Great interview. My buddy learned from a WWII vet... Shaolin Kemp... He is red shash, sick of seeing me picked on, "hey, come here".... By time is was 18 , I wasn't getting in bar fights, 5'11" 145lbs, I was clearing whole bars... In my early teen, I was taught ishen ru... You're a wise man.
You are talking at least 60 years ago. Hey, Lench ... Sssssssss! Remember Neptune Avenue and Ocean Parkway and of course, Brighton Beach, Bay 2. RA give me your name and email and I'll put you on my mailing list.
@@HanshiStephenKaufman Hanshi Kaufman, We met when You visited us at Grand Master Lenchus' underground dojo in Manhattan in the mid to late 70s. I was fairly new there, coming from very traditional Japanese Sensei who had died. That day Sensei Lenchus Introduced You as Sensei Kaufman, aka the Snake. We had heard stories about you. You taught class that day. I remember thinking: This Man is smooth like his "animal" namesake. You moved fast and hard and that was no easy class. You said: Warriors are made from the inside out. After class some left with PTSD and didn't come back. I was like, this is real. Be a warrior mentally, physically and spiritually. Move like you mean it, every move is real, no excuses. Can I DM You my email?
Thank you, Lena. I will definitely get back to you through your site and facebook. And you certainly may consider Lennie Tristano a Hanshi. ;-) Best Steve Kaye
Hanshi, this is a great interview, and I found that what you are saying is directly related to music, and to improvising in particular. This is what Lee Konitz, my teacher (and a Hanshi himself, may we say) is talking to me about. I was very pleasantly surprised that you are interested in Tristano. Thank you! I will be at iBeam Brooklyn March 23, at 8.30, with Russ Lossing, Cameron Brown and Billy Mintz, if you are free to join us!

Who remembers when Hanshi was known as "The Snake?" Ask those of Us from the Lenchus Legend.

The Hanshi could like totally destroy Chuck Norris. Or anyone in the galaxy.
Don't mess with the Hanshi. He's the man.
