- It has taken me a while to make this post. I guess I didn't want to deal with the reality of the loss of a man whom I have called my Brother for the past 30 years. I dug out some photos from over the years we spent together. Weddings, Birthdays, Vacations, Upstate at the cabin etc. A big thank you to Nereida who is heartbroken as well, It was very hard for her to do between the tears but She put these photos to a song we recorded years ago with the help of Donnie Sumner who added his magic and background vocals. Sonny heard this song and it brought tears to his eyes, I am not much of a singer but he loved it, so I thought it was only fitting to use it. Our thoughts and Prayers are with the West family. Beautiful tribute! When Sonny spoke of Elvis, you could see his love for him along with the tears in his eyes.
Yet he wrote a book crapping on elvis and 2 weeks after it came out elvis died...yeah great friend ..they all bled elvis dry ..bunch of parasites the lot of them

Those aren't shooting stars, that's Elvis, Sonny and the guys doing fireworks wars in heaven. God bless you Sonny for caring the torch and for being a part of something so special. RIP.

He was a good honest man in this imperfect or incomplete world.
Sonny & Red West really loved & cared about Elvis.
They have criticised him by writing a book which had hurt Elvis however, they have done it to may be prevent Elvis to take more prescribed drugs which were hurting Elvis badly.
They have criticised Elvis to wake him up to help him even though it might have damaged Elvis's reputation & fame.

Never had the pleasure to meet Sonny. I can tell he was a good man. I'm a huge fan of elvis. These men that started out with elvis watch after him like a child.
I'm sure they had their hands full. They laughed, they cried, and they got mad at each other from time to time. They were human.
I positive they loved Elvis. And elvis loved them.
The guys that started with elvis gave up so much of their own lives to be there for elvis. Unless you've been in that situation, you have no idea how that works. You loose your own identity. The people you love, your family is all second to what your relationship is to elvis.
Rest in peace, Sonny. You all ways done what you needed to do.
Sonny was a handsome man !! Boy , wouldn't you like to have been there and seen that reunion with Elivs , Sonny , and Red ?!! I bet that was something special . wow hard to believe sonny is gone, I just met him in 2009 across the street from Graceland, he looked so good and strong, I don't care what anyone says he was and always will be a great man, and part of Elvis Presley forever, I am so glad I got a chance to meet him, his picture hangs in my office forever, RIP sonny until we meet again 🤘

Sonny and Red had a lot of responsibilities heaped on them taking care of Elvis they did the best they could but in the end the way it all ended up falls on Elvis's shoulders he was the boss......

I met sonny in 2004 for the 50 anniversary of that’s alright mummer , proper mans man top bloke .
He had something special. He truly loved Elvis, and his tears showed it.

Such sad news about the death of Ronnie Tutt. He "WAS THE BEST" and a GREAT friend to ELVIS R.I.P. Not many guys left now
ELVIS died 2 days before my 12th birthday and i have been a FAN ever since. He was my HERO. I know this is a STRONG word to use BUT ITS TRUE
I have been watching a lot of videos "behind the scenes" and the backstory of ELVIS. I must admit that i shed tears of sadness but i must also think happy thoughts.
This short video is a lovely tribute to Sonny. He was part of the "Memphis Mafia" who were a bunch of guys who always looked out for Elvis A group that knew each other a long time. Sonny must have had such a wonderful life and such great experiences during those years up until 1977. Yes in life there are the good times and the not so good times. I hope he did not have any regrets. He should not have any as he always did his best.
In the main lots of comments are touching and some are horrible. We as humans can be cruel but all i can say is "WE WERE NOT THERE".

Russ... This is very touching. Sonny and Red were clearly devastated when Elvis passed. Much undue criticism has been laid on these guys... It seemed fitting, if unfair that they passed so close together... To Hell with the haters... Blessings to your Family... Be Well...
Russ what a great tribute from the photos to the music! Sonny would be proud. Although I never met Sonny personally I will cherish a photo and autograph that Bob got me when you all visited him in Nashville. My thoughts are with you and your family on the loss of your friend. TCB.
I always liked Sonny. Despite what a lot of the fans have said and written, I do believe he and Red cared a great deal for Elvis.

Clifford Cowie red & Sonny has been with elvis for almost 15-20 years when they were fired. Elvis left town & had his father do it. They were given one weeks pay. Personally, I think elvis should’ve taken care of the matter himself and at least given them a severance package.

Elvis’ father fired Red, Sonny & Dave Hebler, the excuse was to cut back on expenses. With red & Sonny close to Elvis for almost 20 years, I can understand their bitterness & being somewhat vindictive. If someone fired me after 20 years as a cost cutting move & only gave me one week’s pay, I’d probably do the same thing too. Apparently, Red was somewhat confrontational when it came to Elvis’ addiction. Many fans have blamed the Memphis mafia for not helping Elvis. There’s only so much someone or some people can do. If I had a good friend self destructing, I couldn’t just sit back & not try to help. As I take issues with some of the accusations made in the book, such as Elvis using powdered cocaine, I’m sure the motive for the book wasn’t just to be vindictive but also to make money since they practically walked away empty handed after almost 20 years. There had been some friction between Red & Elvis going back to the wedding when Red was not chosen to be Elvis’ best man & not even invited to the wedding.

If Sonny and the rest had written EWH 6 months to a year before they were fired and still employed by Elvis I'd say ok maybe Sonny was out to open Elvis's eyes and help him. Sonny, Red, and David quickly came out with the book right after they were fired by Vernon. Huge Red Flag. They wrote this book for revenge! Plus I also believe they exaggerated and lied in the book to make themselves look good. Those three may they rest in peace while Elvis because of them will never rest in peace because of what these three have changed his image in history. Betrayal...
Even if Elvis was as bad as they said and maybe he was, Elvis never deserved this by these men he loved.
Obviously, the man was in pain and between a rock and a hard place if anyone in the media had found out.
Not so bad today but in those days it wasn't tolerated.

For those who are unfamiliar with Russ Howe I can attest that he is a priceless asset in the "world of Elvis Presley" who has put together many professional endeavors pertaining to Elvis that have benefited Elvis fans around the world and will continue to do so for generations to come. Not only is Russ Howe an incredible source pertaining to, and was a friend of, Elvis Presley but he is also an exceptional man - human being - etc. I can't imagine the loss that Russ Howe and Sonny West's family/friends/loved ones/etc are enduring. I pray for them. My grandfather told me, and I wasn't even 10 years old at the time, that in this world a man has his word. His name. And his reputation. And that after a man dies if he was 10 people that remember his name, his passions, his works, his endeavors, etc. that that man was blessed. Well Sonny West exceeds these criteria and....more. I remain saddened that my medical issues prevented me from attending the funeral of Sonny West. I just wanted to pay my respects. THANK YOU Russ for this post and Sonny was fortunate to have you in his life as you are for having had him in yours. Take care and God bless you and your exceptional family (individually and collectively) this day and all others to follow.
PS: To Elvis Presley fans I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you seek out, support, tell others about, etc. all of the endeavors in which Russ Howe is involved. for they are; rare, unique, of high quality, filled with never before seen, contains great facts and insights, great value(s), etc. When you have Elvis Presley combined with Russ Howe you have a terrific combo.

I think of the time when Elvis and Sonny got into a confrontation and Elvis punched him in the face and Sonny didn't retaliate he just said l didn't think you could do that to me Elvis and tears of option came to him . That was turning the other cheek . They both made it right with each other were still great friends. You could see in some of those videos like All the king's men that Red and Sonny and all of them loved Elvis and he loved them.
