So for anyone who doesn't know Jacob, he is part of the team here at Finch Golf Media. What a good sport he is for putting himself out there! Thanks for watching and for Gleneagles for having us down
Great vlog as always Peter. Managed to break 100 today for the 1st time since lockdown. Thanks to you and Swing Quest
Always great to see the team play with you Pete!
Id just like to congratulate Jacob for coming out and putting it out there.
Peter, I have a great video idea that I think would be a big hit with your subscribers. Please have a team member reach out to me! Thank you and great video!
That last putt was cruel……. In my next match play match I will that!!!! god I hope I do not miss it bahaaaaa😂😂
This shows how much modern gear helps us but, at the end of the day, the biggest influence is still the skill of the person attached to the other end. You’re channel content is top notch and always engaging. Great job!
Note to self: never look at the comments before watching a competitive video 🤦♂
@@1993j 🎉
That shot from Jacob! WOW!!! 😁⛳🔥
I've got my mums 1920's hickory clubs, and a bag almost identical to the one you had Peter which she used as one of the first golfers ever to live and play in Fiji. She was a single figure handicaper too. My mum and her golfing colonial mates built the first golf course in Labasa, Fiji. I inherited her good swing n😊
Ok guys, that was truly one of the most entertaining golf videos I've seen in a long time. You had way too much fun Pete, I was laughing the whole time. Thanks for some great content.
Well I don't play hickory's but I do play mostly persimmons and old blades and love to play golf even more just for the creativity involved with technology from back in the day. The sound off a persimmon driver is intoxicating. Thank Mr. Finch.
The absolute eggs on Mr. Finch to walk that last putt in. 👏👏
Absolutely love the camaraderie you guys have with one another. Another class video, keep 'em coming! Thanks for the content!
Love all the content with Jacob and Kieran, would love to see more!
That walk off putt on the last was a thing of beauty
Another great video, it’s real golf to watch. I just love the fact you used hickory clubs, just goes to prove its not just the equipment but the person’s ability who’s using them. More of the same please just so interesting and entertaining.
Thank you Chris and Pat!
From 29:40 and on, Pete you absolutely destroy!? Love all of it. Can't think of a recent video that you've genuinely look like your having the best of times. (Quality golf shots with 100 year old clubs help) regardless, fun to watch. Cheers.
Fantastic video as always! I love it when you get the boys out there playing and not just behind the camera.
12 mins in and u mention Lossiemouth. This is my home town and has 2 great courses if ur ever up this way. Moray old course has a great 18th!
Wow. How good did you play with those clubs. Fair play to Jacob for being filmed. He hit some decent shots as well.
Jacob
You should put modern heads on Hickory shafts, and modern shafts in hickory heads and test them against each other to see which one is harder to use. Good video idea I reckon!
Love this kind of stuff!
I think the woods you have are pyratone shafts, steel shafts with vinyl cover that looks like wood. A softer ball like a Wilson duo works better than a hard ProV. Glad to see more people giving the old clubs a try, gives you a better since of history and how difficult golf used to be.
That putt to finish was just class and comical 😂 great video!
Tis not the wand, but the wizard that creates the magic 😎 great match Pete! Love this kind of content. Looks like you had a blast making it too 👌
insanely good video hahah oh the vibes the banter just amazing and that last put while talking was just class
The ending was amazing. I need more of Jacob's impression of Peter
Just something great and rewarding about using a putter like that where it is your skill at reading the putt and lining it up properly, without any guide lines etc. Probably the best you've played recently because you had to play within yourself due to the clubs. Fantastic video and your enjoyment of the experience just shone through.
This was one of the "funnest" videos you have ever made Peter.....WELL DONE!
Fantastic! Really enjoyed this video. Well done for playing with ancient clubs and winning. My dad had hickory clubs and unfortunately, I managed to destroy them.... Played the Kings Course and loved it. Paul, Scot.
that last put though..... ⛳⛳⛳
The shots on hole 16 were different class....👌 great watch and well played...👍👏⛳👊
That last putt was deflating for we pretenders. 😂 Seriously, well done and it was gutsy for Jacob to give it a go.
Pete is playing with clubs that defined the concept of "fitting". Hand forged irons, hand carved persimmon woods (no face inserts!) means that you have to hit the thing during fabrication to make sure that the loft is where you want it and the lie is good. Lots of bending and maybe some extra engraving of the club face to get the spin right.
Quality. Thanks team Finch for another entertaining video.
Great video to watch, I always say “it’s not the lump on the bottom that matters, it’s the lump holding the top of the shaft”. Some great play with those old hickory clubs.
Great video guys some great golf and banter too.
I've not been super thrilled with the new taylormade stealth drivers, but the Stealth hybrids feel unbelievably good off the face and they seem quite accurate
I enjoyed that SO much . Brilliant stuff !
Glad you enjoyed it
The woods were steel shafted, post WW2. What would be fun to see someone like Andrew Marshall (Marshy) doing this with proper hickories. Scary good with anything old skool.
That was a great shot by Peter from the bushes. I'm glad it made the edit as well
You may have been referring to the chip over Sam Snead's ball on the green by Paul Runyan. You adapted well and made the best of them. It's amazing how well those chaps played with those clubs; like 60s and 70s players with blades.
That's some pure ball striking with those clubs. Impressive, Mr. Finch.
this was just brilliant to watch,
great video Peter, always good to see you play with your team. proves that golf is all about skill not the clubs we use. 👏👏👍👍
Actually amazing performance with those museum-class golf clubs, very nice, enjoyed watching!
Absolutely awesome finish!!
I love Peter Finch! He's the best youtuber in the UK!
The Wood shafts looked quite thin. Maybe that they are steel with a Pyratone coating. Pyratone was used to try and make steel shafts look like wood to try and ease the transition for players who couldn't quite overcome the change in look.
Looks like some are hickory. The woods have coated steel (pyratone) shafts.
@@JeffLeff Yep, irons are definitely hickory, later videos have hickory woods
That last putt had me laughing out loud. So nonchalant like you do it every day, keep that putter in your bag. Thanks to both of you that was fun to watch.
I think you should go play Lossiemouth. Moray course is lovely. Great video
It just goes to show that’s great golfer - as you are - can play with anything. That was really enjoyable. Thanks Peter.
Great work stepping up, Jacob. Natural in front of the camera too
Best golf content on you tube. Keep it up
I still have a Hogan persimmon 4-wood from 1985. I still hit it on the range for fun occasionally, and it feels and sounds so good when you hit the sweet spot.
I am a new subscriber as I am just returning too play golf from a 15 year lay off, I really enjoyed watching this
👏🏼 fair play Mr Finch, what a way to wrap up a match. Never seen such swag
That last putt was epic!
My dad (grandfather) used to have a 2 wood that looked like one of those woods. It had the cross-hatch grooves and was over 100 years old (120 now). He loved playing with it, had it refinished with a modern grip.
Peter, loved watching this video. Your driver and three wood were actually pyrotene shafts which were steel shafts with a coating to make them look like hickories. Still probably around 1930's.
If you ever get to the States I would be honored to have you play a round with my loaner set of MacGregor hickories circa 1920. Hopefully it may happen. By the way, check out Gavin Bottrell. He is in the UK and does amazing restoration work on hickory clubs. He will get you a proper set! Welcome to the world of hickory golfers!
For many years I played with wrapped leather grips. The key is that you have to oil them regularly. Grip oil softens and protects the leather, and also keeps them from getting slippery. Regularly oiled leather grips will last a very, very long time. Mine were over 50 years old, and in perfect shape, when the clubs were stolen, about 20 years ago.
You've clearly gotten used to the hickory shafts over the course of using them, and are showing that good golf can indeed be played with them. To broaden your club choices, though, you need to add a niblick to your set.... It's a handy club with an even better name.
What a brutal outro 😂, some shots on that par 4 as well!. Love to see it
Love when you use throwback clubs. Reminds me of clubs I grew up with. My first "driver" was a 2-wood. No idea what brand, but I believe it was from 60's or 70's. My putter was a 10-iron with a dimple pattern face. And my bad was similar to the bag Peter is using here.
Looks like fun to play those clubs. Enjoy these videos a lot!
I agree. And you don’t need 7,500 yard courses. And because it was difficult to generate loft there were fewer carries, esp over water.
I really enjoyed that video the race for the open next year i feel you will be there
The lead up and the last putt was so tigersque such a baller!
My first set of woods were 2nd had Tony Penna Persimmons.
Loved the sound of them thwack.
I need to emulate Pete's smooth operator swing! I don't know many pros that swing this smooth.
That drive to get on the green was something else Peter!
I have a set of persimmon woods from Louisville golf..their modern take on old school woods. They are essentially a swing trainer. Hard to hit on the screws...but when you can hit them consistently straight...your swing is grooved.
Am I the only one who thinks Peter Finch is producing some of the best golfing content on YT in 2022/23?
Keep it up!
brilliant Jacob. he's come a long way to be fair to him. think he deserves a bonus for that!
Great video!!!
Hi Pete, when I started golf, (I was 16, I’m now 65) my first set of clubs were from a charity shop. All hickory shafts, absolutely loved them. I now need the forgiveness of the modern day clubs.
So, after watching this, I have to wonder... Are there any craftsmen out there who actually make hickory clubs to the turn of the century specs just for those enthusiasts that want that bit of challenge and nostalgia on the course?
Absolutely loved this vid, and Jacob's look as you holed out for the win was priceless! It was worth a like button "whalloping". 🤣
Yes! Tad Moore and Louisville Golf do!
I play almost exclusively with hickory and I love it! You should definitely play in the world hickory open if you want to compete in a really fun tournament!
Yey! New video! Liking it even before I watch the whole thing!! hahaha. By the way, what a beautiful course!!
Lol….simply brilliant,great shooting Pete👍👍👍
Very well played Peter.
@14:50 Kieran giving Lee Trevino vibes from his cameo in Happy Gilmore 😂
I’ve played a few rounds at the local clubs Hickory Stick Tourney. The key with old clubs is tempo and speed. You can’t swing out of your shoes or the shaft whips and everything slices. They are a ton of fun.
Love Gleneagles. Fantastic courses in a great location.
Loved it ⛳️
Please do another with the Hickorys. I have several vintage sets but not that old and it was great to watch how your skill level shone through . 😏
Really fun stuff guys. I think when you where filming in the bushes you were taking a piss
Fun video Peter 👌
Had to laugh at the final pre-putt speech and the nonchalant birdie.
That last putt was so satisfying. 🔥
Excellent video Peter and Team, love this content, Great seeing the old clubs being used and still performing against modern ones, pure class 👌🏌♂⛳
That finish was awesome!!
Those shots on the short par 4 were amazing! Your " natural athletic ability did shine bright like the Scottish sun".
In process of watching but did you upload this a few days ago, as I'm sure it came up on my feed but went to find it and was gone XD
That finish is top notch. Truly smashed it at the end there.
Well worth the wait;)
that finish:Dlove it
Wanted to try hickory clubs for so long
You should try Quest to the Open with this clubs🤣🤣You played so good. Really amazing
Best wrap up ever!
That finish walk in putt just wow 😲
Couple of good shots on 15 there guys. Really good.
Great vlog on a great course and big kudos to Jacob for being a good sport.
Small question; did you partake of the hospitality at the half way house? I recall it was rather nice...
Cheers
Commentary on that last putt was class lol.
That finish!! 😂👊🏻🎤⬇
Now that was fun.
Would be really great to try playing with some old gear… Think I would feel too self conscious knowing I would have to talk to other passing gofers who would be asking why play with old and now none conforming gear. The one club I want to use is the old putter I inherited from my grandfather.
Would love to see more play with more classic gear.
What an epic final putt. Every bit as good as the fake Tiger no-look edit that has been doing the rounds for ages but this was real. 😀Those clubs though. I did not expect them to perform like that.
I would love to see the PGA or LIV Tour hold events using equipment from different era’s, along with clothing from that time period. It would be interesting to see how their scores would compare.
DP world tour done a 5 hole challenge a couple years ago with the hickory and costume etc
