I believe Hermes to be the god of the current age, commerce, communication and vast exchanges of information being the hallmarks of our time . His function as messenger would certainly make him central to these activities. It's also occurred to me that the caduceus could represent the double helix of the DNA molecule, which acts as a messenger of genetic material from one generation to the next. this would fit with Hermes' role as Psychopompoos, leading souls to the realm of the dead, and ultimately to further incarnations.
You Are Extremely On Point Brother . (except he is not the god of the current age) Hermes Is Thoth, Ares Is Mars Hermes Is Mars Mars Is Gabriel, The Messenger Of God, The Angel(God) Of War
Hermes is a good boy. A lot like his old man in many ways. Don't believe much of the gossip the other Olympians spread about him. A lot of them are really jealous of how quickly he becomes great at whatever he decides to pick up. I've faced this a lot in my life as well and can relate.
I always hated how people ONLY gossip about Zeus of him being a cheater... they ignore his good traits (and he has many) while loving gods like Poseidon who also cheated, raped Medusa and was generally a rather unfriendly god.
Hermes was one of the most popular Gods in ancient Greece. The Herms were statues of erect penises that were placed at boarders to mark the boundaries of fields and kingdoms.
Rooster,Ram,Hawk, Lyre (made from shell of tortoise), Tortoise, "Irish"strawberry Tree which probably has unknown medicinal properties(with it's white hermaphrodite flowers)?!? No doubt references towards the summer triangle,I have to look into Mercury and Jupiter/Saturn conjunction as well as Saturn in the Winter triangle, Orion/Gilgamesh/Nimrod and Canis Major and Canis Minor.... Funny, as a Aries all I ever wanted to be was a Painter or a Poet NOT a Martial artist but now I understand....I must protect the fire for generations to come so they to could cry, laugh and wonder in the shadows "I AM"
(1) Maybe it was a phallic way of calling those in the fields----a bunch of pussies! Or: (2) Maybe something went wrong in translation. Instead of Hermes they thought it was the land of Herpes! Therefore it wasn't the "boundaries of fields and kingdoms,"--- but bountiful fields of condoms---before you enter here. Or: (3) Was Hermes a dicktator? Say it ain't so!
Supposedly she stepped down as an Olympian for Dionysus, but there is no records claiming as such, and Hestia and Dionysus are never mentioned in the same passage. It is always one or the other but never both at the same time or place. So it is very likely that Dionysus and Hestia are the same entity. Dionysus is Hestia and Hestia is Dionysus.
But of you think about it, they are opposites. Dionysus likes to party and drink while hestia is more of a calm goddess. I highly doubt they are they same.
@@amberhutcherson9759 given everything we know, the history of Dionysus throughout the ages, those are never spoken of in the same sentence or place, it is always one or the other, and there is no records of Hestia ever stepping down yet the number stays at 12. It is very possible that they are the same entity, serving as a sort of duality role. As opposites as they may seem, they do intertwine with each other. Where else would you throw a party other than your own house where the hearth is. Everything depends on the hearth, the center of the household both good and ill, both nurturing love and madness induced stupor. Both the joy of life and the remembrance in death. It is always around the hearth, the center of the house. Home, that's what connects them both, and something that is valued highly. The joys and parties, the security and calm, both of aspects of home.
Hermes is overlooked today. He is honestly my favorite, he has done so many stunning jaw dropping things but is overlooked by being the god of thieves 🙄
Even overlooked by a nation of thieves, weather it be a thief of money, property, time, truth, innocence etc..... I guess that’s why Hermès and Christ are of the exact same value ⚖️ and are considered to be the same individual in the art of alchemy. Perhaps it’s one reason why America was blessed by god or Zeus as they are in equal value as well in America’s hardships in our birth/ beginning. 🤷♂️who knows all the answers to these thing’s right.
Seems like Hermes and Prometheus would get along great, you know, if Prometheus wasn't bound to a rock to feed a liver-eating eagle with his _own_ liver.
I love Hermes and he is so woefully under appreciated these days. Most people don't know that he was once such a popular god because he is treated as a transient, minor character in every modern book, show, or movie that depicts the Hellenic pantheon. Disney depicts him as a wimpy old dude with glasses. I think people don't really know what to do with him, really. It's easy to conceptualize a God of Thunder or a Goddess of Love, but a "God of Everything" is a tall order, LOL. So they normally only ever is depicted in his role as the Olympians messenger so he has an excuse not to be in the story. I think the reason he is the "god of everything" is because he is the god of the common mortal working man flailing through life and death and needing guidance.
Hermes is my favorite of all Greek Pantheon, especially since I am a magician and fiction writer about magicians who solve mysteries (criminal and medical) and I have always been a traveler/nomad since childhood.
My understanding is that Hermes' mother, Maia, is the Goddess of Increase. My interpretation is that Increase giving birth to all manner of Communication, yields Hermes to be the God of Meaningful Perception. This relates to Hermes Trismegistus - and all the excellent comments below - as Hermes the 3 times great, in which the meaningful perception of duality yields the third eye of self-awareness through which one becomes aware of divinity and self.

Hermes refers to the God above all. The beginning and the end, the alpha and the omega (borders). God of Language (Logos) He is the greek depiction of Christ. He transcends both with his wings just as Christ transcends the 2 criminals on the Cross. Even the depiction here on his left shoulder has that snake symbolism. Similar to Moses and his staff lifting up the snake. Similar Christian symbolism. Just as they write in the bible, through the son you get to the father. Telelogy, you knock on the door and you receive. Not to be confused with theology.
I like to think that Hermes and Odin have found themselves in their travels and that they exchance stories when they encounter the other, like friends who see each other not so often
never managed to understand the guy, apart from being Zeus' glorified mailman I couldn't really see much worth in Hermes. But now I understand that gods don't necessarily need to shoot lightning bolts to be important, as in the end little things are what matters the most.
Jacopo Armini Yeah I think that’s the impression most people have at first, but when you think of the importance of travel and trade in the Ancient World (hell even now), you begin to understand why he was so important. On from that he also presided over animal husbandry and so on. Even so, communication isn’t a thing to scoff at either.
@y. Ahriman also think of him as the flash. At first the flash just sounds like a fast super hero & then you realize him being able to do things like time travel, heal his body practically instantly and the other things he could do he then becomes a lot more powerful. As mentioned Hermès was unbelievably fast, smart, if he could travel dimensions he could probably time travel, and also he is considered To be Thoth who also talked of reincarnating repeatedly to help humanity.
Wait what? Hermes has A LOT more than being a messenger and prankster. He works for Hades in the Underworld, the other gods can't even go there. I think he does more than just deliver messages from Zeus to Hades, he also guides dead people to the Underworld. He is also smart as he is god of other more civilized things such as commerce/trade, which is basically business in modern times. If you thought Apollo has too many titles look at Hermes he has even more. He's also God of literature, writing, diplomacy, athletics, astronomy, and much much more. You can Google some sites with information on the gods for more info on all the titles he has, theoi is pretty good and there's others. There's a lot more to him but I don't feel well versed enough in mythology to explain it well. There are plenty of good sources to learn about him if you look.
It’s interesting how Hermes was basically split into two gods with the Norse/Germanic myths. Loki and Odin are the Hermetic/Mercurial equivalents in Norse mythology. Loki is the trickster god and Odin is the messenger god (among other things)
He puts the message from the gods in one of his birkin or kelly bags, and then he flies off to deliver them wearing a fancy scarf. Aphrodite is jealous of his closet in Olympus.
Fun facts. Hermes' Roman equivalent, Mercury, is where we get the word "mercurial" from, as well as providing the name of the e-commerce company, Mercari.
I think Hermes is the deification of faith, the thing that moves everything in the universe. It would explain why is the only one who can move in and out of the realm of the dead.
If you saw "Jason & the Argonauts" the 1963 version starring Todd Armstrong (with Ray Harryhausen doing his magic) you saw Hermes transforming into a giant before your eyes and taking Jason to Mt. Olympus for a sit down. He was decked out in his winged helmet too. Cool! "Talos will stop you," is one of my memorable lines from that movie. Talos was a bad-assed 230 feet (or 23 stories high) bronze Titan. Also "kill, kill, kill them all," was the command by the king to his army of sword swash buckling skeletons to take out Jason. One skeleton was killed when the blade of a sword went between his ribs! Must have been an inside joke or something---the skeleton went down in a lot of agony---ouch! Ray Harryhausen at his best in this flick.
I remember having read somewhere that even though according to the myth Pan was Hermes's son, in actuality, some accounts date Pan before Hermes historically and support the theory that Hermes was an aspect of Pan's that later on got separated and formed a different deity, hence the association with herds, shepherds, cattle, etc.
In human form Hermes energy make a person a jack of all trade and the challenge is that this person's can't stay on to completion of a task they have so much energy and drive for freedom, change, and exploration. The worst part, they like engaging in short term pleasures that create a long term suffering.
As always a great episode from art work, music selection and knowledge regarding the deities themselves. Really amused regarding Hermes top speed, that sounds about right. Thank-you for all the care that you put into this series. I'm sure Hermes himself appreciates it as well. I always look forward to receiving the notice that you have put up a new chapter. The only negative aspect of Hermes is that he has a weaker sense of duty than his brother Apollo. There is a reason Apollo is trusted to patronize the Oracle at Delphi, because he takes this role very seriously. Hermes would make a fine oracle technically speaking. However, he would likely use the position to play tricks on people. Pan is the beginning stage of mankind. Wild, unpredictable, although with an early reverence for culture exemplified by his Panpipes. He represents man's past. The initial stages of overcoming beastly instincts, represented by his half man half beat form. Hermes is the middle stage of humanity's ascent. He represents the current stage of mankind. He has fully mastered his beastly instincts, but not yet his human intellect (at least in benevolence terms), hence why he loves to play tricks. He is often depicted as a young man for these reasons. He is the "adolescent" form of human kind, and is not originally a god for this reason, he must earn it, just as humans must "earn" their afterlife. Apollo is the "finished product" of mankind, so to speak. He is fully ascended into godhood, he has fully mastered both his beastly instincts as well as his human nature, and although he is still wrathful and arrogant at times (representing that he has not fully mastered his GODhood) he symbolizes what mankind can strive to become. He is a master of culture, and patronizes the Oracle at Delphi for these reasons. He has mastered the arts, as well as the mind. He is the 'future' of mankind.
Hermes is as fast as he wants to be, in my opinion. I think a lot about this stuff for fantasy writing purposes, but I think one of the perks of being a god, is that unlike mortals, and unless it's against another divine creature, there really are no limits at all. Hermes being the personification of speed in Greek mythology could just simply be as fast as needed as physics generally do not apply to gods than any other mythological creature.
I have two wings on my ankles to replicate the winged sandals. It’s to remind myself to travel and seek other cultures and hopefully not get smite by Zues’ bolt when traversing in Zues’ domain. Great video again mate 👍🏻
Loving the channel mate, Mythology has captured me since I was a kid. Also the word you're looking to describe Hermes travelling through the underworld is a psychopomp
Hermes is capable of doing things very quickly, something that takes 10 lives He manages to do in 3 years or even just the first time meeting him, He is a great hypnotist too, he is also a master of Chaos, from Chaos stars are born, He has more female fans than male fans though
I was curious About Hermes, and the facts which show how dimensional he is. Proves how he could really be that Greek god that has that companion on a road trip.
I remember somehow about how Hermes got the job of helping the dead to the underworld: he pleaded with Zeus that if he would allow him to guide the dead to the underworld, that he would promise never to lie again, but occasionally not tell the truth. and Zeus apparently getting a kick out of Hermes, said you got the job!!! I love Hermes
I have been building my relationship with Hermes as one of my most active deities in my spiritual practice, and I feel like He has been guiding me through these difficult times for myself and everyone around me~ When ever I look back throughout my life, after I watched this video, I started thinking about how many potential signs he's been trying to send me but I was just too oblivious to notice at that moment 😅 whoops, my bad!
Dude same , when I was in second grade we all got assigned Greek god projects and I got given hermes , years later I’m 17 and super into the emerald tablet , 7 hermetic principles unknowingly hermes was behind it. It’s truly a beautiful synchronicity for me. I will achieve great things
When a god has different appearances and too many attributes, I always think a syncretism must have taken place, that is several different deities were unified into one. This happened to Artemis as well.

It's also occurred to me that the caduceus could represent the double helix of the DNA molecule, which acts as a messenger of genetic material from one generation to the next. this would fit with Hermes' role as Psychopompoos, leading souls to the realm of the dead, and ultimately to further incarnations.
True! 😯

Not to be confused with theology.

never managed to understand the guy, apart from being Zeus' glorified mailman I couldn't really see much worth in Hermes.

Thoth and Hermes are said to be the same deity. Or Thoth is where The Greeks got the idea for Hermes.
Other way around, Hermes is indo european the only egyptian cults we know actually were actually brought to greece were Hathor and Tawaret
Is Hermes the root of the "Godspeed" thing whenever someone is about to embark on a coming-of-age adventure of sorts?
I think Hermes is the deification of faith, the thing that moves everything in the universe.
It would explain why is the only one who can move in and out of the realm of the dead.
If you saw "Jason & the Argonauts" the 1963 version starring Todd Armstrong (with
Ray Harryhausen doing his magic) you saw Hermes transforming into a giant before your eyes and taking Jason to Mt.
Absolutely LOVE Hermes and his tales. I have his staff tattooed on my forearm. We can do everything if we set our mind to it 🙏🏼
I remember having read somewhere that even though according to the myth Pan was Hermes's son, in actuality, some accounts date Pan before Hermes historically and support the theory that Hermes was an aspect of Pan's that later on got separated and formed a different deity, hence the association with herds, shepherds, cattle, etc.
In human form Hermes energy make a person a jack of all trade and the challenge is that this person's can't stay on to completion of a task they have so much energy and drive for freedom, change, and exploration. The worst part, they like engaging in short term pleasures that create a long term suffering.
As a one of an infinite manifestation of the hermes archetypal energy, this is too true 😂
