Layers combine multiple images or multiple copies of a single image. Masks define which parts of each image appear in the final picture.
Used carefully, you can dramatically improve your pictures while retaining completely natural looking results. Layers and masks also allow you to combine elements from different pictures to create a 'comp'

Tony, many thanks for your tutorials on layers. Good job strait to the point, excellent presentation!
It would be very nice to see more tutorials on blending with layers and other PS techniques.
I cant even begin to ex[plain how helpful this has been. Thanks for the time and effort.
Jamie Nowell Glad to help!
Loved this, thanks Tony. Look forward to the book and more videos, been waiting for you to do this for awhile.
I think using layer masks is the single most important thing to learn in Photoshop. I use them all them time even in photos you wouldn't think it would be necessary. Many people don't even bother to touch up there photos and it just shocks me. Editing brings photos to life. Great video!!!
skatertwig26 Agreed!
skatertwig26 I agree, but it really does depend on what you are trying to achieve with your images. We've all seen some massively over processed images which add nothing to the photographers original idea. I know some of my early attempts at Photoshop look amateurish now. Photoshop has evolved and will continue to do so. It will become more specialist. Somewhere along the way the Art of Photography could be lost as mediocre images are refined in place of image taking skills. A balance has to be set.
Peter H Agreed, it is meant to be used a certain way but I feel like all photographers should learn photoshop just in case. At least lightroom.
Tony & Chelsea , you guys are amazing! Thank you for your great videos.
Great lesson - appreciated the examples you used to demonstrate the functionality. This takes me a step forward, thanks.
Tony, you are the best. This is immensely helpful. Thanks for creating this video.
very helpful. I appreciate that you explain your method as you go through each step. excellent video! thank you!
Great tutorial Tony! Clear and simple. Thanks!
I've only just started to use Photoshop CC this last week and I found this video extremely well presented, informative, educational and so simple to understand. Thank you very much for the effort you have put into making the video
Great tutorial as always! Thank you.
I always enjoy watching your tips and tricks of the trade. Great job as usual!
This has by far been the best tutorial on masks! Thanks!
Thanks for this training, Tony.........it cleared some things up for me.
fantastic tutorial. most videos don't explain all the details but this one did. bravo, congrats, so on and so forth.
Thank you for this! I took notes and learned so much.
This is excellent, Tony. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I love that you didn't edit out the 'mistakes'.
Awesome, great job.
love you guys!!
Just what I was looking for as had same issue with Scandanavian skies. The use of gradient tool was a masterstroke. and the concept of "blending". A good refresher for me on layers and masking technique.
Very nice tutorial! Simple and in-depth. Appreciate it so much!
Very informative and well presented, good pace and clear direction will use this video again, thanks for the advice
Thanks a lot Tony, that was so useful ! I've Photoshop together with the Lightroom subscription since more than two years but hardly ever touched it. Now I think I'll use it a lot more often. ;)
Fantastic tutorial, would have never occured to me to use a gradient to separate masks.
You always give the best explanations; not just the what and how, but the context, the background, the why and the alternatives. Thank you!
You're welcome, and thanks!
I was glad to your video for this topic I needed. I knew it would be clearly explained and the speech easily understood. You’re a good teacher.
THANK YOU FOR DOING A LAYERS TUTORIAL! am yet to find a good one until now
That's a really helpful video.. Thanks Tony!
Very clear explanation. Nice to use actual photos rather than drawing objects. I use layers, but not masks yet. I do understand and think I can after watching several videos. Yours was the clearest. I know I'll get black and white mixed up, but I'll learn it quickly! I,ve also got to rely on shortcuts rather than those tiny icons!
Super useful. So much better than many other videos out there on the same subject. And I like the fact that you show your mistakes and also how to fix them so it does not get too polished. Good job!
Thank you Tony, thank you Chelsea.. you guys are Rockstars
Wow! Really great introduction to Photoshop! I'm really looking forward to the book! Thanks for this preview!
Camila Valdes Thanks, and you're welcome!
Really appreciate the video. Learned a lot. I saw it threw once and need to see it again to take notes. You answered several questions I had about Masks and layers. One thing I know for sure is that I need to get to know Photoshop. I subscribed to your channel and will be looking at the other great work you have done. All the best.
Great tutorial! Thanks Tony.
I thought your LR book was great, can't wait for the Photoshop book!
Very informative and good pace to follow. Thank you for making this video.
Awesome as always Tony. Using Stockholm as an example makes me want to like this twice 😄
Can't wait for the PS book
Thanks for this tutorial!
Great tutorial. Thank you.
Just getting use to photoshop and lightroom...Ive got a long way to go but your Videos really helps. Thanks.
Thank you Sir. I dont get right information after lot of searching. Thanks a lot for your great video.
I think i finally got the layers and masks. Thank you Tony
Reza Molavi You're welcome!
Fantastic video !
Great and informative video. Thank you.
Great video! I just got cc and this definitely helps contextualize layers and masks. If you were doing this photo "real" and not just as a tutorial, would you also mask/layer the water in the foreground from the sky layers? In the finished video it still looks a little overexposed and out of place.
Awesome video!
Enjoyed this video.
Very helpful.. Thanks Tony..
11:12 is where everything goes haywire. The refine edge tool is gone now and you have to use the select and mask button which is a pain in the neck for a beginner.
awesome....you are a Master.!!!
This guy doesn't pretend it's all easy, but lets me know it's possible! e even makes mistakes and then shows how to correct them.. This is the kind of tuition I need! Thanks!
I really love your guide videos. They're so easy to understand and follow. Best wishes for you ;)!
Tony Northrup Oh by the way. Can I have this picture? Just for practice :D
NIce Job thanks for the lesson, :)
Tony Northrup can you please do another comparison of 5d mark 3 and the 5d?
Thank you very much Tony. Can you do a tutorial on using tree option in Photoshop Cc from the Render filter ?
nicely explained..
Awesome Tutorial
I received my t-shirt! It's awesome! Thank you!!
Really great tutorial, especially for people not that well into PS
A small tip - when selecting (like the ballon in the ex) you may want to decrease selection by a few pixels (3-5px), then use about the same amount of pixels for fade. It gives quite natural look, especially for simple objects (like the moon and the balloon here)
Video worth a million for beginners. Great. Thanks Tony. Thumbs Up. :-)
thnx for the video, it helped me a lot :)
Very well explained, as usual, Tony.. Quick question, what mouse do you use?
Thanks guys, my brain had refused to accept how masks work, I think with a beer for courage I can tackle some of this myself.
You guys have the best videos. They are so helpful. Might I add I ordered both the Stunning Digital Photography as well as Lightroom 6 :) they are to be here Wednesday, which is also my birthday! Lol. Anyway, I'm new to the Adobe world, so I was wondering if you guys use Adobe Bridge if you would consider doing a video tutorial for it? Keep up with the great videos. You guys rock :)
Awesome. This is "next level" stuff - thank you.
THANKS TONY -AT LAST I AM GETTING TO GRIPS WITH LAYERS AND MASKS --- THE LOCKDOWN HAS HELPED --LOTS OF TIME CAPE TOWN
Nice tutorial....
Thanks for the editing tips Tony! Is it possible during your live show on Thursday's to somehow send photos your way to get your advice on the post-processing I have done? I took some great pictures of a Kayaker at Great Falls Park Wash DC, would value your opinion.
Excelente trabajo, muchas gracias por este vídeo. Saludos desde el norte argentino.
Julio Benitez gracias y de nada!
That was so useful, thanks Tony Northrup, when can we expect the Photoshop book?
n1rnr00t Late fall! and thanks!
Thanks !!!
Thank you
Tony thanks-- that's a clear explanation for a concept (masking) I've struggled to wrap my head around. Don't know if you'll see this, but I've two quick questions
1) Mask edge. You used a brush to remove that chromatic fringe around balloon. Is there a way instead to select that black part of the mask, and grow or feather it a few pixels? It wouldn't be perfect, but seems like it could be a time saver.
2) Density of mask. Let's say you wanted a subtler effect on the balloon-- brighter than original, but not quite so much "pop." I think you could paint the mask with a grey shade instead of black, or paint it black using a reduced opacity. Do you see any advantage to one over the other?
Thank you again for your work :)
Hey Tony... Great video on explaining Layers. I had a quick question. Which photoshop version were you using in this video? Was it the Elements 14 or the CC version? I was looking to purchase the program but was confused on which to purchase. Thanks!!
Man you're good!
Which program to purchase? As a beginner I'm confused. I would like to purchase a software package (as opposed to a subscription) Is Essentials the best one to own and learn with for photos and book covers or something else? I am retired and have time to spend on this project.
Hey Tony. I remember a while back you said that the Nikon 70-200 F/2.8 was not good enough for your portrait work because had serious focus breathing issues. I was wondering whether you checked out the Nikon 200 F/2. Though it is quite weighty and pricey, I figured it might be worth it for you seeing that you might want to use the D810 for portraits.
thank you regard
Thanks Tony ....... i've been doing some things the hard way for years ..... with this tutorial it's going to be much quicker and easier !!!
Can we preorder the Photoshop book / tutorial ?
Mario Valkenborg Not yet! We expect to be ready for preorders in 4-6 weeks.
Thanks
Tony Northrup, is there a way to reflect the newly created sky into the water since the reflection looks rather harsh? I would assume you could adjust the opacity of the reflection similarly to how you made the inserted moon look more natural in the sky so that the natural ripples of the water should not be missed. Personally, I am a Linux user, and I employ GIMP and RAWTherapee for my photo editing, but I enjoy Photoshop and Lightroom tutorials, as well, as they often point me in the right direction with my software, too, and give me suggestions to address to the developers. Thank you for taking the time to publish this video tutorial for us, and I wish you, Chelsea, and Maddy (Maddie?) a most happy Independence Day!
Tyler Barton You're right, I would have blended the sky into the water in a full edit. Good idea for the next video! Proper reflections can definitely be done, too. and thanks!
came to watch photoshop tutorials, got distracted by Tony's charisma
i want to purchase video tutorial for photoshop cc for wildlife photograpy how can i get it?
Has your Photoshop book came out yet? Please keep informed when it does. THANKYOU!!!!
+houston hardimon Nope, I'm still working on it! 200 pages and 8 hours of video are already available at northrup.photo, though.
7:15 Death star!
Was this before exposure bracketing?
HI Tony. Great Vid as usual.. I have actually used this process for a while now ever since I learnt about HDR and what it was for. I thought So long as I have a good image to start with, why not just duplicate and do what you have done here. Anyway Tony I have a question for you seeing as I value what information you have to share But it is unrelated to this topic, However I chose to post here as I am not sure if you still answer questions on older videos. I currently have a Canon 6d which I love, I used to also have a 70d which I had to sell to fund a trip to Australia. (I live in New Zealand) Well in recent weeks I recieved a income Tax rebate and now have $1700 New Zealand Dollars to play with, and was thinking about replacing my sold 70d again. I have some options avail to me. Firstly the 7d Mk2 is out of my budget, so I can either get a New 70d with 18-135 for $1698, or a second hand 7d for $800, or a second hand 1d Mark 4 for $1700. I know pricing may speak volumes here but just wanted an expert opinion. I do want a second camera regardless as a back up if needed should one fail at any point. (Thinking weddings here) At this early stage in my photography career I dont tend to shoot any one thing in particular so am open to all types of events but in saying that I do want something relatively fast as this up coming summer here (your winter) I do plan on photographing Drag racing events. I do a little bit of video now and then and the 70d's focusing for that was great at times but I never felt I used it that often. But just wanting your opinion on the best allround camera I have mentioned. I am time limited to make a decision as the 2 used items are selling via auction and I would really appreciate your advice and hopefully quick response. Thankyou very much and keep up the great work..
Bought lightroon 5 and lightroom 6/CC. Love them and have gotten a lot out of them and can't wait for the Photoshop.BUT!!! I print my photographs for shows. I usually do them in the darkroom. So, I am starting to print digital with my Epson 4880 and using lightroom, I was very unhappy with the way you basically blow off that whole chapter. I felt there was more to learn. I went to B&H's you tubes and one of there instructors explained how to print in lightroom and so I watched to see if there was anything else I could learn. Well after a hour long session I could not believe what you did not bring up. You have written tons of books but I think if your going to just skip over what you don't do, that to me is inexcusable. This will not stop me from buying your books or watching your you tube site as I have learned a lot about digital from you already. keep the knowledge rolling. thank you
Michael Andersen Fair enough--what specifically would you like me to add?
Is it just me? But every time I watch these post process tutorials, i just end up with a totally mashed brain! Lol.
I can never get these file links to work, and I really want to. It is a lot easier for me to learn by listening and duplicating than it is for me to listen and immediately apply to a different photo.
Some cyber unicorns and laser cats will make this photo even more amazing
First line, " I'm using Lightroom" hahaha
How would a gradient nd filter have helped, originally? Or not.
Brent Drafts It could have, but I find it cleaner to make that type of adjustment in post.
i think you guys have forgotten about the NX1 review :(
I know this was years ago but why not just lift shadows in lightroom
Take-away message: MOONS EVERYWHEAR!
Seriously, though - great video! :D
You can also hit the little chain icon to lock the proportions without the need to hold shift.
***** lol. Good tip, I never knew the chain icon did the same thing
***** Moons with a tiny Elvis on them :)
So, if you save that file as a tiff and take it back into LR, then reopen it in PS, are the layers and masks still intact? Or, does that tiff need to land outside of LR?
Anthony Martin This is not a definitive answer, but my experiments suggest that if you re-edit the tiff file saved in LR as "Edit Original" the layers and masks are preserved, but if you re-edit the file as "Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments" the file is flattened and you lose the layers and masks.
Anthony Martin You can save in PSD and open that file in LR with all the layers intact. Whatever you do in lightroom does not affect the layers from photoshop, so if you change something in PS, and save, the picture in LR is updated as well.
I couldn't help but be preoccupied with the fact that that raw file contained all you needed to bring the highlights down and the shadows up. But I get that that wasn't what the video was about. It would be interesting to see a video that discusses using layers to fix dynamic range issues when Lightroom can't do the job.
hi can i ask a question please i have been into dslr cameras for a few years i have a d7100 but i realy need to get into shooting in raw for editing my jpegs i use windows live photo gallery and photoscape i have nikons view nx2 installed but that seems to be rubbish after watching your vids i also have elements 9 but that does not do raw files for some reason i get a error message when i try to download the raw editer update for elements 9 so can you recomend a program that is quite easy to use or to learn how to use for editing my raw files. i am just a amateur photographer but i take pride in the quality of my pictures and because of the editing i delete more than i keep
thanks very much
David Dobson Sure, try Google Picasa (free) or Adobe Lightroom (better, but not free)
can you tell me where the opt key on win
Opt = Alt
The sample file only contains a single copy of the image. How can we use it to follow along?
Al Carnali Make a virtual copy in Lightroom, as I show in the beginning. Or, do the same thing in whatever raw processor you use.
Tony Northrup Opps. My mistake. Looks like I need to pay closer attention. Sorry.
