I tried the Altra Timps, Superiors, and Lone Peaks. The Lone Peaks are my favorites. The Superiors and Timps ate my heels alive after the heel liner fabric wore out in a couple hundred miles on the AT. I have over 400 miles of mixed walking and hiking on my Lone Peaks. No blisters and the heel liners are just beginning show signs of wear. My other favorite for short hikes are the New Balance Minimus. I can wear them without my custom orthotics. Not the Altras - no arch support in them. The Minimus have fantastic trail feel and grip, but practically no padding.
I have owned both shoes and like them both. I have hiked more in the Lone Peaks. I agree on the Topo color selection. Thanks for the review.
I bought some Lone Peaks for Christmas based on your earlier comments. I haven’t had them on trail yet but they are very comfortable.
My favorite is the Altra Lone Peak, but I like the Altra Olympus too.
I want to try the Olympus.
I had someone at REI in the shoe and boot section tell that laces that are flat tend to stay tied better than round ones. I switched over and noticed a difference.

You’re 100% right about dry time. Topos take forever compared to lone peaks to dry. I’ve gone through both pairs and even prefer the Topos for durability. But the dry time is noteable.

Thanks for introducing me to the Altras. I have the 5.0 Lone Peaks. Hiked hundreds of miles and am a covert from hiking boots.
Nice videos, thank You. If shoelaces are too smooth and there is not enough grip to make a good knot, it can help if the lace surface is made rough a bit. Fold a piece of sandpaper and pull the lace between few times.
Something I just tried and can vouch for - The Nike hiking shoes I picked up were a bit too small in the toe box. I pulled the laces up tight, pushed plastic bread bags into the shoes, stood the shoes up on the toes, filled the bags with water, and it being the coldest Canada's been in a number of years, put the shoes outside, standing up on the toes, to freeze. Did a freeze/thaw cycle four times, and the toe boxes are definitely looser.
I got a pair of Eddie Bauer last year and love them! I've hiked a hundred miles or so in them so far and no complaints.

I have a pair of Topo Ultraventures with about 450 miles of training and racing on them and they held up fantastic. Bought another pair, as well as some Terraventures. Looking forward to using the Terras as my main hiking shoe and I will probably use them for shorter races as well.
I've always had problems with my big toenails as well. Went to see a podiatrist and apparently I have an issue with intoeing! I ended up getting the sides of my toenails "killed" so I no longer have to worry about ingrowns and it was the best decision I've ever made (in addition to getting custom insoles and wide shoes) now i have a lot less foot pain, and I'm less prone to blisters as well
Both my daughters had that procedure done as well and have never had an issue with ingrown toenails since.

Jessica, your product reviews are great because of the clear methodical way you present......but I don't think I've ever watched for the products...its the advice that you give and the experience you impart that is invaluable to us. Best of all though are the 'Wanders' and I hope we can see you on a through hike again soon. My favourite was Camino.
I know there is a Plethora of options out there. But I think the Oboz Bridger is an awesome choice! Great grip on all terrain, and a nice solid footbed for those very Rocky trails.
I have Altra Superior 4s, and one thing I love about them is that the mesh is very fine. Great for Michigan, keeps the sand out. I also like minimal tread that doesn’t hold dirt.
Interesting. I was shopping for new hiking shoes and so was excited to see what you had to say. Women I've hiked with have also recommended Altra Lone Peak and since I respect your opinion and know that they hike the same dusty, rocky trails I do here in Joshua Tree NP and surrounding area, when my broken knee heals, I'll grab a pair. Maybe I'll look now just in case the sale is still on. So thanks! I'm not too proud to change the laces when I get a pair of those slippery round ones! I hate those!!!
I used to always carry 2 pairs of shoes and extra socks.. course, I always had a heavy pack.lol. But hear me out. Your foot health is Paramount when on long hikes.a couple extra ounces or pounds are less noticable when you feel good . Cross the water with the fast dry shoes, put dry on. Hang shoes outside of pack to dry. You will make up the time changing shoes, with nice dry stuff on....my opinion of course, but we tested it on the trail. Greatly appreciate your videos, Dixie. You are definitely a beast on the trail. :)
Make sure you carry pepper spray on the Florida Trail. There is one area with several aggressive dogs that Daisy had to spray when they went to bite her legs. I think another hiker was bitten by the dogs before her. After that area, more dogs came running out but they were friendly. John from MI

I recommend the Altra Superior for the Florida Trail. They're perfect for a road/trail hybrid when the trail is mild the way that the FL trail is.

I've gone through 4 pairs of Lone Peaks and really like the wide toe box and slipper like feel with Prostep Pinnacle insoles. Once I realized the stock insoles were worthless and replaced them I was very happy. Treads wear out too quick and not the best on wet rocks but I can live with that to have comfortable feet.
I got the Astral mesh a few months ago. Being designed for water sports they drain and dry very quickly and have good grip on the rocky trails I frequent. The tread does hold mud though. Best part is they are impregnated with silver and are the first shoes that haven’t smelled to high heaven after wearing for 2 weeks

I encountered a lot of stream crossings in the Cohutta Wilderness, but almost none in the GA/NC AT. Then again lots of rain in summer on AT. Same as Dixie, I need a wide toe box, also like the cushioning around the ankles due to ankle spurs. Leaning toward Topo Athletic Terraventure, but want to try Altra also.
I gave Altra a go after your review a while back, I’m using the Altra Torrin. Super lightweight and that wide toe which is really comfy but I use them in combo with a stiffer pair of Haglofs. Around Scotland where I’m doing all my walking this combination works great.
Good video and great shoe. You could try the new updates as Terraventure 3 of Topo.
I wore the Topo terraventure 2 for my entire thru hike of the AT in 2019. Loved them. They are tighter in the heal than altras...which my heal slipped out of despite lacing tricks. I did swap them out every 350 miles. 👍🏼
With 366 miles of road walk on the FT I would go with the shoe that makes road walks more comfortable. i would also recommend getting an inexpensive pair of water shoes for the swamps. Happy trails
Good information.
I have a way of tying shoes that a learned a long time ago from an outdoors store that works better than just double tying. Hard to describe in words, but first I double lace the last knot before the actual knot tying begins. The part of the lace that lays on the tongue. That holds it good and snug while I get the loops ready. You basically tie the knot like you normally would but you take the loop that goes around the standing line twice instead of once. You snug it up just like a regular tie job. It rarely comes undone until your ready. And you simply pull one lace to untie.
I agree with you comments on Altra shoes. Great to hike in, but I tried wearing at work where I walk a lot and they really bothered my feet on regular flooring. Forest great. Roads and flooring not so good.
I LOVE the Altra Paradigms for hard concrete or hard surfaces. I use them in retail and that hard floor does not get the best of my body when wearing the Paradigms.
I have not tried the Altra Olympus yet.
The Altra Lone Peaks are a must for me to always have. They do dry out fast and grip on any surface I am on whether dirt or concrete.
I did find out that the new Lone Peak 5's have a softer cushion rather than a dense cushion.
I prefer a dense cushion on my Lone Peaks but the All Weather mid Lone Peaks have that dense cushion that I love.
The dense cushion lasts longer than pillowy cushions.
ALTRA really needs to have a Lone Peak shoe with 30mm of dense cushion to handle hard surfaces just as much as the trail.
I even did yard work in my Lone Peaks and I did not slip around much in the mud while cutting super tall weeds off trees and from the ground. They do it all.
I know that you (Dixie) do not like the Altra Timp2s...but I wear those. I find that they have way more cushion than the Lone Peaks -which is a nice balance for occasional road walks. They still have the zero drop as well. I know that the toe box is slightly narrower, but so far, that hasn’t been an issue for me.

I've loved my Altra Timp's for reduced blisters, quick drying, wide toe box and arch support on Sierra Nevada trails. Unfortunately they fall apart fast (not much scree rock exposure for me) and customer service has replaced them for free.
I love my Topo Terraventure 2’s! Slightly wider than Lone Peak in the ball of foot area which I really like. I’ve got a full year out of them. Looking forward to the 3rd version coming out this year. Might try the LP5 though in the meantime, just don’t like how squishy the sole is
Dixie, I think I can help you with your knots. If the bow points front to back you have tied a granny know. If it crosses your foot it is the square knot that you want. Simply change which lace goes over the top when you make your overhand knot to start tying your shoe and your know should stay tight much better. I used to teach rope rescue and knots. Enjoy the trails!!!
OMG! I know about granny knots but never thought of it applying to shoelaces. Just checked, and my decades-long tying habit yields a square knot. Phew.

Previously, over many years, I've only walked in waterproof boots or shoes but I am thinking of buying a pair of Altras or the topo terraventure for multi-day walking.
As I'm in the UK and we get more than our fair share of rain do both shoes dry out reasonably quickly? I've heard the topos can take some time to dry properly and I don't mind getting wet feet but if they are still wet the following morning it might be a bit unpleasant starting the day with wet shoes.

I've been looking forward to your shoe review especially your thoughts on the Innov-8 I have tried on a few pairs but they were way too narrow out of the box. I have small girl feet but I need that room to splay especially when I'm backpacking.
Double wrap your shoe laces. Keeps them from coming untied. Works similar to a taut-line hitch.
I keep the laces and inserts from all of my old Altras. If I throw a shoes away I always keep the removable parts
After 2 pairs od Lone Peaks, just switched to Topo Terraventures. Only have about 50 miles on them, but loving them so far.
Been a Lone Peak fan for years now. Considering bumping to the Timp with the next pair to try them out. It's like a Lone Peak with a taller stack (more cushion).

I have a confession to make. This past Fall I needed to buy a pair of sneakers while on an impromptu trip trip so I went to Walmart to get something cheap that would get me through the weekend. I bought a pair of Ozark Trail trail-runners because they looked better than the gym shoes on the shelf & were under $20 bucks. Low & behold they were the most comfortable trail-runners I've ever worn. Took me by total surprise. I wore them for several weeks until winter hit & they didn't fall apart like I expected, so I'll take them on some hikes this spring to see how long they last.
I started using Altra Olympus 3.5 to help with knees. I love the Lone Peaks also, I have been using them for 3 years now😊
My puppies don't bark with Altra.
I wear lone peaks in the uk for walking and trail runs. Agree with comments. Tried the superior 3 or 3.5 and toe went through material. Gone back to lone peaks. Would like more aggressive grip and longer lasting sole.. They wear quickly compared to innov8. Will try a replacement sole on current lone peaks for £42 here in the uk, as the uppers and mid is OK.

Heard good things about the Topos and bought a pair in my usual hiking shoe size (a full size bigger than my normal shoe size). They were incredibly small and tight. I would have had to buy them about 1.5 sizes bigger for them to fit. Not sure if I got a weird pair but I was very disappointed. I'm sticking with the Altra Lone Peak.
I just bought the new Altra Lone Peak 5.0 this week and think I’m going to love them. I was a fan of the prior Temp 1.5 before they messed it up with the 2.0. The new Lone Peaks seem much more similar to those old Temps. They have more cushion than the prior 4.5 and they also now offer a wide width on the blue color version. This new round also seems to be made a little more durable as well. Excited to put some miles on them. Hope Dixie tries them out to see what she thinks.
Also, the Lone Peak 5.0 has drain holes in the toe box for quicker water displacement. REI has these shoes so expect they are out other places as well.
I wore a pair of LP 5.0s on the AT for 150 miles last spring after tossing my Superiors at the NOC. They were great. Unfortunately I had to come home from Hot Springs to handle some things and never got back on trail. The 5.0s have addressed the durability issues, but, unfortunately, the heel tread is gone at this point and the heel liner, as usual, has worn out and rolled up. They are my outdoor slippers around the house now. I would say that I got a total of probably 400 miles out of them as an everyday shoe before I retired them.
Glad to hear you're doing the FT! More road walk this year due to flooding and covid restrictions. Lots of trail angel shuttles in spots where needed.youre getting a late start if youre doing now, bugs will be bad with the warmer weather. Lots of "puddly" to downright mucky knee deep spots, so quickdrying is a must. Some carry an extra pair for that reason. Lots of support down here for you. Love what you do, keep it up as long as you can!
Have you ever tried Keen shoes? I got mine in Gatlinburg, TN. They are the first hiking shoes that I have had and I'm using them as my everyday shoes because I have problems with my feet hurting and some other things. These shoes have made a big difference, as soon as I put them on, my feet actually felt better.

Flat shoelaces stay tied better like the ones that come with Alras and Topos. I wish they made those red Lone Peaks Dixie started out with. I love the retro look. I'm still fire road hiking in a pair of Lone Peak 4.0 that have no tread left on them :o) (Probably about 700 miles) I think they keep my feet tough till I hit the PCT this summer with new shoes. I agree the Topos are great, They feel like a Lone Peak to me. I would buy more of them especially for rocky trails like the High Sierras. I also agree they have no styling that recommends them. I pretty much agree with everything you said here . . . I'm going to try the Topos from the California border to Canada and see how long they last. I did the Sierra section last year so wont repeat it this year.
Round laces are just nonsense, coming open all the time. Can't be designed with any practical hiking background.
I use to be a huge fan Merrell and also the Teva brand. They were more of a hiking shoe. But for the last 9 months I have been wearing La Sport Iva Mutants which are a true trail runner and I love them. I would recommend the brand
I switched out the laces on my Inov8 G 260s for Lock Laces. I've never had an issue with my socks sliding down and the toe box feels good to me (granted, I have really tiny feet. I'm a male, 5'7, and I wear a US size 7 for everyday wear, but my Inov8s are a US size 8). I've got about 100 miles worth of shakedown hikes and everything seems to be holding up just fine. I will be starting the AT NOBO with these shoes on 02/25/2021. I'd recommend Inov8, but I'm well aware that they are not for everyone. Happy hiking, y'all!
La Sportiva Bushido II for me. A bit narrower last, so I had to buy a size larger, but through half a dozen pairs they've been great. I pair with Sole Medium Performance insoles.

On the road walking point, I once got my car stuck in a patch of snow while driving up above Kernville near the PCT.. it was pretty late, so I slept the night and then walked down to the fire station in town to get some help freeing it (they wonderfully obliged and everything worked out great). Looking up the distance blows my mind every time because it's way longer than I remembered, but it felt like it was nothing because I had some big thick-soled hiking boots. I normally wear zero-drop footwear like Vibram 5-fingers and Luna sandals, but I happened to have some big ole boots with me and they were a lifesaver. Boots like those should be called road boots, not hiking boots.
Thank you for this great information Dixie. I don't do a lot of hiking, but more walks on the road. I need a wide toe box, so I'm thinking the Topo's may work for me. Do you have any recommendations for women on sizing? Or do you recommend the men's for women?

I had a pair of Altra zero drop shoes, but I was experiencing knee pain, so I got rid of them. May have been a mistake, I think it was the pistol squats I was doing.
I use an older pair of La Sportiva Bushidos as a hiking/approach shoe. I also have a pair of Teva hiking sandals, I love them, but the velcro enclosures don't grip well. Yes, I'll buy another pair.

What's needed is an Altra model where you can attach a sole enhancement for road walks, or a full sole swap-out. Then just wear the base unit plus whichever sole is suitable for the conditions.
That's the heaviest part of the shoe. The upper is only about 1 oz. If you want to have that, you could just carry a pair of Lone Peaks and a pair of Timps, or a pair of Olympus and a pair of Lone Peaks. The weight and bulk would be almost identical to what you're wanting.
@@backpacker3421 Then I guess some smart engineer(s) have a great opportunity to figure out how to do it. Saying you "can't" do something is easy. Doing it anyway is progress. You know, kinda how people used to think you can't go faster than a few dozen mph in a train or a woman's uterus will fly out. Or how space launches are just too complicated & expensive for commercial enterprises. So, I prefer to propose what _might_ be and look forward to when it _will be_ .

May I suggest that you try out some waterproof socks on the Florida Trail? Being that it is a swamp I can imagine that the trail will be wetter than most. The two brands that I know about are Randy Sun and Seal Skinz. I haven't hiked in mine for more than a couple of overnight trips so far, but I'd like to see someone use them on a thru-hike. My personal concern is that they collect condensation and sweat on the inside over time and would like to see how that affects the formation of blisters and such. I think some sock liners would help with their breathability as well. They also don't dry nearly as well as other socks if they do get wet on the inside and can be a lot stiffer than other socks, so be forewarned. They do work, and to dry the inside they have to be flipped inside out. Also, Seal Skinz makes actual waterproof gloves, so you can give those a try as well.
I am a big fan of my timp. 4.5 but I recently dropped some hard cash on the altra Olympus, and they are amazing. They feel more sturdy also so I hear they last longer too.
My last pair of Altra's had self-untying laces. Cheaper design than their old laces.
I love the LonePeaks.. but hey... I could be convinced to try a different shoe- if the toe box is wide enough. RollTide :)

Im enjoying the Salomon speedcross 5 for winter muddy trails. I can't decide on a road to trail shoe.
We humans (mammals really) remember pain. One I remember as a child was dreading going to the shoe store as adults decided what I would wear, and the pain for a week or more as my parents insisted "you just have to break them in". So ever since I purchased my own shoes, I have always insisted on space for my toes to move.
