving me the ability to get what i want, you have given me the best gift of all!
I've never disappointed anyone at Christmas. ^^ I'm great at giving gifts.
Bought one present this year, it was a part for my best friends car that he needed. Money well spent, gift well received. I hate Christmas
Gifts should be something personal that represents some connection you share withe the person. A gift made by you for tailored to the persons tastes. A gift that represents a link or common like between you too. So, yes a shared experience is good, but so is a game you can play together, a book reflecting a common interest you can discuss, a piece of art you both like, a tool you can both use, a poem you wrote for the other person (if you are good at poetry)...
God.

PacWeezyYMCMB Yeah? Well I don't like your insults.
Stuff like that is why I tend to make it clear that if it's a bird thing, I'm happy because I collect bird statues and photos and it's also pretty safe to get me any type of tech gear, be it headsets, jump drives (I always need more storage) programs or anything of the like, because I know those things will get used. Best gift someone can get me is something I can use, unless it's a bird statue or something, I just love birds.
My wife & I don't suck at gift giving - the people we buy them for suck at receiving them! We always ask peeps well in advance what they want for birthdays or christmas etc. Months later, we spend our hard-earned cash on those items, gift wrap & cards. Then, my wife wastes her time wrapping the gifts up. Once we hand them over to the peep concerned, they give that look that says "Ugh! not what I wanted..!" We were once told by a friend that our gifts were 'cheap' - Cheap?!?! The money we spent on those gifts was pricey for us. We have since discontinued gifting this person =^_^=
I have the perfect gift giving strategy. I give gifts that I like and think are cool, or my friends think are cool that I already have or I just straight up ask them what they want for Christmas no surprises.
i love gift giving and if i feel like the gift is too artificial and I'll add a scrapbook and like 9/10 they make the people i give them to cry because they're super cute. good thing they said the best gift is an experience because I got my boyfriend concert tickets. I was beginning to think 400$ was too much on a christmas gift but woohoo i guess i did the right thing!
What concert was it? Does he get to go back stage?
Arturs Sinelnikovs foo fighters and nah like the shittiest seats in the house were like 90$ each but i wanted to get decent seats for him (and by seats i meant i wanted general admission pit-section where all the fun is at!). Of course now they've gone down in price -.- but i needed to get them on time for christmas
I enjoy getting nothing. Or simply being around the people I care about. Honestly I avoid going anywhere or doing anything around periods when someone may give me a gift, because I don't want them to give me a gift. However I would much rather just spend time with those people.
The reason its shitty to just ask for money or to be super specific about what gift you want is that it shows that you expect to receive something. If you take away the freedom of choice from the gift giver it's no longer a gift as much as it is a social obligation. Your giving your friends/family a chore that you want them to accomplish. Frankly, it takes away from what the Yuletide season should actually be about, and pours in an extra helping of consumerism.
"tickets to a hockey game". I LIKE THIS GUY. -- goalie.
I prefer an experience gift because they never go away and they're kept locked in our hearts ❤
But a material gift is kept locked in our rooms, basement and closet.
unless your heart's locked in the basement, then it's more or less the same.

I have some locked in a jar in the basement.

People usually get tired of something old. Listen to them throughout the year even by the slightest complaint of their hobby
This is why it is good to be a nerd, we experience video games and fandoms, the current season of Game of Thrones or the game they asked for is an experience. Gourmands also a good thing to be as we see food as an experience, at least I do. Lastly I know a few artists who turn art supplies or audio equipment into an experience. Other wise you have to buy a 500$ vacation.
Money. One size fits all.
Don't give gifts, cut the stupidity out of Christmas, problem solved
But think of all the starving CEO's and mega-corporations!
Totally agree. I _hate_ it to buy gifts. They're a single waste of money.
Merthalophor
I just dont buy gifts and in turn i dont expect any, works fine for

Alexander Boehm Brain washed consumerist mongol, decide for yourself rather than following the trend
I'd pref the money tbh, or for christmas not to be a thing everyone always seems to get themselves twisted over.. It baffles me that people put so much.. Mental effort into it and thinking about how they /must/ get all/the perfect gifts for whomever.. As opposed to being able to buy three times as much come the january sales.
Like, seriously, put some research into monetary values, and teach your kids or try to level with your SO or whatever about it.
That brand new £200 bike or £600 ipad for christmas? Or the same one for 1/3 the price halfway through january?
But a flipside applies to this - buying christmas gifts in january just seems stupid to me, and I was told it's something my sister does - Why even bother buying it if you're just going to let it sit for a year so you "dont have to worry about christmas spending" as opposed to just.. Celebrating your family's own christmas .. After christmas, so you can afford it?
Social responsibility and marketing.. They baffle me, and not in the good way.
His eyes are like the one set of eyes in any character customization that no one ever uses because they look so fucking weird
Bleh. I love giving gifts and getting gifts.
For me it doesn't matter that much what the gift i get is, it's just showing that the gift giver cares about you.
awesome holiday intro!
Money is a perfect gift. Cold hard cash is always preferable to shitty gifts no matter how much thought went into them.
The H1Z1 add looked pretty good
I always win when it comes to giving gifts!
All the thins I want, I can get by myself. And they are usually too pricey for anyone to just casually hand them over to me anyway.
So they give me gift cards instead. I hate the idea of gift cards, seriously. It's like they give you money, but you're only able to spend it on THAT specific store. What? Why?
People make christmas into a gift-giving obligation rather than a celebration day, seriously. Just give me a feasty dinner, and I'll be happy. Don't give me stuff I just don't want, and make me look like the bad guy for NOT liking their leftover gifts. :V
I don't give gifts. Never any clue what to get.
make a list of thing you would like pass it to the family then they can get you some thing you want
we'd love those hockey tickets too!
My answer: Because I'm flat ass broke
If people are lucky they get one perfect gift from me. Usually when I first get to know them. The rest of the time they get shitty or no gifts from me.
i allways come with fresh ideas and fresh gifts
Last year I asked people to just make a donation to a charity in my name if they want to give a gift. That did not go over well. My mom, a cousin, and an uncle were actually very offended. Am I crazy to think they're crazy??
Not at all. It's odd they got offended. The gift is about you not them
Some people just can't see the way you do. It's not your fault.
Or you just ask the person who you are giving the gift to by just saying "What do you want for Christmas?"
Guys here is the ultimate method
tell the recipient of the gift u got them something and ask them to guess him/her will tell you a list of things that he/she wants
yes posting this on christmas eve XD
the fuck? just give cash. I've never received cash from someone and said oh wow what a thoughtless gift. its cash. unless you already have a great idea or see something you know would be perfect just give cash. everyone loves it and they can use it on what they NEED not what you think they might want.
in my house we all make a list of what we want from cheap things to more expensive things then we just get something from the list we swapped...
Magic cards will never fail with me.
"Lets Wrap about Presents." Heh.

Some pot edibles will really "lighten" up someones day...
Money is the perfect gift
why give gift at all when the one who you give the gift to don't like it or its the wrong side or the wrong color or it not the one they wanted, so why bother giving gift at all
Why couldn't you have posted this like a week ago!!!!
money=best gift

Give them food. Everyone'll use food, and it looks like you put more effort in than if you gave them money.
Someone give him a comb!
I just ask them what they want twenty dollars or less and give them exactly what they want lol.
This is y we know what Santa brought us when u get older
One person I've really give up on giving gifts to is my brother because he nether likes them no matter what I do :P
When we did secret Santa in my class everyone got cool gifts and I got felt pens .-. I would rather have a bar of chocolate or something because I never use felt pens for art xD btw it's because I'm good at drawing that they got me this
so you dont think my brother will like his mansion. awwww
as a slightly bigger, slightly stronger nerd. I want to shove julian into a locker and steal his shirt
gift cards are stupid why not give them the money instead
Yes you better be sorry
Money. that's all I need to say.
I don't like to give or receive gifts for no good reasons… Christmas is a terrible reason to give gifts! Gifts should only be given to people when you know they'll appreciate it and that they deserve it. There is no "schedule" for appropriate gift giving.
Same here. I recently got a gift from someone that appreciates me and I felt more happy than when I got a crap ton of gifts last christmas.
I only give Christmas gifts to people I appreciate. As for earning a gift...
Doesn't sound quite right to me, that just sounds like payment.
BillyJoe1305 Everything is "transactions" in this world… lol!
