    I like your testing of stove fuel. Hard to believe the HEET was the best, as I would think that stove fuel would be best. I was WRONG !!! I have used HEET for winterizing my fuel in my car. Worked really well for that application. So this product is a very versatile liquid fuel. My friend stated to me he used 100 percent grain alcohol and stated that this fuel is best but the cost is just crazy expensive. But it burned the hottest and most certainly cleanest from what he tested. I am surprised the stove fuel did not come up to the standard of HEET. The cost was also great too.
    Nice video with great information on the true actual products. Look forward to more great video with actual substance that is tried and true. Well done fella. vf

    Good experiment. I have been using alcohol stoves for over 10 years now. I use Methyl Hydrate. Basically denatured alcohol. The Heet here is expensive if you can find it. Methyl Hydrate is my choice for time and price. Very informative video......Take care, Bluefin.

      The big problem with a video like this, is that you have to get what's available AND affordable in your area. Last year they made a boo boo at Walmart and had four packs of HEET on sale for $1.50. Guess how much HEET I have now....

    Great video FB. I use Methyl Hydrate 🇨🇦 because it’s easy to get here, it also burns very clean. Didn’t really care for the mess some of those made. May as well fire up a stick stove if I have to clean the bottom of the pot. About 50% of the time I’m using a FireBox Nano 🔥with a Trangia Burner it’s my favourite combo. After that it’s a Hiram cat stove, wood or once in a while the old MSR.

    • @YourOldPalFernbark

      How much do you pay for it? It cost 9 for 32oz on Amazon, which is pretty pricey. I usually use a trangia, or fuel tabs (esbit), or wood burner. I have also been using a MSR style stove that I bought adapters for so I can use green propane bottles.

    On my stove it boiled my water ( coffee pot size ) and still had flame afterwards I have a Colemans single burner stove that works for 20 years now no issues But i like having a back up That saves time making a fire Or standing there in the rain..people Dont use these inside a house ...

    Ethanol by itself burns cleanly. That soot must come from whatever is added to make it gel. Nice science, a bit surprising that HEET was quickest. Methanol produces fewer BTUs than ethanol, so the gel stuff must slow the combustion of the ethanol. I'd actually expected the blends to do better than HEET.
    I guess cost depends on season and location, right? Here in FL, HEET is like Adamantium.

    • @YourOldPalFernbark
      @YourOldPalFernbark  3 роки тому

      I got a killer deal on the HEET. So the price may be a little skewed. Still, it is cheaper here than Denatured alcohol. I used HEET three days ago, and it really will make a pot boil. I was super bummed about the gels.

  • @PSPSMITH2022

    Where the mystery Wal-Mart "Alcohol Stove Fuel" had those results, and given the reduced price, I very much suspect it is simply denatured alcohol that has been diluted to 10% water by volume (or they sourced cheaper alcohol with a higher water content). I know the Trangia alcohol stoves recommend diluting alcohol fuel with water up to 15% max to help reduce soot (if that's an issue.) Since diluted denatured alcohol would have more water and less fuel per volumetric unit than that same volumetric unit of undiluted denatured alcohol, that might explain the shorter overall burn time. I didn't catch the boil time for the Wal-Mart alcohol stove fuel in the video, but my guess is that it took slightly longer than the denatured alcohol. You may also be getting a bit of incomplete combustion with the denatured alcohol and alcohol stove fuel in this experiment where they are just burning in a fully-opened can. I've been using a Trangia alcohol stove for years and almost never see the flame, but get some impressive burn times and fuel efficiency with E90/E95 ethanol. The pin holes/jets might help with preheating and directing vapors better for more complete oxidation of the fuel.

    • @YourOldPalFernbark
      @YourOldPalFernbark  4 роки тому +1

      I did not use an ideal stove for all the fuels, but I wanted to use a stove that could accommodate the gels. The basic point was to give a base line for all the different types. The HEET outperformed pretty much everything especially considering the cheap price. If you put HEET in a trangia style, it should still burn longer for less than denatured or "stove" alcohol.

      Yes, it’s safe. Heet is not pyrophoric. But if you’rs still concerned, put Heet in your new bottle of choice (I’d recommend a squeeze bottle by Vargo, Trangia’s cool fuel bottle or a Nalgene squeeze bottle) and then take it outside and sit it in the sun. Then check on it. Shake it up. Invert it. Open and close it. Leave out there in sun for a day. If it hasn’t ignited (and it won’t), you’re good.

    Ethanol is made from corn which is made from fertilizer that is made with natural gas. Methanol is made from natural gas.

    Great review, this helps a lot, thank you. Also be careful playing the radio in the background on your videos. A channel strike would be the least of your worries compared to a Re-broadcasting fine or a lawsuit from the owner of that song.

      I've gotten hit a couple times for it. Usually they just monitize your video, and do not give you the cash.

    Heet is methanol. Methanol is used to " denature " ethanol so you won't attempt to drink it or sell it for such.

  • @rottvang

    heet was good. Denatured alcohol is the got today. But heet is a good deal. $1.50 at Walmart. DA was $6.

      The trick is to buy HEET in the spring when it goes on sale. Even full price, it is a better deal than DA.

    🤔...So methanol it's the winner... 🤨...What about that some say that it's toxic for cooking...?

    • @YourOldPalFernbark
      @YourOldPalFernbark  2 роки тому

      Don't drink it for sure. Don't know about cooking. Probably don't roast a wiener on a stick over it.

    Please, turn off the background music! Many folks have hearing difficulties, thus while
    concentrating on your voice they must also concentrate on tuning out the music; it is very
    frustrating. We came to hear you, not to fight background music which quickly becomes
    extremely annoying, distracting, and intrusive. It is beyond me why UA-cam content creators
    think playing background music over the presenter's voice is somehow enhancing their videos.
    Your background music ruins an otherwise exceptionally good presentation.
