- I interviewed Michael Bloomfield in his Marin County home in 1975. The interview has never been published or used, except for a couple of minutes' worth in the Bob Sarles 2013 film, "Sweet Blues: A Film About Michael Bloomfield." Here it is for the first time in its entirety.

Wow , one of the finest no nonsense interviews I've heard .It paints an incredible picture of those times.
There are times when I hear Mike speaking and it is similar to his blues playing; up front paint thrown full on onto the canvass, no quarter given. Excellent interview, really enjoyed it . Best regards from the UK
We wish you could have put it down Michael,,,,we miss ya brother,,,miss ya bad,,,,
Smart and articulate.
He had so much potential even beyond just playing guitar.
One of the great music intellects of the 20th century. He's honest, critical and insightful; as well as being a great guitar player/musicologist.
This is the greatest peek into the depth of who Michael was, I've ever heard, besides his music. I actually jammed with him at his house. I was too young and intimidated to have a good time. Thank you!
Larry N Thank you!
Wow first time for me also to hear Mike Bloomfield talk at length about anything really. He was very sharp in sizing people he met in the industry and was a keen observer also. He was interesting to hear.
Thank you so much for letting me hang with this remarkable man, this person of such thoughtful analysis it rises to Socratic.
Walter, what a treasure you have preserved here... thank you very much for taking the time to download this... heck of a interview... 🎸🎸
Thanks, Mike. I'm very glad to know you like this and it feels good to believe it contributes to Michael Bloomfield's legacy.
Walter Rimler yes you should be proud to have recorded this, if there is a better interview out there well I've never heard it... it's a shame there's not much film showing him playing. Thanks again- Mike
Thanks so much, Mike.
Right on!
Yeah Walter! This is golden. Mike was such an interesting guy. To hear him say, “drugs will kill your ass” and then die the way he did so sad. This is a truly American music of 1960’s piece.
Incredible! thank you for sharing... great to hear about character armor, now makes a lot of sense ...
Hey Walter... been listening again and wow
so brilliant !!
Thanx again for posting these and I hope you are well
cheers
I just wish he had taken better care of himself, we'd still have him today.
This needs to be preserved
This is American history thx for sharing
Michael really understood the music scene...wow he saw through the stench.
Much thanks Walter.
Eye opening It is wonderful to really hear him speak and in the moment.
Wow, great interview, thanks. Does part 1 exist?? No surprise that Bloomfield is extremely intelligent and articulate but this is the first time I've heard him speak at length 👍
I know. He is extremely intelligent and articulate. I noticed that about Eric Clapton too. Extremely eloquent and well spoken. I don't know if Bloomfield is telling the truth here about his own drug habit though. I don't how it's possible to do heroin regularly and not get addicted. I believe he did kick it for a while though. I'm not sure if he stopped for good or if he went back to it. I thought he died of a drug overdose.
@@Vickytoriahirt1234 I guess it depends on the definition of "regularly"! It's not uncommon for addicts to clean up from time to time for financial and mental health reasons. Addiction compels people and uses their own intelligence against them which is what makes it so incideous. The smarter you are, the more sound your justifications and the more work you have to do to get past all that bullshit. I believe Mike was found dead in his car at the age of 42, such a sad end to an immense talent, he deserved better than the American Medical System which is manifestly inadequate for people without money of which addicts represent a high number.
Was lucky to see him LIVE with Butterfield they opened then Jimmy and Janice headlined. Tennis Stadium in Queens, NY. Blew us away!!!
We were lucky for a while
oh how I miss Marin County. Beautiful place
Good drug user info to know & Music industry biz, & I should know lol
WoW This interview Is GOLD
Amazing interview. People say he walked away from stardom or the music "scene"... now I see why. He didn't need or want it. He did grow up priviliged, but he used his privilege to excel; to hone his talent unfettered by anything; or anyone it seems. No Crossroads moments for him. He did have some denial about his drug usage though; too bad. Must have just got caught up in it.
My thoughts also.
Mike Bloomfield would have been a great author . He was articulate and outspoken. Nothing fake about him.
Thank you for this my friend
"when you know drugs..."
"he died of puke..."
i love this guy...lol.
This is terrific . Thanks.
This is one of the better interviews I’ve heard, thank you. My primary influence as a guitarist. I’m curious, how did you get to interview him?
I have found that most great musicians are usually extremely smart individuals. Michael certainly was one of those people.
he was truly gifted but not smart at all...regarding the drugs.. I loved his playing though!
@@USNVA-yn6cp you can be smart and reckless at the same time. They are not mutually exclusive. And BTW, is it not know conclusively how Michael died.
Angry that his drug use took him from us.
What really happen? Do you know?
His comments on "Idolatry" and "Character Armour"....SO INTERESTING!
This is so good
Mick; like an old queen!
What an American treasure
One bright guy.
He "outgrew" drugs? That's a pretty bold statement. Coke and meth don't count, I guess. Former users should never get complacent. Recovery is day-to-day. Great guitarist. RIP Michael.
wow,interesting interview.
His take on idolatry is brilliant.
Stop the Hate
RIP Mike Bloomfield
Taken too soon💔
he had a sharp brain.What a shame.
Most junkies I've met are pretty articulate. Not all. I know the stereo type and it is true to a point. But I've also seen some of the most intelligent, well spoken hard working functioning people, that you would never know blast a finger of H a week. The problem w drugs starts when people can't afford them.
@@jarretjordan3837 I hate to admit what you say has truth to it........
Irony of this is Sad
You can hear it in his voice: "I got it covered, I know what I'm doing"
Believe it or not he is absolutely right about opiates. Yes they are addictive but the withdrawal can be managed quite easily if it's done with common sense. I've taken every drug and opiates were the least harmful. ODs occur because people have no idea how strong what they buy off the street is.
Judy Garland QUEEN OF QUEENS!..love it!!
that looks like one mckinley morganfield there. that's muddy waters to you.
I read that Mike was found in a car with a empty bottle of valium on the seat, but no drugs found in his system. What really happen I've often wondered.I know this has nothing to do with his great musical talent but just can't help wondering.
He had insomnia, so maybe taking valium to deal with that
I read where there were people in the car who left him.
What I heard from various musicians is that Mike went to a party where he consumed some drugs and probably died. Some terrible people then put his body in a car and drove him to a certain location and placed him behind the wheel and probably planted the valium bottle. And that after all the warnings about dope addicts in this interview that he obviously understood. What a sad and tragic way to go out for a tremendous musical talent.
Hello?..the interviewer didn’t know that he played on Like a Rolling Stone
You should look it up on the internet
He 'outgrew' drugs? C'mon man. He says all the right things, but...
Why no audio here??
Janis's KOZMIC BLUES band struggled to get a good sound . They sound okay on their album , where they could do many takes . But you can hear them limping at the Woodstock Festival . The black and white film where they do WORK ME LORD is great , but they couldnt always find that power . Sadly , her voice was strong that year , but the band was weak . Bloomfield may not have been addicted when this was taped , but it got him later , and wrecked his playing .
still too hard to say goodbye and what a strange channel
Mike understands heroin addicts. Its a choice.some gtow out of it, some dont.lt is too bad he didnt get on methadone like johnny winters.during the sixties heroin was popular with musicians.too many to name . Some were paid in drugs.LENNY BRUCE , JANIS. AND YOU KNOW THE REST.
He was a dope fiend. What a waste. He was so talented but threw it all away.
He wasn't at the time of this interview, though. He thought he had gotten completely clean but obviously had a relapse.
