    Great channel, really underrated. I guess this ATS manufacturer is not worrying themselves with the whole SDS business, seeing as the neutral is permanently connected and shared between the utility and the genset. I never quite understood what the big deal with separately derived systems was, and this kind of confirms it lol.

    So the assumption is that within the wired ATS on the right, 1) It is bonded, so it is the 1st point of disconnect. 2) The service entry conductors (un-fused) from the meter entering the ATS at bottom right are sharing the same conduit as load conductors fused.

      Good catch, I just pulled a random pic from the internet, likely the panel on the right is going to be another disconnect because they are sharing a conduit.

    I have an automatic transfer switch still intact from a 16KW Generac whole house generator whose alternator froze up. To replace the whole house generator, I have a tri-fuel Firman portable generator that I plan on using manually to power the household plugs during a power outage. Do you think I could attach the 50 Amp cord into the existing line from the generator to the transfer switch? Also Are you able to manually pull the yellow lever down and use the transfer switch with a large portable generator? If I disconnect all the wires going to the transfer switch (12V), would I be able to manually pull the yellow lever down and use the transfer switch with a large portable generator? Thank you for your great video. I have a Generac Automatic Switch ( NEA3R.)Thank you for your great video.

    We live about 60 miles from the closest major city. I have a fairly new ATS switch (same as the one on the left side in your video) which is about 18 months old, professionally installed for a new Honeywell 20KW generator unit. A recent electrical storm in July 2022 knocked out 2 garage door openers and about 6 LED light bulbs in our house. We were not hit by lightning - but the flash of lightning and thunder were nearly instantaneous above the house and very close to the ground... Anyhow, our generator will exercise on time as it is scheduled - but - it kicks our active grid/utility power off line and exercises as scheduled. When the exercise period is complete the generator shuts down and abandons all power sources and leaves the house without any power... Can you help me understand what parts (i.e. modules..solenoids..switches..wiring..? etc..) I may need to concentrate on to correct this issue..? My 6.5 AH fuses are all in good shape... Your best guess would be greatly appreciated... Thank you...

    can you explain the control wiring

    It does appear that your line and load are both run in the same conduit. That is a violation of code.

    Nice job coach why does that neutral bar looks like is is crooked lol
    Can you use any generator that does not have control sensor wires???

    So the automatic transfer switch technically can be a subpanel if you unbond the neutral bar and put a separate Ground Bar in there cuz you got to run a ground wire to the generator correct as well as another grounding conductor to the transfer switch please correct me if I'm wrong

    • @ElectricalCodeCoach
      @ElectricalCodeCoach  2 роки тому

      If correctly wired, that transfer switch can be installed anywhere in the service/feeder system.

    I just watched another video you produced ton Transfer switches and what NOT to do! I am just learning, and you talk fast, so I hope I am not missing something. Did you say that you cannot use the same conduit that feeds your transfer switch service conductors to carry your load conductors to the panel. This video looks like it is doing just that. Please clarify.

      Great question, and you are correct you can not pass back through. For this illustration we imagined that this picture was being fed from a disconnect in that case it would be legal.

    My electrician put in a non service rated Generac transfer switch right off the meter. The generator folk said it was a code violation because they had to pull out a fuse to test the generator. The master electrician maintains it is to code. To me it would make sense to have a transfer switch with the built in breaker in this configuration.
    Thoughts?

      Does the non service rated ATS have a breaker installed for the feeders , is the AFCI at the breaker inside the ATS rated at 10,000 afci? Or 22,000 AFCI rated

    Nice video! I am a bit confused -- I have looked at several videos showing 400Amp Generac ATS installs... The confusion is this -- Most of what I see is that there are installs that SHOW 4 "Hots" coming into the ATS and taken up to the TOP of the Transfer Switch -- My confusion is WHY would there be 4 Hots coming from a Meter and not just 2 Hots if the Meter is supplied with 400/320 Continuous from the Transformer through the meter? In this video -- It looks like the ATS on the right ONLY has TWO HOTS at the top of the Switch? Can you explain this for me?
