The moment he took his mask off was so chilling. She and the audience realized at the same exact moment that he had no intention of her surviving the night

@@mr.l5783 Usually I would agree but him removing the mask as a sign that he's so determined on killing her that night so it's not a threat to him that she now knows what he looks like and could technically identify him for the police later makes him appear much more dangerous in my opinion.

That's my favourite thing about the movie, that dude could be your next door neighbour and you'd have no idea of his little 'hobby'. He just looks so unassuming. It's like when Michael Myers was unmasked in the original Halloween and he was revealed to be just a normal looking young man.

as a deaf person, i have avoided this movie like the plague. It took me too long to work up the nerve to watch a quiet place. I think horror movies that play into a lack of senses or work in a disability without being directly exploitative of said disability are severely overlooked and are just as, if not more, impactful to those who don't know what it's like to experience fear through that lens. While I still haven't seen Hush, I will FOREVER applaud it, and sing its praises for what impact it's had on cinema, and the conversation it opens up about not only deaf/hoh awareness, but also alternative film making (like mike's idea of a silent film? bro I would lose my mind. Or even a film that leans heavily into the silence, and only provides ambiance noises, active dialogue, shuffling, etc. Similar to A Violent Nature!!!) and the ability to include disabled people in horror narratives without being exploitative, dehumanizing or villainizing. Absolutely phenomenal.

    • @tylerdavis3
      @tylerdavis3 18 днів тому

I have a question, in the scene he shows at 7:54 wouldn’t you be able to feel the impacts of the girl hitting the door to get your attention? I feel like it would be obvious because houses carry vibration pretty well, especially when someone is banging on something but obviously I’m not deaf so I wanted to see your perspective.

This movie is so great, and it reminds me of the classic "Wait Until Dark," where Audrey Hepburn plays a blind woman whose home is invaded by robbers and she uses her disability and the things she's done to overcome it to fight back. It's even better as a stage play with some moments that make an audience just gasp at what happens.

Using pieces of her life living with a disability to win the final showdown is badass. RIP Josh. One of the only intelligent horror movie side characters. Having it be her making noise distracting him for a second leading to his death is way more tragic.

Also had to say that Midnight Mass and Haunting of Hill House were both excellent, though I preferred hill house for sure. My absolute biggest pet peeve about midnight mass was how they are dealing with a vampire, with all vampire like qualities, are literally becoming vampires, and the word "vampire" is not used a single time in the whole show. Maybe it's in a universe where vampire movies don't exists or something, but it really irritated me for some reason!

Almost lost my big brother to bacterial meningitis, I’d never wish it on anyone. They didn’t think he would make it… I was 13, he was 15 & he was paralyzed on the left side of his body. And he worked his ass off to make sure that he overcame it. And he did. Within a year. Now, he works out & does parkour, is extremely fit & healthy & you’d never guess that he died 3 times when he was 5 & was in basically, a comatose state when he was in the ICU for months while he was sick. I was so scared. But he’s a hell of a warrior & we are both survivors. More than once for both of us & I loved this movie & had no idea that Maddie was deaf & mute bc of bacterial meningitis, that makes me respect her even more than I already did haha🩵🥰👊🏻

I love Mike Flanagan so much, his storytelling is always so masterful and I love that he implements it through horror. There's so much poetic nuance to The Haunting series, and though I wasn't such a big fan of Midnight Mass's constant monologuing and extremely slow pace, I could see how much passion he put into his magnum opus. He is for me the way Hayao Miyazaki is to Ghibli filmography.

  • @carriemaxwell4695

I do love how more movies in the recent 5ish years, maybe ten now, have included protagonists with real world disabilities that are just as capable and durable as able bodied ones. It used to be, if your character was Asthmatic or wheelchair bound, you were the first one plucked off (and in my case it would be true) but now that's not the case because you've got someone who has to compensate more depending on their personal physicality so they're already prepared to be at a disadvantage when that disadvantage happens.
Plus, real world representation let's goooo! Look at how many doors this opens for a deaf/mute/blind/amputee/whatever kind of person. They're not the perpetual victim, they're people, and they can kick ass just as hard. If not harder.

Bacterial meningitis is truly an awful condition. It’s really nice to see a medical condition in a horror setting that was clearly well researched. In this case she probably would be more likely to have complications from the infection, as the biggest risk groups are at less than one year and ages 16-21. While a 13 year old could absolutely get this infection, it may take the doctors extra time to come to the conclusion and with the speed of this particular infection that would be enough for potential serious consequences.
There is a vaccine available, though it’s not routinely given.
At least in Canada, it’s recommended if you are immunocompromised or have underlying conditions. There’s also certain geographical areas that carry higher risk (namely sub-Saharan Africa and certain areas of Saudi Arabia) and if traveling to them the vaccine may be recommended.

06:06 i actually really like the conversation with the sister because it was so stiff and awkward. It's been a while since I watched the film and can't pinpoint why other than the reasons listed so what a shame... I have a reason to rewatch (somewhere as Netlfix took it off)

I went into hush going "this should be mildly entertaining to mock" but was shocked at how good and gripping this movie turned out to be. Not a 10/10 but a solid entry in a stale genre that i recomended to many people over the years

Mattie is a surviver. Like ive said, these movies can only work for me if the protagonist is just that. I loved HUSH.

I wonder if you've seen Open House, because based off this review I feel like maybe you'd enjoy it! Hush is another underrated goodie hidden on netflix.

Not sure what was meant by 'If this was a Scream movie, she woild have been fine.' The victims in the Scream movies were killed pretty brutally as well. Have you seen them?

What I mean is that people seem to survive getting stabbed multiple times in Scream movies more than others lmao. Ending of scream 6 is a perfect example

@@RocklinGraves I stopped at Scream 3. Didn't even know there was a 6. I guess I didn't see. I could tell they were coasting on fumes with 3.

I really dont want this to be a gneder thing, but we have to acknowledge that BnEs are really terrifing especially from the womans POV. Chillas Art is a really good example of this. And HUSH reminds me of it. Of course, having someone invade your home to off you is terrifying for all. But we cant ignore that there are a lot of violent and brutal crimes when the vicitm is a woman.
I think if it was reverse, I'd have the same amount of fear mainly because you vecomes something someone wants. If Hush as M/M OR W/W idk if the audience would ever really be that involved. The fact this is a supposed weaker being against a stringer one and winning makes it more engaging. If the vicitm was a man and lost wed be terrified because we are taught its not supposed to happen and when he wins its not that suprising unless the assalent was bigger or supernatural. What makes HUSH work so well is that we expect her to be really hurt or even offed tragically. When she makes it and its against someone whos SUPPOSED to be bigger stronger and has audio as the advantage we as the audience cheer. For me as someone who is a woman it adds more excitement when she wins. Its the same reason why at the end of GET OUT the audience is relieved when the main character makes it.
And those who think im wrong should look at the history of Horror and thriller movies. Theres a reason why most of the vicitms are women and why we dont care as much when the lanky guys die and we care when the macho ones dont

I love Mike Flanagan's work and I keep wanting to recommend them to my sister, but she can't watch anything where cats get hurt, which made me realise how much Flanagan apparently hates cats???
