EARTH MOVING 2,200 MILE 1969 SS396 CHEVELLE L78 FOUND!!!

- This unbelievable 1 of only 400 ever produced with aluminum cylinder heads 1969 SS396 L78 L89 Chevelle was recently discovered in its resting spot of nearly 40 years with only 2,200 miles on the odometer. The car was purchased new in Ohio and then sold to the current owner in 1975. The current owner stored the car in 1981 in its current location and it has never moved. The special Burnished Brown “Root Beer” Chevelle is nearly all original paint and was born with heavy duty Muncie M22 trans and 4.10 positraction.
Unbelievable!!! I’m 72 and in1969 I bought an identical car down to the color from Norwood Chevrolet in Providence RI. They were the Yenko of the Northeast. On the showroom floor was this car plus a station wagon with a 427 and a Camaro with a L88 427. Being newly married I thought the Chevelle made more sense. Sure. I was 22 and making big money as an commercial aircraft mechanic. The salesman explained that the Chevelle had what he called a taxi cab body. No power anything, cardboard door panels, and no carpet just rubber mat. Once I signed for it they took it to the service department and put El Camino front coils in, ladder bars and air bags under it, and electric fuel pump. Of course all that was rolled into the financing. Some weeks I made more money street racing with that car than at work. I won’t go into why I gave that car up except to say I handed my Man Card over to the wife. Thanks for the flashback Patrick.
I'm 62 now but learned how to drive on a 68 Chevelle ss w/ auto trans & 396.i love these 68-69 Chevelle's and my 22 yrs. i Warwick r. i great times for sure.
🤘
I'm 66 now but when I was 17 (1972) I joined the Marines . I was stationed in South Carolina at Parris Island and our DI had a beautiful blue 1969 ss 396 that he drove in each day.
I always wish I had that car. I did buy a 1970 silver ss 396/402 when I got home.
He does have the plastic on the floor which is correct , not putting plastic over the car.
now my 2002 Trans Am with a factory LS-1 with a cam, headers, and gears, will destroy those cars. Sad but true. Mines slow nowadays. Fuel injection, comp controlled timing, oh yes.
@@frez777 but your car will never be as cool or valuable and that matters more than your quarter mile runs 😎
I am in awe that he had the presence of mind not to butcher it all up like they did back then. It is nice to see an original car kept that way. Very nice car.
Those old high compression Chevy mills with headers have the sweetest sound.
Such a cool car, love the story. Blacking out the heads to hide them, just awesome. Thanks for sharing. Imagine having this car when you were 16!
Super rare find! Low mileage, mostly original, quality Chevelle. Good work Patrick!
My Dad had one just like it except it was a auto trans. It ran 12 9s to 13 9s at the strip. Those were the good Ole days as they say. This car is probably my favorite out of all your videos. Thanks for doing these great videos!!
glad you posted this, i can't remember the number of people over the years that have told me im crazy that these didn't exist, in late 69 i put the same engine in my 63 split window coupe, i don't remember the trans being the m22 though. long story about how and why but the owner of chevelle and i did the change together, i had been watching for one of these to show up since several of the magazines were all amped up about it. this made the corvette absolutely dangerous to drive but more fun than a person deserves. what i didn''t know was it was so rare, the car itself was pretty plain looking, not a super sport, bench seat, no stripes, no alum wheels just caps and beauty rims. the times seem right , my car had stock gears and with narrow rims and 7in m&h racemasters with race tubes and screws to keep them from slipping , it ran consistent low 12s, i have a stack of time slips that vary from 12.17 to 12.23, very consistent and very scary to drive, on the street with stock tires in third gear it could get you sideways quick.
Phenomenal. Absolutely amazing. Thank you for posting this. To see an original authentic chevelle is indeed a rarity. That body is so straight. As a chevelle owner I can appreciate the purity of this car. Everything is there minus a couple of tweaks. Thank you again for bringing this very rare beauty to us. When I first started viewing your vids some time back I was skeptical but have come to believe your work is a passionate endeavor.
Wow what a great find Patrick.Glad i didn't miss it.1of 400.Very kool.Thanks
Finally, someone smart enough to put it in the garage.
People forget that in the 80’s these cars were not collectible as they are today. That’s why so many are found outside deteriorating away. Someone really loved this car to preserve it in this condition....it’s not about the $$$ to the owner. He’ll never sell it.
Why is it smart? Cars are meant to be DRIVEN, not put away like worthless trophies....
J Mac We need a few of these ultra low mile cars as a historical reference of how the cars came out from the manufacturer. I also believe the cars should be driven, but there are exception (This May be one of them).
@@davshaw5 Would you rather it be left outside, where it COULD deteriorate after being left out in the rain?

I'm drooling over here. Man, what an awesome rare Chevelle. Great story behind it. Thank you for sharing this find. Wow!!!!
An awesome find!! I just found your Chanel on UA-cam and I can't stop watching your videos!! Thank you for getting these out there, & keep it up!!
Wow....Epic find Patrick 👍😁
Man we dream of stuff like this !! Patrick , you’re living the dream !!
It's nice to see this important piece of automotive history preserved for future generations. That's why you don't drive them all! This should be put in a museum for people to enjoy. I hope the owner continues to keep this pristine machine in its current condition. Thanks for making this land mark video for the automotive family to enjoy.
It’s an amazing car my neighbor had one exactly like it I was a couple years younger I got to drive in the backseat but those memories you never lose they are iconic thank you Sir for bringing them back
Great job Patrick. Thanks for bringing us this great information.
Incredible Chevelle! What a great story behind it! Thanks for sharing it with us Patrick!
I think I have watched every one of your videos over the years, and some more than once. I believe this 69 SS Chevelle is my favorite of them all. The color, the rarity, right down to the vintage Cragar SS wheels. With L78 engine and the L89 option is over the top. Love your You Tube vlog, please keep up your great work. I hope there are many more videos to follow.
Whatching this video gave me goosebumps .I'm in love with that car .lol...me and my brother r big fans.thanks again ..
Sue, you are so right! I had a '69 Chevelle SS 396 back in the day! Wish I keep it!!😟
P.G.N. I have watched all of your video postings and enjoyed every one of them. To date, for me, THIS is the best, most amazing video of a car you have posted. I am almost speechless over this. How amazing is that to find and video vlog this super rare 69 Chevelle. Love it! Thank you for sharing this find. if at all possible, please do return and video it again once the car has been cleaned. I and I'm sure others would love to see how this beauty looked when it was new.
Awesome find ,what a beautiful car ,thank you and the owner for sharing it with us . wow one of my favorites for sure . 👍
Thank you for sharing your great finds. And sharing your knowledge of our great history. Keep up the excellent content.
knocked it out of the park on this one....now THAT is an awesome chevelle and story...thanks
Absolutely amazing. The best find yet in my opinion!
Awesome car, and find!! That car is in my neck of the woods... The Corvette chrome valve covers had a dimple on the rear drivers side to clear the power brake booster.
The M22 "ROC Crusher" Muncie transmission is the icing on the cake, this is the absolute most stunning example of engineering and beauty that I have ever had the pleasure of viewing, thank🙏 you so much.😎
Lots of provenance here. Beautiful find Patrick. Something that a used Chevy Corvette dealer once taught me about all used cars is the brake, clutch(indicative of this SS 396), and gas pedals will always be representative of a cars original mileage. (You know where I'm going with this, but that said, a stunning example of a 'barn find').
Unbelievable !
Always preferred the 65-67 and 69 as the last preferred year of same
Thanks for the intros to so many great cars and stories
Why not the 68?
Always was my favorite car of all time. Beautiful find. Belongs in a museum!
I think you are optimistic believing that car is 2200 miles, interior is nice, but still not buying it. Nice car, no question, but 2200 miles, I dont believe it.
Wow..that superb front end..the quality and straightness of it as you walk around front is incredible..I was always looking for a '70 when in fact the 68-69 front is true chevelle...thanks Mr McConaughey for another trip back in the day!
Gorgeous Original Hi Power 396 1969 Chevelle ! Just an AMAZING Piece of Chevrolet Chevelle History ! Thanks Patrick for Posting !
Wow talk about an awesome Find Patrick !!!!
love the way you do your channel Patrick, feels like i,m there with ya !
Everyone paints cars black , red etc.... that color is awesome . Sweet car . Thanks for posting .
Absolutely insane. Maybe my favorite find you've shown us.
Nice find the trunk was full of nos parts too👍🏼
Love seeing the older muscle cars when their first found and all original. When you set in these older cars I swear you can feel the history when you just set in them, At the age-of 57 I can remember the old muscle cars when they came out of production an were every where ..As a Small young boy My Mom and Dad always would brag that I would call out the type of car that was coming by us as we traveled down the highway.
I had a1969 chevelle SS same color loved it wish I still had it but did not have the 396 it had 456 In the rear-end it was not the right rear end for that motor it had a small block 283 when I bought it and it had the Muncie 4 speed Trans. I believe the transmission was original that is why someone over reved the engine and blew it up. I wanted to change the rear a d motor but had a accident and sold it sad to say !
I really love it in its day 2 / 1970's period look, down to the headers, Craigers, accel plug wires, and coors beer ignition coil. It's perfect the way it is.
An Awesome find for sure, being from Ohio, I can understand why it wasn't out on the roads much. Thank you for sharing.!!
Wow I am in disbelief what you have found, I am gob smacked that Chevelle is the cream ala cream of Chevelle's.
Just yesterday here in my home city of Melbourne Australia my mechanic had a
1970 Apollo White Buick GSX Automatic Stage 1 on his hoist. I was floored I couldn't beleive what I was looking at let alone touching. I tried to explain to the boys how super rare expensive & 1 of 280 GSX built then being Apollo White 1 of possibly 40.
They just didn't get it or understand the significance of my excitement.
Even called the number 1 radio station in the arvo because the host is a car guy even he didn't seem to know what I was on about.
I can understand your excitement Glenn because I experienced it yesterday & today.
Keep the great videos coming.
Louis from Australia
Louis Kats I’m a chevelle owner in Melbourne and I side with you. Aussie’s are caught up with their 4 door family cars with stripes and small blocks.
@@michaelparadisis4076
Hi Michael going by your surname you must be Greek Heritage like myself.
Myself I am a Mopar guy but I love all muscle cars from all makes & models.
I have only seen 3 Chevelle's in Melbourne over the years.
1970 Cranberry Red with a LS5 454
1969 Yellow with a black stripe SS 396
1969 Matt Black with Center Line Rims.
All of them looked & sounded tuff & I appreciated the opportunity to view them from a distance whilsy driving.
Are any of these 3 your Chevelle?
Mid 12s at 105 !! A damn good running 396 for the time, especially if it still has the stock cam with headers as the only bolt on mod. I'm sure that was one happy teenage Chevelle owner back then!!
That's pretty quick even by today's standards. Pretty awesome car indeed.
Thunderbolts were running those numbers in 64...
@@fraidykat yeah all 100 of them. lol 🙄
fraidykat, that's not the point, there were plenty of supercars of all stripe and make that could hit those numbers. What's cool here is a new to the game teenager learning the ropes on the strip and tuning the car and himself to run those times. No easy feat to holeshot that car on slicks and a 4 speed with that hideous 2.20 first gear M22. 396 is really making some horsepower in that heavy car.
@@steveweiman4708 Racing is all formula at this point, this isn't about to get me excited...
WOW! Just....WOW!
That sure is a beautiful Chevelle!
Thank you for sharing. 👍
Nice find, and all that info is great to hear about too. Thanks alot Patrick
Pgn, great video!! It is great to see a car that was bought just to race!!
Epic find! Excellent, I am envious! Thanks Patrick, loved the information. Also, thanks to the owner for keeping the Chevelle stored in a safe, dry environment so it will live again! Wonder if the Chevelle has factory disk brakes (2 or 4 piston)?
Just amazing. Plain Jane beautiful car Pat.
Waited and waited for the time slips. Thanks.
That's one amazing find I would have loved to see it all cleaned up and running
Huntsman52 yeah, I can understand showing it with dust at 1st. Then take a hose to it.
Never been more interested in VIns until now... i say that genuinely. New Subscriber earned
hard to believe seen many like it when I was a kid growing up in OHIO no less thanks for bringing it to us
Its not so much the driving of the cars..but the preservation of them..enjoying your work Patrick!!
I'd like to see the car after it's all cleaned up. She's a beauty in amazing shape
1 of 412, mighty rare and probably worth a pretty penny. Very nice Patrick.
Beautiful rare L89! Really enjoyed the video!
Great Find, My first car was a 1972 and I still had it today!
Wow my favorite year 1969 and love the color! Would really love to see it washed and cleaned
Justin W, WHY? They obviously don't give a crap!
Greasy! If they didn’t give a crap it would be setting outside uncovered
Can you show us your car collection Patrick? I would love to see your car collection even if some are unfinished.
$50,000
Wow, this car has been sitting in that garage since I was born! And this car was born to drag!
Amazing Chevy muscle......great car Patrick ....well done on video presentation thanks for sharing
Whoa!!.... unbelievable; it would have been nice to have seen that 1970 black on black LS6 down south, too bad you couldn't get close. Thanks for your knowledge of these cars and it makes me appreciate my lowly 70 Atlanta built L34 no engine or trans, but do have build sheet. Thanks
What happened to the motor and transmission
@@joshuaherpolsheimer4699 It was long gone when I purchased the body, which has really good original sheet metal. I found the build sheet in it and for some god knows reason I held on to it. Along came Glenn Nichols and it all makes since now. I've had it for some time now stuffed in a building and used to drive it; at the time I put a 454/390 in it with a borg warner T-10 wide ratio, but it can be put together a lot better then that. thats my story.
69 was my favorite year. My first car was a 67 SS my dad bought it when it was new. when I was about 13 Me and my Dad started restoring it I sold it to my uncle in 08 to buy a house .
Hard to believe cars like this are out there. If it was mine I would definitely be enjoying this one for sure.
Wow , that’s a rare find for sure .
Truly a dream car . Thanks for sharing it .
Outstanding! Simply awesome car! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
My first car came from my step mother. It was a 69 Malibu with a 350 4 barrel 300 HP special order but automatic, not 5 speed. No AC, AM radio only, and vinyl seats which were covered with towels in the summer because they burned my legs when I wore shorts. The color was dark green.
@Keith Ling -. My story's nothing special but since we're talkin about chevelles, 🤗 I had a 68 Chevelle like that I bought it at a lot I paid $4,000 around 1984 it look like a black pearl it had bucket seats and a slapstick a350 somebody put a high rise intake and a shift kit when you were on the highway an floored it ,it throws you back in your set, I was 22 don't know how many speeding tickets I got lost my license twice, I love that car wish I still had it those were the days, man women young and old stared at it, I would definitely appreciate it more now.
PS. 👍 I remember being behind a slowpoke going about 15 MPH, so I floor it cross the double yellow line go around Grandpa and then see blue lights (pulled over for speeding, it was a25mph zone) I remember the cop saying what is this racing engine, you jump to 60 mph in like two seconds, funny thing he didn't say nothing about crossing the double yellow 👍
Love these cars . We had a 68 Chevelle and a 69 Super Sport, that needed work all the time to keep it running smoothly. The 68 was nice, not fancy with a vinyl top, vinyl seats ( that made your rear sweat in the summer).
Those old Craigars been my favorite wheels since I was a kid in the 70's and 80's.
I can't imagine having a car like that, and just letting it sit unused collecting dust.
Mike Brown
Mike Brown i used to say the same thing's until i started buying and restoring and when you get all that money blood and sweat in a car and it's almost perfect I'm afraid when i drive mine some dumb ass cell phone distracted driver without insurance will hit me that's why i don't drive my car's much anyway i don't know about anyone else
I'm with you. It seems like such a waste to let a car like that sit. It needs to be driven and enjoyed.
@@JuniorFan08 I have a '67 Olds Toronado, completely restored and whenever I drive it I have the feeling that there is a bullseye on the grill. You feel better with it sitting so you can just admire it. But this car should be covered at least.
Yep. It's the equivalent of not having sex with your girlfriend, St that she's tight for the next guy!!!
WoW! and a Epic muscle car story, bought it at 16,working in a gas Station 👍💖
Mercmad parents probably lol
that's a real common thing, the original engine being a few days later than the build date on the car. the rarer the engine combo the more likely to find this. you nailed it, they have to pull it off the line and wait for the motors at some point. that's my dream car right there... it doesn't get much better than that.
Great presentation of a solid survivor! Epic in every way. Thank you for sharing. During that era I bought a 70 GTX, 8000 miles with no options except the drive train...440 magnum 6pack 410 Spicer posi close ratio Hurst special trans with 123close ratio and long ratio 4th ram air induction hooker 3" headers
Never say never...as a retired GM employee...,during production runs mistakenly wrong parts could be installed on any car. Remember those were the days when lots of human hands were involved in assembly. The Malibu wheel could have been one of those deals.
I agree, sometimes the ss option got a bit vague when it came to the interiors.
Damn...just imagine being 16 and owning this car lol, working at a tire shop I would be constantly burning the tires off at that age. This man was doing pretty well for himself buying the car at 16 and the house at 21.
If I had owned this car at 16, I probably wouldn't be alive today.
Jesus......my mouth is watering from wanting to see it washed and detailed.
That just blew my mind... Can’t wait to see what’s next!

Anyone else notice the coors can?
I had one on my old Barracuda. The small cans fit perfectly over the stock coil.
Yep ! I saw that too ! 👍😆
You got the best job ever .
That is a AWESOME car. Bless the man that left it untouched, that car is Mecum's and Barrett/Jackson worthy
Wow what a great find!! I love Chevelle's. Putting the bucket seats in is the only thing i would do to it. Some one is gonna be lucky to have such car!🇺🇸🦅
There is truly no words to explain how awesome that car is
Patrick..When do we get to see your collection of cars? be an awesome video for your channel!!!
It’s not about my collection but I tell you I got 1970 SS Monte Carlo with 454 12 bolt automatic 400.
I also had 1968 SS el Camino with 396 but cast iron head 12bolt turbo 400
Also1970 Monte Carlo with 4speed 396 and later put in 454 12 bolt 2.20 low spd
For you info I worked at Harry Mann Chevy back in 1974 I worked on all the SS cars and Corvette from 1963 1976
You mean a '70 Monte w/a 4speed 402.......
Your right. They continued to badge it as a 396.
I had a 68 back when I was 18. Triple black 375hp 4 speed and 4/88 from the factory from Baldwin chevrolet. The builders of the phase III cars. God I miss that car.
Without initially watching, my very first car, I bought upon high school graduation, was a '69 Chevelle SS396. That was in '78...sold it to a buddy a few years later, going to college, needing the money...always a Chevelle man!
Amazing! My dream car. I want it.
I agree with the other comments. Let’s see your collection Patrick!
Pretty wild mr. Snell nor I know where this car is considering we've scoured central Ohio for 3 decades for super cool bowties. Just shows you they are still out there. Day 2 all the way!! Thank you to the owner for keeping it real!!! What a car!! Want them how they were driven not how they were at the dealer! History of the drive is as cool as the ride! Love the paper work n pics. Never sell it. Pat has enough toys. Right pat? Lol
Damm Patrick what a ultra rare car! Thanks for sharing!🐟
That's awesome, 2200 miles, original paint, worth a lotta money, needs 69 Buckets w headrests, but a perfect car
Epic find...a true unicorn car.
Sure would have liked to see it all cleared up . What a car !! Thank you !!
Another good video Patrick I have heard same thing from guys that owned chevelle s that they preferred the 396 L89 over the other big bock chevelle 👍
I would put money on that engine pushing right up on 500 hp. Also that time slip was on our country's 200th Birthday. Awesome find Patrick!
Probably pushing around 450 so your probably going to get around 400 to the wheels
@@billybiker5712 Depends on who you ask. Some say with factory iron heads, and with only an upgrade of headers, the engine put out somewhere in the neighborhood of 450 at the crank. Some say 425. So its really hard to say for sure without having an engine like this put on the dyno.
@@1980bwc well from the one's I've owned that's around the neighborhood of all I've gotten out of them with no internal mods

Damn doesn't get any better for a 69 Chevelle nice find

Nothing like a low mileage Drag Race Rocket..!! NO RUST...!!!!! Aluminum heads, M22...So RARE to find the ORIGINAL PARTS all there...WOW

My favorite Chevelle. What a find. A lucky man owns that machine. Unreal with only 2,xxx miles
