Watching Chico and Harpo play their instruments, I can't help noticing how their characters transform. When I watch Chico here, he has the look of a very playful child who also happens to be a virtuoso pianist. And when I watch Harpo's harp scenes, it amazes me that his face takes on a look of very strict seriousness that's the opposite of his normal mugging.

    • @ClaudiusPunchinello

Harpo had this to say about the Harpo who appears on screen: "When he's chasing a girl across the screen it's him. When he sits down to play the harp, it's me. Whenever I touched the strings of the harp, I stopped being an actor."

I can't even begin to imagine how many hours--let alone years--it takes to reach the absolutely brilliant level of piano playing demonstrated by Chico Marx! Not to mention the enormous musical talent Chico was obviously born with! You can't play the piano that brilliantly without having incredible, God-given talent! To be able to coordinate your hands to play different keys on the piano keyboard so effortlessly is absolutely remarkable. He makes it look so easy!

Harpo had serious musical gifts and could play anything he got his hands one! It was said while the brothers were on the road raising hell, Minnie got a telegram from Chico and Groucho saying "Ahdie (Arthur/Harpo) wants a harp" and that is the version I hold to!
Harpo fascinated legions of Harp players,

Chiko reminds me of someone I went to school with in the 1950s who played the same way as Chiko does. At school concerts he would sit at the grand piano and start with something from Chopin and turn it into a medley . He had the ability to make the audience laugh . Sadly he lost his life before he was 20 when he got washed out to sea and drowned. A sad loss of great talent.
