While clarifications regarding the debate's timing and format have been offered (it occurred a year ago, speakers were assigned positions beforehand), a one-sided narrative, fueled by podcasts like "Beer Biceps," (not that Ranveer is to blame) has taken root in the public consciousness. This tendency towards a "wholistic consumption of knowledge," as it's deceptively termed, betrays a worrying decline in intellectual curiosity within the Indian public sphere. This analysis dissects this manufactured patriotism and the shallow reception of the debate.
Firstly, the very title of the debate - a loaded question if ever there was one - demands an opinion on the ruler, deified to a near-godlike status, rather than the concept of the state itself. Labelling those who oppose the motion on a global platform as traitors undermines the very essence of debate. A coin requires two sides, and to demonize those assigned the opposing view by chance is intellectually bankrupt.
The Oxford Union has a history of hosting debates on taboo subjects - religion, God's existence - that would be unthinkable in a nation supposedly on the "pioneering" path. Here's the stark reality: prime-time news in India routinely silences dissent on live television, a blatant assault on the fourth pillar of democracy. Given this stifling environment, it's unsurprising that a platform offering a semblance of openness attracts dissenting voices. To equate dissent with maligning the nation is a convenient deflection from the crux of the matter - the nation is an entity larger than any individual, and the debate's subject is precisely that individual. This strategy of "putting the West in its place" is as shallow as it is transparent. As long as such tactics garner applause, blind patriotism can be conveniently claimed, while dissenters are branded "anti-national."
There's no moral courage in blind loyalty. Self-proclaimed flag-wavers conveniently overlook the plight of university students languishing in jails under draconian laws designed to stifle dissent. While rulers sow the seeds of hatred and division, these "nationalists" become self-appointed brand ambassadors, peddling a distorted definition of patriotism. Comparing farmer and student protests to international riots reveals a shocking disregard for the democratic process. The average Indian citizen, grappling with daily struggles, is unlikely to be well-versed in worldly affairs. Yet, the mainstream media has successfully constructed a narrative that portrays our own farmers and students as "anti-national." Were this energy directed towards safeguarding our borders, perhaps territorial losses wouldn't be a concern. These journalists, exhibiting breathtaking hypocrisy, have the audacity to accuse others of "double standards."
The rise of technology has ushered in a sinister form of intellectual debasement. Critical thinking and reasoned analysis have been replaced by pre-formed opinions, fueled by ever-shrinking attention spans. In this "part of the world," as such journalists fail to mention, civilization seems to have regressed due to linguistic and religious
differences. Preconceived notions of who is a "patriot" or an "anti-national" dominate discourse, leaving no room for reasoned debate based on facts.
Blind praise for nationalism is as hollow as demonizing dissent. Such reductionism is intellectually bankrupt and a betrayal of education. Singling out the Oxford Union for its "White-West" demographic mirrors the current government's approach: dwelling on the past to deflect from present failings. A healthy democracy thrives on questioning, dissent, and a healthy scepticism towards authority. Had these journalists provided a platform for dissent within India, perhaps the need for an international forum wouldn't have arisen. Wielding power from their armchairs, these "nationalists" indulge in racialized "anti-West" rhetoric, promote a warped sense of patriotism, and selectively ignore dissent. This does not grant them the moral authority to dictate the terms of nuance in such debates. Operating within their protected bubble, they remain oblivious to the simmering pressure cooker of dissent building up in the nation. Equating dissent on UA-cam with a vibrant democracy is another dangerous reductionism. The rulers' ambitions extend far beyond securing votes; they seek to control minds. These journalists, with their obfuscation of facts, are unwitting accomplices.
