  • I was back in Atlanta to present at a conference, and I decided to take the opportunity to shoot a video at the Marriott Marquis, designed by John Portman. I shot one of my very first videos at this same location 6 years ago when I was just staring to make videos. Both videos are about gaining confidence in your self as a growing designer.
    Check out the original here:

This is the thing that is NOT taught in schools. Granted, every firm is different, but more can be done to prepare students for when they graduate and work at a firm. Technical drafting and design is something that is not widely taught in schools. The emphasis, for the most part, has been on pushing the conceptual envelope as opposed to designing something that can be realistically built. I’ve been told by many architects and construction managers that while creating a “great looking design “ is nice, they care more about the ability to draft construction documents, effectively and efficiently. I’ve been told that if you know how to perform technical drafting and design, well, you can get work at practically any firm, regardless of economic conditions.

This is definitely a topic that we need to talk more about. I am fortunate to work in a small firm and have a good relationship with my boss. During the interview and he gave me a test about architect & construction. I probably knew 20% of it. He hired me nonetheless. He said I showed that I was willing to learn. That was 5 years ago.
I am licensed now BUT there are a ton of things to learn in this field. Ask, admit it when you don’t know it, and be willing to be corrected. People are more willing to teach than you think. Good stuff, Drew!

Good video. Appreciate the advice. I expected this. I already feel like this in school. So.... I guess I'm already prepared 😆

@@DrewPaulBell Appreciate it. Actually working on tech class work at midnight right now. Just playing videos in the background as I render stuff.
Hadn't gone that far back in your videos before. Watched alot. Basically eveything you say is dead on accurate.
So, I appreciate it. 😁 Your channel videos are short, not super edited, and are real.
Even though your setup is just you talking to a camera.... it works.

I am inspired by the variables you presnet within the frame work of architecture. You are quite compelling as an evolving architect of life commentator......experiencing your wisdom is refreshingly authentic......in real time! Thanks DPB.......you are illuminated.d.

I'm not sure if you or someone else mentioned something like this but, is there a difference between architect, and architectural engineering? They sound like they should be two different things but idk.

studying to be a canadian technologist then maybe architect later. it's gonna be a long road to the level of knowledge that you're at. the biggest thing for me i think will be getting work during the summer somewhere to apply the knowledge that i'm learning i think if i can do that it'll really help me excel later as i finish my schooling

I had to prioritize some major life goals like getting my architecture license and moving to New York City. But I got the license and I’ve been in the city for about a year now. I’m settling in, and I’m excited to be making videos regularly again!

Oh. I understand what you’re saying now... actually people, for the most part live in cities. Something like 50% of people on earth live on 1% of the land surface of the earth. The other 50% live spread out over the remaining 99% of the land on earth. So there is plenty of space left. If you google image search population distribution you can visualize how humans only live in small clusters compared to the total size of the earth.
