Humanoid - An Abandoned Game

  • Humanoid is probably the largest abandoned project of mine. It was a retro-style adventure game, but it was eventually scrapped when I started moving on to other projects. So this video aims to at least document this otherwise unknown project.
Q: "Can I download or play this game?"
A: It's not a finished game, and a lot of scenes from the video had to be hacked to access different rooms or events. It's not in a 'demo-able' state, and I don't have the time yet to get it there. I may open source the engine at some point, but I don't know if it's really that useful with no support or documentation, and I would not recommend anyone to use it anyway (that's already a hard lesson learned for me).
    Q: Hyperbolica?
A: Yes. Still working on it, and I still don't have an expected release date yet. It will be ready when it's done.

However, the odds of that very specific chain of events happening, and the public finding out about it, are so unbelievably small that it will likely never happen. Had my car broken into and had my backpack stolen. I put so many sentimental items in it because I was making a trip back from my childhood home like my first DS, some photos, and a jar a apple butter that a family friend had made. Very good lesson to hide your things (even in your own car) or to keep it on you. Also, don't put all your sentimental eggs in one basket.

I don't know if this will work for you, but what I do is repeatedly ask myself "Why do I make games?" For me, the answer is almost always "Because I want to." That breaks me out of any expectations Ive given myself as I accept that what I'm doing isn't rational, probably won't be seen by more than 20 people and most certainly does not provide any economic benefit to me whatsoever. Also, remember that any projects you complete always look worse to yourself than they would to others.

I feel that pixel art bit- a lot of my most recent work has dropped art entirely due to how much I hate making it. Even when making games that need art, I've found it much more enjoyable as a programmer and a designer to white box everything first, and only then look for an artist to help once I've determined if I like the direction of the project.

I always love hearing game dev stories. I've been wanting to make a game for a long time. I've been making music and art for a game, along with about 3 pages just full of game ideas, but I've made absolutely zero progress on it. I'm trying to use game maker. What I'd love is to just use premade platformer code, but gamemaker feels so much less modular than unity. Just replacing the assets with my own, reworking the engine to my liking, and fixing the inevitable bugs that come from version differences would take hours upon hours of miserable work for me. I've got so many great ideas and they're all feasible for me to accomplish, but trying to learn how to do it, or even find the information on how to do it is so hard. With game dev, I've never felt more discouraged in one thing in my entire life.

how is hyperbolica doing? I am super excited its the main game I am excited to play and i'd love an update on where the development is at, last time it was said that it would release in early 2021 but obviously that has changed? is there a new release date or just whenever its done?
