Harpo was a true, serious musician. This is such a simple song and he made it into this incredible rendition on the harp. RIP Harpo. You are certainly missed here.
The other woman is Doris Singleton. She and Lucy must have really gotten along well with each other as she appeared in all of the series that Lucy made.
Vivian Vance and Doris Singleton (who played Carolyn) were so mesmerized by Harpo's playing that Singleton asked him if he would play for the cast and crew after the taping. He obliged and gave them an hour-long concert.
He was known as one of the most charitable of the Marx Brothers, particularly him and Chico, performed at hospitals for children and the elderly, anywhere where laughter and joy was a healing power. In that, amongst other ways, they were quite admirable in how they used their talent and fame. They were both also such gifted comedians and musicians. May they both RIP. They are missed by so many.
This wonderful, creative master taught himself the harp, as many here know. Just a magnificent entertainer who happened to also be unparalleled as a silent comic!
+Darcy Brummett Chico took the piano lessons, then came home and gave them to Harpo. Harpo was actually quite an accomplished pianist in Chico's bawdy-comic style.
I love baseball and I love this song.My wife loves Lucy and when I heard this my mouth dropped to the floor.I have heard different versions of this song but this is the best and sweetest I have ever heard, bar none!
I am speechless... No pun intended ;-) The musicians, comedians, & actors of these times were so much more inteligent than the ones we have today. Great work HM!
Harpo was a renaissance man with a second-grade education. A fine musician, a grand comedian, and a truly nice guy. He didn't have an enemy in the world, loved his work, his family loved him, and he left a legacy that will last forever. He asked Marcel Marceau to give him some pointers and Marceau said Harpo was a far better mime than he (Marceau) could ever aspire to be.
It appears that they definitely knew of each other, and that the Marx Bros inspired Marcel. I could see in the retelling of the story that the roles became reversed. www.imdb.com/name/nm0545131/
As a kid his harp playing was the thing I always waited for watching Marx Bros movies. 67 y/o now and I have him to thank for my love of hearing that instrument to this day. Beautiful and so relaxing.
Harpo the character always struck me as beyond human. Impish, fey-like, and hilarious as can be. Ornery and unusual, but able to play such sensitive and gorgeous pieces of music. He's like Pan: always in the present, always beautiful, always smiling. He represents all the joys of being a human. I try to embody a bit of Harpo in my outlook on life. He's a gift to us all.
I use to wait until each summer break as I grew up in school to hopefully see this particular episode. It was always worth it. And now it is on UA-cam. Absolutely Amazing..... Thank you for posting this
He had just recovered from heart troubles, hard to believe the way he's so full of energy and he looks great, he unfortunately passed away a day after a heart operation in 1964. At the funeral Groucho's son said it was the only time he saw his father cry.
He was. He could bring an audience to tears of laughter with his antics then just plain tears with his beautiful harp playing. He taught himself to play & developed his own unorthodox technique. Harp players thereafter would ask him to teach them his method of playing. There'll never be another like Harpo. He was so sweet and gentle. He didn't even speak, let alone use dirty words to get a laugh. I'm just happy we can watch so much of him on YT.
He could have had an amazing career in music alone, playing the world's biggest stages with amazing orchestras, but he chose to make people laugh, and share music with them. We won't see his equal for a long time.
I first saw this when I was 7 and before I saw this I never thought you could play "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" on the harp and make it sound good-but Harpo sure did! I like how he added a little suspense in between the "One, two, three strikes your out" part!
I have been a fan of classical music, jazz, and many other musical genders for more than 50 years. But what this genius did here,i have no words to describe it. He just took a simple folk song and wrapped it as a glorious gift for the angels. Mozart couldn´t have done it more beautifuly. God bless you Harpo, wherever you are.
Whoever thought Take Me Out To The Ballgame could sound so beautiful?! I saw this on I Love Lucy last night and was so glad to find it on UA-cam so I can listen to it anytime I want!
Upon his retirement from show business, Harpo started to take some serious harp lessons. But he wound up teaching the instructor as much as he was learning.
Those 2 ladies are genuinely enjoying Harpo playing.
You could just see their chillbumps
Harpo was a true, serious musician. This is such a simple song and he made it into this incredible rendition on the harp. RIP Harpo. You are certainly missed here.
The awe was genuine. You could see the goosebumps on Ethel
The last tune in the world you would expect to played on the harp yet Harpo makes it work - and beautifully.
His son Bill arranged this song for him.
You can see that Vivian Vance and the other woman were legitimately enthralled by Harpo's playing. This is just beautiful.
Yeah, I was just watching this on MeTV today, and to think he was 67 in this episode, I thought 40's!!!!!
The other woman is Doris Singleton. She and Lucy must have really gotten along well with each other as she appeared in all of the series that Lucy made.
Richard D'Ambrosio I've always thought so too. No acting there.
Doris Singleton (Carolyn Appleby) lived a long full life. Just left us in 2012, age 92.
@@Woody615 Doris Singleton portrayed Carolyn Appleby.
When they rated the top 10 Lucy episodes, this one clocked in at #5. Harpo was magnificent.
I don't know why but when I hear him play this my eyes get all teary.
That seems to happen whenever I hear him play ANYTHING!
I heartily concur. A TRUE maestro.
That happens to me too!
Because the sounds of the harp speak to the heart. I have similarly :)
I do too
IMHO, one of the best moments in the history of television.
you are not kidding my friend.
Very true!
My first inkling of Harpo Marx (I was born several months after this episode). This also my #1 favorite ILL episode.
most beautiful version of take me out to the ball game ever
He Learned it's true. I get chills every day I hear it
Brought me to 😭
Too bad Hollywood doesn't have stars like him anymore.
Too bad Hollywood doesn't have stars. Period.
So true. Movie stars used to actually have talent.
@@johnbowman1076 ikr. That's why I love old movies b/w and color
Give it time, the current status quo will "kill" the industry, then it will be reborn and return to glory.
If they'd get rid of all the light pollution you'd be able to notice the stars that are still there, even today.

@@LoneWombat2126 Well said.
Now, that's a wonderful guy for you. And he was.
No stars like that today. How sad 22 people gave this a “thumbs down”. They don’t recognize talent .
This wonderful, creative master taught himself the harp, as many here know. Just a magnificent entertainer who happened to also be unparalleled as a silent comic!
Just as no one could duplicate the way Chico played the piano, no one could play the harp as beautifully as Harpo!
+Darcy Brummett Chico took the piano lessons, then came home and gave them to Harpo. Harpo was actually quite an accomplished pianist in Chico's bawdy-comic style.
ANYONE WHO THUMBS DOWN THIS CLIP IS JUST NASTY. NO TASTE

Pop music, surely, but today's roots music musicians is a hotbed of talent and creativity. Check out Billy Strings.
Agree
I just love his serious face when he plays the harp.
He was still a cutie at age 67. Nice looking man all his life.

Sheer mastery! What is there not to love?? Behind that goofy exterior lies a musical giant. Superbly well played, leaves you wanting for more.

Marcel Marceau had the only speaking part in Silent Movie.

I remember as a kid I saw Marcel Marceau and had a crush on him. I knew of him before I knew of Harpo.
In my opinion, you'll never find a better rendition of that!!! & i'm a rock lover from the 1960's on!!!!!
What a beautiful moment. Harpo was a genius.
This is too Beautiful...He just made Take me out to the Ball Game in such a Classical Fashion....Bravo, dude

Whenever Harpo plays, in the movies or elsewhere, time seems to stop. The short dream ends and you are back watching a sitcom.
One of the most beautiful moments on TV.
