Ceres actually was considered to be a planet at one point. As well as a number of other large astroids in what was discovered to be the astroid belt. After there were about 20 something OFFICIAL Planets, the scientists realized that maybe some of these probably shouldn't be counted as actual planets. So the demotion of Pluto was not a new thing.
It's funny how the perception of the real world over time is progressing along the same path as game design. You start out with a flat world with a flat plane above for the sky, then a flat world surrounded by endless ocean, a flat world surrounded by infinite wasteland, then a flat world surrounded by impassible barriers with a skybox, then finally you start seeing spherical worlds...
