News conference about deaths of four University of Idaho students

- Moscow Police, Idaho State Police and University of Idaho President Scott Green are scheduled to give an update on the investigation at 4:30 p.m. MST/3:30 p.m. PST. Police earlier this week identified the students who died as: 20-year-old Ethan Chapin, from Conway, Washington; 21-year-old Madison Mogen, from Coeur d'Alene; 20-year-old Xana Kernodle, from Post Falls and 21-year-old Kaylee GonCalves, from Rathdrum. As of Wednesday morning, police had not identified any possible suspects or persons of interest.

Hello, former UI student and daughter of long time law enforcement. Many details must be withheld from the public to keep the integrity of the scene as well as keep from even more speculation from public misunderstanding. It is important to take the information we have been given and sit with it until the department is able to share more.

I can't believe one individual could have committed these murders without any of the deceased screaming for help in order to alert neighbours for help!!!!

Knowing what we know now, you can see the anxiety in the chief every time they bring up the roommates. He did not want the killer to know he’d left an eyewitness! I don’t know when the narrative started that the survivors were both on the first floor but they hadn’t come up with it by the time they did this press conference.
Very heartbreaking, may God give the families of the deceased strength to bear this unbearable loss.

I don't understand how four get killed without one of them not hearing it...
maybe slit their throats while they were sleeping? or maybe only one/two people were being targeted but someone did walk in and he killed them for seeing it. and if they were killed in a bedroom, the other two roommates who are still alive could've been out late and came back and went to their own rooms without seeing what had happened.
@@scarlettmauner475 I’ve been thinking a similar thing. I think they would have either had their throats slit in bed or were stabbed in the jugular. To prevent screaming. The person lying in bed next to them would be just as quick to catch in the neck after. But if each was targeted one by one and killed I don’t understand how no one heard anything and two roommates were unaware and unharmed. that part is confusing unless they have some type of involvement.

@@fulanichild3138 They weren't blacked out drunk when they waited until 11am to call 911 and say "someone is unconscious" but forgot to inform the police that there was blood all over the place from being stabbed
I’m sure they are lawyer’d up and so the police can’t name them as suspects until they zip up the case.
@@DarlingDiana1983 Quartzandcoal had an interesting take: The two survivors came home really drunk. Went to bed in the same room. One woke up hours later and could not wake their companion. Fearing alcohol poisoning, they called 911 to report that the companion was unconscious. Did not know there were dead students in other rooms.

Wow. This story just continues to get stranger and stranger. I am shocked that there were 2 roommates home who are still alive. I believe they must have an idea as to who is responsible for this.

Years ago, a boy that I knew since childhood murder his wife. He hid in a closet until she fell asleep. (They were separated) None of us classmates would have ever thought he’d do such a thing! My gut is someone was hiding in that house or had a key. This is such a sad tragedy for these families! 💔

@@amberf2110 No need to ot really. The room area could've been in their rooms. It was a party, so they could've had their earphones in. Some dude who probably had mental health issues probably dated one of the girls and was jealous of the group. So as the part was winding down he probably came in, rapidly stabbed all three of them and dipped. The roommates would've then came down.
They may not have been there when the murders occurred. They may have been at the party,returned intoxicated (911 call was due to one roommate being unresponsive- alcohol poisoning?)

I don't think it's that strange that it wasn't reported until noon or that the two other housemates didn't hear anything. They're young, they were probably just sleeping late.

They may have and just aren’t giving out that info right now. It could possibly compromise the case. That’s pretty common in homicide investigations. Atleast that’s what I’m hoping ❤

They initially said “no threat to the community “ something police usually say in cases of a murder suicide. Now they say “we can’t say there is no threat “.
Because it is unlikely not a murder suicide. They say no public threat at first to keep panic low when most homicide occur. Media gets word extremely fast & want a statement before investigators have the opportunity to walk through the crime scene thoroughly.

When a crime like this happens there are two tragedies, the crime itself and the not knowing how or why.
The coroner said there was blood everywhere and that it was obvious they had been stabbed to death . Who made the call claiming someone was "unconscious" and how/why would they say that when there was blood everywhere and the person was obviously dead ? Would they not have run into the other rooms as well to see if anyone else was hurt too ?
The only way I can see it making sense would be maybe a mail man or Amazon package delivery guy may have seen someone on the ground through the window and called in. Or there was some person passed out outside nearby. Saturday night drinking and all. Maybe it was the killer who was also drinking and doing drugs and they passed out before they could leave?
Possibly one of the 2 roommates who slept through the attack found them and called 911

Especially the police. I don't think they've ever dealt with this size of crime. They don't know where to begin with and therefore doesn't know how to answer all the media's questions. They probably brought out of town investigators. Possibly out of state too! Who know😟

Wow. It may seem like the officer said a lot but he really didn’t say much. Very evasive. I’m thinking they’re on to someone and he or she is being watched and with that, they are watching him closely. How can he contradict himself? No threat but no suspect in custody? Doesn’t make sense. They have someone on their radar already, they’re just not saying that.

The two students that survived lived on the bottom floor. The house is sort of a split level house so the bottom floor isn't directly under the top floors. It's likely that on the bottom floor you can't hear much and/or sound sleepers used to noise. What doesn't add up is the 911 call of an unconscious person.and the friends that were at the house when police arrived.
the doors to the bedrooms all had keypads to enter. Is it possible that the 2 survivors woke up and thought it was strange that the other house mates were not awake yet. went to go check on them and the doors were locked so they assumed they were unconcious and called friends and then 911?
This is so sad! May the criminal that did this be brought to justice. Only cowards are going to run from their actions. God bless the families of these victims.

This sad story reminds me of the Napa murders where a jealous boyfriend targeted his girlfriend's friend and another woman who lived in the home in Napa. The suspect was caught, or turned himself in, when the police gathered some cig butts on the lawn, the killer did not know another woman was living downstairs and she narrowly escaped being murdered.

@Brenda Easter. The murderer definitely knew that the third woman lived in that home but he headed upstairs FIRST to murder the other 2 women and when she heard the attacks going on she got out otherwise I’m sure she’d have been the last one killed.

If you have any suspects who lived in Alabama, even for a time, look at them hard. We had someone skinning dogs alive several years ago. It stopped suddenly, around … 7 years ago. They went somewhere, and you seem to have a psychopath. Check out crimes against animals. You might track the monster like that.

@@irisjc I think if you have not apprehended the suspect, the way to handle that is to say "The person who did this is at large and we advise everyone in the community to exercise extreme caution until further notice."
They are saying that there was so much blood, so how come the roommates didn’t see anything and didn’t report anything and someone else reported the crime and said the victim was unconscious? It seems weird. The roommates seem like they maybe involved somewhat. They also said in the autopsy that the victims may have had defensive wounds on them.
Why would the killer only murder 4 of them and not the 6 of them?

“Targeted attack” could mean assailants went specifically to the house for purposes of attaining something known to them. I didn’t realize there were other roommates left unscathed.

1- So.. one guy (assuming) comes in the house and nobody heard ANYTHING?! Let's just assume they are sleeping, in order to not make anyone hear anything he would of had to keep the lights closed and target the knife into the necks right away to stop any screamings. Out of 4 people just opening the light in the room to kill them, surely one must of woken up or screamed as soon as they saw the knife when the light opened... they had just gotten to sleep.
2- 2 girls not heard anything? or are they lying and just heard others scream and locked the door and then hidden in the closet until 11 am just in case hes waiting for her to open the door.
3- Realisticly if the police didn't think the 2 girls were involved in some sort, wouldn't they just tell that? they refused to answer a simple question that doesn't hurt the investigation. Only reason they would ignore is if they though 1 or both of the girls did something.

Doesn't make sense that there were 2 people in the house but the call didn't come in for 10 hours - and then only that there was an unconscious person.
i think what happened is that the two roommates were very drunk and either slept through it (maybe the killer didn't realize they were there) or came back after the attack and didn't see anything if they were isolated in different bedrooms. the next morning the one roommate found the other one unconscious and thought they had alcohol poisoning or something and called the police. when they arrived they found the bodies.

Most campuses have cameras everywhere and campus police. And, regardless of the crappy world we live in, parents should never have to lose a child. Period. It may be unrealistic, but regardless, I would hate to be that parent that got that call.

What bothers me more is why in a country where people carry guns to protect their homes and serial killer enjoy entertainment status, why do young vulnerable people live in houses with flimsy, unlocked doors and unprotected sliding doors.

Also~ put the uni's reputation on back burner just for now. For one the reputation is already incredibly damaged, but if people see you trying to protect that information over solving this crime than you can forget about parents ever feeling like that is a safe school to send their children to. Your uni and community won't come back from that.

This is so sad. Has the police seen the footage from the grub truck? One particular person def looks sus as he keeps watching the ladies and stays in the area they were standing and leaves suddenly after he sees the ladies had left. Def weird.
