Man with every upload it just becomes more and more clear to me that, insofar as writing and delivering reviews, you're the best of anitube. Really enjoyed the video and I think it should help me convince a few friends to finally try this show out. Hoping the best for you Aaox.
The thing is "Violence is bad" isn't really the the main theme of Vinland Saga. Violence being bad is just assumed as truth by the narrative. The main theme is what can and should be done to limit violence. Also my favorite story about the real Thorkell is how according to Anglo-Saxon lore he was heartbroken by the death of a bishop of Canterbury who was murdered by vikings and carried his body all the way to London where he buried him and then switched sides from Denmark to England. Surprisingly tender for a Jomsviking warlord who lived 1000 years ago, and I think this softer side occasionally shows up in his character in Vinland Saga. Also, also Yukimura has said that Fist of the North Star was his favorite manga growing up because he loved the paradox of kind and gentle Kenshiro being absurdly good at killing people. His other favorite thing was Vicky the Viking.
I love how Askeladd is obviously filled with regret throughout the show for what he did to Thors. Even that despicable pile of human waste feels guilty for his own actions against such a magnificent man.
Absolutely; they really do an incredible job telling you how he feels without saying a single word. One of the most powerful moments in the show for me was him asking Thors to lead his band because he knew that was the only way Thors would leave alive, and it's never directly said at all. His characterisation is nothing short of impressive, to say the least.
@@Aaox using a piece from Violet Evergarden to illustrate your points about a series that condemns violence? that's some S-Tier thematic cross-over right there
Come for the Monster Girl Quest review. Stay for the soothing level voice and dry British snark. You're the only anime reviewer I'll actually go out and watch recommendations from. Loved Two Girls One Kettenkrad and Holes 2: A Really Big One. I hope someday Susan lets your channel get the recognition it deserves.
Aaox I really liked that you mentioned the contrast between mangakas' pacifism and history. PS: are you planing to revisit some older anime or games? Also (just a side note) the outro transition to music was a bit more jarring than normally.
I'd love to revisit some older anime or games for sure, especially since we're in the kind of dead-period mid-season where there's nothing new to review on the anime side. Sorry if the outro transition was a bit more abrupt than usual; I actually ad-libbed the entire ending segment because I thought it might be nice to advertise my Twitch since I'm starting to stream there now, so the intended ending had to be cut up a bit.
That’s one of the weird things with the anime's shoehorned-in filler padding and jumbling of events in the last couple episodes. They needed something for Thorfinn to do to kill time before getting him back to where he ends up in the actual story. Add that to them trying to prematurely start his development over the course of those episodes and you get this mess where the BIRD FLYING AWAY makes him go back to Askeladd and abandon Leif. Anyway, in the manga he's just sitting outside the hall from the start of the entire ceremony until shit hits the fan, because he doesn't care for the politics, and because he never gets imprisoned and meets Leif again. And he didn't get imprisoned because 1.)his fight with Askeladd was like a week ago instead of the night before (and the fight was in Gainsborough instead of York because that was Thorfinn's agreed upon reward for protecting Canute from Wales up to that point) and 2.)Thorfinn didn't get completely dejected after losing because 3.) Askeladd didn't fully bluntly exposit that he's just been using and stringing Thorfinn along (not that that should really upset Thorfinn that much, but whatever), just saying how he got his revenge in 2 years and how Thorfinn's shit at it for taking over a decade. Basically, you know how Thorfinn reacted to losing to Askeladd in the anime? How he completely lost it? That's more or less actually how he reacts to Askeladd dying in the manga. So...they kinda jumped the gun for his mental state and character development there, with 2 WHOLE episodes to go.
....but the end of season 1 isn’t the end? It is a cliffhanger ending and ends that way for a reason. It isn’t meant to wrap anything up. Just like Thorfinn feels at the end, it is empty and leaves you with a “what next?”
Well After rewatching your Patema Inverted review followed by your kimono friends review and not knowing how to give you our requests, or if you even do them, I figured I'd post this here. I'd really enjoy hearing your thoughts on the anime that nobody but me cares about with very happy overtones but extremely dark undertones known as "Humanity has Declined." It is a unique world that is fun to explore with the characters, and even if you don't end up doing a full video on it I'd still recommend giving it a watch. Edit: oh I guess I made a post 3 months ago with another request that I forgot about. Woops. I don't intend to spam you with requests and as long as my memory lasts I'll try to avoid it.
Not the best adaptation obviously, but still very much worth the watch. To say that Askeladd carries the show is an understatement. Truly one of the best character arcs in all of anime. As for the ending, its a very mixed bag. It is very sudden and anti-climatic in the overall plot sense, but boy is it VERY climatic in the Askeladd character arc sense so is still a great episode to look forward to.
Well, I cant't quite understand your point. If there's something that Vinland Saga succeeds without doubt, that is just being an adaptation. Yes, you can say that it's not the best anime in general (and, in any case, I would reply that, if not the best ever, it's a great anime nevertheless), but you cannot say that it's not the best adaptation: the 25 episodes of Vinland Saga are almost a 1:1 copy of the first 54 chapters of the manga, with minimal and for the most part unnoteworthy changes. Yes, one could argue that being faithful to the original material is not enough to define a good adaptation, but I believe that in this case big changes were not at all needed, right? I found this anime to be almost perfect from all points of view. Visually it's incredible, even given some poor use of CGI which is not in itself disastrous but stands out in negative compared to the wonderful 2D animation. The soundtrack is of the highest level, the narration has the right timing and the right modalities. Vinland saga is just a great anime ... and a perfect adaptation (I just can't understand how the opposite can be said). The value of this anime as an adaptation is revealed precisely in this matter of the "abrupt ending", on which I think this review dwells way too much. Don't get me wrong, I overall agree whith what is stated in the video, but the review really gives too much emphasis to this aspect, really, it's not such a big problem and it didn't bother me all this much. The ending seems abruptedly pulled because it does not offer a fulfillment to the main character's arc, Thorfinn. But in the original story, the season finale was never supposed to be the point where Thorfinn's story could benefit some sense of fulfillment. To achive that, the authors should have take something from very onward in the manga, or make something up for themselves. Instead, in the adaptation they decided to stay faithful still, wanting to continue to follow the spirit of the original material (in short, it is clear that even the authors themselves hope for a second season). So, in my opinion, the review is incredibly wrong in defining "defect" something that is clearly desired by the authors in the sake of a larger design.
It's a cliffhanger referencing stuff that, as of the time of writing, is manga-only, with no immediate promise of a season two. It was a very good way to end it, given what they were working with, but only if you actually know what they're showing you. For someone who hasn't read the manga, that sequence is just going to leave them confused.
I was afraid after I found your channel you were going to stop posting videos, it's happened too many times before. You have definitely convinced me though, this is going to be watched. Thanks for the review And you probably don't take requests but Cross Ange is quite the watch as well with a main character that you are probably not supposed to like if you're into that sort of thing Anyway keep up the good work and I look forward to your next video
