      Haha, it does seem that way doesn't it. But the building work is better in Dawn's hands as I know she will do a good job. I can just potter and do little bits around the place while she is busy (AKA skive off)
      Funnily enough I said the same thing in a comment below about it being an iceberg. It is a bugger. But yes, it will be gone in the end.
      Thank you as always Carol. Hope you are well xxx

    Ben, you are becoming a cinematographer! Great composition and editing, a story that's fun to watch. Please do rest after exhausting yourself, or you might get too discouraged, perhaps do a fun for your project next! Dawn, I have no doubts you will become a master limer and its great you didn't use creosote on the fence posts. Love the containment you are creating for your place, putting chicken wire over the gate to keep out the riffraff? European badgers are so cuddly compared to Canadian ones. Proud of both of you of the ways you are choosing to renovate and create.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  4 місяці тому +2

      Thank you so much Sharon, that is really nice of you to say so. Practice and learning I suppose as I go. The laptop is crashing more often than not now so that is frustrating but a fix is in sight.
      The building is in safe hands with Dawn doing it. Now she has started she won't stop and will lime mortar me if I stand still for too long.
      The posts are treated already but we will leave them that colour. The chicken wire will be next but just wanted to get them fitted.. sadly they are not a pair so will have wait until the matching one is available, hopefully next week. Then it will look great.
      We had an idea that we had a badger from little scuff marks on the land, but we never expected a family of them. That was filmed over the course of three nights. The first night was learning how high the camera needed to be etc, the second night we saw the family and after that just one or two at a time. They are active for about 4 hours each night from about midnight. We are proud to be able to share them. I will have to have a look at Canadian ones.
      Thank you very much, we are proud of ourselves too, it is everything we hoped it would be and much more.
      Have a lovely week and than you for being a channel member :-)

      Ooh wow! I bet the relief is huge knowing you only have a 1/3 left! Well….yes a magic wand might come in handy, there’s so much to be filled around here on just the outbuildings and then there’s the house too! 🫣 we had hoped to be getting the cement render of the front of the house this year but I think that’s going to have to wait and we might chuck some white paint on it for this year just to make it look nicer!
      I forgot about the little strawberry in the end but I did leave it by the wall sat on soil so I must go check see if it took root again but we do have more growing in the wall again so that’s nice 🙂

    Dawn is super woman to have put that gate post in and now, stonemason extraordinaire, I'm so impressed. The gates do look good and it was so lovely to see the Badger family snuffling about, they're wonderful animals. Oh and the newly organised workshop is fab'. I look forward to your updates, it's all becoming increasingly interesting, not that the 'dig' wasn't 😂 but the stone outbuilding is going to be amazing when finished. ❤

      Aww thank you Pat! ❤️ we’re really pleased with how the fence posts turned out and very pleased that with all the bedrock around, that I was able to get enough removed to get the post in deep enough. As for the outbuilding, I’m soooo excited about doing that finally! Can’t wait to get up in the morning and keep at it. I love doing stonework. Time consuming but love it.
      We were so chuffed to see the badgers on the camera…quite surprised to see so many and the little family of four of them was amazing! Haha we are happy the digging is pretty much done with. It’s been a really good week of getting some interesting things done again! ❤️

    It’s amazing what you find inside a tree, because a tree will grow around anything in its way basically. Are you just going to chip away at it or leave it for now as you shore up the cottage walls? And, Well done Dawn, that wall is already starting to look so much better. Love the bit of cinematography of the bike and peaking through the chink in the wall. I also love the gates, but I think your dogo friend will wish there was a dog flap to get through once they are completely mounted, or will they sit a bit higher up for him to visit? Are badgers destructive? Their funny little tails are too cute. They kinda look like a skunk and a possum had a kid. Can’t wait to see what y’all get done this week. Have a great week!

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  4 місяці тому +1

      It ended up just becoming the wall in the end looking at it! There’s stones embedded in it in various places! I think we will have to try and chip away it because to be able to fix that part of the outbuilding we need to be able to get it cut down quite a bit. It will look so much nicer without big holes in the walls, fingers crossed I do a good enough job on it too 😂
      Ben was quite pleased with himself for that bit with the bike! We found that bike hidden under all the Ivy in that outbuilding when we cleared it out, so we will probably sand it down and spray it up all shiny again 😊
      The dog will still be able to visit as he isn’t much bigger than a cat and will be able to get under it. He has started coming most mornings for a visit with us and to see the cats. ❤️
      Hahaha yes they do look like a skunk and a possum had a kid! 🤣 I don’t think they’re destructive, other than digging little holes in the earth for worms! So far, it’s been a very productive week, looking forward to showing you all on Saturday! You have a great week too!

    Those roots even surprised me. If you could get a tractor and a stout chain, you could try to ease that root out, gently or failing that, you could take the breaker and remove those stones from the root. If you've killed the roots, that'll eventually rot down. You could certainly rebuild the wall or you could put a small gate in there, instead of the wall. Really enjoyed this episode, keep up the good work and before you know it, you'll have the roof on. 👍👍

    • @thecornerhouseproject

      Oh they did us too, never thought they were going to be that sort of size! It was quite deceiving with the small part the roadside of the wall. The tree root was weed killed last year and has started to die off so fingers crossed it’s not growing anymore now. If we can get the majority of the root out it would be lovely to get the wall built back up again. We will have to see how successful we are in removing the root! lol soo excited to be able to get the roof back on! It’s been sooo long since we’ve seen it with roof!

    Hi Dawn Ben. Great to see the start of the building. I have neaver done building of stones but I have built blocks. There’s a few real handy tools u should get. And old 4” paint brush or bigger and a bucket of water to wet the stone to help the lime stick to them better. A real soft natural hair floor brush or hand brush. Builders use these for cleaning up and nibs of mortar at the end of the day. And a pointing iron or a bit of 22mm pipe to help with the pointing. Use a 4ft spirit level to be sure the stones are in line and you know the score your selves. For ur gates it might be an idea to fix some drop bars to the top keep them in line and a local builder or farm shop should have the gate hangers and should be cheaper than screw fix. With my gates up now and the children out running about I got a small retaining wall built and this week I might get a few kerbs down. It’s all go.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi Marcus, oh you and us both with the outbuilding, it’s been a long time coming! Thanks for the tips on the tools, I’m quite pleased to see that I have all that covered lol. I have a water sprayer instead of a brush for the dampening things down. We bought it all for the joists and fixing them back in.
      Ben did ask at the agri place for some drop but they didn’t have any at the time. Fixings we have as well and once we get the one gate swapped we will be good to go with hanging them. It’s all very exciting right now!
      Sounds like it’s all looking good there with you and yours right now, just need a bit of prolonged good weather and it will be fantastic. It’s lovely to finally be out of the winter and cold weather so we can all get stuck in again. 😊

      That root is huge! We never expected it to be quite as large as it is! It’s gonna take a fair while chipping away at that to get rid of it.

      Yeah we did think about that…but our water is quite precious lol as we collect rain water for our water and we have to be careful with how much we use and because I’ll need water for mixing the lime for outbuilding we needed to hang onto it a bit. You’re right though it would have made it a lot quicker to get to the roots.

    Well done you two, conquering your fears and learning new skills. Dawn, you need a bucket of water to soak the stones (same with bricks) before you place them so the stone doesn't dry out the lime too fast. They don't have to soak a long time, pick out the stone you want, put them in the water and have a cup of tea, come back and render them in place, pick out the next set of stone and put them to soak while you mix your mortar or have another cup of tea. Lay your stone like lego so that where two stones meet the stone on top covers the joint that stops the wall from cracking. Get a hammer and a chisel and bash the stones to make them fit - don't worry about finding the right stone. You are doing amazing and what you have done so far looks fantastic!!! I'm so proud of you I could bust! Badgers will eat a lot of grubs but do be careful, they are nasty.

    Badgers, badgers, badgers! 🦡🦡🦡 It's always felt to me like a blessing of sorts when (benign) wildlife chooses to live right along with me. & can I say how amazing it is to see Ben pick up a stone the size of a large cardboard bootbox and just handle it like it was an empty cardboard bootbox. (Both of you have been doing that sort of thing for a while now; but I was just freshly impressed.)
    That stump! I'm think I've lived on apartments/flats smaller than that stump. Unsolicited idea Du Jour: may be rebuild the wall at least partly as a fungary/stumpery/deadhedge rather than all in stone?
    And Dawn looks like she knows exactly what she's doing rebuilding that wall. The work she's done looks really good & solid.

      We would love to be able to get the stump,out if possible but I think we may have leave some of the roots in because they possibly worked their merry way under the outbuilding!🫣 we need to get a big chunk out to be able to realign the stones that it’s pushed into the building. I do like your idea though as it is a lot less work than trying to get it out!

    You could reuse those log root circular cuts as stepping stones in your mulch patch. Also I think its a great area for a walk through gate, allowing you to use the flat stones as also walking path material, within the gravel if that is what your putting down, it could highlight or border paths or make great stones to lay at the entrances and exits to the out buildings. It would be a great place to invite neighbors into your yard or talk over the fence. Now what were those animals? Badgers? Don't forget to beat the lime in with a hard brush into your joints and smooth before it gets too hard. Great job on both the building and getting that wall down!😊😃

    i wouldnt have even noticed the gate issue, but when u pointed it out i see it, , if its something your bothered with, you can perhaps add a cap cover to go over each top inside corner. fab work guys you are slaying it

      @thecornerhouseproject  2 місяці тому

      Well I won't tell anyone it is wonky if you don't lol. I think it is where the gates aren't level, so I had to bring the bottom out on one to make them look level.
      Both posts could do with caps really to stop the rain going down into the post and rotting it.
      Thank you for watching and commenting 🙂

    Well done guys!!! Maybe a small fire might help get rid of the roots 😂😂😂 . Done a bit of re pointing but not on that scale !!! A strong plastic bag with the corner cut of like an icing bag is good for filling the small gaps .

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  4 місяці тому

      🤣 🤭 of course there would be a fire there! It’s probably a good idea though because that is some beast of a tree there! Yeah I’ve seen that said before with the icing bag. We got one of those mortar guns last year (looks a bit like a sealant gun) but didn’t have a lot of success with that but I think the mix was a bit to thick, so might be worth digging that out and seeing if that will work this time.

    Doing well Dawn, I'd love to rebuild a wall, it's like a massive jigsaw puzzle. Some of the new builds near me have planted ivy growing up the fronts of the houses, they might regret that.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  4 місяці тому +1

      Ooh yes they probably will, it looks lovely but when you see what damage it can do and how it can shift the weight of some those giant stones overtime, you would definitely thing again about knowingly planting it near a building! 😂
      Yes! It is like a giant puzzle, we must share the same kind of brain because I’m loving it! ❤️

    A question for your Q n A sessions - can you tell us of any bumps, bruises, accidents you've both had during the renovation? Also Id love to know what you're cooking these days in your proper kitchen, are - do you have any grizzly tales from the old days when you first started out of meals yourve had.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  2 місяці тому +1

      I’ll answer you here but if we do another q&a we will answer there too as it’s a good question. 😊 Bumps and bruises a plenty, luckily nothing serious. I fell and impaled my arm on a rusty nail about 9 months ago, that was scary but I’m fine. Ben had a nice scrape on his head from a piece of ply falling from the ceiling but We’ve had more aching joints than anything else really. Food wise for the first 6 months we lived on pots of noodles and cheese toasties! We’re still very limited in the kitchen cooking area with a microwave, induction hob and a table top hob, but I did manage to cook Christmas dinner in it! Not sure how but it turned out pretty well! 🤣

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  3 місяці тому

      Hi Balla, thank you for watching and commenting tonight.
      It is hard to gauge volume for all devices. There is a recommended volume for both speech and music which I do try to stick to. The repetitiveness is just part of the music chosen I am afraid. I always try to mix the tracks of music so you don't hear the same one over and over in one video. But with all that said, I will take you comment onboard.
      Thank you again :-)

    Dawn and Ben your both getting some amount of work done every week it's amazing. That tree trunk was a trial I am sure to get it removed. It just shows the damage ivy can do on buildings and tree's. Take care and mind yourselves God bless xx

      Hi Colette 😊 it was a very good week last week for getting things done, it was lovely to get so many different things done. Ooh yes the tree trunk is going to be a right pain in the butt! It definitely makes you realise that letting a tree grow so close to a building is really not a good thing to do and then add Ivy to the mix….recipe for disaster! You take care too and see you next week 😘xx

    At 2:35, might that have been a door that has been walled in behind you? The vertical row of large stones suggests that it might have been.

    • @thecornerhouseproject

      We only just found this past week that the end of that building used to have a big barn door in the end, so even though that building had partially collapsed it now makes sense as to why that corner is lovely straight and intact.

    WOW! I am so impressed by the organized workshop. I liked the gates too. There is so much progress being done. I watched your video on the first look around on your land and was so amazed in what you have accomplished in a year. Y’all seem to have an abundance in energy. I am recovering from my surgery and was looking forward to your video. It made my day. Cheering y’all on, just nana 🌳🌳🌳🪨🪨🪨❤️

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  4 місяці тому +1

      I can't take any credit for organisation Just Nana, Dawn is the sorter and organiser, I just reap the benefits at the end of it.
      It has been a busy year and it has been nice to be able to spend time on both the house and the land. We think we are finally at a point where we can do this or do that without the urgency the floors bought last year or the land clearing brought this year. So we have gate (nearly), work has started on repairing the building and already I have done a couple of bits today while Dawn has been outside.
      Not sure about an abundance of energy, but we do like to keep going. I was shattered yesterday though. It doesn't happen often, but yesterday got me.
      Hope your recovery is going well and thank you so so much for being a channel member and of course watching and commenting :-)

    Great job to both of you. You're making good progress. By the way, please be careful when people say things like it's easier to tear the wall down & start over. I've seen other channels where people were told this & once they started taking parts of walls apart, the whole thing comes down. Then after weeks of carrying huge rocks trying to rebuild, they end up having to hire professionals. It's not always better to take the wall apart. Some people giving advice have never built a rock wall before & don't realize how heavy rocks are & how hard it is on the body. If possible, I think it's better to fix walls if possible like Dawn is doing. I've even seen people incorporate tree parts in walls & add more rocks & point around them to avoid rebuilding walls. Just an opinion from another non-expert that has never built a wall before...

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  4 місяці тому

      Thank you 😊 Generally we’re not easily led with doing what people advise us to do if it goes against what we think 😂 (probably not always a good thing) but this time we think it was the right thing to do. We asked the farmer neighbour if he would be kind enough to give us some pointers on using the chainsaw (as neither have used one before 😬) and even he said it would be safer taking it down with trying to use the chainsaw with all the stone around. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t something we really wanted to do ☹️ when we do rebuild it, we will have to rebuild it around some of the stump because it looks like some of the roots may have gone beneath the outbuilding unfortunately. We just need to be able to get a portion of it cut so we can fix the wall of the outbuilding that it’s leaning against. I like your opinion because it is a valid very opinion and normally we would have avoided at all costs taking something like that down. 😘

    It might cause more damage.... so take this idea with some caution... some rocks with crack or break with extreme heat....wonder if you can use what I grew up calling a pair burner to burn out the stump. It's a really big butane torch used to burn the thorns of prickly pair, so cows can eat them when there is not enough grass for feeding. Folks also use it to char wood to protect it from water & outside elements.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  4 місяці тому

      Ooh I’ve not heard of doing that before. Might not be the best way for us with the buildings either side though…especially as we don’t own one of them lol. I love how it’s used to give the cows more food though when the grass is low. I’ve seen a couple of UA-cam videos of people charring wood as a preserver, looks really good after too.
