They really did come up in dreadful poverty; Minnie Marx was constantly on the hustle, she found Leonard (Chico) a piano teacher who was strong on the one hand (I forget which) but Chico learned one hand, Minnie had him teach Harpo who became a one-handed piano like Chico! Harpo had serious musical gifts and could play anything he got his hands one! It was said while the brothers were on the road raising hell, Minnie got a telegram from Chico and Groucho saying "Ahdie (Arthur/Harpo) wants a harp" and that is the version I hold to! Harpo fascinated legions of Harp players,

Love the Marx Brothers...as a kid in the 50s and 60s, Groucho was unbelievable, but my favorite part was always Harpo playing his harp. It was other-worldly. My dad, who played piano, told me that Chico didn't practice/rehearse. He just soaked his hands in warm water for 20 minutes....
Brilliant musician. AND hilarious. Interesting how the people standing by the keyboard - usually gorgeous women or kids - are so fixated on his hands as they do their magic. Wish I'd been there.

What a phenomenally beautiful technique Chico Marx had playing the piano. It is always so much fun watching him play the piano in the Marx Brothers films!
Chico had fingers that danced on the piano keys. Can tell he loved piano and performing. He was really amazing. Bet he's still entertainig them in heaven. God bless chico. Was a masterful player. Full of colour even in b/w.
Was speaking metaphorically .Ha deary me. Well what if said this. Just because filmed b/w then , doesn't mean they weren't in colour then. Wow. Never new that. Learn something new everyday.Wow. Next they be saying. They were in colour, but they painted them in b/w ha!. Either-or they were very talented colourful people . Wish could met them.
Aged 7, I began attending Saturday arvo matinées at Ballarat's Britannia Theatre ((1860s Mechanics Institute, Sturt Street) Marx Bros movies lay in limbo - not yet acknowledged classics, but long past use-by date, prints much-used, cheap hire. We LOVED them. Town filled with kids foced to practise piano, imitating Chico's digital dancing, comic choreography. Harpo's prodigious musical gifts on his eponymous instrument woke many an infant soul to fine period pieces. Thanks!
Without a doubt, Chico Marx was one of the greatest piano players of all time. So effortless and entertaining. He was so good you can't help but be mesmerized. Great comedian, master musician
What a great compilation of some of the most enjoyable piano playing (a portion of) the world has ever seen. Cheers to the Marx Brothers for all the entertainment and laughs and their iconic breaking of many of the rules. Peace.
His famous pistol-shot technique! He learned piano from a man who only mastered one hand and taught that hand to Chico who was left to teach Arthur (Harpo) that one hand! Harpo knew two songs "Love me an the World Is Mine and Waltz Me Around Again Willie“ so he got jobs, age 12, playing piano in saloons, where they kicked him out as soon as they realized he only had two songs! But he was a genius who attracted many harpists who he hoped would teach him better technique, but they just watched him in awe and left!
News FLASH, that wasn't finger technique. What Chico had was natural. Once Introduced to this instrument? Well, he had what they say idiot Savants have. Only their absence of the concious reasoning ability. Chico, a genius at the keyboard. You can't teach what he had. A Georgy Czifffa only comes to mind. The gypsy. Just crazy easiness when playing everything. Also, Jose Iturbi had this gift.
Never have I enjoyed watching Chiko and his brother fooling around but impeccable style of playing. Chiko reminds me of someone I went to school with in the 1950s who played the same way as Chiko does. At school concerts he would sit at the grand piano and start with something from Chopin and turn it into a medley . He had the ability to make the audience laugh . Sadly he lost his life before he was 20 when he got washed out to sea and drowned. A sad loss of great talent. Chiko reminds me of a naughty school boy taking the mickey out of his music teacher which would have everyone rolling on the floor with laughter.
Whenever the Marx Bros. play music they have smiles on their faces. Just like me when I listen to music - always w/ a smile. Love the fact that they also have the most beautiful women for audiences, but also loved playing for kids. I always envied people capable of playing keyboard, as it has confounded me and all of my thumbs.

Harpo had serious musical gifts and could play anything he got his hands one! It was said while the brothers were on the road raising hell, Minnie got a telegram from Chico and Groucho saying "Ahdie (Arthur/Harpo) wants a harp" and that is the version I hold to!
Harpo fascinated legions of Harp players,
@@carolvogelman5261 i could watch em play all day!
You are not alone in this!
I don't know of anyone else that can play life this...what a gift.
Never had a piano teacher teach it that way. The skill must've died.
I've been a Marx bros fan since I was 13 and saw A Day At the Races on AMC when I was 13. I'm 40 now and Chico's pistol shot move is still one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
a must have watched over a 100 times since i was 10yrs old on old Vhs tapes which got pretty worn out with constant rewinding and playing, Total genuis on the piano, will never get tired of watching it.my early years was my grandad on the Dulcmer playing the same stuff...cant get better than Chico showing off on the piano
I'm happy to say I've rediscovered Chico and have come to appreciate His contributions to the team particularly His unique style of piano playing.
Chico was an amazing talent! I can watch those hilarious Marx Brothers movies over and over again! Everyone of them were talented in their own right, including Zeppo but not so much!!! I’ve been a huge fan my entire life! Thanks for this! My 5 year old granddaughter just started playing piano. I’m going to forward this on to my daughter to show it to my granddaughter! I’m sure they will be a fan for life, too! ❤️👏👍😂🤣
There is ONE Chico Marx. Only One forever !! Thanks a lot Chico !!!!!!!!
I can listen to him several times a day and never get bored he’s so funny and entertaining
No need to colourise it! That would mess up film history. Leave it bl/w!
Wish could met them.
brilliant
@@sniperwolf9278 how are you doing today my name is Eric Moore
I wish I could like this twice. Thank you for making this.
Open another account and you could.
And he was so young ... long ago ... and very charming!
Oh, yea, it comes through even today. I feel it........
Chico always seemed to love what he was doing! Marx Bros were always having fun in their movies. ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺
The most amazing and gifted entertainer to sit in front of a keyboard. Chico had the ladies wrapped around his little finger (and he knew it!)
I just happened on to this little gem and am blowing away by this man's genius! Eat your heart out Jerry Lee Lewis!
Thanks!
Leonard Marx sure could play with the best of them. Magnificent!
Without a doubt, Chico Marx was one of the greatest piano players of all time. So effortless and entertaining. He was so good you can't help but be mesmerized. Great comedian, master musician
No One Shoots the keys like Chico
+Lise Kartak-McDonald can't take my eyes off the man's right hand. he's a virtuoso alright.
Who wouldn't love sitting beside this man play???? Truley Awesome!!!!!
Alice Kottmyer even the little kids did, in 1 of the earliest clips. would’ve loved to of had him for a granddad, or maybe younger.
Tricky tricks
@@replyhere590 Didn't the brothers have families and children? Chico was very comical, but very serious about his music.
There are very few piano players that are as fun to watch as they are to listen to.
What a great compilation of some of the most enjoyable piano playing (a portion of) the world has ever seen. Cheers to the Marx Brothers for all the entertainment and laughs and their iconic breaking of many of the rules. Peace.
Good music is not only about technique. Harpo plays much more beautiful and heavenly!
Chico taught himself the piano. His so cool he can joke around with his hands and still put out entertaining music.
How are you doing today my name is Eric Moore
Chico had piano lessons. The family couldn't afford for both Chico and Harpo. Harpo was self taught on piano and harp. From the book Minnie's Boys.
he always seemed to have fun playing
This is called Talent. No auto-tune just a musician and the instrument.
I love how he rolls his right hand over and hits the top note like a pistol with his index finger.
It is as if he has more fingers than the rest of us and makes it look so easy...but it isn't!
I doubt if anyone teaches piano like this anymore.
Virginia Connor I doubt if anyone ever did, except Chico to himself.
To Chico, it was part of the entertainment. He not only played the piano; he had his fingers dance, while he was at it!
Chico had one of the most creative fingering techniques, ever!!!
Bet his wife was happy
@@hellfire66683 You nawty boy ...

@@maryfield1452 Thanks for the laugh!
Chico was a great player. His brother Harpo was a hoot when playing with him.
it's such a blow when talent is taken from us before it should be
Fabulous. Great memories of watching their films.
Love the last clip when he just casually stands at the piano, and Harpo bouncing on the chair, geniuses
One of my Classical trained, Mother's All Time Favorite Pianists of all Time, thank you, Chico
I like the way Chico looks straight at the camera and smile. So lovely and innocent.
Thanks for uploading these precious musical moments. Chico Marx was a great comedian and a great piano player.
Absolutely marvellous! A privilege to watch .
This dude was amazingly entertaining and accomplished.
This is so classic. I love it. The Marx bros. were amazing.
