Not always even a pregnant bride. My family is from Appalachia and there were many promised weddings from birth that ended up with shotguns involved...I know, I attended a couple!

I started to imagine an alternative reality, one in which I was pissed off at this violation of my sister and I arrive at the wedding hell-bent on revenge."

Interesting. I always thought he was actually referring to his sister and not his sis-tah. I do think Billy Idol was imagining something a little deeper and darker than he admits here. There seem to be some incestuous overtones the way he's talking down to her now and her new "little husband." Like, you know I've been gone, but you also know we've shared a lot of beds together growing up and that you really "want" me. I'm the one you dream of and the delusion of a perfect marriage will end again. I also image this isn't her first time at the alter, which accounts for some of his cynicism. But she's rather as disturbed as he is. None of this is to say he actually thought this about his own sister, just that he let the perversions in his mind out for a little walk when writing the lyrics. And nobody say I'm projecting!
My granny had a shotgun wedding. Her suitor took her on a buggy ride and they were gone too long. She said when they got back her daddy was on the porch with a shotgun in his lap and a preacher by his side. She was 13. They stayed married until he died of old age, then she got remarried at the age of 80. ✌️

In 1984 when I was just 17 I briefly met Billy Idol and it's a moment I've never forgotten. I've been a fan since I was 15 and he's still putting out great music. This will always be my favorite song by him!

The reference to "White Wedding" is simply the bride in a white gown. The more interesting thing is the "Shot Gun" reference is to a "Shot Gun" wedding. In other words they have to get married and "start again", a new life. Back in my day it was because of her being pregnant the wedding has to be faster than planned.
It wasn't just that she was pregnant. Usually father showed up with the shotgun and made the guy marry his daughter - or die - hence, shotgun wedding. Also, white was supposed to represent that she is still a virgin on her wedding. A widow, for example, should not wear white if she remarried - at least in the old days. Now, most people don't give a s@#t. No one expects the woman to be a virgin at her wedding - even though, I have heard some do exist - lmao.
Yeah, certainly in the UK, a 'shotgun wedding' means she became pregnant so they got married quickly. Nothing to do with actual shotguns.

Any video by Billy Idol should always be viewed either in a live version or where he can be seen singing and doing his thing in front of the camera. His stage presence and unique mannerisms are a big part of his persona. “Mony Mony” is a great video (live) and a great example of this. There will only ever be ONE Billy Idol.

Its not about drugs. Its a forced wedding, which is called a 'shotgun wedding'. The bride is pregnant and the groom is forced or pressured to marry the young lady, "Shot Gun' wedding. White stands for purity in most weddings, seems as if, Billy is being sarcastic about the circumstances of the wedding in the lyrics. "Little sister" maybe and ex-girl friend or his actual sister.

It’s meaning has morphed over time and does not simply mean the dress. In Christianity white denotes purity, new beginnings, etc. Babies are baptized in white gowns, Jesus is depicted wearing a white gown.
Maybe the term "white wedding" is not as commonly used in America as it is in Britain (where Billy Idol is from).

You have to see Billy Idol live or on video to appreciate his stage presence ...like Freddie Mercury. Billy Idol had a bucket load of charisma and was some performer and still is with his latest song Bitter Taste. For a real Billy Classic apart from Rebel Yell which i know both of you have viewed have a look at To be a lover, racy as heck and full of energy and vibe...one of the back up singers in the group is the same girl from the Aha "take on me" single. Billy Idol was different and original and is still rocking today...albeit a little slower!. Thanks for the review

Shotgun wedding is when the bride is pregnant. White wedding refers to her wedding dress. He even says it "There is nothing pure in this world" meaning she wasn't "pure" when she got married. It's a Catholic thing. Brides who aren't "pure" aren't supposed to wear white wedding gowns.

FUN FACT...Billy Idol was cast to play the liquid metal terminator in T2 but had a motorcycle accident and couldn't do it.

Well - a wedding is a new beginning and he also its a nice day to start again - so I guess its basically starting a new journey with the person you love.
Billy was NOT the marrying type. In fact back in the 80's dealers used to name drugs after him like there was a dealer in the West Village who had cocaine he sold under the name "White Wedding". The images of motorcycles driving through stained glass windows and then at the end the bride with exploding sinks and microwave ovens kind of gave you a hint at how he felt about the institution..lol
