    We just finished the whole thing last Monday. The trip went well and we had a blast. The stopping for laundry is a very true statement. Because of the length and amount of dust, zippers stop working. Its important to be able to clean stuff up as well as washing of layers of dirt from yourself. You need it to keep the "can do" attitude. Completing any BDR is a great accomplishment, but that will never come without committing to get started. North of LOLO we had 3 detours around fires, so there was a lot o work in creating and plotting those routes. Luckily our Pilot Navigators relished this challenge. John and Bill your the champs. I'm glad you guys had a great trip. Thanks for sharing

    all in one go! It seems the magic for me is about day 3 or 4 of a full BDR. when I don't know what day of thew week it is an d the adventure becomes reality.
    It is hard to put into words for me but those who know this "magic moment" just get it.
    It usually takes me 2 or 3 days before the "list" of life leaves my mind (this bill needs paid, this video needs edited, this job needs to be wrapped up etc) and then it is just a. awakening happens.
    I call it the "freedom or awakening"
    This is when I see the leaves individually on the tree or the single tree in the forest and become totally in the moment.
    That is what keeps me chasing the adventure anyway lol.
    Cheers!

    My Blue heaven, you can shower and wash your clothes. All in one go. I bring a shower bag, collect water at camp the night before. Let the sun heat up the water"microwave it" and you have instant warm shower anywhere. As you know, you are almost always next to a river. Learned that my first trip. Also a small yeti cooler. Yeah, I know, it takes up space. Will I use it as a back rest. As the ice melts, use a life straw for fresh ice water. And cold beer or soda at camp. Total game changer. Will always take it with me now. Hold about a 6 pack of tall boys. Fyi. But yes. I like running it all at once. But now that I have seen it all. I believe 3rd time will only focus on thee best parts. Lowman to Clark Fork. Love your stuff. Keep it coming.

    I loved the Idaho BDR. My favorite (but maybe because I taught at the University of Idaho for four years. Or maybe because it's the only BDR I've done without dropping my bike. - yeah, that's probably it.) I did it South to North with a couple of friends. We had an absolutely great time. We also had to do a work-around on the water crossing. It was just too deep. We did sit there for about an hour thinking about it, walking out into the flow, getting a sense of the size and shape of the rocks in the stream bed. No chance. But, the work-around made for a very pretty ride in itself.
    Obviously, the answer to the question is that I did it in one go. The asterisk that goes along with that is that I started it the year before and went down in some sand (when I got off the track in section 1.) Unfortunately, I had my 2012 1200 GS that had those terrible plastic cases. When I went down, it made the case it landed on unusable. I patched it together with zip ties and duct tape and headed, tail between the legs, back home. It's a good thing, though. I was going to do it alone. The following year, when I did it with my buddies, I had a 2016 GSA with Mosko Moto bags. Even though I didn't go down on that trip, the terrain in places was more than I expected in just a couple of places - nothing like Utah or Colorado, but intimidating none-the-less. I would have been very nervous if I hadn't had friends with me.

    If I was going to ride the IDBDR, I would have to trailer up from West Texas.
    Make it as far as I could in 10 days of riding at whatever pace I felt comfortable, then load back up and head back to Texas.
    Now I just have to talk the wife in to carrying mine and my brothers bikes up there, kick us out for 10 days, she can go wherever she wants while we are riding it, and then meet us somewhere, load us up and chauffeur us home.
    Bucket list item for sure.

    Mosquito itch remedy; Take a small piece of paper and our some warm or very cold water on it. I prefer warm as i can take it on my skin without burning myself. Just rub it on the place that itches from the bite. The itching will stop and most likely not come back while the bite is being healed by the bodys own defense system. If itching should come back just repeat the water treatment. Easy and available way of treating itching bites.

    I am trying to final pack and prep for RMR as the notice of this video release comes up on my phone.... But something has stopped me from continuing to pack and rearrange... what could do that?? you ask... No it is not your new video release!! Two things, the first is a flat rear tire because I picked up a staple riding around the block.... 1000ft and I get a staple lol. I have never plugged a tire... until today! I got it fixed and used my little Dynaplug compressor to fill the tire. (about 4.5 from empty flat to 35lbs) Then doing a light check I find my High beam is out.... that gets changed tomorrow... it is hot and I am old... End Screen ?? Yes I would ride the IDBDR but I know that my disability will limit me from some of the things to do all of it. I would definitely do this in sections because it's easier for me to bail if I can't continue. I am jelly of what you get to see. 20 years ago I would have been all over this. I just didn't know it existed Thank you for being an inspiration to me and so many others. I would still think I could not ride a scooter at all if it weren't for you. Truth is good. Didn't matter if I was in 1st gear going 40mph or 6th gear going 20mph, roll on the throttle and it takes off without hesitation.

    • @PracticalTacticalSheepDog
      @PracticalTacticalSheepDog 2 роки тому

      @@davidfalgout7304 if you check out my channel I currently own a 2018 DR650. The T7 is better in nearly every way. Including reliability. I love my DR650 but I recently had the misfortune of finding a transmission circlip in my motor oil. Did a little research and found that it is a quite common problem on bikes from 2014 and up, Suzuki won't even acknowledge the problem. Kind of a big deal considering that if a large enough chunk broke off it would guarantee the rear tire to lock up while riding and potentially kill someone in an accident.
      Plus it's a major repair bill to fix, requires completely removing the engine and generally speaking you have to replace third gear as well as the circlips. Usually a $1500+ bill by the time it's fixed.

    It's a hard dichotomy. On one hand, completing a very difficult challenge (IDBDR in one shot) is good for the human soul. It makes you more confident and stronger (Hard times breed hard people). It's good to do things that are hard and failing is okay. It makes a better person. You will fail in life more then you will succeed, and that's normal. The flip of it is I want to enjoy the time I'm there and not be rushed or stressed. Either way will be good, it's just about what you want to get out of it. Thanks Amanda.

    • @AstheMagpieFlies
      @AstheMagpieFlies  3 роки тому +1

      The IDBDR being so often blocked by snow or wild fires, I'm not sure you could do the whole thing in one go if you wanted to without having to do some detours that are not on route lol
      That being besides the point, as I stated I believe doing it in sections makes the things you do see (And there are many special things along the IDBDR) stick in your mind better, and as a result you derive more enjoyment from it in the long term. Since most people have a very limited amount of time off from their day jobs, not everyone has the luxury of having enough time off to really do the BDR all the way through without sacrificing some aspects of travelling that make it special. Like having time to play in a river, Stopping early when you find the perfect spot, and not focusing on making miles.
      I think it is very important to say that it is ok and actually very enjoyable to do something as big as a BDR or any long routes like this in sections. I think there are more than enough other people here on UA-cam and in Forums cranking their throttles to get the thing done just to say they finished it, who also can't tell you much about the sections they rode through besides the landmarks like the water crossing, the Bus, The Reservoir, the Blue Cabin. There are so many other things to see, small things that you have to take time to notice.
      I think it is just as valuable to do a couple sections, take it slow and enjoy everything it has to offer without having to stress about making your miles for the day (potentially putting yourself more at risk of accident and injury because you're pushing past the point of when you really should have stopped -focused more on getting to the end than enjoying this trip you worked hard to be able to take.)
      Everyone has different priorities, I suppose.
      You do you.

      My sleeping bag is listed in the description!
      I don't think it ever got down below 40, but don't know wasn't paying attention to that.

    I don't see your water filter listed on your gear. What brand do you use? I've noticed you use it several times now and would like to add it to my gear.

    Great job! It is on my bucket list to do at least one of the NW BDR's and doing it in sections instead of the entire thing in one go appeals to me a lot at the ripe old age of 70.

    Does a road bike make it thru there. I have not got a dual sport just a road bike. Mostly worried about bottom clearances and fuel stops

      Nope… unless you’re a little bit nuts and don’t give a crap about your bike.

    I live in San Diego. So doing sections of any of the BDR trails just means longer and longer rides between trips the further north I go. I think I would rather do whole states at one time. Or just take however long it takes, and do the first couple sections of CABDR, then jump over and do all of NV and ID in one shot. That seems pretty ambitious though.

    For bug control, buy a bottle of SAWYER PERMETHRIN, you spray it on clothes and tent,and it last for 6 days. You won't regret it. 🙋‍♀️👍as for scratching bug bites, try spray on cortisone. Youll forget you were even bitten. 🦌🐝🐛🦋🐌
