The random guy on UA-cam, who likely wasn’t even a sperm cell when these events happened, knows more than the guy who directly experienced them. Curious.

    3:08 "being" a genius?
Does Van Dyke ever show respect to Brian's music? Seems like Brian is always just a pop star to Van Dyke, never a respectable composer in his own right. I would wish a musician of Van Dyke's abilities would be able to admire the inimitable songwriting talent of '65-7 Brian.

I remember him saying Pet Sounds was the only thing interesting coming out in american music at the time so I guess he respected him on a musical level

Van Dyke is very cognizant of Brian being the better arranger and producer, there is no question... maybe he doesn't respect Brian that much as a person (and he was traumatized by the whole ordeal), but the record is there through the years, lots of quotes where he basically hints that Brian is the GOAT

@@ohpliisCan you share any links to where he is praising Brian? Being a fan of both (especially Brian), would love to read about it

@@thebournefutility8302 no, I can't remember. you'll just have to look up interviews... most in-depth interviews with VDP will mention brian at some point. certainly his opinion was that Brian at his peak, before mental illness took around that time, was the most plugged-in person in music

He literally arranged a “Brian Wilson Suite” in the 90’s that he conducted with a group to open up for Brian’s shows while he promoted the pet sounds 1996 stereo re-release album. Van Dyke’s opening show consisted of Brian’s greatest works, including deep cuts like “when I grow up to be a man” or what have you from the early days. Van Dyke and Brian are not only colleagues, collaborators, and coconspirators, but they were also friends, and Van Dyke has clearly shown in his own way that he does in fact respect Brian and Brian’s genius works! And i don’t think he had truly been “traumatized” by Brian’s buffoonery, but instead initially turned off, disgusted, or felt slightly disrespected, but later came to understand that it was clearly a sign of his at the time increasing mental illness, and was able to put it behind him once Brian had decades to recover in time to work on things like orange crate art, and Brian Wilson Presents Smile. During which the whole time Van dyke was there cheering Brian on. Van dyke isn’t going to come out and say in plain English just exactly what he thinks of Brian or anything for that matter. He’s just going attempt to describe important things that he took away or that inspired him to do the next thing in his career. It’s never so black and white
