Hey Guys! This is not the "typical" lesson. But just going over some gear. Lots of people have been asking me how or what amps I use to get my tone. In this video I'll be demoing the Gallien Krueger Plex Preamp, showing you guys what i use in most of my lesson tutorials! GK is an awesome company with amazing people.

This is by far the BEST demo I've seen of the GK Plex!! Thank you VERY much for an excellent video.
I got one back in March and absolutely love it. The best part is, I don't need separate compressor and tuner pedals. It fits in my gig bag, with all my cables and such, so I'm only carrying my bass, amp and gig bag to a gig. Frees me up so I can help my rhythm brother set up his kit and sound.

Yah that’s definitely a super effective way to demo any type of tone shaping device.. Whether it’s a tiny 30$ graphic-eq stombox, outboard pro level Ob-Preamp (Trickfish minnow, Genzler Magellan, Tonehammer etc) Or the 29 knob parametic tube eq w/variable/switchable everything & the kitchen sinkrackmount preamp unit.. Hearing a “slap style” & “pick rock” back>back clips with different basses & eq settings is basically useless!!
I got the GK800rb when it came out
and I still see it being used on stage today!

Elementary question...?? how well doe this work with an active bass? Would you recommend setting everything flat on the onboard active bass preamp? Or does it just depend on the sound/tone you're wanting?
Those compressors are really interesting. Do you have any tips about attack release combos that you would use? Maybe you could demo this in the studio and how to use this to blend/stand out. I appreciate your knowledge!
Fast Attack and Realease for bass parts with short notes. Long release for arrangements with sustained notes. Ratio 3:1 or 4:1.
Bro great unit and excellent video specially explaining what each potentiometer does. I only wish you would've recorded one bass line. I'm referring of course to the slap part.

Can you use it as audio interface to record bass straight to the computer?
I'm editing my comment. Daric, you're obviously a tremendous player, so no disrespect to you.There is a real market for a device like the PLEX. I'm in love with the concept but this thing as no headroom, no bypass switch, it's digital, the compressor is awful, the tuner is ok although turning it on/off is clunky, no power button. Not a single one of the knobs on my Plex have the same resistance and most of them are incredibly loose. GK has updated the firmware 3 times already and a new one is coming. Just hanging on to it until the next update as there are rumors of some drastic changes to the layout. We'll see... Really hope somebody nails a unit like the PLEX. I would buy it in a heartbeat.
Do you put your looper pedal pre or post to the pre amp ?
Where do you plug the preamp pedal ? To return or input head ?
Overdrive is horrid, Darkglass or Ampeg Scrambler would be my choices for that sound

Hey Daric! Cool pedal. I have a question: My only bass is a Fender Marcus Miller (Japan) with no passive tone control, only active boost, but I'd like to also have access to that cut tone sound on some songs, like rnb ballads or Motown stuff, that you can get from a passive bass. Do you think this pedal could provide that kind of sound since I can't really get it (aside from palm muting) unless I modify the wiring or change the preamp?

Great question, I have honestly not tried this with a passive bass but I'm sure you can get the tones out of it that you wish. But I'm going to do a demo of that to show you what it can sound like with a passive bass
@@daricsbasslessons Actually I have an active bass that has no tone control. It’s a Fender Marcus, which is a great bass, but if you also want to get a darker sound out of it it’s tough to do without either changing the preamp or getting a pedal/amp that’ll do the trick
I was excited to hear it as a GK lover but I'm disappointed. I'll get a Tech 21. Great demo though.
All you need is a $5k bass and it will sound amazing!! :)
It sounds good but I can't tell one bass amp from another, they sound alike.
So the preamp customizes the amp sound before it reaches the bass amplifier. Looks like a good tool. Two thumbs up

When you are using this pre amp, what is your bass pre amp set for; flat response or some adjustments; Are you setting the bass amp knob flat response or are you using some amp setting as well?
Best to bypass the preamp on the bass amp. Use effects return or aux in.

Can it used into a gk cabinet? How many watts/ohms can it handle? Can I substitute it for an amp head?
Only the GK MBP powered cabs.
This is a preamp, no power.
Is this thing like a bass amp without the speaker? but on roids? Can you just plug headphones in that without a speaker? I'm looking for a solution in a small room where I don't want to cram my self with an amp.

Heads up. TC Spectradrive - less than half this money, and I can't fault it. Pedal feels like weight, sounds like weight - don't be a fool man.
