- [Hi-Fi Mono] The composer/arranger leads the house band, and a slew of other musicians for this second tune performed on this occasion.
Mr. Parks relates a very entertaining tale involving the music industry of yore, and the happenstance of working with Little Feat, at that time.
The house band features: Hiram Bullock on guitar; Don Alias on percussion; Philippe Saisse on keyboards; Tom Barney on bass; and Omar Hakim on drums.
Osamu Kitajima performs on the koto. I believe that is Rosemary Butler and Lani Groves, among the backing vocalists. The male vocalist I do not recognize, and he is not credited at the end of this particular episode....
Hal Willner was the creative genius behind this special program.
People don't know what they're missing when they pass over this Van Dyke Parks work.
@inextinguishablemoltenbloodedwhat are you talking about?
Actually, I think I know what you’re referring to. That wacko theory that military and intelligence elites encouraged their talented off-work to infiltrate popular culture.
Beautiful sounds EXACTLY Like the album what a freaking god dude. Beautiful singer.
“I heard her say with a sigh a soldier may never. Say. Die. “
too good
'A neon moon lolliop glows'....God --just gorgeous.
One of my favorite albums. Love the Cut Cowboy. Incredible Imagery
I believe the anecdote about the seven silhouettes in the control room with the suitcase of cash would be the beginning of his involvement with recording Happy End's final record
Brilliant! Brings forward memories I didn't know I had.
That's Osamu Kitajima playing the koto, if you're interested in crediting him in the description! He played on the record Tokyo Rose too!
Thanks for uploading these -- great videos
Thank you very much for sharing that information! Happy to know that some are enjoying the clips, after all :) Your note of thanks is much appreciated.
When's the last time you saw pop music this sophisticated on live TV? I miss the old days.
Really cool caliber of talented music acts.
even when it was happening. it wasn't all that often. Parks, Newman, Wilson, Simon, Mitchell... anybody else? I genuinely don't know (as far as popular acts go I mean). Most popular acts have always either been a little too simple or a little too obscure. On rare occasion someone crosses over. Not even sure if Parks really did though, he might just have had a couple of (very well deserved) lucky moments.
@@nathanreiber6819 I recall it a bit differently: Manhattan Transfer, Jimmy Webb, Harry Nilsson, Poco, Michael McDonald, Todd Rundgren, Laura Nyro, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Stevie Wonder, Kenny Loggins (solo esp.), CSN, Kate Bush, McCartney, Ronstadt, Rickie Lee Jones, The Roches, Chicago, Phoebe Snow, Tom Waits, Ambrosia, Eric Carmen, Left Banke, The Association, Modern Folk Quartet, Marvin Gaye, Dan Hicks, Judee Sill, Carole King, Boz Skaggs, Carpenters, Matt Bianco, John Stewart, Joe Jackson, Toto, Orleans, Four Freshmen, Dylan, Gram Parsons, etc, etc. I could go on...
Serious musicians, all. There was always great music craftsmanship in the mix -- with major label deals -- and on TV. I don't think you can say that any longer. Fountains of Wayne and Lake Street Dive were the last pop bands who did it for me. Lemon Twigs have great potential.
@@Hugo_Hackenbush I suppose would include Harry in there, maybe Steely Dan, and if we consider him pop, george benson?
It seems the lists a lot longer potentially
@@nathanreiber6819 Definitely Steely Dan (can't believe I skipped one of my faves). Lots more possible. Fagen's solo albums are brilliant, also China Crisis, produced by Becker.
Fantastico! We want more Van Dyke Parks!
I recognize his voice from Harold and the Purple Crayon!
He does talk like a poet!
I’m pretty sure the motif and core part of the melody was reused for Orange Crate Art
well that's what we get for not listening to it the first time. It's great.
Wow, and Hiram too.
Is that Hiram Bullock, the bass player?
Perfect
Please release this one DVD. I taped is VHS, but I want something a little more durable.
As he got older, Van Dyke actually became better looking. Is it wrong to say he looks ‘cute’ here. I mean ‘cute’ as in boyish. Boyish yet with a dapper air- and that’s not a combination you often see.
Kudos to Sanborn, who in my jazz snob days I dismissed as a commercial whore, for presenting such an array of great music on this show.
Did Sanborn pass away in the last couple of years?
Is that Hiram bullock?
Also 23

Que asco de música, cómo le puede gustar a alguien esto?
"Opinions are like assholes; everyone's got one."
@@whatsforafters7843 Así es, por esa razón hay gente que piensa que esta porquería es buena música.
