Get a fence electrifier. Connect one terminal to the chain. Run an insulated wire from the other terminal out to the suet feeder and connect it. (As long as it isn't enameled or otherwise non-conductive.) The birds won't get zapped because they're not grounded, but when the squirrels hang down to grab the feeder - POW! (Take the dome off too, they need to be able to make the circuit.) And very important - set the camera up!
This was really amusing to watch! There was a show done by the BBC I believe it was called Squirrels Daylight Robbery or something like that and it showed how they can learn to navigate an obstacle course to get food.
I think remember that one!! I wish it was shown again. If I recall correctly, I think it was a two-part program. My brothers and I simply howled watching the antics - right down to, and including, the squirrel fording the most elaborate barricade and hookup leading to a pole with peanuts; and another raiding a candy vending machine.
LMAO!!!! My mom used to put out those suet feeders too!! Lucky for her, my dad put it on a metal pole with a metal cable to hang the suet on. The squirrels couldn't climb the metal and cause it was out in the open they couldn't jump over to it. Squirrels are sneaky characters!!!!
Powdered hot peppers became my weapon of choice; it won't hurt the birds. I also gave the squirrels and chipmunks their own feeder with dried corn, peanuts and raisins well away from the feeders.
What I LOVE about this video is the joyful laughter that "little bastard" inspired in you, it was contagious. I've watched a LOT of birds eating at feeders and based on my experience, I'd bet the farm that BIRDS eating suet don't make you laugh that way. This clip makes me think we humans may be denying ourselves more joy by glomming onto the belief that birds should be the only species allowed to eat 'bird food.' "Beliefs are just thoughts you keep thinking." Magnificently, we're always free to have new thoughts. Awesome video, Janet.
Jan Long Its not about squirrels not only making u laugh, they teach u also a lot be persistent, think out of the box keep ur eye fixed on the goal whatever hurdle May be .... but point is its hard to feed squirrels coz they are ferocious eaters they finish of the food which they like in no time and let no bird come, if they eat in small quantities like birds and birds can come in their presence i am sure nobody will have problem with squirrels ...
I understand completely!! I've added PVC pipe to my pole and so far only one has managed to get up on it , but feeders r too far from pole so he didn't make it. Planning on adding stove pipe around the PVC tomorrow.
That chain should be a vinyl covered clothes line, less grip for them. And ultimately, a B.B. gun, or pellet.Once they do damage and that great, to your vehicle's wiring.hoses, you'll quit playing around with them.
They have all day and an empty belly to persevere. I have same issues and even when I find best spot that squirrels can’t get do, they always survey the feeder each day to see any openings. Smart little things
Your not thinking like a squirrel, make your hanging lines for each bird feeder a minimum of 21 inches in length which is longer than a squirrels body. Then watch them go nuts falling most of the time. Cheers!
So amazing the agility and balance squirrels have.they're so fast and can even run on a dang cable lol..they use the furry tail for balancing..so fun to watch these guys..
that chain link is helping it. Use a combo of thin wire, then put plastic ball, plastic pipe (2X) in between the feeders. Some will run and jump the ball but the pipe after the ball will spin when they land on it and that damn squirrel will fall!
Such a fun video to watch! Loved all your attempts to stop that little "%#&*^". I'd really like to know where I could get a link to the music. You have a great laugh also!
@@johnsmit2348 I never found a link. I'm sure there is an easier way, but I played the video, recorded the music on phone and saved the file. Got about 4 minutes with no talk. Hope that helps
@@timb8899 Thanks buddy, I did the same and I'm putting it to use on the banjo lol. I truck Salt Lake UT and Nogales AZ from up here all the time, but am retiring. Stay safe dude.
@@johnsmit2348 Congrats on your upcoming retirement. I drove semi, doubles and triples for 32 years. Been retired for 9 years now and don't miss the traffic. Barely drive 5k a year now.
String the setup with 0.4mm wire, then they cant steady then selves to jump, they can only do under arm crawl, the wire is to slippery and thin for then to walk along
I been watching these things for 2 days , this one was the best hahahahahaha. I deal with raccoons , I literally had to pad lock my suet feeder and nail it to a board. The first one I put on they literally walked away with hahahaha
You get 10 out of 10 for all your efforts 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 But squirrels are persistent little blighters... Let us know if you finally beat him 👊 Kudos to you kid👍
Dear Ms Sall, I can tell you are a compassionate person. Sadly, American gray squirrels are quite impudent and greedy: they won't share with the birds. There are plenty of nut and acorn trees where I live, but they would rather eat the bird food. At least they are entertaining! all the best, J
The secret would seem to be making the chain squirrel proof...try covering the entire chain with segments of PVC pipe that will rotate...experiment with different diameters and lengths of segment...I would guess half to one inch pipe...segments 6 inch long...
Most people will disconnect the chain and then run it through the milk jugs, but I have heard of people using just mere thought and walla the jugs are magically on the chain lol just kidding :o)
LOVED it How about getting some plumbing piping (1 inch thick) ...cut it into 6 inch lengths and fill up your chain with it from one end to the other with all this six inch pieces...each piece will turn on its own and cause him to fall. Good Luck
I have this same problem right now. Now I feel sorry for the hummingbirds. I had my bird feeder up for about a month. I noticed one day it was on the ground. Caught the little bastard drinking the nectar upside down. Blew me away. I’ve been cussing since yesterday. Left this morning and he knocked it down again and chewed up the flowers on it.
They are very persistent the small little creatures, aren't they? The plastic milk containers work to a certain degree. To make it very effective, you should grease up the chain. If the chain is greased, no way the squirrel have any grip and will fall down. Problem solved. That said, squirrels are a little pest if you want your bird feeders to be left alone, but then you are successful with protecting them, don't forget squirrels are hungry too, so place a bucket with some food in a corner of the garden only for them.
I was hoping for a hair tutorial before stumbling off to bed, but this was quite fun. Thanks for sharing. You have a few more months to improve your security system, good luck.
Hmmmm try some grease on the chain where the squirrel keeps getting up on it. Smear the grease enough that the squirrel can't just try the obvious of jumping over it to the next clean part of the chain. I'm not sure about trying some Crisco.... hmmmm this might even be a food source for him and then he won't care as much about getting the bird seed and suet :o)
You'll never win with obstacles. It takes only one success with all of your obstacles. Just shoot them with an air gun and bury them or feed them to a predator.
This is a great lesson from the squirrel that persistence pays off! Where there is a will there is a way. Glad you could laugh about it!

His frantic scramble to get away once he's caught is hilarious. He moves faster than a Key Stone Cop.
I put 7 two liter bottles at each end of the wire,
And five feeders in the middle..
Nothing has defeated that system in 7 years

You need washers at the mouth of each milk jug to keep them together and still able to rotate. A split washer cut from plastic would work. good luck
1/16th cable instead of chain works great.

Simply grease the chain with Vaseline for the entire length-- they hate the stuff...works on poles too...a good greasing will last an entire season.
Large soft drink bottles work great.

Try PVC pipes cut in 12" segments. The PVC will be a roll bar on the chain.
But replace the chain with vinyl covered clothes line. Not as much grip and still strong as it's got steel cable inside. the green stuff.
Ick! safflower seeds!
