    I loved playing this march at circus tempo. It's a wonderful exciting march that really makes you feel good while playing it. Any of Fillmore's pieces gave the musicians a workout which made his marches so much fun to play as well as entertaining the audience.

    We played this at Central Michigan at the end of our set, and for some reason it just hit right. The reception by the audience was supercharged. We were the lowest band in the system (Symphonic? Concert? I never knew how those names were ranked. But we were definitely not the wind ensemble.), and our conductor (Jack Saunders) was even surprised by the response. It just struck a chord.

    I don't ever recall hearing this played as a "screamer" like some of Karl King's marches. Usually it's at the tempo used here. It's much better when you can distinctly hear ALL the parts. I remember playing it this way when I was in the school band.

    Yeah, it's supposed to be around 150-160. If I recall correctly, it's what's referred to as a "circus march", and those kinds of marches MOVE ALONG, faster than what an average march would be. But, hey, if your band can't handle it at that speed, better to play it at a speed they CAN handle. Better to play it at a slower tempo and be all together and have a good sound than to play it as fast as it's written and sound horrible.

  • @ChristopherPettersen
    @ChristopherPettersen 9 років тому +2

    My one complaint is that the tempo seems to drag a bit. Really superb playing. The percussion do seem to overpower the winds at the trio, but that's a minor flaw. I LOVE Henry Fillmore. I send a message to upper winds at the first time of the trio with the countermelody, play louder. This is your chance to shine. The Trumpets and other brass instruments get the second time. It really bothers me that there is no stinger.

    • @coopersmith1799
      @coopersmith1799 9 років тому +1

      The reason the percussion overpower in the first trio is because when ever Fillmore preformed it while marching the percussion would play on the first trio, unlike when you here it in a concert hall.

    • @erikwallace207
      @erikwallace207 9 років тому

      Cooper Smith what's a stinger?

    • @ChristopherPettersen
      @ChristopherPettersen 9 років тому +1

      Erik Wallace The last note getting repeated at the end. Listen to the end of a march and if the last note gets repeated that's a stinger.
      Try stars and stripes
