That was probably the last concise, memorable phrase of the whole interview. I say probably because I gave up after 10 minutes. I hope others will have found subtlety and precision in the rich vocabulary, for me it obscured most of his message.
VDP gave that 3-string layers for intonation-fix advice to our mutual violinist friend before she played on one of my tracks. the results came out great! VDP is a very helpful sage in Los Angeles.
Just fantastic. Thank you to Samuel for this, and to Van Dyke for sparing so much of his time and, as always, giving such interesting and thoughtful answers. I love how he can so clearly enunciate complex ideas, even for a non musician like me. Lovely to spend my morning with Mr. Parks in his home, I'd happily listen to him all day!
Thank you Andrew. I just finished all your interviews with the Magic Band survivors. Sounds like you’ve unearthed all the secret savants of the Warner Brothers Records label.
Van Dyke Parks has been a hero of mine since I noticed his name on my 45s, back in the '60s (Harpers Bizarre, The Beach Boys' "Heroes And Villains", The Beau Brummels, The Mojo Men...) and then the cuts that were included on the Warner/Reprise samplers. I've tried diligently to collect everything I could find with his name on it. I can't believe I missed this discussion until now. The Gaby Moreno collaboration has been in heavy rotation since I first heard it. Gorgeous!@@samuel_andreyev
Van Dyke is very intelligent ! I spent a night in 1977 drinking Tequila and listening to his ideas till dawn .. Left a burning and lasting impression on my mind . Really cool and hip cat ! Thanx Ya'll >>>> J D
I will goahead and say it! Van Dyke Parks is a "Genius" and I would say he is a musical professor! I love Van Dyke Parks, but perhaps his greatest work with Brian Wilson just does it for me! THank you for this brilliant interview, It mad me "SMILE" ;)
Fascinating interview. Could listen to him all day. Many years ago a work colleague here in England loaned me his CD of “Discover America “ I had heard of VDP but only as a lyric writer with Brian Wilson. I knew nothing about his solo recordings. That album really knocked me out, fantastic songs and arrangements. Thanks for putting this piece out there Sam. I am currently working my way through the Beefheart sidemen interviews. Great stuff. Keep up the good work!
I should definitely get into Van Dyke Park sometime. I know friends who are really into him. I’m familiar with Song Cycle and his works with Brian Wilson. But my knowledge about him is very short. But my interest on Dyke peaked when I heard his arrangements on Joanna Newsom’s sophomore album. Ys is one of my favorite albums. So I’m not expecting anything bad from him I can already see these interviews being a main attraction to the channel. I never expected them before subscribing. But I’ve learned a lot from these videos. As always, keep up the great work.
Fantastic conversation! I could listen to Van Dyke Parks using expressions such as "it's just a google away" all day long. I visited Strasbourg because I live in Luxembourg right now, sadly I didn't get to hear the dialect...
Wow! That was the most inspiring conversation I've ever heard. Be sure that I will be sharing this with every artist I know. Lastly, I'm very envious that you have been privy to such knowledge.
What Van Dyke is saying about music is that it has to work like all languages work. Poets use the same words as the rest of us, but they have the ability to turn it into poetry. Composers ( at least accessible composers) do the same thing with music.
The real vernacular form of music is pop music but it wields enormous power for good or ill because of it's accessibility as it can shape the dreams of new and upcoming generations.
Like Van Dyke, as I've gotten older and my voice weaker, I've grown much more interested in recitative. It's also been interesting to listen to a great singer like Bryan Ferry cope with the effects of age on his voice.
He is a model of graciousness and generosity, traits that are unfortunately very rare in the music industry. And he actually takes the time to respond to queries from young admirers / composers. If only more people were that 'annoying'.
+Samuel Andreyev you're pretty "annoying" yourself, Samuel. All of the amazing stuff you do for us and the interesting people you interview, you're right up there with him.
_Being busy is a sign of inefficiency._
I'm hooked.

"It didn't bother me that I had an insufficient personality for the public gaze" what a humble guy
And this is a highly accomplished artist, revered by some of the greatest musical icons of our time. He has very little to be humble about.
His arrangements on the Ys album are so amazing.
One of the best interviews! And knowing that he sang Pierrot Lunaire as a kid, I can definitely hear an element of cabaret/Pierrot in Song Cycle.
Wow, didn't expect this. Used to listen to him all the time in High School.
VDP gave that 3-string layers for intonation-fix advice to our mutual violinist friend before she played on one of my tracks. the results came out great! VDP is a very helpful sage in Los Angeles.
Man, you really struggled to get a word out of him XD
Such a fascinating interview, thanks for sharing it

Wow, legend
I'm four years late but that was wonderful! What an interesting and charming man is Van Dyke Parks.
You're not late, this interview has a long life ahead of it still ;)
@@samuel_andreyev I'm catching up with a number of them. Thanks!

VAN DYKE PARKS WAS ON YS?! no wonder that albums so amazing.
Yeah, he did all of the strings. I think Newsom recorded all of the harp and vocals, and then Parks wrote the strings around that.
Joanna Newsom's Ys is where I first heard of Van Dyke Parks. I've been meaning to diver deeper into his music.
Silverchair's Diorama 💪🏻
I really enjoyed this interview - he is such an interesting person, so giving of his experiences and his lifetime of knowledge. Thanks Samuel!
Love Mr. Parks and his music. Thank you for this helpful and entertaining interview.
This is gold dust. Thank you Sam and Van!
Deeply appreciate this thoughtful interview with this brilliant man--thank you.
How did I miss this until now?? Incredible! Thank you.
Great choice of interviewee here Sam. Really enjoy your videos.
I am really thankful for this
Me too. It was a delight talking to Van Dyke Parks. Thanks for your comment.
@@samuel_andreyev how did u secure an interview with him
Great stuff. Always fascinating and inspiring to get an insight into an older master who has lived an entire life of creativity.
fantastic interview!

This is fantastic.

Being a professor is a way to contribute and a way to learn. Do you also serve in other ways where you live? I love your channel!
Thanks -- nice to hear from you!
36:52 "Not even a fucking triad" LOL So _that_ was Mork & Mindy?
Great interview.
Good stuff. Thank you for sharing.
That was great...thanks
This is superb ...
Thank you
A transcendent talent.

any diorama or young modern fans on here? it would have been interesting to hear a discussion on his work with silverchair in the 2000s.
Like Van Dyke, as I've gotten older and my voice weaker, I've grown much more interested in recitative. It's also been interesting to listen to a great singer like Bryan Ferry cope with the effects of age on his voice.
17:28-17:29
He hates the word genius...but...
You should have Robert Gjerdingen on for an interview.
Matthew Hume Why? Who's that?
This guy is like if colonel sanders had an acid psychosis and thought he was a thesaurus
jump is wonderful , discover america , song cycle , clang of the yankee reaper , the list goes on.
I want to brag a bit about when I was a brunette ha!
Excellent
No talk about The Smile Sessions?
No, he's been asked about that 10,000 times already.
@@samuel_andreyev Wish he would talk about his involvement with the film, Popeye where he worked with the late Harry Nilsson.
I would not want this guy as a neighbor. Turns a simple interview into a complicated drawn out over verbiaged bender
funny how Trout Mask Replica fans are SMILE fans :-) too bad syd barret died ( r stevie moore though.. )
Didn't you use a plastic straw there Van. 🙂
Van Dyke's preferred drummer: Jim Keltner...
"There is no money for a musician in the music budget". So why ask for one?
