- Today we begin a week long tour of BALI but, not the BALI you might expect. You see I have been coming to Bali for over 12 years and have slowly fallen out of love with the island. Too many tourist, the expensive daily budget you need compared to just a few years ago, means that I kinda wrote Bali off as a travel destination.
However, recently I decided (thanks to my subscribers) to give Bali another try except this time to explore the 80% of the Island I have previously ignored and go out and explore the 'REAL' Bali.
In this episode then we jump on a scooter and explore Central Bali in the area of Sidemen.

I was in Bali about five years ago. Now I'm living in Thailand but really want to go back to that beautiful island soon. When I was there, a guide told me that the reason everyone's house looks like a temple is because there is a rule that nothing in the village can be higher than a local temple. As a workaround, villagers build mini-temples on their roofs both to worship at and to get around planning restrictions!
Thank you so much for bringing an awareness of the true Bali. We traveled to Bali so many time (coming from Australia) but have always gone to the tourist areas but over the years we’ve found the chaos of traffic, and rude foreigners, have kind of spoilt the vibe of Bali. It’s the culture and people that make Bali so beautiful, so it’s lovely to see other areas away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy areas.

I just returned from my trip to Bali. I had mixed feelings about staying in the tourist areas. After seeing your video, I realize I need to travel north to experience the real Bali next time.

Went there the first time 34 years ago and since then I've been to Thailand a million times, but I never went back to Bali. Big mistake. Forget the Kuta strip. I remember reading a guide book about Bali and it mentioned that festivals were always being held so there was no particular need to plan to go at a particular time of year or anything like that. I thought that was an interesting anecdote and didn't completely believe it at first. Boy was I wrong! The book was correct. Just traveling around the island it was pretty much impossible not to run into a festival taking place somewhere.
THIS is the Bali I am most excited to see! I'm sure I'll enjoy a day at a beach club but the incredible beauty of the landscape and the culture is just out of this world. Really looking forward to seeing what other gems you find outside the tourist trap!
Your drone shots over the Sidemen rice terraces are just across the river from where I stayed! Absolutely incredible part of the world. Glad you got to go back and see past the off-shore Australian colony that is the south of Bali!
Bali has more than 10 waterfalls like Sekumpul Waterfall, Aling Aling waterfall, etc. But if you go to East Java, the biggest waterfall is Tumpak Sewu waterfall in Lumajang Regency. Besides, you can visit Ijen Crater and Mount Bromo too.
I spent a week in northern Bali 13 years ago. Your video reminded me why I loved it so much. Now I must go back. Thanks Paddy! PS, Don’t forget to take in some gamelan music.

I did a couple of months there and was hesitant at first with similar thoughts to yours about the south. But even staying in the south as well as the "Midlands" (!) and the North I really think you can totally find and make your own version of Bali. In many ways it's it's greatest strength that almost anyone could find a way to be happy there. Magical place. ❤

There is a reason why westerners only visit Bali in Indonesia.
It’s quite obvious.
Why many Indonesians simply don't understand why Bali is so much more popular than the rest of Indonesia? Balinese hinduism (spiritual, more open minded religion) that you cannot find in the rest of Indonesia!
Do you think Australians go to Bali for the beautiful beaches or diving? They have much wider and cleaner beaches and huge coral reef area than most of Indonesia!
Why do you think people from other south east asia countries also flock to Bali even they have better and cheaper islands themselves? What some of them going to Bali is for that incredible culture and architecture in resorts, temples, restaurants and cafes. You hardly find those statues and exotic drawings in the rest of Indonesia because they are haram!
I have been to Sumatra, Java, Lombok and some Riau islands, they are only good for 1 or 2 times visit, same like Phuket (yuck!), Koh Samui and Boracay (boring). With Bali, I have been 50 times and counting!

I have lived in Bali for many years and it's still surprised me that there are many beautiful places which I haven't explored.. As an Indonesian, I must say the real appeal of Bali is the safe feeling that I couldn't get in other part of Indonesia.

I would love to know how you fund your adventures...also more info about bike travel and what to do and what not to do. Just got my bike licence and I can feel bike travel is happening in the future. Your vlogs are so inspiring
Those Balinese places with their own temple are usually not private houses, but compounds for extended families, from grannies to babies and everything in between. Many young people can't afford to rent somewhere of their own, so they stay in their compound as long as is needed. When a couple gets married, the wife usually moves to the compound where her husband and his extended family lives. Even when people get their own house or apartment eventually (but many don't want to, except when their place of work is too far away), they return to their compound several times per year for religious ceremonies. Family life is very important in Bali, like it is in Thailand for example.

I was there in 1972 and 1993. No comparison. So commercialised now. In 1972 the women wore the beautiful batik sarongs and there were no motorcycles to disturb the peace.
I’m so glad to see a travel blog showing how beautiful Bali is. Not the insta version, the real version. I’ve visited Sideman (and adore the area) but really looking forward to the next few as I’m guessing you’ll be going to places I haven’t yet seen. I’m off to Bali in a week and already thinking about changing my itinerary.
