Red ant colonies like that in FL are no joke. Their bite burns like acid, for real. Never been afraid of snake, lizard, or gators in FL, gotta worry about the bugs taking you out! 😆

Those fire ant balls are no joke.
I got VERY lucky back in 2014 when we had well over 20 inches of rain in Pensacola that fell pretty much in 24 hours. I was running out in the deluge to grab some spare sandbags we keep around for hurricanes because we were getting flooding in the garage and back den. It was night and I didn't see the massive completely saturated fireant bed before I stepped right into it and my leg sank half way to my knee. My guardian angel was working overtime, because by that time, the ants had already vacated...I saw them about 20 feet away with my headlamp...a floating wad of pissed off pain generators. If they had still been home, there's a good chance that the thousands of stings could have killed me.

The red ant piles are no joke. But in rain and flooding that lasts several days, I would urge people to just keep an eye out for snakes in places they normally wouldn't be. They'll climb up anything to avoid rising water so if it's been flooding in your area, maybe check the underside of your patio furniture and park picnic tables before sitting down because they'll take refuge by climbing up supports and curling up there. Or around porch steps and definitely your potted plants. Don't be trying to reach for some basil or trying to trim your potted strawberries or rosebushes without checking around the bottom and actually around the plant, in the dirt. Though my biggest issue lately has been freaking GIANT toads burrowing in my potted plants at night. Not only do they freak me out by popping out like some nightmare Stephen King jack in the box when I'm doing plant maintenance but I keep having to replace a bunch of dirt. Found one as big as a softball the other day.
