Even though this song was first released in the early 80's, Chris Stapleton really made it his own, and I just love the tasteful blend of country, gospel, soul, R&B, and blues that he brought to his arrangement. It's as much Etta James and Sam Cooke as it is David Allan Coe or George Jones. I borrowed some riffs from Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind," since it's such a similar arrangement. Trying to recreate Chris Stapleton's vocal melody with the guitar was some of the best melodic education I've ever gotten.. the control he has over pitch and inflection is incredible!

I was sweeping the garage when this song came on. I ended up slow dancing with the broom...😌
😂✌🏻🇺🇸
You too? 😅
love it!
Should’ve set it on fire.... Then you could’ve been slow dancing with a burning broom
Mind sharing that playlist? UA-cam algorithm got me here and I love this guys work.
This is like listening to a lullaby...I could loop this and sleep like a baby!

sent to my granddaughter for a lullaby,..1 month old this Wednesday!!
@@kathyelliott1606 awww! That's beautiful! I hope she loves it!
@@fairwitness7473 omg,..she really did!! daughter said she looked like she was zoning out while it played! a new fan!!!! hey start em out young to love great music!!! thank you!!
@@kathyelliott1606 Y'all made me smile. Thanks.
I think I was a tween maybe when we got color tv. Before MTV was a sparkle in someone’s eye, there was Ed Sullivan show and a show called Hee haw. Very different venues but as a young boy I was hypnotized be the hand and finger movements of musicians. First time I ever saw that up close. Guitar, banjo, piano, violin or fiddle, absolutely hypnotizing.
All these decades later, still hypnotized. 😵💫
So awesome!
After getting a sponge and soaking up the tears off my amplifier, I decided to try something. I went down the neck to Gm and echoed and answered you....fucking hell. I've been bored to death with the same scales....then I just listened to you...and was able to stay in tune...in key, and on time....in a basic way...my wife asked who the guitarists were in the video. She had no idea I sounded like anything close to a semi competent player....I was smiling the entire time I was playing....thank you. It's been a shit week. My mom is in hospice, my aunt died, a close friend died....thank you.
Hope you're doing ok
I hope you’re doing better my friend
Isn’t it getting time JJ receives a huge award for his original performances and his conservation of the Blues in a very special way?
Justin the only guy who stayed for the common goal of just making great music and didn't go off with some great band and became so famous he wouldn't be able to do the things he does as a common man! We who are fans of his guitars and music do appreciate it very much. Thanks Justin!! You've taught so many with the way you've done things!!
Thanks for all the countless hours you spend mastering every note, giving them the respect they deserve..and every instrument you play to bring beautiful music to us.
You're definitely one of the most talented guitarists when we consider technical abilities and musicality. Your arrangements are fantastic!
The worst part is when it's over.
Fantastic once again

No one can argue that your not the absolute "Best Hill Country Musician"
alive and putting your Soul into it !!!
Just keep following your heart young man. God Bless You and Thank You.

Justin has the soul that can't be taught! He was born with it! We can't learn it, but we can damn sure admire it! Thanks Justin! Keep doin what u do!
you got me thinking..my brother always understood music,he didant have to learn (yes hes the very clever type) he has long fingers and can play the hardest guitar things, myself my hands didant even open,,i only opened my left hand as i played bass so much as a kid starting a beatles copy band,,and everything i learnt was slow going, but i had the will power my brother never had,so i have done lots more than him and write tons of songs he never writes songs,,, i see talent as something he had as its built in and natural to him,,when people say i have talent i say i did it with hard work,,but then i have "the soul" for it he doesant.. i feel what you say about Justin isant correct as many years and the will power can get us there,,stu
Justin, your playing is amazing. It's great to see when a musician is truly connected to their instrument.
Music is good for the soul
My friend you are truly gifted.
I'm a lifelong drummer, who wished I could play a guitar as incredible as you!
You make Tennessee whiskey sound wonderful your music just brightens up a person on a down day and that's what I like about it

This instrumental brings up this emotion in me, i cant describe it. My father passed away recently, he was a major blues fan like myself. Thank you for this rendition. Its brought a little sunshine into my life right now.
Please, if you are reading this, take a moment to tell your loved ones how much you care, a day will come where you wont be able to anymore. Dont take your time for granted.❤

You gotta hand it to him him folks. Those long phlangunges can sure pick and play. I don't care if he does play guitar with garden tools. The man can play. Making that Martin sing. Awesome job Justin.
I honestly don't know how to tell you how awesome you are... If my wife is upset, I play your music and we smile. Thank you

I just got my father's day gift😎 It's a Bluetooth speaker for my deck and hot tub area. Nothing like going right to my main man Justin Johnson with this song being first in the air. Oh Lawd, life is good 😎
"I'd rather go blind"
Thanks J.J., beautiful version of this song, I could hear Etta singing it as you picked the words out.
You made me tear up again.
Peace, love, health and harmony be with you.
✌💜🎸🎶
🇨🇦🐈😎
Damn! ... and I just mean DAMNNNN! The soul that JJ relates in his playing is off the charts!
who needs vocals with playing like this. Wonderful !!
Add in a few different wind instruments now and then.
Those were some pretty soulful bends… what a version.
Just floored . . . you sang the lyrics with the notes on the guitar without actually singing a word.
I had never thought about how much like "I'd rather be blind" that song is until now. Wonderful arrangement, well done.👍
"I'd Rather Go Blind" is all I ever hear when I listen to this song... no matter which / whos version...
Chris Stepleton used the tune from “I’d rather go blind” for his rendition of Tennessee whiskey
the same song came to mind on the first few notes.....get tune
Etta was such a talent. One of my favorites.
Both songs have the 12/8 rhythmic meter, are in the key of A, and have a chord progression often found in classic gospel and soul music.
This man is the best guitarist I’ve ever heard I love this guy I could listen and watch him all day Justin keep on doing it brother may God bless you always
Just found your music. You truly are a gift to this world, you can make the darkest days fill with light. Fan for life.
Just wanted to say I enjoy your music...you made an old lady smile
I felt like I just completed life and this is playing on my way up to heaven with all my family (passed away) cheering me at the gates 🥺💕💕💕💕💕🌹🌹🌹🌹🥰🥰

This video and these comments are about one of the most wholesome things on the internet. I wish you all a happy day, week, month, and all the years ahead. ❤️
Just heard the best guitar player of all time,Justin J. love the blues.
Oh no you didn't...I swear on all that is sacred I was going to ask you for this two days ago, but wasn't sure if it was too cliche. Can never go wrong with whiskey. Awesome, Justin, and thanks for bringing so much joy to so many.❤🍀🇮🇪
I listen to this about once a week... Something about his version is so righteous....
I don't know how to express how impressed I am with this. How you took an already Bluesy Ballad and gave it more Blues with a touch of Swing.
Pristine perfection. 💖
It´s Just amazing.
When God made You, he have you Soul instead of blood. You are the best that I've heard EVER. Thank you for who you are Justin. There should be a recorder on when you just walk by a guitar. I could listen to you 24hrs a day.
Outstanding OMG thank you.I can't say how many times I heard you play and it is so sweet.Time after time I'll come back to hear you play. I am hooked. Your fingures are made for rocking I am glad you didn't miss out on what God has in store for you
Well your living proof that when God hands out talent he doesn't hold back he gave you more then most, Absolutely fantastic.
No, maybe he's practiced for years and put in tireless hours. God ain't done shit
@@1theedster and you more then likely believe every word trump says. Test your theory start practicing and see if you can catch up!
Im british and dont care about americas fucked up government but hey man at least we can agree this guy is fantastic.
nah he just practiced lol. don't downplay his work ethic in the name of god.
I believe that Justins talent did come from God. Most of us don't use ours. He is using His up. God gave him talent, but he is more than doing his part with it. I hope I never hear that Justin ""sold his soul to the devil" like you hear so many say. No devil blesses people like this.
As a guitar player for decades now I think guys like Justin played alone and had no one else to play with and said FUNK IT (you get my meaning) and learned to play both parts of everything.
When a guitar player can keep perfect rhythm and vocalize like this on a fretboard,,, Man! That's what a guitar player dreams of. Well done brother.
This song. A glass of George Dickel. Perfect.
Beautiful arrangement! Someone said this is like listening to a lullaby, and that is pretty darn accurate. It is so peaceful and yet so mesmerizing.
When you have been worrying what to do with your live and this intrumental piece shows up on your screen and gives you a little piece of heaven. Awesome bro
I think I'm officially a fan.
The talent of Hendrix or Dylan and the looks of Lennon and Jim Morrison. What a beautiful and extremely gifted artist.
Man a well played instrumental guitar piece speaks directly to the soul. This was one of those pieces! Honestly Justin, you have quite a few that do that to me. I felt I should express my appreciation and thanks now as I don't always comment, though it is why I subscribed.
I agree wholeheartedly
Beautiful , bass line ,rhythm guitar and leads all in one style , incredible technique
The dedication to learn to play like this
So bloody sweet. How could anyone give that a thumb down? For the 81 people who have please post your better version for us all to judge please.
Probably because of his hat.
I like how it’s different from the actual song but has the same feel
I am now 66 years old and thought I'd heard everything worth hearing, this is the best!
I like how UA-cam shows me this dude every once in a while
Awesome. I love Stapleton's version and - as usual - I have no idea how you put vocals, bass, drums and some guitar into a single guitar part.
I didn’t know this song before I saw 9 year old Taj Farrant play it. Beautiful melody
Just imagine…Chris Stapleton and Justin Johnson together making music 🤯 ❤️🔥🔥
I can't believe how you can come back to @Justin Johnson videos and still be completely inspired and amazed at how well you become at improving like this when you completely feel everything you play.
This is one of my favorite song then played by my favorite artist. what a combination
Used to spend my nights out in a barroom
Liquor was the only love I've known
But you rescued me from reachin' for the bottom
And brought me back from being too far gone
You're as smooth as Tennessee whiskey You're as sweet as strawberry wine You're as warm as a glass of brandy And honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time
I've looked for love in all the same old places
Found the bottom of a bottle's always dry
but when you poured out your heart I didn't waste it
Cause there's nothing like your love to get me high
You're as smooth as Tennessee whiskey You're as sweet as strawberry wine You're as warm as a glass of brandy And honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time

That was awesome man. Wish I could still play. Been playing for 46 yrs but then lost my left hand. But now I just listen and dream. That was perfect and I'm sure ol George Jones would be proud of you man.
Few things in life are as relaxing as getting stoned and listening to JJ jam his sad jams
You are one of the best and soulful guitarist I have heard in a long time. Keep on rockin.
He can play this to a stick of butter and it would melt!
I have never heard anyone make a guitar cry and sing like Justin Johnson can. Truly talented!
How can anyone give a thumbs down all the talent Justin has is by far the best of the best in many years, and i been playing 50 plus years, truly a gifted Man, pure talent
Supremely sublime and wonderful. I was sober when I started listening to this but now I'm truly intoxicated, made high by those stunning riffs. What an astonishing rendition that gives that guitar a voice and expression just like Etta, truly amazing talent. Thank you for uploading dude.
Why do people dislike other people’s playing 😂 just make your own video if you think you can do better performances don’t need to be flawless just played with heart and this dudes got it
Well said, God bless
@BoldorBiker yep
I agree so many haters who think they can do or are better, I use to play at different venues and I ran into haters all the time, so sad the way people are they cant appreciate the music, they have to put you down to make themselves feel better then you.
Yea, why not just click the next video and move on. Why do so many feel the need to shit on things? But, I think it’s important to note that it’s often a small group that do.
@@dmaximus73 it's not a small group of people look around there are to many a holes
When I can't sleep or just want to relax forget the stress and just smoke one or two blunts this hits the spot and this calms me down when mad makes me smile when I need it thank u Mr Johnson
Sir, YOU are Tennessee Whiskey. And I get stoned on your music, all the time. 🥃
Beautiful. A bit of Hendrix in there too. Smooth.
The action on that guitar looks sooooooo good, masterful arrangement
Oh boy am i happy to find this video, i like the way its played and this inspired me more to play and practice this song with one of my best mates who’s getting married next year to play and sing this with him on their wedding 👌👌
Ive had a weekend of listening to his music. I now own 3 empty jack Daniels bottles and 1 empty Southend comfort.
Fluidity, dynamics, articulation, dexterity, signature licks. I would say you have it all, my friend !!! Bravo !!!
You're possibly one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. I am absolutely impressed.
I seem to remember a feller on UA-cam pickin on a whiskey barrel guitar. This fantastic arrangement sounds like something he would do 😜
Transporting. Finally a song that makes me want to get rid of UA-cam ads. They keep killing the mood. This is beautiful through and through.
Your music is very important to me. It keeps me at peace. When I hear your pickin...that incessant little ball of rage in my chest dissipates. Please never stop doing this. I need it.
i got 2 of your bootleg Cds and they sound so good. Man keep on picking. this is totally good music. Reminds me of my Riverboat days, listen to music
I think my guitar is broken. It doesn't sound anything like that!
YOURS TOO?
It's the magic of reverb
This isnme in 50 years😅😅
And in 50 years i am 72😅
All of mine are the same as yours !!! Like I told Doyle Dykes one time after his show"I am going home and smash all of mine " !!
I could listen to this on repeat for hours. Soothing doesn't describe this feeling.
Great rendition and guitar licks.....I embraced to say that I played this live with two great singers and added a third chord not having listened to the original even once...I added D major thinking that it resolved the melody---my singers said nothing maybe the fact that my lead work was good let me get away with it. Thanks my cowboy hat for showing how it is really played and doing so many cool riffs.
Simplemente , un placer escuchar ,semejante músico ,desde Mendoza Argentina .
The man is a consummate artist and professional entertainer but you can tell he really loves music
One guitar, a very few chords, and the soul of countless virtuosos.
Oh my god, one of the most awesome things I’ve ever heard. So sweet and bluesy....thank you..🙏🏼💜🌸🕉
I have the same thoughts
This song has such feeling to it and soul that 5 dislikes is surprising , there should be no dislikes.
Never thought about dislikes, I myself love these tunes, Very cool Eh? Canadian, Always gonna watch, n Learn, Why Not!
who has all this negative energy, that they are disliking things. Just move on, if you dont like it.
