  • Securely Wiping All Internal Drives from the Dell UEFI BIOS Setup Using Dell Data Wipe in an OptiPlex 7040. The menus are similar for the OptiPlex 7050, OptiPlex 7060 and likely the newer OptiPlex Desktops and Latitude Laptops.
The newer XPS models seem to use the traditional UEFI BIOS Setup opposed to the touchscreen block UEFI BIOS which was present in 6th generation XPS laptops. A video for Dell Data Wipe in the block UEFI BIOS setup is available here:

I did something wrong trying to reset my old computer to resell it & lost user profile, which lead to being unable to sign in to do anything more. Googled all kinds of options...no joy. Then trying to repair the PC using the tool kept getting repair failed. Set in loop, I went to BIOS to try booting from USB install Windows 10, & of course that failed multiple times. Again googled multiple options & again, no joy.
Then in BIOS I saw the Data Wipe option. Googled to see if it might solve the issue & this video was one of the results.
With one or 2 difference for my Dell system, this worked perfectly. Thank you!!!

So using the "Data Wipe" feature under BIOS - Security completely erases the HDD/SSD of all data, files, & the OS? How can I get around the "Go Health" login? I found, yes found a Dell Latitude 3510, (about 1 week ago) with what appears to be Win 10 (I think it can be upgraded to Win 11) and all I want to do is to do a factory reset on the laptop. Thank you. As a kind of hobby I look for electronics in dumpsters and curbside stuff. Found a Toshiba Satellite A505 with Win Vista 😴 & a Centrino! Unit still works, screen is sharp, battery holds a charge! Do you have a video on how to correctly use the Dell BIOS (?) Recovery feature for a Factory reset? Also, if you do use the Data Wipe, does it (under BIOS) reset itself to "Off"? Or do you have to manually select "Off" before you proceed with a new OS install? Thank you 🤓 also, is it worth it to do a clean install of Win 11, if the laptop can support it, or just go with Win 10?

    • @philipyip1988

Not sure what the Go Health login is you are talking about... If the BIOS hasn't been locked with a BIOS Password, you should perform a Dell Data Wipe and then perform a clean install. The Latitude 3510 should have a 10th Generation Processor so will work with Windows 11, I'd install the 23H2 build of Windows 11 directly. I cover installation on an XPS 9305 here including the BIOS Setup. Probably it will be more similar to the Latitude 3510 as the systems are closer in age, although the Latitude may have additional security features: ua-cam.com/video/k0nydQski0o/v-deo.html&ab_channel=PhilipYip

@@philipyip1988 I think the "Go Health" login has to do the 3510 being part of a network. It asks for ones email (as used for 365) or other M'oft account. If the Data Wipe fully erases ALL Data from the SSD, it's more worth it to get a valid copy of Win 11 & perform a clean install. Thank you 🤓 I didn't review the BIOS password entry

Drive Does Not Complete Secure Erase.
When you attempt to perform a Secure Erase of an NVMe solid state drive through the system BIOS, the system will reboot and report that the Secure Erase process has failed. When you check the Details of the failure, the only information provided is the drive listing but no reason stating why the Secure Erase failed.
Alternatively, if your system has an older BIOS it may report the operation was successful but upon reboot all data is still present on the drive. Newer BIOS revisions have been updated to correct false positive messaging.
Non-Volatile Memory express (NVMe) drives do not support the Secure Erase function. The system is therefore working within the design specifications.

quite a long time at least several hours. Mechanical Drives have a slower access time and the wipe routine for them is rudimentary. Essentially the wipe routine wipes each byte of data sequentially. A large mechanical drive, the slow access time and sequential wiping of each byte as well as multiple passes required for a data wipe will take several hours. Its something I would leave to run overnight.
Performance wise you are best to replace the HDD with a SSD before reinstalling the OS.
