  • All creatives share similar struggles; in this video I discuss the challenges I've faced as an architect and the strategies I use to overcome them. Viewed through the lens of a project currently in design, this is a short musing on the importance of making things, on scheduling creativity and why cultivating uncertainty is so vitally important to your success (and happiness).
Anyone who relies on creativity to support themselves has fears: about the blank page, of being able to summon fresh ideas…of doing something interesting…something unexpected. I worry about the critics…whether that’s other professionals, my client’s, my parents…you - my audience. Of course I’m challenged by all the practical things too…of supporting my family, the worry of finding new projects, of meeting expectations, and of living up to my own artistic goals.
I have a very simple strategy for handling these struggles. If you want to learn more about my process for making, check this page on my website for my precise formula: thirtybyforty.c...
Thanks for watching, I do hope you enjoyed this short interlude; it was a real creative reflection for me; I had fun making it. Please share it with someone who needs to hear the message.

"I think it's interesting that creative people spend so much time imagining and inventing solutions to other people's problems, to the world's problems, but we forget to apply that same kind of thinking to our own." aside from all what you said in the video, which btw was greatly inspiring, these few words spoke to me personally, not only as a student but as an artist as well.
It's also quite interesting to know that other people share similar thoughts, people of different experiences in the field and out of it. Thank you so much for another motivational video, I appreciate your hard work.

30X40 Design Workshop these words just brought me to tears because that’s exactly what I’m facing right now. I’m in the middle of my bachelor thesis and I’m so focused on my work and on the solution of the project that I’m forgetting to care about myself. Handling stress in a way of getting back to yourself, to nature, to your surroundings is so important yet so hard to achieve.

Another wonderful and inspiring video. Thank you Eric.
I started watching your channel about a year ago or so and I have found your videos invaluable and shared them with as many people as I can.
I’m probably around the same age as you Eric but started my career very recently after having moved countries and raised my children to a fairly independent age. I am very hungry for knowledge and insight into the processes that go into the running of a successful architecture practice and the wonderful materials and construction elements that are so crucial to creating successful projects. And you have provided exactly that. I cannot wait to see every video and eagerly watch out for them. It’s also amazing to watch the transformation that you have made. Your videos have become increasingly more appealing and beautiful. I cannot wait to see more about running your practice, how you put your drawings together. Maybe more about organizing your practice, documents, file structures, preparing for client meetings.
Thank you for providing a most wonderful and inspiring service to us all!!

Very personal and inspirational video Eric. I think what you speak of is called 'the wisdom of uncertainty', and if fully embraced, the phenomenon can invoke a state of being where the more uncertain things seem, the more comfortable we become. It seems you have found it. Well done

I am an architecture student and uncertainity used to be my greatest enemy until I started to realise that it is a natural part of designing process, and such realization is gradually helping me to be more calm in my designing process, more patient with myself, and more persistent. Hello Eric. I'm an architect myself and I've been following your channel for quite some time now. Love your work and especially your presentations! You have inspired and pulled me through some really troubled times. This video (reflection) especially hit something quite deep. Seems architects (and creative professionals, as you said) tend to have all these things going on in the back of their minds. Really helps to know we aren't alone in this...

Eric, I always look forward to your Vlog Posts. They inspire me every week to push myself harder, further, to challenge myself and my core principles in Architecture, what I stand for and how I can craft the practice I truly want. I to suffer from the same issues that you go though and its People like you that lead and show others the way be it other Architects, Students or just people that want to understand what we actually do and show them we are all human. You don't know this but you are one of my Virtual mentors along with Pat F, Enoch S, Mark Le Page who I reflect on daily at times of doubt and contemplation after my quiet time. I'll listen to a pod cast or watch a vlog each day and i get a third wind to face my fear and pivot onto the next thing to strive for the unobtainable. Thank you as always, Barry Stott-Brookes. PS. take some soar throat sweets to help get over that London cold you have, you were here just at the wrong time its not as cold but just wet. PPS also what is the light you used for your model sunpath in the back ground i like it.

Thank you very much for this video, it’s uplifting. I‘m one year away from my masters degree in architecture, but I feel currently very empty and tired. It‘s always like you have to work the way your professor wants to day in and day out and your whole world is turning around specific problems that comes with this.
I really think that I have to set my mind free, but sometimes, and that might sound crazy, it feels that there‘s no place to be creative because I really have the fear that my personal touch isn‘t good enough.

Uncertainty => Courage => Starting => Doing the Work => Sisu (determination) => Making => Making Better + ^^^ Building ^^^ => Collaboration with Trades => Post Occupancy Study => Lessons Learned => Completing the Circle o. Like the searching tone, the desperation in the word of the uncertainty in the piece. With all the emphasis on BIM and modeling on the computer for production and workflow. It is grounding to touch flimsy and build models. Flimsy is the brainstorm of ideas raining, looking for flashes of lighting. Once the model is made the fluidity of an ideas gain substance. Thanks for the encouragement to make. Pax et Bonum

Heavy reflection my man. The things that consume us and haunt us as creative professionals. So true. Part of the reason I just spent half of today in my shop. Building. Creating. Feeling what it's like to take the design "the rest of the way". I love the studio you created and it makes me just ever so slightly jealous every time I see it in your videos. Such a beautiful insight into the creative process and the daily discipline of making, Eric. I've always loved this quote of Ira Glass's ... "Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” I always try to remember it's fear that's telling me not to create. And the antidote to fear is action. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and in such a gorgeous, visual way. I watched a couple of times so I could admire the layout and detailing of the panelling on the outside of your studio ;)

such an apt point of reference Amelia...have you seen HBO series The Defiant Ones? So many great quotes in there, but this one stood out by Jimmy Iovine: "I turn fear into a tailwind, instead of a headwind." I absolutely love that...

Que buena película! Made me feel very related to the idea of appreciating a design process making and unmaking itself as a designer pushes it. I too have felt it and over time learned to embrace uncertainty (sorry if my comment is not proper english, I am a Spanish speaker). Great movie and channel! I read a similar thought from Eduardo Arroyo's 'Create!'

Hi Eric, just to say I love your channel, every video leave me motivated to go ahead and improve my skills in design and make real architecture. To pursue my dream of having a studio workshop and develop ideas related to design in its various expressions.
Maybe you can make the subtitles on your videos to all who are not fluent in English as me because sometimes I can't follow all what you say if there isn't subtitles (not the ones made by UA-cam).
Thank you so much to share with us your life, your workshop, your ideas, your creative process and knowledge, these show us the kind of human being you are 💙 Greetings from Peru 🙌

I really love your videos. As a college student I am trying to choose a career in which I can practice what I enjoy, which is drawing. However, because of the ridicule society has on artists and the lack of financial insurance with that career, I never had the confidence in my own work to sell it or let others invest in it because the product of my thoughts has never felt worthy of material value. I am currently looking towards architecture as a technological approach on art which would still allow me to express my creativity. It is also something I realized I've had some interest in since I was little creating scaled floor plans of my bedroom and using them to decorate it they way I would if I had the resources. I know I am good at drawing and mathematical processes so it seems like a nice fit on paper. Finding your channel has not only helped me while looking into the field of architecture, but this video in particular has shown me that there is uncertainty in all sorts of fields of work and it calms me to see that you have found motivation and positivity in the feeling on uncertainty. I'll continue creating and boost my confidence in the process.

One of the struggles I have as being an artist/soon to be architect student. Is that I get scared to start making my ideas come to life. I'm such a perfectionist, I like being able to make something to my standards the first time I do it. I don't like failing at something even though I have many times before.
