Hi my local disk (C:) is an ssd and I want to change it to an hdd will that change the preferences of the laptop? (other than speed because it's an ssd)
Yeah man all of your information is probably on your hard drive so by switching your hard drive yes you will need to reinstall Windows or whatever operating system you use and all of your files, programs, settings, etc.
So if I were to do this by myself I would have to buy windows to install on SSD correct? Or could I just you boot up recover disks from old hard drive?
What I do is get an Apricorn? disk copy cable, then mirror the drive per their instructions. Now I remove the HDD from the notebook and replace it with it's new larger mirrored drive.
I have 2 17” of those got them back in 2008 need batteries and 1 needs a new harddrive
Thank you.

But actually, the best thing to do is to clone your current drive to the new one. Then all you need to do is plug it in.
