I’m 14 years old, and in school I got entered for a sports competition I’m here 2 days before the competition for tips for javelin in school my pr was 37 metres after this video it was 46.4 metres. Big help! Thanks. 😊
Thank you very much coach, it really helps a lot, My sports day is coming in a few weeks and i am training hard at the moment and this will definitely help me to get the cutting edge
Thank you so much coach. I’m practicing this I hope I will win in my spots meet on the coming Monday. One again thank you soooooo much coach this really improves my throwing distance 😊😊☺️
Thanks Coach Scott! (Paul B - masters thrower from Georgia) This might be my new favorite video. The length of pull I'm getting better at. My rearward lean is improving, but balance on back foot can be challenging. Need to strengthen those ankle muscles and ligaments! But my nemesis has been proper hip rotation without torquing the (already injured) knee. Your tips here on "foot, knee, hip" are helpful, thanks as always for such grat content!
Dear Scott Halley ji, thx. a lot for sharing this valuable video on the Javeline Throw. I have learnt a lot from ur videos.UR PRAISE IS BEYOND DESCRIPTION AND PL. KEEP IT UP. STAY BLESSED ALWAYS. LOVE FROM PUNJAB.
Hi Coach Halley. I'm another older (68) starter. Used to play a lot of baseball and tennis. Never a very good pitcher, but not too bad at batting. Thanks for the great tips! I think I got the motion about right (from your guidance) and I can get it out there (about 70 feet or so), but not much further. I can throw an eight-pound medicine ball up to about 25 meters per second (50 miles per hour) with both hands over my head, so I THINK my strength is okay. But I can't seem to shake this pain in my shoulder when I throw the javelin -- and I think that's limiting my distance. I try to strengthen my shoulder (with those medicine ball throws and push-ups) but maybe that's aggravating that problem spot in the shoulder more than strengthening it. My shoulder isn't painful at all when I throw the medicine ball overhead, it's only when I throw the javelin, or even just hold it back in a ready position. I'm probably doing something wrong. Any general tips for strengthen the shoulder properly or in your opinion, should I just completely rest my shoulder until I feel NO pain at all? Thanks again for the great advice so far!
"Criteria for progression to the next level: No pain or stiffness when throwing No pain or stiffness after throwing All throwing should be effortless motion Every other day - may go to every 3rd day if fatigue/soreness persists Satisfactory response following 3 days of activity at each level." Okay. I'll stop until there is no pain in my shoulder.
Good distances! For technical adjustments, throw from your hip a bit more so there is less isolation of your shoulder and limit throwing intensity during your week. Pay attention to rest time. For strength and recovery, Knee Over Toes Guy on UA-cam has some great shoulder exercises for throwers. I would suggest visiting a physical therapist to get on a program though. Overhead med ball throws are good but in moderation because of potential impingement in the shoulders. Hopefully this helps! Best of luck in your recovery and progress!
Nice tosses at the end. You must have been really good in your competition days! I was a 200' high school thrower, but didn't really have much coaching. The kids training under you will definitely go far.
@@coachhalley And how! I’m 67 now. I still throw javelin and disc for recreation. 600 g javelin. 1 kg disus. I can’t even imagine how I picked up a 2 kg disc in my college days. What does speak of the one and a half kilo high school disc. That is a wrist killer for me now! So I throw the lighter weights and just have some fun! These bodies are not eternal.
Another great video. My coach in high school always said I needed to get “over” my block…but never had drills to practice the proper technique. Great drill progression, and explanation.
Beginner, 61 year old thrower here, just curious how far those throws were beginning at 10:35 in the video. Just trying to compare my standing throws. Great content BTW. Very helpful.
Thank u so much for this! I hsve a sports day event on the 14th July and its formd against forms and one of the sports are javelin which im thinking of doing. This will rlly help me
The farthest I’ve ever gone is only like 14m 😭I’ll give it to myself, I’ve only thrown a javelin twice, but I rly hope I get much farther from the actual tips ur giving
Sir I just started javelin throw. Javelin goes very far but falls flat and becomes foul sir I request you to make a video that javelin should not go flat sir thank you sir love from India 🇮🇳
Thanks for reaching out! I've got a couple videos on controlling the javelin. I'm sure I'll make another in the future with better video angles but for now, here is one of them: ua-cam.com/video/lHkmpKY0spU/v-deo.html
Great question! There are a lot of things to help a shoulder from getting sore. Pace yourself. Start off your throwing season gradually monitoring the volume and intensity. Do a proper cooldown and maintenance like ice/heat/stretching/exercise/therapy/massage/rest/etc. For throwing form, be efficient, use your lower body to generate initial force, use a big range of motion, throw relaxed and pay attention to how each throw feels so you can make appropriate adjustments.
About what was the distance on the last toss +/-? ...please don't forget about tips on how not to lose the point so we don't have belly flopped throws. TYVM
The last set of throws were over 200 feet. Maybe 210-215ft. Keep in mind they were 400gram javelins. I don’t like to beat myself up with the 800g javelins during demonstration throws. Hopefully I’ll get a video on throwing through the point soon. I have to recruit a camera person first…
just got asked to do javelin in a competition and i am definitely not the best at it, i have nothing to practice with throwing wise so im hoping that by practicing this sequence i can execute it decently on the day when it comes to actually throwing it. this may seem a stupid question but what would the proper grip be and when throwing it do you flick your wrist or anything? im desperate for answers to clear up these questions as im too nervous to ask anyone else 😂
I’m glad your going to give it a try. I love throwing the javelin! As far as the grip, I personally like using the Finnish grip. Here’s a video that may help: ua-cam.com/video/uiP9ad_YRfY/v-deo.html
Hey coach, asking something from biomechanics. I have noticed that main power comes from shoulder horizontal adduction ( chest stretch ) is this true ... If yes how much degree of adduction should an athelete perform. Any drill to improve that.
I’m not sure this is the place to address biomechanics questions as they can get a bit deep. In general I want to simplify the process for athletes and most coaches. The elastic properties of the muscles and connective tissue is super important but the throw uses the whole body in a sequence. The stretch of the chest is a big factor but it can depend on the thrower. I was never a big and muscular person so I relied on my speed and hips to power my throw. I’m curious what others would say on this topic. Anyone?
Sir can you please tell me how the right arm goes forward , the arm should be bend or not and the javelin should go straight or right / left , i have problem in using my elbow power instead of shoulder ..
I would recommend using the whole body to throw. The right sequence is important though. I have more videos on my channel that talk about the right arm but also about using your hips. Wishing you all the best!
In case you missed it. Here’s the video about the elbow: Improve your technique to avoid elbow pain from throwing ua-cam.com/video/MO_Z-Pcq6HE/v-deo.html
A competition javelin can be a practice javelin but generally a practice javelin is not a competition javelin. Competition javelins are higher quality, more finely tuned and more expensive. Some Thrower’s/coaches use older competition javelins for practice once they get to a certain condition. Depending on your throwing capabilities, you may want to save the nicer more expensive, higher quality, stiffer javelins for competition and train with the less expensive, beat up, or softer javelins. Hope that helps!
Hi I am 19 year old I have well strength but I can't throw far with my skills problem so after seeing this video may be my throwes gone far after learning this matter
I think it does more at higher levels. A 60m javelin thrower should be able to throw a 50 meter javelin farther than the rating but it’s flight and feel is significantly different than the same 60m thrower throwing an 80m javelin. To throw an 80m + rated javelin your form better be pretty efficient or your body will take a beating. One thing to consider in rating is if it will be used for competition or practice. A flexible javelin can be forgiving on a missed throw but it can also mess with your form if you get distracted by a javelin flapping through the air on every throw. I’m curious what other folks think.
good afternoon coach i realized that if i throw today i throw comfortably but tomorrow id be suffering from muscle fatigue and throw shorter distances how can i prevent this to continue throwing comfortably everytime am at training
Unfortunately our body doesn't put up with multiple days of throwing if your are pushing your limits. I recommend pacing yourself, paying attention to your body and spend time recovering. If you are training, alternate your activities, you don't need to throw every day to get better. Work on specific skills on alternating days or work on light intensity with higher volume. There are many ways to throw far besides throwing. Sleep, nutrition and moderation are your friend! Hopefully that helps! Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Not sure exactly but if I have not warmed up my body well enough, sometimes I get a similar result. Since I demonstrate throws when I coach, I’m careful not to throw far unless I’ve warmed up. Hope this helps.

Generally elbow issues are related to contracting your muscles to throw hard and not being loose. Also an elbow that’s at 90 degrees can be the issue. Also, the arm and elbow being too low behind the shoulders. It could be a number of things. Only guessing here since I have not seen you throw. Here’s a video about another athlete: ua-cam.com/video/MO_Z-Pcq6HE/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
