T&T has long been known for making some of the finest saltwater fly rods on the market. The Exocett is a saltwater series we know and love here at Trident and the Zone is a more recent mid-priced saltwater rod series that has been well-received by the fly fishing industry in general. The Paradigm breaks the T&T saltwater rod mold and marks T&T's entry into the small water, moderate action dry fly market.
Or does it? Does the name sound familiar? It should... this isn't the first time T&T has made a rod series called the Paradigm. Over 20 years since the original Paradigm, T&T has remade a classic to fit contemporary fly fishing. It seems like many major rod manufacturers have come out with moderate action dry fly-specific rods in the last few years. The Paradigm is T&T's lightweight trout rod for small streams, small flies, and finesse-style fishing. But how does it compare to other trout rods on the market? Watch Ben's review to find out.

The more advanced I get at casting the more I prefer moderate actions rods
maybe it’s just me but I can’t remember the last time I picked up a fast action rod for trout situations

probably because you (start to) understand the minimalism in force that is needed to get the fly line do what you want to do. With this in mind a moderate (or even soft) action rod is a pleasure to cast

Maybe that is just because you grew up. I have always liked ultra fast action fly rods but lately I came back to more moderate action fly rods. It feels like I got back to my fly fishing beginnings and it is really great. Which moderate action fly rods do you like?

Imo, T&T and RL Winston craft the most aesthetically pleasing non - custom fly rods.

I wonder if the gloves made the rod feel heavy?

Hi Ben, I know that Cortland Big Sky and Cortland Brook have been discontinued for some time already. But I would like to see how these fly rods perform to the new Horizon II and Trout LL. I contacted a Cortland dealer in our country and he still has Cortland Brook 8´ 4wt to offer for sale. I have this one in 8´6" 5wt and I really like it. I can use it on the mid size river pretty well for fishing the drys, wets and nymphs. But in 8´ 4wt it is not suitable for mid size river otherwise I would buy it right off the bat. But as the most versatile I would still go with 9´ 5wt. By the way, what do you think of the discontinued G. Loomis GLX Streamdance 9´ 5wt? If you share with me the experience with this one, then I will share mine with you... I was really disappointed with this one although it has a perfectly tuned action, casts nicely at long ranges and is perfectly balanced having the lowest swing weight of all fly rods I had ever had. Next time I will tell you the rest - what disappointed me. Petr from Czech, Europe...

wich is your moderate action rod top pick? ive tried probably over 100 different troutrods and my Sage sp 5 weight from the early 90's is stil the hands down best troutrod i have ever casted with. and i take it with me on almost every fishing trip. im looking for a 4 weight now and thats why i checked out this video

You have an interesting take on this rod. I have been fly fishing all my life and since when do we need to double haul when fishing dry flies? You are saying that those that like to double haul may not like this rod. I have been a fast action rod proponent for many years but.....there is a limit when designing a rod. Wouldn't you want a rod that does the work for you and not have to load the rod with maximum effort? To me that would be the ultimate! An effortless cast with good to excellent line speed. Rods that are too fast wont give you this quality. To really tell how a rod casts is with a single stroke of the rod.....with no haul (double or single).

Most of the advanced anglers I know double haul when dry fly fishing.

What is the difference between this and the Avantt. I though the Avantt was the top of the T&T line?

    • @caseycravens7062
      @caseycravens7062 2 роки тому

The Avantt is a faster action rod, the fast end of medium or the slow end of fast.

Well, I have just tried to look up a video review of Cortland Brook 8´6" 5wt fly rod... I did not find it... Don´t you think that that beautiful fly rod is worth of it although is cheap and was made in China? Or Cortland Big Sky review? Have you casted any of these already?

Damned by faint praise. If that wasn’t your intention, I got that impression because of your lackluster down-played, yawning, seen-it-all vocal delivery. I feel that once you get more miles behind you, you’ll be able to appreciate more subtle qualities everywhere. I suspect that were you to get this rod into the hands of the quiet, humble artisans who hand-build beautiful green rods in Twin Bridges, they would truly admire its workmanship, smile and gracefully sing its praises. Hopefully, in 25 more years, when you listen to your own reviews and tone, you’ll cringe.

The Paradigm is a great dry fly-oriented rod, and the score reflects that. Thanks for your response!

@@Tridentflyfishing Could you explain how you calculate swing weight? I've yet to see an explanation that'd yield an objective, quantifiable measurement. The Yellowstone Angler, for example, balances a rod on a styrofoam peanut and pushes down on the tip while the rod is on a scale. There is no way that is consistent. I've also seen "mathematical" formulas on Sexy Loops, but I don't think their method works either.

Definately that fly rods price go up, T&T expensive rod for this rods range. Only is a big fans will buy this rod for fishing small streams.

Just my take being a former guide but I'm going to puke the next time I hear the current generation go on and on about swing weight. This is a light rod period.
I own the whole Paradigm series and they compete with other modern rods in the same category (medium action trout rods) in every category. Things like casting feel, action, presentation, and fishibility (mending, tippet protection, etc) are way more important than swing weight to me. I feel these other attributes far to often get overlooked compared to swing weight and being the fastest rod out there. Don't get me wrong a super low swing weight rod is nice after casting all day, but in my experience the new Paradigms all have low swing weights. I also wonder as a poster commented above if the gloves had anything to do with the heavier swing weight opionion which is definitely not in line with my personal experience.
Also these rods will through double nymph rigs with indicators all day long. They are more than just a dry fly rod.
