Is SketchUp the Right Tool for Woodworkers?
Вставка

- In this video, we’ll help you decide if SketchUp is right for you by answering the 5 questions we most often get asked by woodworkers when they’re trying to decide if SketchUp is worth investing the time and money in learning:
Intro (00:00)
1. Is SketchUp a good tool for the types of projects I work on? (00:24)
2. Is SketchUp necessary, or can I keep doing things the way I already do? (01:13)
3. Is it hard to learn and do I need a background in using CAD or 3D design software? (02:50)
4. How long does SketchUp take to learn? (04:59)
5. Can I get by using SketchUp Free, or is it worth upgrading to SketchUp Go or SketchUp Pro? (06:39)
We also created some notes, to help you remember everything: sketchup.school/bt7

I use SU Go, and your remarks about learning are spot on. Your video about 7 essentials for beginning SU has saved me a lot of frustration. I appreciate your honest evaluation of SU for beginners. Thanks
Engineer, Woodwork, part time metal hobbiest...
You're very welcome!
I appreciate your focus on learning the fundamentals and not just following a blueprint to make one thing.
Hi John - glad you appreciate our approach! Happy that you noticed!
At more than 3X the price of an Office 365 subscription, the Pro version is just too expensive for hobbyist woodworkers and the Go version just doesn't offer the key features, like dimensioning and a cutlist, to make learning this thing worthwhile in 2023.
Drop back to 2017 Make. Never trust Trimble with your data.
blender is free and way better
Thanks for mentioning our OpenCutList extension in your video 😊
You're very welcome! It's a great extension!
@@SketchUpSchool thank you Alex 😊

Hi , I have 1 query . Like in interior modeling I'm trying to use glossy laminate , super glossy laminate texture but after rendering in v ray it still looks in matte finish only . If I increase reflection value to maximum also . I don't know where it's going wrong . Please help me with this
Please send this question to team@sketchupschool.com and an instructor will see if they can help
you can't make "round" circles in the free version if you are using it for 3D printing. In the Free version you can't increase the number of "segments" in a circle to smooth it out.
Yes, you can change the number of segments in the web-based SketchUp Free version. To do so, draw a Circle, then on your keyboard type 8s (for 8 segments) and press Enter/Return and your Circle will become 8-sided. Of course, you will probably want a smoother looking circle, but this will more visually show you that it is working.
Sketchup is a great tool, but they've priced hobbyist makers completely out of the market. The Free version is far to kludgy and limited, and the pro version costs as much or more than the projects a typical home-shop woodworker would make. It really bums me out.
Great video as usual , but I wonder why there is no promotion about sketchup 2023 everyone is silent .
Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, the SketchUp 2023 rollout was a bit quiet, but I suspect more and more will be said about it in the coming days and weeks.
Because there is nothing to "promote" as usual! Just pay the subscription and be happy

So basically you are telling we, woodworkers, that the free version is total crap. Nice one.
Quite the contrary: The free version is really great for visually planning out your ideas. We just wanted to point out that - like other tools in your shop where you might start with cheaper options and then upgrade to higher quality ones as you value what they can do for you - most woodworkers eventually decide to invest in the paid version of SketchUp to get more out of it.
