9/10 www.theneedledr...
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
So Jack White gets a 9 but Jack Black gets a 5? We see what you're getting at fantano...
Ben Sparks oh god 😂
Jackie brown got 110th street
Now this is a good meme. But when did Jack Black get a 5?
and jack jew got a NOT GOOD
Holy shit
This album seems to be the result of Jack throwing away all of the limitations that have defined his career thus far. Instead of limiting himself to 8 or 16 tracks on a reel, he embraces Pro Tools. Instead of sticking to traditional instrumentation, he embraces synths and programmed drums. Boarding House Reach, to me, sounds like the genius of Jack White’s mind flowing completely freely without any self imposed restrictions, which is something we haven’t seen yet.
Agreed. 100%
@@ArchKnight28 It's the former.
its like the opposite of what musicians normally say about limitations, in a way, it reminds me of kid A in the respect that its really different
I absolutely agree! Jack White has already given us all of the standard garage rock and blues rock we need, we should embrace this new and exciting sound.
It’s literally the opposite, he recorded this on an A-track in a studio apartment in Nashville, the album is called boarding house reach because he invited some people over to do backing instruments and said “please excuse my boarding house reach” when he went to reset the recorder.
Anthony Fantano: Lazaretto wasn't experimental enough.
Jack White: hold my whiskey.
Uncle Squiddz he doesn’t drink “beer”
chocolatewheelchair who cares
chocolatewheelchair Well he does drink hoppy urban brewed black flannel ale
Badger Overlord he drinks whiskey 🥃
chocolatewheelchair ok fixed.
It's like when Radiohead came out with Kid A, everyone was like wtf at the time but through out time, it stood up and became a favorite.
Great take👌🏻😁👍🏻
Kid A as an entire work is a masterpiece
@@hippiecheezburger5457 how can you say something so controversial yet so brave
Fluppy it’s true though
I loved it immediately honestly but I get the analogy and it definitely makes sense. It is way more left field than anything he's done solo but I always knew he was a weird dude.
Jack White and Jack Black should do a collab to ease racial tensions.

This album is gonna be considered a game-changing important album in ten years. It's such a grand, futuristic, eclectic and unpredictable listening experience, and Jack has completely broken the mould of what a blues rock album can be.
i feel like everyone has forgotten about it/never really knew it existed in the first place
@@cheekybananaboy3361 pretty much
I really enjoyed this album when it came out but no this albums a lot more niche than you’re making it out to be. Can’t say many people remember it now in December 2021
I love hypermisophoniac because it's supposed to be hard to listen to. Misophoniac means a hatred of a sound, like nails on a chalkboard or something. So I think it just fits so well.
it has so much personality it’s great
funny thing is i absolutely loved it from first listen, it was my stand out track. thats when you know your brain works differently lmao
I'm sure this would have gotten a NOT GOOD if his name was Jack Black.
uncle damfee But jack black makes great music - Tribute was an awsome song.

Frederick Core lol , I feel like I could record an album of noise from a construction site and Anthony would give it a 10 because it’s “glitchy” and “abrasive”

He's given plenty of other experimental albums bad scores if you actually paid attention you would've known that

"It's January 2018 and I feel like I've already heard one of the worst songs of the year"
>puts connected by love in the best tracks

Funny enough, in that Track Review he put "King's Dead" as one of the best tracks, and then when the Black Panther album came out, it was listed as a least fav track.
Motherfuckers want him to change his mind on DAMN but can't do it on a jack white track?
Did this with Streaky off Death Grips new album. Said it was meh/not that great, then put it in the best tracks when the album dropped
GuysOfFilm he explains in the vid that the song works in the context of the album but not as a single, hence the change. Also, that is why a lot of people believe the album is name YOTS because of how many damn singles there were, and how much better they sound in context.
AND THEY SAID MY SCORE WAS TOO HIGH
I'm actually excited to see you praising this so much though, holy shit that makes the Jack White fanboy in me explode with happiness.
Same here, John.
yeah but you put humanz on your top 20 albums of last year so....
Isobel Lunn I was really disappointed with it at first, especially since I was a big Gorillaz fan but it slowly grew on me. Similarly, this is what happened with Plastic Beach as well so maybe it’s just me.
Wow Isobel, it's like you would...invalidate someone else's opinion because you don't agree with it?! How reasonable of you!

@Hubblebub Lumbubwub I say that because a lot of people assume the scores are like an objective score, one that he thinks should be the applicable score for everyone in his audience. There's a big distinction.
Fantano looks happy.Good for him.
I’ve never given a Jack White album a listen before, so I finally gave this one a shot. And I really fucking loved it. Glad to hear Fantano enjoyed it as well.

CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT MY OPINION ON THIS ALBUM IS PLEASE?!?!?!
pitchfork is a fucking cantaloupe compered to antony's watermelon 10/10 status.
Pitchfork didnt review the album, it just took pot shots at Jack Whites career.
about a 6.85/10 if you ask my calculator
I hate it, you can borrow my opinion if you want.
This album made the melon's mind melt and he just gave it a 9 cuz el no comprendo
I actually think this was the perfect album for jack white to make at this point. Experimental, funky and most of all interesting. It was just about time to change it up for him imo. Really dont know why pitchfork hated it and some other reviewers were calling it 'off the mark.' Like, thats pretty much the point of a jack white album, to be a bit odd and avante garde.
Don't ever listen to Pitchfork unless it's a 10, 9.8, 9.7, 9.6 or 9.5 review!

I literally gave this a 9 in my mind last Friday, when I first heard it.
When I first saw the yellow flannel in the thumbnail, I didn't think much, but when I saw the length of the video, I kind of leaned back in my seat and went "oh crap, it's happening."
Anthony you gotta bring back the tree intro. You know you want to.
Great review. This album is the best thing Jack has done since the White Stripes days. I haven’t had an album hit me like this in a while. Feels like I’m listening to some truly new music. Here’s hoping this album is the starting point of a new creative streak.
It's shitty blues rock. Nothing new about it.
I'd rather slowly push a glowing red hot skewer into my ear than listen to this again.

Im just happy that finally we have a divisive album. People love it, people hated it. I really love this kind of work, particularly
in this particular era of social and influencer where everybody seems to tag along the dominant opinion

Silent Forum It is a divisive album though 😂😂😂
Nme give 10 to this album. If you look in metacritic there are plenty magazine who love it, like american songwriter telegraph and others
I loved it too dude. Jack White is generally a hit or miss to me, especially in his solo career, but I do love this album. He seems here like 'I don't give a fuck this time, I mean not at all, I'm gonna make the craziest fucking music I can make', and it works, because it's just so damn good, which won't necessarily work with lots of artists.
Yes, and not even because it's 'divisive,' just for the sake of being divisive. It's really refreshing to see an artist push themselves especially where White is at in his career. Plus a bunch of other stuff.
"Experimental" when I see dis word, I already know melon likes it

Was your thought process Jack White --> Jack Black --> School of Rock?
Linus yes
By the way melon, Humoresque was a piece Al Capone wrote while in Alkatraz. Jack got a hold of it at an auction so in my opinion it plays in with the weird and dark and mysterious theme of this record. The song itself doesn’t fit in with the theme but the story of it surely does.
@@miguelenes6556 he wrote the melody, Capone put lyrics to it.

+Dan Pulka care to elaborate?
aR0ttenBANANA96 I thought it was a great album for jack white I'd say, against his own standards is why it's good but I wouldn't say it's one of rock musics finest albums or anything like that
sure, just trying to get views and come off edgy/differing than whats generally accepted. he's coming off more and more contrived with his reviews imo. he rated that David Bryne album well, which is pretty laughable. He caught Bryne live a bit before his review which I think had more to do with his rating than the album's quality itself. this album wasn't great either... I mean a fuckin 9? lol.
exactly. this could be good by Jack White's standards, but that isn't saying much. This album was OK at best. Will be largely forgotten by summer.

So i have this theory: You know how a lot of porn addicts develop odd fetishes and move onto more hardcore stuff to satisfy their needs? I feel like Anthony has listened to so much music the only thing he can really enjoy is experimental music, even if it sounds like shit.
don't kink shame him
It's OK, I'm a sick fuck too. I have a melon fetish.
I wouldn't say that man. For example I went through a huge pop music phase. Now I love nothing but experimental. Before my pop music phase I was listening to lots of experimental folk n stuff like that.
Yeah I'm being hyperbolic, I just thought it was a funny analogy. Anthony loves a lot of simplistic shit too, (Lil Boat 2 and Lil Pump) he's into a wide variety of songs, he's way more open minded than I am when it comes to music that's for sure.
Think you might be onto something, this album is fucking terrible calling this trash experimental is an insult to real experimental albums, this is just plain lame trying to be experimental but failing

This review is spot-on. On first listen, the record sounded foreign. The songs are creative. They grow on you (still getting better and better). Now they follow me around the house (humming the melody accompanied by some air guitar). My favorite album this year.

My jaw dropped when I saw the gold flannel, holy shit. I thought it could be a 3 honestly
Eddie Truett is that because you expect artists to make the same record over and over again so you never have to accept change?
WTF lol...no it was more to the fact that he hated the original single and B-side and this album is getting extremely polarizing reviews like Pitchfork gave it a 4.7 and I honestly was expecting Fantano to follow suit. Why the fuck would you make that assumption based on my original comment?
Eddie Truett Yeah my bad man honestly I made that assumption because a lot of people are just trashing this album purely because they aren’t used to experimentation, and because you said “I thought it could be a 3” I assumed that’s the score that YOU thought it deserved.
NUT
Eddie Truett is the gold flannel supposed to mean something?
I can't believe the melon gave the music a 2/10 and the cover art a 9/10

Boarding House Reach, Jack White's Pinkerton moment where the critics hate it, but the album ends up being influential as hell
As a huge jack white fan im surprised by how much the melon liked this thing... I enjoy it more and more with every listen but idk if its a 9 yet. The pitchfork review was super obnoxious about how left field this album was and was basically the reveiwer being pretentious about how jack white is pretentious.. The guy gave it like a 4.8 or some shit?? It wasnt that bad
Yeah when I first listened it was a low 7 but now I have it as a decent 8. Don't know if I could give it a 9 though
Sam Highley im sitting at about the same spot.. At first i wasnt sure because it lacks a lot of songs you can "just listen to" but as an album it is super interesting and brings a lot to the table
First time I heard it I gave it a REEAAAALLLY light 8, but after a second listen I'd give it a decent 8, leaning a bit short on a strong 8. Hopefully, it might grow on me EVEN MORE on my subsequent listens.
It was a solid 7 at least imo, Idk why fantano is creaming over it so much but its definitely better than bitchforks review.
The emotional and aesthetic chaos is something that is something you either love or don't. Understanding his vocal performance on Connected by Love is really part of it

Anthony seems like a cool guy.
I absolutely love how divisive this album has been. Thats how music should be. The artist should express his conviction even to the disdain of others. Im feeling an 8.5 on this one. I really love it.
I feel like this is Jack's strongest album since the end of the White Stripes
Didn’t think a 9/10 was coming after his track review of “Connected by Love.”
What is Pitchfork smoking
Exactly. They have no CLUE what they're talking about anymore.
Daniel Pezzi what did they give it?
Alternative Fact Thanks.
Mr. Revan are you sure about that? their bnms this year are: Mount Eerie (white male, indie rock), Soccer Mommy (white female, indie rock), Nicolas Jaar (white male, electronic), SOBxRBE (group rap), US Girls (white female, pop), Car Seat Headrest (white male, rock), and CupcakKe (black female, rap).
IMO the only 2 that fall under 'SJW hype' are cupcakke and maybe the US Girls album but it was legitmately good. thought Soccer Mommy's album was meh but the rest of them are decent picks

When this came out, i wasnt able to appreciate the potencial of the album. Now, with a lot of listenings later, genuinely like it a lot.
A NINE?! Mushthony Shroomtano back at it again
According to Wikipedia: "Misophonia, literally "hatred of sound", was proposed in 2000 as a condition in which negative emotions, thoughts, and physical reactions are triggered by specific sounds." So yea, people who suffer from it have a bad time. That's the point of the track.

"hypermisophoniac" is actually inspired by a medical condition called misophonia, where certain sounds are extremely upsetting for the person who suffers, sending them running for hills or even driving them to tears. So Jack decided to use sounds, instruments and gadgets that made extremely annoying sounds in hopes of creating something beautiful. However, he did say in a recent interview it still came out annoying probably :)

It’s cool how Jack made his hair the clouds
Best part of the album, the Bass solo on Hypermisopheniac
Gets better with each listen I think is the key to this album. First time through it sounds random and chaotic, then after repeated visits, the order and genius amidst the cacophony hits you. I would say a soft 9, but still the best thing Jacks done in years.
Damn its a good year for music
Frank Zappa wouldn't be any more impressed by a new album! I can hear some of his influences in some of Boarding House Reach.
2 Things to get used to for the future in the comments:
1. People getting angry at Anthony for having a different experience listening to the album, and for having different taste.
2. People that said they hated the album at first talking about how much they love it now (keep in mind that it's OK for reviewers to change you're opinion on the album, as long as you actually go back to the album and GENUINELY ENJOY it more.)
Harry Dykhoff people have been doing this like since Andrew started reviewing
If I remember correctly Jack tried to put a song together out of sounds that are hard to listen to in hypermisophoniac. Misophonia is the hatred of certain sounds so if you think about its pretty fucking genius.
I think this album is super interesting. I’m seeing him in August and I’m looking forward to see how he performs these tracks live.
Saw him live 2 days ago and it was incredible! His drummer blew my mind.
I just realise he uses a green screen and does not actually put the picture up :(

He missed the opportunity to say over and over and over
I kind of love what Jack white did with this album. He's deliberately breaking rules, and I think he's trying to open some doors to let weird shit back into the mainstream. Last time that truly happened was the early 90s and it transformed music for so much the better. We need to do that again, and I suspect thats exactly what Jacks wants too. He's making the most weirdest fucking wildness he can to say "Hey, stop making the same music everyone , try shit nobody else as done"
Put on closed captions to watch google turn "era Beck" into Arabic over and over and over
It's funny how Jack White and Julian Casablancas are releasing two of my albums of the year in 2018, both being crazy experimental, who would have thought? Less surprising with Julian because I loved Tyranny and he's been on this kick for a while. They both came out so retro inspired and now their new music is so much more out there and experimental. As a massive fan of both artists early 2000's output, I'm all for it. I wonder if they've heard each others new music and what they think of it, and if Jack was inspired by Julian at all.
This album sounds like if fred armisen was to make a band for a portlandia sketch. These are the songs he would make

God i hope he keeps up this direction, it's like he just kicked his rock right back into being cutting edge and experimental and exciting.
