India is cleaning up Ganga river. Here’s how.

- We are experiencing a dangerous decline in nature: One million species are threatened with extinction, soils are turning infertile and water sources are drying up.
But there are glimmers of hope: The Ganga river basin is not only home to twenty-five thousand animal and plant species, such as the Ganga River Dolphin, it also forms the spiritual and economic lifeline for almost half of India’s population. With increased pollution, the country’s greatest natural asset is at risk. Watch how farmers, wildlife advocates and government experts are teaming up to bring a river back to life.
Namami Gange has been recognized as a World Restoration Flagship under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
These initiatives represent Earth’s frontiers of hope, as countries agreed to a new Global Biodiversity Framework. Under the agreement, countries promise to protect 30% of the planet’s lands and seas, and bringing back 20% from degradation.

Are the river species still alive after all this pollution...
I live near Diamond Harbour, a city towards the mouth of Ganga into Bay of Bengal. Each monsoon, we see so many dolphins gather up and hunt migratory "Ilish"(species of herring), that come all the way from ocean to spawn. The water here is brackish, and very polluted. The place is not far from one of the biggest ports in India, Haldia. Although the number of dolphin coming each year has been decreasing. One of the most important aspects of improving water quality is stopping industry runoff or at least treating the water before it is discharged into the river. No matter how many sacrifices the people make, if the industries aren't pressured to take steps to prevent pollution, the change will seem minimal. From this video, it seems that not much has changed in that regard.
This video doesn't show it but massive changes have been made to stop such polluting inflows by building huge STPs.
River ganga is the third holiest river for me.

And this video made me feel happy, feels like we humans have started to acknowledge the value of our nature. Let me take this time to promise myself that I will help preserve our natural assets. ❤
As a citizen I also want to be a part of it and do my bit of contribution.
Not polluting and encouraging others not to pollute will be the biggest contribution, not only to Ganga but to other rivers also ...
Kicking anyone taking a leak on the banks would be a good start.
@@shikshapandey8196 there is no such thing as not polluting. You and I both pollute. Just because you dump your garbage in a dustbin doesn't mean it vanishes into thin air. Your garbage and my garbage ends up either in a landfield somewhere, floats through a river where it's dumped or at best is burned down so that the smoke rises up in the air and depletes the ozone layer slowly. So to advise someone not to pollute is to ask them to do the impossible. We as citizens of India have not yet fully gone plastic free...let alone stop polluting as a whole.
